Rhythm Roulette: El-P

- This time around on "Rhythm Roulette," Mass Appeal linked up with the one and only, El-P. The Def Jux general blessed us with the opportunity to gain some insight on the process, which has helped him make classic material since 1993. After heading to a hole-in-the-wall record shop and picking out some dusty old warped records, El showed us how to make something out of nothing/s, starting with his rusty, self-fixed, ASR-10.

El-P's beats always feel like they're on the verge of falling apart. Like a barely working machine about to blow a fuse and tear itself to pieces. I fucking love it.
🤣🤣🤣
Just like his sampler
Sick anaLITics.
Spot on!!
especially with his early stuff, he's never stopped experimenting but nowadays the chaos seems more controlled, more crisp, professional and less lo-fi.
"Fuck you, here's a beat" after messing around with broken equipment, warped records and questionable record grabs and the beat is insane, awesome and like nothing I have ever heard.
"questionable record grabs" 😂
So true, this
El-P is so talented. You can hear his signature sound even in this little quick beat he made.
he made the cold vein, so of course he can touch just about anything.
right !!!!!! thats so bad ass
Clinton Leonard 5:41 this is the signature, futuristic and dystopian beat. wished he wouldn't have put it in the back on the final beat.
The key is synthesizers
Clinton Leonard Definitely. This is the most impressive Rhythm Roulette I have seen. Most of the time, you can listen to the resulting beat at the end and you can pick out all of the samples. Sometimes a sample from one of the records is a major piece of the composition of the beat. But in El-P's, you really have to listen to where the samples are and it is distinctly El-P production that could fit on any album he has produced.
El-P is lowkey the best weird beatmaker in hip-hop, which, as all producers know, is a compliment
The weird attribute is most unique in quality. You can't teach that characteristic in the music industry. Not enough weird out there these days. Hats off to one of the greatest in the game! El-P is one rare, original dude. Much props.
Random Songs From Vinyl I would argue that J Dilla is slightly weirder with making beats from random sounds
Ain't no low-key about it. Well known, documented, and in the history books. NYC grimy industrial beat King
@@Ape_In_His_Apex dr. Octagon cool keith and his other 78 aliases the weirdest weirdest beatmaster
him or rza tbh
Imagine Bethoven doing a rhythm roulette. "Let's see what bullshit we can pull out of El-p's ass, you know it's overrated."
That would be fuckin awesome. lol
Bethoven was a complete rebel for his time you know.
only thing is Bethoven wouldn't be able to hear El-P's music haha.
I think the same, El-P made a conceptionless mixture of sounds from beautiful tracks...too much self-confidence!
Johan el p ain't overrated tho
Every time a new Rhythm Roulette episode comes out I end up rewatching half the series
PurplePandaClock me too
PurplePandaClock
stuck in the wormhole
me toooo
Can relate on a spiritual level
Thing I always loved about El-P's tracks, no matter how far out and spacey they get, they always maintain that dusty, funky boom bap b-boy vibe.
Agreed
Couldn't agree more.................El-Producto a true beat veteran making those robotic, radioactive, HARD ROCK, cosmic boom bap spacey beats for the cranium dome piece🤖🪐🎶🎧
Exactly
Decrepid spaced out b-boy angel dusted John Carpenter sound track? Sign me up.
I wish this video was an hour long and showed the entire process. Shit, I'd sit and watch El-P make beats for hours.
C Bell deadass
@@kisuryouri334 that was 4 years ago and you still replied lmao
I would love to see the making of Funcrusher Plus and the Run the Jewels albums.
No doubt!!!
They should post longer, less edited videos for the people actually interested in the process. These are cool, but they are clearly for the general public who doesn't have much production knowledge.
You're right, we actually gave him Leon Haywood on purpose, thereby defeating the whole concept of this franchise.
poo
Hopefully we get more Rhythym Roulette
his production technique is so fucken obscure, no one works they way he does, truly unique arist
Producer gave me a beat, said it's the beat of the year
I said "El-P didn't do it so get the fuck outta here!"
Hahaaaaaa!
Run the Jewels all day.
Fuck with your rapping who produced you
Becket Clark
I slap the snot, take what you got and Run the Jewels you
you had to go there hahah
I've seen on some rhythm roulettes where they DON'T blindfold people and instead have them pick 3 records out their own house. This episode is a real one
+Cory Donaldson Those are homemade ones then, the official ones always make them choose randomly.
Wasn't Mass Appeal then
R.I.P. Jay Dee.
Rip MF DOOM
Don't underestimate the god tier level sampling magic that comes out of Beethoven
AWA THE BROWN dude probably secretly loves beethoven.
