I think Norman is overpowered in speedruns! We always see the best version so you'll just never see a fight with tons of resets but in every run I've tried so far, you have to go back to the drawing board for Norman every single time. It's rough! Yea, intimidate just automatically makes special attackers superior in the scope of solo runs. You can get one herb to stop one intimidate drop but when there's so many I'm not even sure it would help but its at least interesting to think about.
Big congratulations on the new gym leader! You'll have the most amazing time seeing your little one grow and develop. Enjoy it and again congratulations to the both of you!
Hyped for this one. I can see why it took so long to finish lol, the new overlay looks good though. Gym leader Matt vs Aqua admit Matt is hilarious. The abra really does clean up the routing a lot. It’s worth pointing out that minus speed natures are great, up to a point; depending on growth rate you need something between 65 and 75 base speed to outspeed a handful of important Pokémon like Drake’s salamence.
For sure. Flygon and Salamance are the highest speed Pokemon in the run. I guess some can ignore it but I ran into problems with Swampert so its already an exception to that rule lol.
Love how clean the overlay is, didn’t think I’d miss the movelist but once or twice before brawly I did say to myself “wait when does raquaza learn something else? Let me look and, oh, right.” I do think the cleaner overlay is ultimately better because the viewers can look up the movelist ourselves or we can pay more attention at the beginning of the video and not have goldfish memory, but there’s nothing we can do to make the video look better and more focused on the game itself.
Yea I like the clean look. I custom make the learnsets and I already had a problem early with how much bigger level up sets are in the game so it was already taking up space but shrinking the GBA screen is not an option. I try to show the moves and talk about them but maybe a link would be helpful.
Congrats on becoming a father! My son turned 2 in April. Just these two years have flown by. Early months are so hard, but I hope you’re enjoying it and that everyone is healthy!
So you are doing emerald, good job with the new overlay, i feel like the moveset doesn't need to be on screen at all times. Also, wally's dad didn't appear in ruby and sapphire so he probably appears to make sure the player knows where to get surf.
Swampert...soonish. Probably September. I have the audio/video but it'll be a second before I get the full edit. For a new series, this one didn't do so hot for my viewers lol.
Man I was just wondering over the weekend when you might turn up again and scrolled right past the thumbnail yesterday and wound up accidently clicking on this just now. Hell yeah 😂 happy to see you run with Ray
There is one fundamental truth when it comes to Steven Stone. Credits do not roll when you beat him so caring about him is entirely optional lol. I also don't like his existence as a final fight to a run, Red is challenging but is diverse and a lot of Pokemon have a very accessible option to beating him if you want the best times (Curse), but Steven is such a polarizing fight where you either trounce him because of good coverage or a powerful set-up move, or you eat 27 resets and get situations where objectively good Pokemon get awful times. He has all the same forces that Red does on Gen II runs but magnified by like five times. And he doesn't even give you credits! This was a super awesome run to watch though, glad to see it. I did have one question because I might have missed it early on, but the Abra is guaranteed, right?
Exactly. No credits, officially recognized speedrun doesn’t do it, so I’m out on it lol. But yea Abra, Marill, and Tropius are all guaranteed spawns with the best catch rate I could code in without breaking the ROM lol. Love the Abra route!
Nice. I've started a little higher than normal just because of how long it took to get everything else to work. I've probably been practicing runs since February!
Congratulations on your your new baby and your first Gen 3 run! Hope to see more runs of my favorite Generation. And I think that the couple was playing UNO.
Tropius is one of my favorite Pokemon, so to see them being relevant in any capacity makes me happy. Also, the only thought I have on the overlay; maybe having a transparent triangle behind the numbers, one facing up and the other down, to represent the affected stats from nature might be good? Just a thought. Otherwise, I'm just happy to see Rayquaza with their green flying buddy. And congrats on the baby! And good luck.
I’ll probably do a poll. The first two videos won’t have one but I was more focused on getting it done and it kind of slipped my mind. Brawly might be a little too early in the video, but alliteration is cool. Dewford, Wattson, or something similar comes to mind too!

