I absolutely love your points system, it's so different from what everyone else does. That's why I watch different poketubers, cause I love the different approaches. Anyways, thanks for doing what you do Matt and I hope you have a good day!
Thanks! The main idea is to model off of the actual speedrun and the manips and all of that feed into that but with in-game time being slightly wonky on higher speeds and not innately taking resets into account, I had to devise some sort of formula to give me a way to rank everything lol. It's a little over-engineered but like most things once you do the work once, you have it forever!
29:00 And at that moment as it finally disappeared for good, the deed irrevocably done, Matt sat back and thought to himself "Well that's a wrap on that."
Yea in Yellow level 10 felt great for Brock and I routed a while and I was like let me try Red and you can just do it at the same level without even needing wrap for Onix. Kind of wild lol.
Pokemon Red actually contains another glitch where the fifth question in the Cinnabar Gym only ever has one solution, when of course the contents of TM28 exist in a sort of multi-dimensional quantum state.
he’s just simply good. I never used him gen 1 because surfing into an endless jelly farm ocean drove my little kid brain mad. Gen 2, theirs so many interesting water Pokémon I had no reason to use him till years later when I had a better understanding of the stats and ease to catch a thing.
I appreciate the narration usually assuming, especially as more and more mons get their turn, some baseline familiarity with solo runs. Relevant split comparisons, statistical context, and not re-explaining the badge boost glitch every video.
Every once in a while I'll circle around to elaborate on something because I know there's always new people but I'm also not dumb enough to think people will have only seen my videos and not huge channels like Jrose lol. I'm working on a balance. I think I could cut a few minutes from every video but that would be more work than it's worth.
Yea Sabrina was a spot it felt necessary on but cutting it out for the final 7~ battles of the game helped. I could not stand the thought of bringing it into the champion fight lol.
2 weeks in a row of being VERY surpised. I loved last week how it was the swords dance and crush things and then this week the oppiste of barrier up and nothing hurts. Fun dynamic across 2 weeks and another very fun video.
Yea I think I'll be circling the wagons and going back to a 2021 'cross gen' run when I was doing Sanqui. It's time to redo some of those old Pokemon that had to suffer in that awful Sanqui world lol.
Real One!!! Crazy that you had 95% routed on yellow then switched. Also like the fact you did not wrap every single battle and took the risk in the couple key battles and I’m surprised by the beating Brock at level 10 👏🏻👏🏻 always enjoy the videos bro. And I can’t speak for everyone but I’m excited for you to dip your toes back into crystal 🤘🏻. And what Cruel could have been without that Slow level up.
This is only on my radar and I haven't made any further work on it, but the Paldean form Toedscruel is a medium slow Grass/Ground with access to spore. It's ability holds it back but we've seen Slaking and Regigigas lol.
I love this thing to this day for challenge runs and Nuzlockes. Such a great special wall and it hits surprisingly hard with Scald/Surf/Hydro Pump/Sludge Wave...
"Rhydon, the living Hyper Potion" 🤣 Tentacruel's been a consistently solid Pokemon since Gen 1. Even though Gen 2's Special split shifted most of its stats to SpD rather than SpA it's basically always been a great Pokemon, both in casual and competitive play.
Rhydon Smoothies~~ Yum Yum Yum~~ LOL to see Gyarados Hyper Beam just did around 30 damage to this Jellyfish, its defense is just sooo high after all the Barrier moves done Good work GLM, Tentacruel really impressed me! Looking forward to the next one!
Yea, gonna do some wacky cross gen or Crystal then get back to the evolved bangers. The Gyarados was Tentacool's biggest problem and I figured 'eh swords dance is better because it badge boosts and also lets me hit hard if I hang on to this or that move' but I found myself just eating damage on Lance.
Sweet, an OG favorite of mine! That epidose of the show made me catch one and use it on my team. It quickly outclassed my Blastoise, lmao. Been shiny hunting for a few in Arceus, but it wants to give me every other water type. I'll get one soon, and an alpha too!
The 9/11, knocking down buildings banned episode? Yea it was a beast lol. It definitely made it look intimidating. Shiny Tentacool is one that’s evaded me over the years too. I have nearly every other Kanto mon in some form and it eludes me.
Nice run; I always thought tentacruel was pretty strong because it has nice special and kinda counters the starters which is mostly what I used as a kid
It's wreaking havoc in PoGo PvP atm as well. Counters fairies, has blizzard to make dragons think twice, scald with a debuff chance for all other situations, and poison jab and being grass neutral wrecks something looking to soft counter. I have a new appreciate for the UU god!
