Appreciate that! Yea I like the whole thing but like all stuff in life, it's just a matter of learning. I had a starting point and just learned from there. There's like 10 skills on display that go into making a video lol.
Yea poison damage is immune but if it's like a full blown effect with no damage like Poison Gas or Toxic the game looks at it, doesn't really think of it as poison, and let's the effect go through. That's the best explanation of how it works. Weird but it's not worth rewriting the code for since it generally only happens on Koga.
The 2 runs were really neck and neck with one other. Until the very end I wasn't sure who will take the crown, but both were really fast😮. But in the end the steel typing with psychic typing in gen 1 can sure make wonders. And you got a point about not picking up certain items. My muscle memory and old habits that die hard ,are giving me small time losses ,that in the end became really huge. I really like the format of this match. So thanks for that. Sausage's green sprite makes it look like an angry sausage😂😂😂 . Maybe it is angry because it was one shoted. I really got a good laugh out of the Sausage reference in the video, especially after a long day.😊
Oh yea, when you are trying to push the speed barrier, you have to really see if you need to do anything. I tried cutting out the gentleman candy and 10th floor Silph candy but it's just too much for slow leveling group Pokemon in most cases. I guess it's all relative to your playstyle and what you want to accomplish but for me, extra proteins/carbos/vitamins in general really add to my personal times. I do think everything looks good and I'm happy with the product and excited that any part can inspire someone else! I'm also always excited to throw in sausage references into all the videos now lol. It's just too good. Views are a little meh though. I am not happy with how the channel is trending the past couple of months lol. Nothing kills motivation faster than being like 'I'm putting in more work but things are going worse than they were a year ago!'.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I'm not using any vitamins in my runs because my rules won't allow it,but I pick them up to sell them later, which is a mistake, but old habits die hard. 😂 But that can improve the time overall. I really like your videos , because they are really chill, but informative and usually I like watching them especially whenever I'm after a long day,and I don't have the motivation to work on my videos, I suddenly have a badge boost and I can start working on them. The Dugtrio run is going to be filled with sausage jokes. I'll probably have a counter on these 🤣🤣🤣. Looking at the views of some videos and comparing them ,can sometimes feel really frustrating. Because you then are wondering what you're doing wrong. Sometimes that can really get to you. Once I feel unmotivated, I just tell myself that I'm improving for the next video ,and try out a different approach. I think RUclips doesn't recommend solo runs all that much like they used to , I'm not sure... Or maybe in January the views are lower in general.🤔
It's all about finding what works for sure. I think with Dugtrio I'm going to name it and just leave it at that and see how many people are confused lol. As for views and what not, I just think no one else is doing content right now. Literally Mah Dry Bread has done one Pokemon video in 2024 and no one else really has. It's a drought and I'm just kind of on an island being punished for everyone taking a break it feels like lol. RUclips would SUCK as a full time job. It's so inconsistent and up and down.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 🤣🤣🤣 I'm not sure, but I bet it would be funny, even though it would struggle in the mid game. But I'm Looking forward to seeing how fast it could have been. Yup taking a break on RUclips kind of sucks , because you are in most cases punished for that. Doing it full time is challenging at the very least , especially if you are a one man show. Solo runs are getting pushed to the sidelines. And if the popular creators are not doing it that much , RUclips will slowly categorize that as something that is not interesting enough to be recommended as often . But at least most of the viewers that are still watching that type of content are really loyal. Like drought, it will end at some point, because the rain will come at some point.😊💪
Late, late, late but I'm just trying to stick with it without getting negative about it. I've always just seen this as a hobby and I just like to learn, get better, build a little community, and just have fun with it. Interacting with people like you and just enjoying myself is the main part and any sort of views or whatever that goes with it is just a little vienna sausage on the side.
Erika my beloved. I totally agree with what you said about her being the most underrated gym leader. She has some amazing tools to work with, but I guess she's "easy" because you can delay the fight against her for so long, the game just opens up so much after Misty (and you usually just get a Dugtrio for Surge and call it a day).
Your steel type was poisoned by toxic in your loss to Agatha but I don’t think that damage changed anything and would have resulted in a loss anyway. Your cross Gen runs are top notch - love this content - you’re a real one.
Thanks! Yea, it's unavoiadable. Things like poison gas or toxic that don't technically do poison damage can still hit through the immunity. It happened on a really old Dialga video I had as well.