Oh random request on a future video , I always wondered as a kid what it would be like to start with the end game Mewtwo. Like new game plus with a level 70 Mewtwo off the rip and just see how fast you can shred the game
You can learn a lot from watch and testing speedruns strats, because there are a lot of little time saves that can make a major change.😮 Who'd have thought that Tropius would be great not only for hms but for double battles as well. I really liked that approach. As for gen 3 gyms , I really liked the design especially Flannery's gym. Because I used to struggle to navigate within it as kid.😊 Selecting a quiet nature was interesting choice,it made dragon moves a bit better. Even though for Wallace I think that aerial ace , could have paired well with dragon dance's boosts. But going with this approach I'm not sure who can you set up against, that's why you went with thunderbolt and a stab option.🤔 The overlay's composition is really great, because it's not too overload with data. Maybe the reset counters can change in battle to a small icon of the opposing pokemon spite. 😊 By the way I think that couple is going wonder if tm 28 is really tombstoner or not😂😂😂.
With the speedrun strats, you just can't beat strategies that people have worked on for like decades. They are ironclad and if you try to reinvent the wheel too much, you'll just be missing out. I think Tropius is the point of contention. It makes sense and I've already played the next run but there has been some comments about it. The long and the short of it is that if you just use a lvl 5 HM user to die in a hit, you have to essentially spend every run routing for Tate & Liza. You'd be using candies there no matter what and probably using hidden power Ghost/Dark. Lmao, they are definitely going to talk about TMs. Those tiny little rocks just kept them apart for so long.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Testing is the best way to determine which way to choose, but learning from others can sure time save a lot of these failed tests , that's for sure. I'm glad that the internet in general is helpful for that. Tropius is definitely hm of the month because it can cover so many hm moves in one pokemon, even though it can be a pain to find it, because I think that it's a 5% encounter,if I'm correct...🤔 Hp dark or ghost can help out with the Phoebe as well , but I do think that for some Pokemon that already can access that kind of coverage,(with bite or crunch or shadow ball)maybe hp ice or electric wouldn't be such a bad idea 🤔. But for most hp ghost and dark will be mandatory.
I use hp fighting in the next video. I’ll talk more about the great changes to hidden power but you can basically pick whatever you need with the new IV system and not even feel the stat difference. Compared to Gen 2 where you have like 2-3 options, it’s great!
Fair enough. Enjoyed your run as always (not completely sure how I feel about the Tropius usage yet but your reasoning is sound) - and congratulations on becoming a father. :)
I'm always down for feedback. I'll explain it more in the next video. i already have audio for it but gonna shelf it for a few weeks. Basically, if you just use a weak HM user that dies in one turn, every run is going to have to overlevel/use candies/use HP ghost/dark. It sort of funnels you into a strat just because of how oppressive a 1v2 situation is. I'm down for challenges as long as there are some strategical depth to them but the entire run is different and Tate/Liza just becomes the hardest fight in the game on every run if you do it another way but we'll see! That's what feedback is for!
30:37 It may not matter for your ruleset, but if you only have one Pokémon in your party, this double battle is instead a back-to-back of two single battles. I think the same happens to the Mt. Pyre double battle if you get there without a separate HM user. However, Tate and Liza won’t fight you at all in a single battle.
I’m not at the computer to see the time stamp but you mean in Winona’s gym? I think I tested the Mt Pyre and they just tell you to go away lol but you’d need a Pokémon in your party to not waste a huge chunk of time.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987I’m pretty certain about Winona’s gym, but I’m uncertain about Mt. Pyre. There are two different kinds of double battles: where there’s “one” trainer (like the Twins trainer class or Tate and Liza) or where there are two trainers. They function differently in battle (if it’s against two trainers you can eliminate an entire side and fight only one Pokémon at a time for the rest of the battle). I assumed the Mt. Pyre trainers are the latter (a pair) because they’re individual objects that come from two sides, like in Winona’s gym and the Plusle + Minun duo north of Slateport.