Love your videos. Do you use retroarch? Could you share your settings to play on 3x? I cant avoid multiple clicks when pressing one single time :(. I'd appreciate a lot!
Lmao, I don't think I've ever mentioned the pokerap. I'd call it one of the crigiest things to ever release in the history of mankind tbh. I have nostalgia for it but just rapping the names of Pokemon...that's not it.
It's on the list but I've been really hesitant to do non pseudo/non legendary cross gen runs for a while. Toedscruel/Grimmsnarl/Coalossal are some runs I'd like to see personally that I'll probably get to soon!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Yeeaah I get you. You did mention the whole issue of the non-legendary/pseudo mon videos underperforming in comparison. Which honestly sucks, I really do like when these unique or exotic pokémon get some attention. Either way, gotta watch the Amphy video for now before continuing with the saga of catching up with the previous runs.
Tentacurl is one of my favorites in gen 1! And you played with it phenomenally!😊 I really like the amount of risk you took there with warp. I used a lot of warps in the randomized run because I didn't get water gun at Mount moon.😂😂 And yeah warp is a luck fest, while hoping to not get hit by a psychic move.😊 Watching you minimize these time losses while taking risks, is very inspiring.😮 Having Tentacurl at 9th place is fitting, because in terms of stats it has it all the things it needs to be top tier solo runner, a a fast water type with the poison type it makes some fights very trivial like Blaine,Rival 6, and even Lorelei in a sense. Even though the slow leveling growth rate is good for something, and that's some quick set up with the badge boost, with a lot of exp manipulation. 😊 The thumbnail is very cool! I love that Tentacurl is looking down at everything and the new addition of that mini cartridge is really super cool. Keep it up!😊
Wrap is OP and great, especially if you don't care much about time or whatever the case may be. In a vacuum, you can just use it and win everything with such high speed. I'm glad you are inspired because you owe the world some runs. I'm joking but still ready. Yea, I'm never happy with the thumbnails and have went through like 10 iterations the last year or so. I decided to draw a cartridge for each game I play because 'less is more' is what I'm going for. Draw the Pokemon really big, put the game down, put an arrow to it and even the most simple, never played Pokemon in their life person could look at it and say 'oh that's Tentacruel in Pokemon Red!'. Haha. I thought about redoing the old ones too but it's a lot of work. I really liked the Tentacruel pose but this one was painful because I accidentally used different shades of black in the 'void' area and it doesn't show up on tablet but shows up on my computer so I had to redo it like 4 times but it turned out well! Now it's on to Flygon for next week and school starts back today! Yay, lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Warp is kind like the sand attack of attacking it works, but it takes luck and time. After doing that run, I ended up disliking that move. Creating a good thumbnail is hard, because it's about finding a good balance between the visual elements and text. I find 85% isn't too bad and you have the bulk to not worry about the odd miss here and there but it just having a lot of text and taking multiple turns just to do the same damage as like Stomp is where it falls short of me. I second guess mine too. I tell myself if my thumbnail looks professional then it'll help a lot and I haven't noticed a damn bit of difference so I'm just going for something aesthetically pleasing to me lol. Ha, it means school started back yesterday and it's back to the grind! It never ends lol. I used to ask for opinions to try and improve a good bit but I found there's a lot of 'yes men' out there and will say anything looks good and I'm trying to be critiqued and improve, not stroke my ego that I'm 'as good as x person' or whatever.
Hey man first video i've seen of yours. Pretty good over all. I'm curious of what version of red your using. Never seen that trainer backsprite before.
It’s mainly vanilla with some quality of life things like an updated color palette and increased back sprite sizes to make them easier to make. I made the red trainer sprite myself! There was a Gen 2-3 mod and I just redid it.
It's fine but it's a move with 75 max power that takes 5x longer to do the damage that Body Slam would do. It's fine for weaker Pokemon but feels awful on strong pokemon.
tentacruel is a boss. I never used one until I caught a lv35 in the whirl islands area and added to a badly-underleveled team....i was actually grinding on the tentacools in the area........never had any loyalty to any specific water type.