AWA THE BROWN I'm sure he's just fucking around lol he said "overrated, I mean it's been done before" 😂
That was sarcasm
's ass. Beethoven's ass
It's unoriginal af and been done a million times smd
"Beethoven... ITS BEEN DONE!" that was hilarious! El-P seems like the kind of dude you would smoke weed with and end up laughin your ass off
Clearly the cat ghost produced this and was exhausted from his work
The birth of Meow The Jewels.
MJ Laws mr len
I can't get over how vigorously he shakes his head around.
el-p has one of the most distinct sounds in hip hop!!!
El-P straight came for Beethoven's neck... Fucking hilarious! XD
Holy Shit!! It's You...Again. xD
u are everywhere
FZK LakiOG You bet your ass I'm everywhere. I could be in your house right now... watching you sleep...
Tha Swami oh shit
FZK LakiOG You damn right I'm watching you take a shit right now...
I just picture Killer Mike rapping over this
OuterSpace90 nigga, everybody better. This shit is tough.
I picture El-P and Bigg Jus rhyming over this...
Τhat's a real alchemist, kids.
He turns shit into gold.
What about alchemist the producer lol
I got that reference! His Co Flow days and sampling that....
He's a real el producto
well..alchemist is the real alchemist..but i get what you are sayin! ;)
M8 you callin Beethoven shit
This guy is a genius....I smiled when i heard Stepfather Factory playing in the background in the beginning of this vid.
Moral to the story: El-P not capable of making a wack beat
well said will , he couldnt make a wack track if he tried
yea aight
@Technews sad
@Technews I'm going to care enough to let you know that no one gives a single solitary fuck what you like.
K bye.
@Technews You're missing the whole point here buddy, El-p isn't a sonically perfect clean cut producer. He shit is noisy and all jumbled and fucked and raw. It's a massive clusterfuck of aggressive massive sounds that once put together make a beautiful but rough soundscape. He is his beats. His studio, his life, the way he looks ect. You can't mistake an El-P beat, you just know its him. There's a reason he's considered one of hip hops super producer. He made his own path, created his own style. That's not to take away from the producers you mentioned but El-P didn't follow the trends and the standard hip hop sound that all these dudes created. he brought something new to the table.
I love how this is suggested to me at least once a week. Yes I love beats. Yes I love El-Ps beats. Yes RUclips, I've seen this video several times. You can stop now.
This dude is super unique in the way he does things, I don't even know what some of the stuff in his studio even is!
El-P has a cat in his studio. Guess Meow The Jewels got to him.
Fun fact: he had that cat for like 15 years. You can see the same cat in his apartment in the Bazooka Tooth documentary filmed in 2002
The fact that this man still rocks with a digital Casio watch further proves that he walked straight outta the 90’s. Legend
"The perfect combination of psychedelic colors and an ass...which is pretty much exactly what I look for in life." :D
Amazing quote
Right?! Haha

i know this might not be the right place to send you this, but have you ever thought about putting all the final results from your rhythm roulette series on a compilation? i'd be happy to buy it and support you. especially the apollo brown feature!
FelixN nah cause most of the beats are ass
ALLCAPSARCHER09 The apollo brown one was undeniable fire, but yes, sometimes the picks don't suit the style of the producer.
Alex Rosenbaum haven't watched it, but you can't force creativity to happen, which is what they're trying to with these videos.
Alex Leer if youre avant garde it doesnt mattet
Still come back to watch this 4 years later. So underrated and relatively unknown in today's European mainstream. El-P should be up there on anybody's Top 10 list of Hip-Hop History.
love this guys style of beat making... he takes such strange parts of records and makes them fit
Actually sounded pretty fucking good
lmao fuckin hell, first a broken needle, then his broken piece of shit sampler... I can only imagine how many people would feel discouraged after noticing they have a broken needle.
doesn't stop el-p tho
The guy made Fantastic Damage. Hard to believe it has almost been 20 years.
20 yrs since Can Ox Cold Vein. Def Jux first official full length. Still holds up to this day. If you haven’t heard El p on Open mike eagle podcast series What Had happened Was. You’re missing out. He goes in depth in every part of his career. Season 1 is Prince Paul’s story. 12 episodes an hour a piece. You won’t be able to stop listening if you haven’t already. El has been my fav producer since cold vein came out in 01. Hearing the process of the album is such a treat
El-P is the no1 modern hip hop producer in my book. He's like a one man early ninties bomb squad!Organized noize at its finest!!
I agree. His beats are straight nasty. RTJ3 is so godly
Spot on
i fucking lost it at "this shit is warped as fuck"
El-P is a fucking genius and I wish he wasn't so underrated. He's hands down one of the best producer/mc's of all time.
