Formula 1 Drivers all time points (1950-2021) - adjusted

  • Disclaimer: this is not any official rating, it is created by me and explained below. Feel free to discuss and give ideas how to improve it for next iteration.
    Aim was to take in consideration fact that in the past seasons had less races and drivers careers tend to be shorter:
    1. Point system: current (without fastest lap) 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1
    2. All half point included (not full races, or drivers sharing cars during race - common in 1950s)
    3. Each race points adjusted to 15 races per season (if season has less than 15 races each race gives slightly more points, if more than 15 each race gives less)
    4. Each drivers result adjusted to 5 season (if driver races for more than 5 season he gets slightly less points if more that 5 season slightly more)
    5. Each world championship +250 points (10 standard wins)

    Hi All,
    Please read the description, there are all the details of the system I used.
    If you have any suggestions for improving it, feel free to put them in answer to that comment.
    Please discuss the results and consider subscribing for more similar videos.
    Thanks,

      However, it should also be taken into account that the races in the 1950s and 1960s were sometimes significantly longer, both in terms of time and distance. There were races up to 500 km. The standardization to 300-310 km only came in the 1970s or 1980s.

    •  2 года назад

      I would do the system a little differently:
      Once the difficulty of winning a race increases with the number of drivers. So the points for a race should be based on the number of participants. The more riders that participate, the more points the winner should get.
      Formula: points = number of racers + 1 - placement
      Example: 26 starters
      1st place = 27 points
      2nd place = 26 points
      3rd place = 25 points
      ..
      26th place = 1 point
      The three drivers on the podium also get bonus points to increase the weighting of these places.
      Winner = +10
      Second = +5
      Third = +2
      So in total:
      1st place = 37 points
      2nd place = 31 points
      3rd place = 27 points
      4th place = 24 points
      5th place = 23 points
      ..
      The points per race are then standardized according to the race distance, i.e. races of 400 or 500 km are weighted more heavily than races of 300 km in length.
      Since today we have a standard length of about 310 km, I would then calculate the points per race = points * race distance (in km) / 310 (km).
      e.g. at 500 km:
      1st place = 60 points
      2nd place = 50 points
      3rd place = 44 points
      4th place = 39 points
      5th place = 37 points
      ..
      26th place = 2 points
      The sum of the points from all races is then multiplied by 2 and divided by the number of actual races. So that shorter seasons are weighted slightly higher and longer seasons are weighted less.
      i.e. if a driver has collected 400 points in 16 races, he is given 50 points for the statistics
      if a driver has collected 300 points in 12 races, he is also rated with 50 points for the statistics
      Thus, all important factors (number of races per season, race distance and number of drivers per race) are taken into account and we have a standardized points system that makes all drivers from all eras comparable.
      Of course, since this artificial weighting system changes the outcome of each individual season and does not represent the correct order, I would then add points for the real final result of a season. You can use today's system for that.
      Historically real champion gets +25 bonus, runner-up +18, etc.

    Fangio didn't take part in his first Grand Prix until he was 38 (almost 39) years old and won his first title aged 40. He competed in 7 full seasons and finished first or second every time, in one of the seasons he was second he won every race he finished. He won his 5 titles between 4 different manufacturers, all of those facts are insane.

      With current rules his records would be impressive, but to be fair people in 1950 would probably say the same about drivers since 80s, 90s, 2000s, 2010s. It will be same in 50 years that people are just looking at Schumacher, Hamilton "wow they won 7 titles" without having a clue how they won their titles (like we don't really have a clue how Fangio won his titles). History will only remember winners. Nobody is talking about how that one guy would have won, if his engine wouldn't have blew up so often etc.. Having engine that doesn't blow up every race part of the sport though :P It's just speculation (sometimes fun), who actually was the best driver each year and should have won, if his car would have been more reliable.

    Like for example, Hamilton and Massa in 2008 or Verstappen and Hamilton in 2021 it all went down in the last lap and having only of the two get 250 undermines the efforts of the other IMO.

    Yeah doesn't seem completely right that Kimi is missing but Verstappen is on here. Points adjusted Kimi should definitely have more points than Verstappen. He has more victories, won the same amount of titles, came 2nd in the championship twice, and 3rd three times, and raced in like three times as many seasons. Something must be missing there, or maybe I am misunderstanding the system.
    Also someone in the comments pointed out Niki Lauda was missing one of his championship bonuses. Not sure how much there is to that. But yeah, these are my thoughts.

    Love your videos, and this one is great! At least the top really reflects what I feel like the greatest of all time drivers. If I were to do that, I would not change the points distribution per race (as pilots raced according to the rules of their championships, not the 2021 rules), but would only give % of total championship points or similar. So a win by Hamilton in a 20+ races season would be far less that a win by Farina in a 6 races season.
    Also, something is off with Nikki Lauda: look in 1978, he only has ~550 pts, whereas he already has 2 championships under his belt. I feel like he's missing one of the 250 points bonus from championships and should finish somewhere in the ~1200s next to Jim Clark.