Hi, love your vids, long time viewer, do you have a playlist or link to the music you use in your vids please??? Need some background focus for work. Thank you
Me. "Oh, Tentacruel will be easy, surf and ice beam, 120 Special, 100 Speed, this should be-" *sees water gun at fucking level 22* *remembers Tentacruel for some godforsaken reason is in the slow level-up group* oh no, this might actually be terrible in the start, just dumping on this poor boy. Probably an absolute top tier run despite the exp group if it started with water gun. EDIT: Surprised with the Brock fight, nice to see Tentacruel doing enough damage with acid that the quad resist doesn't roll it into doing no damage as it sometimes does.
I’ll talk about the no damage Brock split in a video soon enough haha. Maybe a few weeks but this Pokémon really doesn’t look good but it did really good.
Disqualifies it from what? This isn't a speedrun.com submission, lol. In general, the alternative if you are a masochist and don't allow yourself to reload for little mistakes is to just restart the run and that's just silly. Glad you are paying attention and all but, no, I don't punish myself that hardcore for simple accidents.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 idk why English teachers always feel the need to be so pretentious like that lol aren’t you studying computer science? I would have just told them “bro, 90% of my colleagues won’t even be native speakers. Just let me pass”
Close! Computer engineering tech is the official term for the degree but pretty much. It was just some credits that didn't slip through from the last time I got a degree but I still like feedback. Like you spend a few days writing a paper and you want to know why it wasn't perfect.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 what kind of teacher doesn’t give constructive feedback to help students improve? Smh you know they’re not the best educator when you pass DESPITE their best efforts Gl finishing up the degree though. I finished my masters 2 years ago and watched almost exclusively Pokémon solo run content whilst writing my papers. You, Scott, and Jrose kept my ADHD ass focused until I got the most expensive piece of paper I’ve ever owned
Surge's reputation imo is justified outside of electric-weak pokémon. He has 3 fast pokémon, so in most cases, the x speed seems like a waste since they might outspeed you anyways, and their coverage is normal and electric moves. Not to mention that Voltorb and Pikachu are just genuinely weak pokémon. If you don't have an electric weak pokémon, his boss A.I. doesn't trigger so e.g. the Raichu only has a 50% chance of even hitting you with a move, 25% for an actually strong one. Compare with how Brock just is a brick wall for many pokémon, and how Starmie's BST is very high for that point in the game. Or how Erika has 3 fully evolved pokémon (even though Tangela's trash lol) Surge, if not weak to it, definitely feels like the easiest to beat consistently out of them. Imo, he should have had a Jolteon or an Electabuzz or something like that. I actually think the jump from Surge to Erika is quite staggering and Erika is sneakily strong as a gym leader, probably why they nerfed her into the ground (which imo was unwarranted), and Erika mostly gets ignored on her strength because people either have a flying type for fly normally, or many just chose Charmander for whom Erika is the first easy gym battle. Talking about good A.I. - This is the list of trainers having it Sailor Pokémaniac Burglar Fisher Swimmer Beauty Rocker Cooltrainers What kinda random assortment of trainers is this, lol?
Yea that’s why I think Yellow Surge is so interesting. The Raichu’s high level and base speed are interesting enough to get past some things and high crit with a random mega kick or thunderbolt can just get you. It’s random by nature and I always try to highlight the fact it can end you in older videos but Surge on R/B when you are weak can be a menace?”! As for the good ai list, it’s just a ‘thank god’ moment they didn’t put Hikers on the list. Rock Tunnel is rough enough for some Pokémon.
Supersonic on Brock is a new one unless you’re named zubat lol. Tentacruel is a beast in Gen 1, so many advantages despite not having a very good move pool. I know you hate wrap, it definitely isn’t a universal solution but it does solve problems that would force you to over train. If only it had toedscruel’s growth rate.
I don't mind wrap, it's just slow and wastes a ton of time. In Yellow I was to the point where even on the champion fight I was using it to stall out Pokemon to get them into a range and it just wasn't working out for me. I'm glad I could eventually drop in Red to have a solid time. I didn't focus on wrap or anything in the title because there are more Pokemon that will use it to hell in back in the future I suspect lol.
It's kind of like Snorlax. It feels decent but over the course of a run, going second adds up to a bunch of time and if you just keep wrap the whole game, you end up globbing on minutes upon minutes to your time. I think I found a good middle ground to avoid tedious early training and being strong enough late to not need it!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 makes sense as a comparison, amazing stats but just held back enough by its subpar move pool and growth rate to be really amazing. It would be really dumb if it got amnesia lol, or even just started with a water move and got psychic and thunderbolt it would be just a straight upgrade to starmie. Even just getting sludge might make it worth running swords dance.
