Yo. Hit some immortal technique up. Start with "dominant species"...wait to listen to "dance with the devil"...until you are ready. Its heartbreaking...and heartening. Theres a gap. Its a song and a mini song. Listen to the end.
Rage and RTJ should form a supergroup called Run the Machine. Tom and El P would do some wild riffs together, and Zack's voice works so well with Mike and El already.
Like Anthrax and Public Enemy? Public Anthrax wasn't welcome and, IMO, the first to not back down in cancel culture. Loved the "Basket full of puppies" tour, then the "we're not changing our name" tour. Run The Machine is exactly what Rage Against is now for, dude.
I swear these two are some of the best artists of this generation. They need to be on all the lists of greats. Next to Ozzy, Zappa, Run Dmc, and anybody else that has made great and passionate music.
Huge Metalhead head here, and lifelong hardcore Deftones fan, hearing Mike name drop them made sense to me. Hearing Jamie name drop Trent Reznor makes a tone of sense too.
Yeah, on Flientology. Plus Trent produced Saul William's debut album, who then featured as a background vocalist on NIN's survivalism. So it's safe to say that Reznor likes good rap music.
I love when people acknowledge Ice-T and recognize his contributions to not only rap, but metal too. That time he did that track with Six Feet Under was probably one of my favorite rap/metal crossovers. Need to hear you guys do something like that. RTJ with literally anyone in metal would be dope. Ye I'm a couple years too late on this video, but I give no fucks.
Didn’t know that happened! Thanks for the tip! Six feet under is some crazy heavy shit to collaborate with lol. Ironically they were at the first “scene” type of show I went to see, along with 25 to Life and maybe E Town Concrete (might have two shows mixed up) but I’m thankful to this day I got be here in the central NJ area and a teen in mid 90’s with so much awesome music and fans everywhere. I always wonder what a 15 year old dude is expected to listen to to cope with that rage that comes out of nowhere in ur teens? Anyway I was actually listening to Cannibal Corpse this morning after reading about Chris Barnes being in both CC and 6fu
I remember when Body Count first came out. I went to see them at a little club and the first half of the show was Ice doing his rap hits, of which I was familiar with some, then closed out with Body Count. It was seriously one of the most inclusive and positive atmospheres I've ever experienced at a show and he absolutely encouraged it. A true O.G. of moving the cultural dialogue forward.
I know it's not a full on crossover but hearing zack de la Rocha from rage on the 2 rtj songs hes on makes me so happy. That's close enough of a rtj metal collab for me
I love that Run The Jewels have a place on NPR stage alongside a pop star like Adele or in the pages of a metal magazine beside the frontman of Rage Against the Machine. Good music knows no boundaries.
Yes, this is the connection that was needed. I could say a lot about Killer Mike (Super Dope) but for those that don’t know EL-P has to be one of the most underrated names in Hip Hop maybe of all time, don’t take my word check his credentials!!!!!!!! Much Love

Saw the Melvins a couple years ago. I was so shellshocked after the show that I couldn't drive. Barely drank, but my brain was rattled for an hour. It was _heavy_ .
After hearing all their influences, it's easy to see why I like them so muc, we have a lot of similar likes and inspirations. RatM, Suicide, Gang of Four, The Road Warriors, The Mars Volta. These guys are so good
Body Count was that shit!!! I'm not a Hiphop head, I'm a metalhead all day. Mad respect to Killer Mike and all those who respect the music, culture and the people. Music is love, no matter how hard it is. And this is mad love.
Listening to Mike and El-P talk about metal 😍😍😍😍 Them teaming up with Zach de la Rocha is actually how I first heard of Run the Jewels. I heard that first song and directly went and binge listened to Run the Jewels 2. I’ve been obsessed ever since!
This was me in the 1990s growing up on RATM, Deftones , tool, NIN, korn, cypress hill, dre, System of a Down etc etc - one of the best lollas I saw was korn, System of a Down, tool and snoop dog - then the 2007/ rock the Bells LA and SF shows were straight up legit. Public Enemy, cypress hill and so many more ....I flew from Singapore and spent 2 weeks in California.
things metal dudes and rap fans had in common 40's, bongs, blunts, kung fu/horror/action/scifi movies, batman, wolverine, Thor, Larry Bird, Doctor J, Mike Tyson, black leather jackets, street fighter II turbo, tekken, BMX bikes, hi top sneakers, long shorts, horizontal striped shirts, camouflage, hating cops and sellouts, hanging out with that guy who had a weight bench in his crib, dreadlocks, loud speakers, stereo equipment, riding in an Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme
Azazel Acheron Those bands aren’t radio friendly. They were just liked by so many people that radio stations played their music (heavily censored of course).