+vmm12 I simply care because I wish more people would recognize his genius. Just my opinion.
this is a glowing example of the right person with the right tools and materials
Dude ...
Damn you El-P and your glorious cigarette smoke! Seriously though, I cannot understate the production prowess of El-P, runthejewels may have just saved my life (no exaggeration). Thank you brother. P.S. I quit smoking cigs about a year ago and there were weeks, months even of excruciating torture. I cannot overstate this, if you don't smoke cigs, DO NOT START, if you already smoke cigs, enjoy every puff, every cigarette, every bit of relaxation and clarity you feel... but realize the truth, embrace the truth, you are engaging in active suicide. If you dont want to quit, don't. If you do want to quit, do every mother fucking thing in your power, it will not be easy, at all, but you can do it. One thing to keep in mind, you are going to feel a hell of a lot WORSE for awhile (physically, emotionally, psychologically, even spiritually - I was truly shocked) that what happens when poison is leaving the body. I used to smoke a pack and a half of Newport 100's a day, sometimes more...and while I no longer have that instant relief (smoking cigs is in a way a type of meditation) I'm starting to grow and feel different than I ever could while smoking cigarettes, more in control, more powerful even. Wherever you are, whoever you are: Much Respect - All Love - Vibes
I was never into smoking cigs but this was an interesting read lol congrats on quitting
Leakbros Thanks for the love and support homie, I really appreciate that.
*****
damn..
+1
I been smoke free for two years and I smoked a pack and a half a day(newports of course). Seeing El-P light up had me thinking on the same lines as you.
Every time I watch this vid I think "oh he makes it look so easy" and I get on my equipment and try to make a hip hop beat from random samples. And, invariably, every time it sounds 99999 times worse than his end result. But I'll keep trying dammit. That and I should probably start smoking weed again.
+Simon Carlile dude Rome wasn't built in a day! keep grinding!
+Chase MB pharcyde we outchea
Don't need weed to make good beats jus learn your tools and your sound
+Logan Schway nah you dont but it fucking helps
weed makes me hear shit and think of melodies I wouldn't have before, I make weird hippie shit when I smoke. It's more fun to make beats when you're smoking, everything feel like it flows naturally and you aren't working to make a beat.
1:54 "It's the perfect combination of psychedelic colors and an ass.... which is pretty much exactly what I look for in life anyway.." Haha I'll second that.
" The needle on my turn table broke today, so whatever I make, should sound really shitty" El P always cracks me up
Good lord, this is what it sounds like when he just pulls a beat out his ass? With samples he hates no less. Fucking outrageous.
I'd love to see RZA on this.
Ian Cropley that's a cool picture you got there
Nick Purcell OK
wuz i talkin 2 uu?? :(((((
Nick Purcell computer
haha dang you got me
or i got me

I forgot RZA
forgot DJ Muggs
V.A Alchemist
Jimi Hendrixx Yeahh The Alchemist! How did I forget him
***** DJ Muggs . He produced a lot for Cypress Hill right ?
I wish I was half as talented as this man with making beats
me too man, me too
Practice.. Dedication.. Commitment.. You can do anything.
Dan Torrico Except make an album like Cold Vein
The great think is that El P found his own voice, even at the beginning of his career he used a lot of electronics, and had a clear vision. A lot of producers (and musicians with traditional instruments) just try to sound like their idols without bringing anything new on the table. Btw my favourite producer is Edan, his "the beauty and the beat" album sounds crazy. El p, doom, edan, madlib are great talents
EL-P takes the roulette's prize money period
So all the best white producers both SMOKE and OWN CATS.
like who?
Trent Reznor has cats?
scott storch, j.r rotem, the alchemist? :/
***** Marco Polo
***** aaron funk (venetian snares), aesop rock, among others...
Here after RTJ4, been sleeping on this guy too long ...
Vapourizes weed but smokes cigarettes lmao
+Rudi van Wyk cigarettes helps you mellow out
***** oh nah I got nothing against smoking cigs, I used to smoke cigs and do occasionally, but it makes no sense to vape weed if you can burn it. Hes ok with cig smoke but not weed smoke? lol i find vaping to be really wasteful
Rudi van Wyk Word bro, maybe its more convenient but who knows lol.
+Rudi van Wyk easier way to smoke oil
melvin.mcmangler Ahhh yeah true i didn't think of that, lucky bastard I live in Australia so I've never had bho or hash oil
Fantastic Damage is one of the Greatest Hip Hop LP's Of All Time
MANKUB123 Just one of the greatest records of all time
Super facts
El just being hip hop's grumpy grandpa is hilarious
Is it just me or is this man WILDLY underappreciated?