Yea Sludge/Body Slam would skew it towards that for sure but competitive play would be in shambles and Tentacruel is already the UU king there. It's just funny to talk about the improvements when it already scored so high lol. Too much of a buff and it might be Alakazam tier.
They are from the official Gamefreak 1997 Spaceworld Demo. Basically the beta Gold/Silver. It's just something different when you've been playing the same thing for years lol.
Ha, it's a brief respite in a sea of threats. It might even be a max potion in most situations along with some free boosts. It's the gift that keeps giving.
Yea, that's what 55% accuracy to 100% accuracy gets you lol. Something could have 800 base power but people wouldn't use it with 55% accuracy lol. Good luck with those sets, haha. They sound slow!
Was listening to this while sleepy and found the idea of the far right biker being heavily conservative irrationaly funny for some reason. Music on point as always, makes listening to these as audio only really enjoyable 👌
8:32 you learned bubble beam over wrap. 8:47 You got wrap again. Totally cheated run dislike unsubscribe bye! More on the serious note: How do you handle cases like that? Do you cheat it back in or do you load?
Usually I realize instantly and reload but it kind of slipped into this one. I tend to not pretty lax on punishing myself for silly mistakes that I make that greatly impact the run lol. The alternates are to just restart the entire run or just have a significantly worse run and just act like Tentacruel is worse than it really is because I held down the A button too long on x3 speed. You aren’t the first person to point it out but at least you have a joking tone. Someone said it disqualifies the run and I’m like…what is this? An official speedrun?

@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Well good job making the sprite then. It looks well done.
I'm a fan of the arts. It's basically the Fire Red sprite toned down.
It was funny during rock tunnel when you were beating down on wrap.
Real One!
Yea it’s pretty bulky so it loses its raw power from Gen 1 but the moves are just better.
Hi, love your vids, long time viewer, do you have a playlist or link to the music you use in your vids please??? Need some background focus for work. Thank you
I just use Pokemon music. Gen 1-3 ost, Pokemon TCG ost.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 the intro of this vid for exemple?
There's like a 'relaxing super nintendo' playlist I pull a lot from. You'd have dig through that.
in this time line, bruno was fired.
He's been gone!
Nice let me go grab a sodi pop
Sounded like a plan!
Me. "Oh, Tentacruel will be easy, surf and ice beam, 120 Special, 100 Speed, this should be-" *sees water gun at fucking level 22*
*remembers Tentacruel for some godforsaken reason is in the slow level-up group*
oh no, this might actually be terrible in the start, just dumping on this poor boy.
Heck yeah Tentacruel! Too tier like I knew it was. Didn't even need to badge boost much.
Well I mainly boosted to get slightly better ranges because you'll never one shot Alakazam or Gyarados with the moves Tentacruel has but it did well!
It looks like you loaded a state to change overwriting Wrap to overwriting Supersonic with Bubblebeam. That immediately disqualifies this, doesn't it?
Disqualifies it from what? This isn't a speedrun.com submission, lol. In general, the alternative if you are a masochist and don't allow yourself to reload for little mistakes is to just restart the run and that's just silly. Glad you are paying attention and all but, no, I don't punish myself that hardcore for simple accidents.
My man used antithetical correctly in a sentence, damn. Your AP English teacher is crying tears of joy right now
Lol, I just got out of English last year actually! I hated it because the teacher would mark off and not tell you why but I got that A, haha.
Smh you know they’re not the best educator when you pass DESPITE their best efforts
Gl finishing up the degree though. I finished my masters 2 years ago and watched almost exclusively Pokémon solo run content whilst writing my papers. You, Scott, and Jrose kept my ADHD ass focused until I got the most expensive piece of paper I’ve ever owned
Never thought it would be true but the Rival’s Gyrados could have done more damage to you with a Dragon Rage rather than that Hyper Beam haha
The power of barrier!
Great run!
It was a really solid one! Top 10!
Or how Erika has 3 fully evolved pokémon (even though Tangela's trash lol)
Surge, if not weak to it, definitely feels like the easiest to beat consistently out of them.
- This is the list of trainers having it
Sailor
Pokémaniac
Burglar
Fisher
Swimmer
Beauty
Rocker
Cooltrainers
What kinda random assortment of trainers is this, lol?
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 that’s fair. I think it feels slower than it actually plays.
TOMBSTONER, BROTHER!!!
Appreciate it brother.