Well you oughta make a starter selection for yor descendant as soon as possible. Sure hope it stays away from grass. Just did one with my niece and got ditto... hope that does not mean personality disorder in the future lol. Congrats!!!
Loved the run, but would also suggest having a weaker pokemon for double battles, at least Tate and Lisa. I get why you wouldn't deposit every other pokemon during the story line but for the Gym leader I would really only use a weak pokemon that can be one shot by Tate and Lisa so it is really the challenge pokemon on its own.
I’ve heard a few people say that but I don’t fully agree. The problem for me is that if you do that, Tate and Liza become the game’s ‘hardest’ battle where 99% of the time your solution is to just add in more training and/or use all of your candies on top of using HP dark/ghost every run. I’m down for making things challenging but forcing yourself to 1v2 Tate & Liza has no nuance or strategy to it. You get no reward or strategical satisfaction to it. It feels like bloat for the sake of bloat and some weird badge of honor, as if seeing Tropius survive 2 extra turns is even that much different than Marill dying on turn one.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I see the point, and I for sure don't have any experience solo-running the game. Maybe when not optimizing for steven and using some rare candies before them and then collecting more candies that are available could negate that. But I get your point. Looking forward to the next runs and seeing your development.
It’s a hard thing to balance. You never want the runs to be funneled into a strict mode that most runs have to follow. With Gen 1 it’s not allowing the Marowak pokedoll skip or double team TM, Gen 2 it’s banning the curse TM, and here it seems like Tate and Liza would force a strict ‘level up to elite 4 levels’ type of approach.
Theres a reason why Scott's Thoughts uses the female protagonist rather than male... did the WR run use the male? Edit: 34:32 and speaking of ST.. he usually uses a splash user in spot #2 for required double battles and deposit all field move users (especially for tate and liza). Personally i feel a cocoon hardener is fine too
World record uses female because they save like 40 frames in a x1 run in a game that's been ran for like 20 years at full optimization, which is the only way that would matter. On faster speeds, I waste 40 frames in the first 2 minutes, bumping into walls. For purposes of higher speed, made up rules, solo runs, it's insignificant. I do use the female in the next run because the rival teams swap up slightly and the female had an easier time in what was otherwise a nightmare fight. I'm just not a fan of just making Tate and Liza harder atm because it gets rid of any nuance and strategy. It's already a stacked fight in a forced double battle scenario. If you just give yourself fodder that dies instantly, you are pigeon-holed into either overlevleing, using rare candies, or using hidden power ghost/dark on every single run and I'd rather give it more flexibility rather than be like 'look at how challenging I made this game!' because you have to think of all the worse Pokemon that aren't Rayquaza, and even it would have had to level given a big handicap.
RE: Stephen your reasons plus, the same reason you don't include Red in the rankings time, Stephen would require special setup for some pokemon just for him (at least assuming your rivals aren't completely crazy), like Red does, so I think the same rule should apply. In the future, could we get some Stephen side content? Probably not, but who knows? But for now, I think it makes sense to leave him out.
@GymLeaderMatt1987 any general guess on what the fastest native pokemon would be for gen 3? Kyogre? Or is there something in a faster levelling group that you reckon will be secret op?
@@rmtsapphire0 I'm really not sure yet but I imagine the rain text and all that every turn would add up but we'll have to see. I'm making my way through the starters and a non-spoiler is that fighting might be THE type, given you can trivialize Tate/Liza.
There's some local software that reads the RAM of the game but it's all graphics and code I wrote myself. You used to be able to get the base and build your own code but a few months ago that guy just disappeared off the internet and took it with him lol.
I study but that’s the extent these days. I practiced the Gen 1 run but x1 speed combined with the absurd amount of button presses turns me away from it. It’s very arthritis inducing to me.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Yeah, I've heard from people that do it that carpal tunnel is a real problem. Makes total sense to me. I enjoyed the run, hope you have a good day!

@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Testing is the best way to determine which way to choose, but learning from others can sure time save a lot of these failed tests , that's for sure. I'm glad that the internet in general is helpful for that.