My initial guess for the victor was Metagross, but when you talked about the power of Stone Edge I had my doubts. Unfortunate that Tyranitar wasn't able to cinch the victory, but it makes sense because of the moves that Tyranitar has to rely on compared to Metagross. If Tyranitar got Dragon Dance by level up (say, at the same level Metagross got Meteor Mash), I think it could definitely turn the tide in Ttar's favor; but alas, that move is locked away in its TM/egg move learnset. In the end, it's just good to see that both of the non-Dragon pseudos had a good showing overall.
The bit where you explain meta getting psychic via level up to save time, yea those things absolutely matter ! Those are the little things that go into making a speed run
Badge boosting off of Hammer Arm seems hilariously unfair. Gotta say I’m a little disappointed that Metagross is so good that it doesn’t need it. 😂 Thanks for the video!
I've used Hammer Arm in other runs and it's really not too great of a move. Unless you have Regieleki levels of speed, the drawback is just too hefty. I like it as a finisher though and it's a neat concept to play around with but I'd be shocked if any Pokemon would keep the move deep into a run!
Too bad he lost like 60% of his skill after the gimmick change. He was truly one of the best wrestlers in the 80's, 90's. Frakensteiners and all that was cool to see.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 he was almost 40 and had been wrestling 14 years at that point so part of it would’ve been the wear and tear on his joints too. Plus he had a guaranteed contract so the motivation wasn’t there anymore.
Great vid brother! About halfway through so far. Interesting how good defensively the new types are but really not that useful offensively in gen one (for Dark its the special split) Couple of questions - Why is toxic banned? I'm glad as its dull but is it some sort of exploit i don't know about? Also the Repel before the Snorlax did that affect catch rate?
You got it right, it’s just dull and boring. Stalling out fights never feels good to play or watch. The repel at Snorlax is just a speedrun tactic. The catch rate is maxed in my ROMs so HM Pokémon don’t skew the data. There wasn’t any correlation!
Well this was fun, Tyranitar is my favorite Pokémon, period, but realistically game freak hates rock types and steel/psychic is a ridiculous typing pre gen 6, and really even then. Totally fair point about the power of stone edge, it’s ridiculous and in singles it’s worth the trade off for accuracy but it’s still annoying that there aren’t any 100% accurate good rock moves except for ivy cudgel in the worst ogerpon form. It does make me wonder about what Pokémon best abuse gen 1 crit mechanics, it seems like most things that learn a lot of high crit moves are either to slow to abuse them effectively or have a bad growth rate, or have their stats in the wrong attack for their typing.
For the accuracy, I watched someone say they don’t use Blizzard because it’s 90% only and it’s just kind of dumb to have that mindset. Live a little! 80% will hit most the time!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 really? Gen 1 blizzard is one of the most broken moves in Pokémon. Even with accuracy trade off that makes the effective power 108! And it had a 30% freeze chance in the Japanese games. High power moves are worth it if you come out in the positive, playing conservative is just slow. Get luckier.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I just learned there’s a VGC team comp called Casino where you run a bunch of high powered, inaccurate moves and the piloting skill is just putting yourself in position to take more swings at 1 shots than the opponent gets 2 shots and you come out ahead mathematically even if you don’t get particularly lucky. Seems like the same ethos.
Hey it took me like a year+ of talking to Scott, doing well in his races, and articulating my thoughts to get him to admit Double Edge is actually pretty good. I think what finally got him to see it was saying 'It's just the normal version of EQ but you need to slightly plan for the recoil'. Some people just don't do the math and they let confirmation bias stand in the way of true greatness lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 lol, solid work there, Scott tends to play a little to conservative. It’s a good point though, recoil feels bad in a solo run but you don’t need to finish the fight with more than 1 HP and double edge gets better ranges sometimes. 100 base power with 100 accuracy is essentially an ideal Pokémon move, everything would love to have a move like that, IE earthquake.
19:15 oh, is it not possible or did you just forget to program steel being immune to poison gas? Dunno how you wrangle the spaghetti code of gen 1 exactly.
It's just hard coded. Like if there was a normal move that caused paralysis, it would work on Gengar. The only parameter is that it can't be a poison type. You could probably go in and clean up/write new code but that's a hefty endeavor.
The way status conditions are hard coded, you can still get hit with poison status despite being immune to the moves. It's a gen 1 quirk. For example, Poison Sting wouldn't have any effect but Poison Gas can still get through since it's not doing any damage.