Everything about el-p is so brooklyn
*Gentrified Brooklyn
@@ChrisDodges123 Dude's from Brooklyn ya dingus
Chris Dodges mans was born in 1975 Brooklyn not 2020 hipster Brooklyn my guy
Chris Dodges white people lived in Brooklyn before Giuliani dude
@@ChrisDodges123 whoops
"Just basically a process of experimentation, editing, and weed".
El-P seems like such a cool person, excellent producer.
"It's been done" fuckin lost it.
This Producer is on another planet :D ! Awesome planet
"It's just a process of experimentation, editing, and uh, weed" LOL
Fuck yeah, El-P. Way to love your craft and be real about it :)
I Probably Watch This Video Every Month.
Yep.
lol. I like havoc from mobb deep's the best. I probably watch that one 3 times a month.
John Alefosio - First time catching this series. Going to track that one down now, thanks! 👍😉
Oh Shit What Up?
Stepfather Factory, what an incredible production. El-P has always been on another level!!!
that stepfather factory beat
***** My fav is Constellation Funk all day but that ones dope too plus everything on Cold Vein
Raspberry Fields and Iron Galaxy tho
thank u bro, i was searchin for a half an our or som befor i saw ur comment :D
Dude this is insane, the creative flow is crazy.
Even with broken equipment he still made a dope beat than most cats in the game.I LOVE El-P,and no one can tell me different!
That undulating, ghostly vocal sample in the background is godly
And, that is why El-P is the greatest of all time.
The cat snoozin’ during that beat forge is the chillest creature on Earth.
hes a genius. he was ahead of his time when he was in company flow, and in 2014 he is still way tooo advanced. wish he produced me some beats lol
The way EL-P makes records is the same way I write poetry and novels. Artistic transmutation of music. You first isolate a sound in your head then imagine it in a new context where it can work.
It’s interesting to see what El-P’s ear picks out for a sample
30 seconds and I fell in love with this show
Where is te full beat, Mas Appeal needs to post these beats on soundcloud. Ridiculoid
I come back to this vid every now and then because of how sick el-p is
I don’t even need to hear anything that fact he is drinking a Modelo I already know this dude is ligit and has a permanent invite to the carne asada lol 👍💯
EL-P could make a beat outta thin air. Like seriously, he could make a beat out of AIR. Pure genius at making beats and THE most underrated Producer in Hip-Hop today.
"He told me its the beat of the year, I said El- P didn't do - so get the F*ck atta here"
El-P, when you apologized before you played it. You almost tricked me into thinking it might actually suck. Fire!
I'd love to see Edan on this type of program.
Now I understand how El P goes sublime....his gear.
May not be a typical producer to get but Robbie Chater of the Avalanches would make for an absolutely incredible segment.
This has got to be my favorite Rhythm Roulette. All future producers should take example from El-P. In classic makeshift hip-hop fashion. His turntable broke earlier that day, and then sampler broken, thus couldn't utilize MIDI, and still, listen to the outcome, complete successful turnout and a beat that emanates the classic, true sound of el-producto.
He is my favorite producer ever, since Company Flow i've always loved that abstract, obscure, experimental kind of electronic apocaliptic sound, the best!!
BRING BACK RHYTHM ROULETTE
"this is exactly the type of record you... avoid while at the record store" lmao
el-p is one of a kind. I wish we had more, but I'm glad we have one.
Get madlib on this
That was so sick, I’ve always loved Aesop and picked up his influence before I realized your affiliation. Your production style is prob my favorite I’ve heard after really diving through all of rtj
Get madlib on this shit.
Lol knowing madlib dude would probably have every record in the shop
hed be a bit confused without any blackspoitation/slapstick comedy dialogue to put on top tho
saucy05 Motherfucker is one word.
saucy05 his comment was mostly right.
+saucy05 good choice, waiting for Alchemist too.
As far as EL-P is concerned, any record will be his beat.
His voice seems much deeper when he's not rapping.
Wow EL P could make a beat out of anything.
Get an episode with Thes One (People Under The Stairs)! Please.
2 years later they did. THANK YOU MASS APPEAL!
My dream is to see El and Danny Brown release an epic project together. Killer Mike and El work perfectly together and Danny would be the same way I think.
Joel Therrien he's on Run the jewels 3
EL-P may be an acquired taste for some.....but in my opinion.....he's one of the most creative hip hop producers to do it. The guy is no slouch with the rhymes either!
This is how music is supposed to be made! That beat he just made is FIRE!!!
i would have enjoyed even more watching this if had to sample everything from those records(incl. drums)
This is the best rhythm roulette I've seen so far
One of the greatest musicians of all time
Dang el-p we get it you're a blood
Sam Richardson hahahhaha
Shits corny asf...
This was El-P 7 years ago. Imagine him now.