Tropius is definitely hm of the month because it can cover so many hm moves in one pokemon, even though it can be a pain to find it, because I think that it's a 5% encounter,if I'm correct...🤔
Hp dark or ghost can help out with the Phoebe as well , but I do think that for some Pokemon that already can access that kind of coverage,(with bite or crunch or shadow ball)maybe hp ice or electric wouldn't be such a bad idea 🤔.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Wow, hp fighting that is going to be viable, sounds about right to me. I can't wait to see that in action.😆
Norman is a hell of a roadblock trying to go through the game without over leveling!
Yeah Matt!
I hope you are doing well
Doing great irl!
I got a new baby too, congrats brother!
Nice. Goodbye free time! Haha.
@GymLeaderMatt1987 totally worth it brother!
Lol "hey guys, pokedad GLM here, we gonna play baby mode emerald with all 7 year Olds favorite/only used money rayquaza" 😂
I'd imagine the box art Pokemon are tons of people's favorites!
Cool rayquaza run
Thanks!
I’m opening this now but my biggest question is - who takes the mantle of Tombstoner brother/Chuck brother in Emerald?
I’m not sure yet. I got this and another Emerald video recorded but prob won’t have a ‘brother’ for it either. I’ll probably leave it up to a poll.
Fair enough. Enjoyed your run as always (not completely sure how I feel about the Tropius usage yet but your reasoning is sound) - and congratulations on becoming a father. :)
@@GymLeaderMatt1987Brawly is the only option.
23:40 whitney would like to have a word
True. With two Pokemon known for a rock move though.
Congrats!!!
Ha, maybe when she can comprehend more things for sure!
That couple is obviously off to watch the latest Gym leader Matt video. Where they'll like, comment, and subscribe.
Lmao, I highly doubt it with how these analytics have looked the last few months.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 oof. I mean you did say wrong answers.
BigBadMattyDaddy congrats on parenthood!
Thanks!
They're using rest. It is super effective.
They are really tired being in a cave for all eternity until a kid comes along.
Time to be a real one again
Once a real one, always a real one!
20:52 Tombstoner? BROTHER!
Of course, brother.
congrats on baby
I've included Red in Crystal runs for about a year now! The speed does Red so I swapped to Red but Stephen is not included in the Emerald speedrun.
Sorry I'm late to this one. I literally only just got recommended it :/
Lets go!
Nice. Got two emerald videos to this point with another on the way in November!
Troh-pee-iss
And, which is better. Tropius, marrill, bidoof... when it comes to HM
It's definitely pronounced like tropical, per official Pokemon Plays events. I think surf users are a dime a dozen. I like Tropius.
23:34 There wasn't a Normal type gym in Gen2?
Milk type gym.
Congrats on becoming a dad bro
Tanks!
They obviously went to get house to make pokeblocks.
Hope they picked up the case in Slateport!
How i can get these apps what u have on frame which calculate stats/dmg TMs etc?
There's some local software that reads the RAM of the game but it's all graphics and code I wrote myself. You used to be able to get the base and build your own code but a few months ago that guy just disappeared off the internet and took it with him lol.
Emerald WR is half an hour longer than RBY WR
Ruby/Sapphire is the same length as RBY
Half an hour at x3 speed isn't so bad I guess!
Do you ever do vanilla speed runs?
I study but that’s the extent these days. I practiced the Gen 1 run but x1 speed combined with the absurd amount of button presses turns me away from it. It’s very arthritis inducing to me.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Yeah, I've heard from people that do it that carpal tunnel is a real problem. Makes total sense to me. I enjoyed the run, hope you have a good day!
18:58 they’re gonna watch your earlier videos
That's meta.
@Gymleadermatt1987 well 22:22 which makes it almost fated with the time being the same number ;)
When are we getting mega rayquaza foe a crossgen speed run lol
The main problem is that it would just be like the other run with just a little better stats. I'm not sure how interesting it would be but I wouldn't rule it out.
I like how you say Dewford!
Thanks, maybe. Probably not lol.