'Chasin' down that hard moment'. I listen to ALL kinds of music and there are these 'hard moments' all over the place. Rap, dub and metal give more than most. Just discovered these guys and they've renewed my faith in rap. Their music has found it's time.
For some reason watching El-P being reverential when talking about the Melvins gave me goosebumps. I love the Melvins and i know for a lot of people they are an acquired taste.
Without knowing that El-P liked metal, I always thought his production was the type of production a metalhead would do if they were working in hop hop.
See the Melvins live when you can. It's always an experience; the way they build a set, the way it flows, if you're a music fan you have to witness it.
Deftones, one of my favorite bands ever. I'd say second favorite after Tool. Nothing in any genre I've listened to has gotten close to what that music has offered me. It's past music. Literally is. Too long to explain but the Tool fans know what I mean. They created something bigger than a band.
As someone who gained an initial appreciation for music by way of 70s rock and 80s metal, I can say that I have always heavily appreciated rap lyrics and beats.
Hearing El-P shoutout my favourite band of all time, The Clash, is so powerful man. Love that the influence of those guys is still being felt decades on. And given how much the Clash themselves fell in love with New York hip-hop in 1980, it must be cool to see it come full circle like that.
I've been a lover of metal and hip hop since 1987. Discovered it all at age 11 through some older lads and used to go watch the DJ battles at the local record store, face squished against the glass because I was too scared to go in. Also bear in mind that was in South Wales. Hip hop spread really quickly to the UK and there was a thriving b-boy culture in every little backwater town, even if it was just a few mates with a boom box and a copy of a copy. It was also thanks to this music that I learned of the American civil rights movement and had my eyes opened to the way humans can treat each other. Metal was the perfect counterpoint to that. I cut my teeth in Queen then guns n roses and iron maiden, quickly going to megadeth and Metallica then grunge in the early 90s. Then a decade of the most incredible music from both genres, particularly metal which just opened up sonically and went fucking mental. The two meeting was inevitable with the likes of Rage, the Judgment Night soundtrack, Bodycount and public enemy were sampling slayer in the late 80s on she watches channel zero, ahead of the curve as ever. Unfortunately both genres now suffer with weak mainstream acts but there's still as much good music in both as there ever was, you just have to look for it (which is now super easy, thanks interwebs)
Word. Never knew the tape trading era of metal (I'm too young for that). But the internet really made discovering new bands WAY easier than in the early 2000.
Its interesting because the great musicians always give kudos to other genres and influences outside of the intended genre. You can't put yourself in a box and you have to be open minded with it comes to creativity.
Man, when El P said "chasing that heavy moment, that riff" I can really relate to that as a metalhead. I wonder what he and Killer Mike would think if they heard something like Death -- Pull the Plug. Awesome riff in that song. Chuck was a beast.
Huge metal head, grew up on punk metal crust and rap. So nice to see groups crossing divides and taking on styles from each other. There is no Archspire without tech n9ne
I love both hip hop and metal, RTJ is one of my favorite groups out there atm, I got to see them twice last year. The appeal that caught me when I first heard them was the visceral tone. While still hip hop, it reminded me of metal because of how aggressive and in your face it was and I’d have to say RTJ2 is up there on my favorite albums of all time lists
Yeah man! Excellent! I remember having the Run DMC twelve inch one of the first crossover tunes to break big time! and being a true lover of Rap, Metal, Hardcore or whatever...it's good to find out about like minded dudes! Cheers!
Sometimes when I listen to music I just want it to be heavy: overwhelming yet exhilarating, a release of tension and a rush of new energy at once. These guys do it for me. RATM, Deftones, NIN for sure. Guess that doesn't make me a very tasteful or intellectual listener, but you can't deny power when you hear it and feel it. Digging For Windows goes so hard. When I got into RATM I discovered that song, but now I'm getting into RTJ and it makes sense that El produced the track.
Best is subjective. Bars are great and I only listen to lyricists, but I think about more when I say best group. El-P's production is dope and they bring an energy and total package that hasn't been matched since The Beastie Boys. They get you moving and have something to say.
DJ Z Trip made an awesome mashup with old school hip-hop and classic rock. The whole thing made perfect sense. Loved it. I've always been a Tool fan who bumped Naz. Don't deprive yourselves people.