Only matched by CHUCK, BROTHER.
Wait until Wattson, brother (or whatever Gen 3 ends up being lol)
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Man you’ve got me hyped now.
Great video. I think those special back sprites aren't great though
They are from the official Gamefreak 1997 Spaceworld Demo. Basically the beta Gold/Silver. It's just something different when you've been playing the same thing for years lol.
Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching!
best tenta nickname is Squilliam Fancypants III
Definitely the most overused!
Tentacruel would be pretty crazy if it didn't have poison typing.
I think it would lose a lot of it's unique flavor. Neutral to grass and can hit back hard is pretty nice.
true@@GymLeaderMatt1987
Gastleys used to look sick!
It looked goofy to me but before the anime it was just some gas and not a ball lol.
35:50 Geodude would be epic.. Dude!
Maybe one day. Who knows, I might get distracted and just do whatever I feel like. The horror!
17:50 "A far right biker who has four Grimers"
Does he believe in QAnon conspiracies
No but he still deflects and blames Obama while bringing up Hilary as if it wasn’t nearly a decade ago. He’s lost all touch with reality.
My prediction is Tentacruel has fun!
It's got cruel in the name. It's not here for fun.
I got my sodie pop and ready
Thats what I'm talking about!
How can you do my boy rhydon like that lmao
Ha, it's a brief respite in a sea of threats. It might even be a max potion in most situations along with some free boosts. It's the gift that keeps giving.
What if Cubone had a club in gen 1?
It would go from being one of the lowest rated Pokemon in the game to maybe in the bottom 15 lol.
Prediction level 60 time 2 hours 30 minutes
Slow level up and time sinks with wrap and rival trouble do it in
TOMBSTONER BROTHER
Not too far off!
Tombstoner brother!!
Appreciate it!
Supersonic > trash
Confuse ray > fuk i love this scumbag move
You know what I would love, a grass Pokemon with leech seed, stun spore and confuse ray
What I would love is a grass Pokemon with:
Leech seed
Stun spore
Confuse ray
Yea, that's what 55% accuracy to 100% accuracy gets you lol. Something could have 800 base power but people wouldn't use it with 55% accuracy lol. Good luck with those sets, haha. They sound slow!
I dont understand the tombstoner thing
Now you are starting to understand.
In the Cinnabar Gym, you are asked a trivia question asking if TM28 is TOMBSTONER.
I thought Barrier didn’t do badge boosts
Sounds like you are thinking of reflect. Barrier raises your defense stat and modifying stats trigger the boosts. We can see the numbers on screen!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I am thinking of reflect thanks for the clarification
Here before *those* tentacle comments
Been pretty tame thus far!
What does CUK mean?
I'm not sure you want the answer. If the word cuck means nothing to you, just leave it alone lol.
Little Timmy sit down.
Timmy, Jimmy, and Johnny can all sit down!
Liking and commenting for the sodie-pop algorithm 🎉
Appreciate it.
So you trying to say Surge is not a low level army man?😮
Watch the tone of a Jrose video when he is using something weak to electric lol.
Was listening to this while sleepy and found the idea of the far right biker being heavily conservative irrationaly funny for some reason. Music on point as always, makes listening to these as audio only really enjoyable 👌
On his bike saying words like woke and snowflake lol.
MEGA DRAIN ME DAMNIT
Only if you are double weak!
I'm a real one, brother
I appreciate that a lot!
Thanks for the video! I have no useful or interesting comments.
No worries!
I'm from Texas. I subscribed, I like your accent
Thanks! Most don't, lol.
Bro why’d you delete the fallout shelter videos? They were so good
What's fallout shelter?
I think swords dance was so wasted on this Pokémon when others should get it. 😢
I mean I think it works well with Wrap.
Body Slam or even getting Sludge might make you look twice but I, for one, will not be using wrap and swords dance. No thank you lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I don't blame ya really, I get the vibe even with SD its way too slow.
I wonder if anyone brings a gen 1 Tentacruel with Swords Dance over to gen 2 to give it Sludge Bomb
Real one
Appreciate it, brother.
real one :D
Appreciate it, brother.
Yooo
Yo, brother. I have no clue what the other comment is on about lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 me either lol but tentacruel tho i thought it learns thunder in gen2
I’m not sure about Gen 2 but definitely not in Gen 1.
Couldn't be first comment twice in a row 😢🎉
Should’ve counted the comments and said ‘79th’ or whatever. At least that would have been funny.