Yea it has something to do with it not doing poison damage but just doing an effect. It would be immune to like sludge but not poison gas for example. It’s just a weird quirk.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Well yeah, that part is obvious. By default all Status Moves ignore Type Effectivity (except in Gen 2/3): Sand-Attack(Ground) hits Flying Types, Sand-Attack(Normal in Gen 1)/Disable(Normal) work on Ghost Types, Destiny Bond/Curse(Ghost) work on Normal Types, etc. Thunder Wave failing against Ground Types is an exception, programmed into the move itself, since Gen 1. The really interesting part is that "Status immunity" in Gen 1 is exclusively based on Same Type Attack Protection, aka all Pokémon are immune to secondary effects of Moves they share a type with. Thus in Gen 1: Thunder Wave paralyzes only non-electric types. Body Slam paralyses only non-normal Types. Poison Gas/Toxic poisons non-poison Types. Twineedle poisons non-bug Types. Triplette burns, paralyses or freezes non-normal types. Thus, yeah Steel Types getting poisoned by Poison Gas/Toxic/Twineedle makes sense as well.
Remember, meta stands for most effective tactics available and you can't ignore that unless you want to be a low ELO scrub! You either play the meta or play the anti-meta!
I'm not too surprised that Metagross beat Tyranitar, however I think the bad luck Tyranitar had, vs the good luck Metagross had was another factor, but even without the bad luck, I still think Metagross would come out on top due to it's slightly better speed stat, and access to the badge boost glitch. All in all, they both did incredibly well, expect no less from Psuedo legendaries, also Real One.
For sure. Keep in mind I did like 7 runs with Ttar to get results as fast as I could where I was already just playing with house money by the time I was on my 4th Metagross run.
Hi Matt! Just starting this one and it already looks so clean! I know you’ve talked about how match-ups take a lot more energy and so ya worry doing them, but I just wanted to say it looks great. To your starting question though, I’m really guessing Metagross takes this one. Psychic and Steel are just such OP types in Gen 1. XD
Thanks! Yea this one took a little longer than I would have liked but I at least wanted to give it a shot. It's interesting because it looks like there's a clear winner but it stays close!
I really appreciate the work you've done with the overlay, I just noticed the exp bar gain, I like that. I immediately paused once I saw the video time, and bought a large pizza and some orange soda pop 😂
I knew Tyranitar wasn't going to catch up to Metagross, but I'm pleasantly surprised that Tyranitar outperformed its mechanical counterpart Iron Thorns.
Real one here. I'll always have a soft spot for the Green sprites. Ponyta and Rapidash genuinely look majestic here, and no one can deny the power of Chonky Gengar! Can't say I'm too surprised Metagross took the crown here. Psychic is always busyed in Gen 1 and backporting his best moves was just overkill. Excellent runs for both Metagross and Tyranitar!
Hard disagree. I did double the Ttar runs than I did Metagross runs. It just so happened that it's absolute best run was the one that had a single fight with bad luck in it. The champion fight luck wasn't even needed for Metagross. I just needed a boost on Exeggutor to make it guaranteed but even with no boosts it still would have won at a very high percentage. I put in a lot of work for Ttar to actually be able to compete and I tried my best to articulate how many more runs it took with Ttar so, if anything, Metagross would crush it even harder if I doubled the runs with it.
Commenting before watching, I think Metagross should be faster. I'm pretty excited to watch the video, both pokemon are so epic, but I don't think it's going to be close, Metagross typing is too dominant
Now I've watched the entire video and I have to say I am super impressed with Tyranitar and with how close it was. Both of my comments are just copies of you already pointed out in the video, but that wasn't intentional. It was a really great video and the things that you can do with custom roms are pretty amazing, too bad it is a lot of work. I was here for old videos like the first Kyogre and the other ones that used that pre-made ROM, and you've come a long way.
@GymLeaderMatt1987 yeah! There's someone on RUclips doing polls for each Pokémon for whether we like the Red, Green, or Yellow sprite best and it's been fun to see them.

Wondering why you didn't give Tyranitar access to Thunderbolt or Flamethrower. When it does get both in any other game.
Flamethrower isn’t a tm in Gen 1 but I went over thunderbolt after surge!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Oh lol, must've missed that. Gotcha then!
15:30 original Green version or the Gen 3 one?
The sprites scream Gen 3.
Really like this format 👍🏽
#realone
Appreciate that!
Nice video just one thing isn´t steel immune to poison? Sorry for my english I´m german.
The way status conditions are hard coded, you can still get hit with poison status despite being immune to the moves. It's a gen 1 quirk. For example, Poison Sting wouldn't have any effect but Poison Gas can still get through since it's not doing any damage.
The weirdest part was Metagross getting poisoned...
But yeah, it makes sense by Gen 1. mechanics...
Thus in Gen 1:
Thunder Wave paralyzes only non-electric types.
Body Slam paralyses only non-normal Types.
Poison Gas/Toxic poisons non-poison Types.
Twineedle poisons non-bug Types.
Triplette burns, paralyses or freezes non-normal types.