The synergy and appreciation amongst all of my favorite bands gives me a sense of vindication for the choices I've made. I appreciate the shit out of this video...
I read a long time ago the el-p was obsessed with blade runner and authors like Philip K Dick, i think thats where that sharp, rigid, futuristic sound comes from. I've been a fan since like 97 when company flow opened up for the beastie boys at the electric factory in Philly where he basically got booed off the stage. It's amazing to see the evolution from then to now. How can you not love these 2, greatest hip hop duo ever
RTJ played before NIN at Aftershock, and I was at first a bit confused, like "What's a hip hop group doing at Aftershock?" I had heard of them, but not really listened to them, but once they took the stage, it made total sense. Now I am a big RTJ fan and I am so glad they are bringing hip hop back to what it used to be.
Coming on this video 2 years later, hearing them talking about "if someone's coming out to your music to beat some ass" and then remember Luke Cage came out to RTJ in the Defenders to beat some ass
I continually say there is a connection between hip hop and metal. There's something there. I just need a better way to articulate it. But there's a reason these guys like Waka Flaka are into bands like Lamb of God. It's a different kind of heavy, but it's still there. Are the lyrics for some of these new guys the best or kind of stupid? Yeah, but there's some stupid punk lyrics too. Things evolve. These new guys are punk and thrash will come soon. RTJ is just their own thing though. If you haven't heard El-P's Fantastic Damage, do yourself a favor and listen to it.
DefThrone I think the connection is being emotional, and putting it all out there. Everything pent up, everything keeping you down, you just blast it out. Just in a different way
I mean more from a historical point. Body Count, Rage, Rick Rubin, Anthrax and Public Enemy all straddle the line. As someone who enjoys both hip hop and metal, I'd like to see those two communities more united. But that doesn't mean we need another Limp Bizkit. God no. But something new and innovative that utilizes both.
There's been a crossover between hardcore metalheads and hardcore hip hop heads for a looooong fucking time. It's something you easily pick up on if you're heavily into either genre or talk to someone from the opposite camp and realize how much you relate to them. Love of metal is why I have a love for hip hop, and it's vice versa for allot of hip hop heads who find love in metal.
Grew up on both hip hop/rap and rock/metal. Huge fan of both and i kinda see the connection between them. It's not an obvious one but it's there. Maybe it's just my upbringing. But i know for sure, i'll always remeber the first time my dad showed me Van Halen- eruption and the first time my brother showed me Wu tang clan- CREAM.
Killer Mike's getting those grays in his beard! Run the Jewels had the most crowd surfing I have seen at any concert, including all of the metal shows I've been to. Crazy show, go see them live. Some well dressed hipster crowd surfed on stage and Killer Mike commented about how it was the first time he had seen someone crowdsurf in hard bottom shoes. Great bunch of guys. Killer Mike was reppin Bernie Sanders! Great video.
I’ve always said music is subjective..if you feel it ..your body will move involuntarily..my first love was metal ..and till this day I’m still listening to it , but hip hop and that deep baselines and nice drum patterns that makes it so unique and also well put together i mean music it’s truly an art
I am a big fan of these guys. I remember playing old ice t tapes and when body count first hit. They had to release that album without cop killer. So amazing to see them recognize artist and music I like.
Word! word, Word! On most of what you said in this video, but I finally had to comment when you gave Ice-T props that he deserves and doesn't get nearly enough.
I completely agree about El-P opening statement.. I also love all intense, heavy music. Even Bach, classical.. Heilung, Viking.. Brother Dege, Country.. Mudvayne, Cream.. Rage Against Machine.. Underground, REAL rap. Twiztid, Token, Gorilla Voltage, Tech N9ne!!!
They say, "secret metal heads" but the fans always knew. You can hear the influence in El-P's production.
Silentype Student Producer el-p listed punk & post punk and hardcore bands at first.
You ever listen to Fantastic Damage? The production on that album is so explosive it couldn't have came from anything but metal.
Silentype Student Producer agreed
El-P was influenced by the Bomb Squad, who were also heavy metal fans... hence their use of noise in their dissonant production.
Pretty sure Trent Reznor produced one of his solo discs
I barely know Killer Mike's music, but every time I see him in an interview or on his Netflix series, I can't help but love him.
Love what Killer Mike said about the music helps getting the rage out of you instead of taking it out on somebody. El-P & Killer Mike are legends,
RTJ songs are head banger material, straight up
Milan Absolutely. I wild out every time I put em on ☺
Fuck yeah blockbuster night 2, hard as hell
Saw em live and yeah that shit was intense
Gang of Four, Suicide, Melvins. I already loved El-P but now he’s on another level
being a metalhead who discovered hip-hop later (and felt in love), is very satisfind to see these artists that I admire having such similarity. it feels I'm doing good
Bruno Varoto hey check out Hacktivist, they are a UK grime/djent band. They basically rap over heavy metal. I think you will like it
Yo. Hit some immortal technique up. Start with "dominant species"...wait to listen to "dance with the devil"...until you are ready. Its heartbreaking...and heartening. Theres a gap. Its a song and a mini song. Listen to the end.
Im the opposite i was all hiphop rap then found a liking to rock metal later on
I was the opposite. I was originally a Hip-hop fan who later became a Metalhead. So I know what you mean 😊
Rage and RTJ should form a supergroup called Run the Machine. Tom and El P would do some wild riffs together, and Zack's voice works so well with Mike and El already.

That would be epic.
El-P shouting out The Melvins, so rad.
The Melvins are probably the most important band nobody knows.
Some good ass mentions in this. Deftones too.
Seriously. I love them both and now I know one of them loves the other. Super news.
Melvins are one of the best bands around these days. So cool El-P got totally into them and got all their albums immediately.

unun septium No they’re not.
Who is then? Please don't mumble Migos.
DJ Z Trip made an awesome mashup with old school hip-hop and classic rock. The whole thing made perfect sense. Loved it. I've always been a Tool fan who bumped Naz. Don't deprive yourselves people.
Love these dudes ! I think Killer Mike is my brother from another mother.
RTJ JUST KEEPS GETTING HEAVY AND BETTER EACH TIME CALLING OUT ICE T/BODY COUNT DAMMMMM!!! RESPECT
The fact that they got to work Omar and Cedric is awesome
DefThrone it's the constant use of the half step interval
DefThrone
I think the connection is being emotional, and putting it all out there.
Everything pent up, everything keeping you down, you just blast it out.
Just in a different way
A heavy focus on rhythmic qualities, double bass, lots of triplets for increased intensity... Those are a couple shared values.
Black Sabbath and most metal showed up as an expression of the darker sides of reality. A lot of rap music also takes this approach.
The only year I caught The Family Values tour the highlight for me was Chino coming back on stage to join Korn for Wicked.
Zack De La Rocha Respect to that brother !!!
I don't think I've ever related to anything more than this. Pretty much summarises my relationship with music.
So musically, I'm in the right place😁 thänx 4 Zack's song at the end, true legendary spit master👌
As a devout hip-hop head, I vouch for this. I fucks with metal HEAVY. To me hip-hop is an extension of metal and metal is an extension of hip-hop.
I’ve always said music is subjective..if you feel it ..your body will move involuntarily..my first love was metal ..and till this day I’m still listening to it , but hip hop and that deep baselines and nice drum patterns that makes it so unique and also well put together i mean music it’s truly an art
Gratifying to hear Killer Mike show Deftones some love.
love love love!
Same here , been listening old school hip Hop stuff lately.
The Day EL P puts on a Melvins sample on a RTJ song the World will be set straight. Word up!
Revolver, you earned your subscription with this new series! and to have RTJ in the debut episode? We're not worthy!
I am a big fan of these guys. I remember playing old ice t tapes and when body count first hit. They had to release that album without cop killer. So amazing to see them recognize artist and music I like.
Two of THE most amazing artist to ever live...Respect. 🙏🏽
This helps me understand my addictive obsession with these lads since RTJ1
So damn excited to see these guys when their tour rolls through
Another reason to love the shit out of these guys...Please come to Wisconsin- we fucking need you!!!
Respect to Killer Mike for that shout-out to Ice-T. RTJ you guys are killing it. 👉👊
Word! word, Word! On most of what you said in this video, but I finally had to comment when you gave Ice-T props that he deserves and doesn't get nearly enough.
such inspirational open minded human beings.
Love Mike and EL
I completely agree about El-P opening statement.. I also love all intense, heavy music. Even Bach, classical.. Heilung, Viking.. Brother Dege, Country.. Mudvayne, Cream.. Rage Against Machine.. Underground, REAL rap. Twiztid, Token, Gorilla Voltage, Tech N9ne!!!