Thus, yeah Steel Types getting poisoned by Poison Gas/Toxic/Twineedle makes sense as well.
Have you ever thought about nerfing the movesets for Pokémon like this at lv 5?
As much as I’ve thought about nerfing Mewtwo or Articuno.
🫡
i really wanna make mods for gen 1 ou after watching your cross gen runs
What's stopping you?
someone who can code@@GymLeaderMatt1987
as in I need someone who can code
Good luck!
Great video, can you add stuff like levitate and earthquake hitting Pokémon using dig? #RealOne
Probably more trouble than it’s worth. I simulated abilities sparingly for the Pokémon I’ve ran but never had the time to fully overhaul the game.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I see! Other question then, can you change Fire Red to be broken (badge boosting) like gen1 😂
Gen 1 modding to gen 3 modding is like moving from speaking one language to another! That's a big no from me!
Where's the real ones?
Probably in the forest dancing around rocks. Usually where they stay.
Your voice reminds me of that one guy who made he kiss me for my gun liberals meme. +1
Thanks...maybe. Kind of hard to read, haha.
Quick claw tyranitar. Nothing lives
23% of the time, it works every time!
For the algorithm
Appreciate it!
Commenting before watching.... Gen 1, there no possible way metagross loses this right?
I tried my best!
Tyran is SO much so much better too bad its BASE form takes forever to gain like 50+ lvs to get Tyranitar normally.
You just described every psuedo legendary ever created in the last 30 years lol.
Exactly but some of their base forms still learn good lv up moves even if their final form lv 55+ takes forever to lv up to.
metagross is better is my guess
You got a 50/50 shot!
Y'all talking about (the) meta, gross 😂
Remember, meta stands for most effective tactics available and you can't ignore that unless you want to be a low ELO scrub! You either play the meta or play the anti-meta!
Just a modern dad joke, no implications intended I'm just here for the Tombstoner😂
Enjoy the content
Glad you do!
Yea this is the final form I believe.
I knew Tyranitar wasn't going to catch up to Metagross, but I'm pleasantly surprised that Tyranitar outperformed its mechanical counterpart Iron Thorns.
It was pretty good for it's speed and typing. It held the lead a little bit!
For sure. I think it was much closer than I thought it would be initially but grinding out Ttar routes helped me get it close.
The first thing that I thought of when I saw this video's title is Bruno's Machamp, I hope it won't be too bad for Machamp... Then again, it is Bruno
For sure. If he had good AI, solo runs would look a lot different.
Having done a gen 3 run starting with Beldum and just Take Down... yeah, good call on the move sets lol
That sounds horrible!
12:26 Key Advice for life 👌
#GuruLegendMatt 😊
Metagross have been way more lucky through this run, i think that with the current movesets Tyranitar can go faster on average
I put in a lot of work for Ttar to actually be able to compete and I tried my best to articulate how many more runs it took with Ttar so, if anything, Metagross would crush it even harder if I doubled the runs with it.
if it's tombstoner trivia it's worth it
Commenting before watching, I think Metagross should be faster.
I'm pretty excited to watch the video, both pokemon are so epic, but I don't think it's going to be close, Metagross typing is too dominant
Psychic and steel is indeed really good!
Cant believe GF nerfed Tombstoner
Gen 2 took it into the ground lol.
I like all your content, Matt. Real one, brother!
Appreciate that! Glad you like it.
Great run! Enjoyed the format
Glad you enjoyed!
By far one of my favorite videos you’ve put out two heavy hitters. Always enjoy the content you put out brother 🤘🏻
I appreciate that! Glad you enjoyed it.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 watching the replay of Persian right now. Wasn’t able to catch the live
Nice. It was a fun one!
Larvitar is definitely a Pokémon I’d let walk outside of his poke ball and go on my poke-adventures.
Id name him Reptar ! 😎
That’s a good name!
Ooh, I like the Green Charizard sprite.
I like all the sprites!
@GymLeaderMatt1987 yeah! There's someone on RUclips doing polls for each Pokémon for whether we like the Red, Green, or Yellow sprite best and it's been fun to see them.
Excited for this one!
It was a fun one!
Oh shit I’m a real one
You sure are!
Gengers sw sprite looks more menacing to me
It's literally just the G/S/C sprite here. Not much changed from beta to that.
Reminds me of Sasquatch maybe that's why🤷🏾♂️
I'm pulling for ttar but i'm not super optimistic
It'll do you proud!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Just finished the math minute and holy crap I underestimated my boy. Thank you for the break down. It's crazy how much the videos have progressed in the ~2 years I've been watching.

every video you name the rival "Cuk" lmfao
