My favorite under used Pokemon is Claydol it has Earthquake Psychic or Rock slide for double battle's it can be a support pokemon with light screen or Reflect that's how it really bulky it's good against the first three gyms the fire gym normal gym & the flying gym it's ok in the seven gym with Tate & Liza bad with the 8 gym though the elite four sadly it's only good against the dragon trainer because of Rock Slide did I forgot it had levitate too man this this is good:) Love Claydol!
I know nobody asked, but I think Juan should have a "love" themed team instead of a Water team (because "Don Juan" and all 😂) It could be a double battle, where Luvdisc would do better, and run underused Pokemon like Delcatty and Volbeat/Illumise. Maybe he could have one mon use moves like Fake Out, Sweet Kiss, Attract, Assist, Encore, Taunt, Wish, etc., while the other sets up with moves like Dragon Dance, Substitute, or Tail Glow. Luvdisc could even run Double Team to be extra annoying (but not too annoying, since it's weak to 100% accurate Shock Wave). Heck, he could even use Jynx! Just my 2 cents, keep up the awesome work! 😊
@@shadowdragonlord2295 The secret bases idea seems really cool! I'm not sure about adding more Wallace scenes though, I think just making him more of a jerk in the scenes he's in would do the trick. If the community doesn't like him, maybe leaning into that wouldn't be such a bad idea 😅 Also, maybe the E4 could be temporarily closed after beating Wallace, and reopen after beating Steven - with him as Champion 🤯 Just spit balling here - and again, that secret bases idea seems 🔥af! 😊
The issue with Salamence is that you can technically go back and catch Rayquaza in Emerald before you even get access to Bagon. So you'd get the same Pokémon, but better in every way, without any investment needed. In Ruby and Sapphire, there's a stronger case to use it. But simply because you get access to Rayquaza so early in Emerald, and it does everything Salamence does but better, Salamence is immediately outclassed in that game. The only reason to get it would be because you simply don't want a legendary.
plus Rayquaza is easily available so even if you went to the cave to catch Bagon, you would ultimately get bored of levelling it up and catch Rayquaza instead
@@derik4126 This is actually an underrated reason. Salamence is, along with Swampert, probably one of the lowest-maintenance Battle Frontier quality opkemon you can pick up in the course of normal gameplay without worrying about wasting TMs.
The case to use it in ruby or sapphire is even stronger, when you use zigzagoons during your playthrough to collect rare candies via pickup, which isnt possible in emerald (with low-level zigzagoons at least). 15 rare candies (easily doable) plus a lv35 bagon gets you a salamence without grinding. in emerald you might as well breed yourself a dragon dance-bagon, ev-train it and use it for the frontier. anyway using rayquaza is just boring
Do people just not get taught listening comprehension anymore? He literally explains why it is Swampert before unveiling it. Wtf dude? Are you made of Tungsten? Because I am beholden to the immensity of your density.
Linoone: - Available on route 1/2/3 - Pick Up ability makes the early game incredibly easy because of the increased cashflow. - Decent Stats - Early Access to strong STAB (headbutt) - Late Game Belly Drum Strats make up for the lack of BST. - Medium Fast Exp Curve - It's a linoone.
@@Sirfoxx Same Type Attack Bonus. If you use an attack that has the same type as the pokemon using it you get 150% dmg. Means 80 dmg headbutt turns into 120 dmg on a normal type like linoone.
May be a niche pick but underrated in the right setting: Golduck I did a sun-team playthrough a few years back and had the conundrum of how I would use a water type on a sun team...until I remembered Golduck can have the cloud nine ability. It's water attacks wouldn't be reduced by sunlight, but the weather would stay up. Need to take out a fire type that's also using the sun? Swap in Golduck to make opponent's fire moves lose the boost, water moves do typical damage, then swap to my blaziken and it could still take advantage of the sun for blaze kicks. Such a fun puzzle I had to figure out! (For anyone curious, my full team was Blaziken, Shiftry, Camerupt, Bellossom, Golduck, and Castform/Groudon) Castform performed well as a sun setter/weather ball, but ultimately switched to groundon since I didn't have to waste a turn to set up the sun.
Yeah, Goodluck is probably the best water type for sun teams unless you count Solar Beam ludicolo😅 Although other than that it's stats are pretty underwhelming.
One little trick for Shedinja: When Nincada evolves into Shedinja, it gets all the moves Ninjask would get and at LV 25 Ninjask gets Swords Dance. So don't evolve nicada at LV 20, evolve it at LV 25.
this is only correct in gen 3 though. Gen 4 forward Shed's movepool and stats make it a special attacker, and it gets quiver dance to handle statboosting.
@@F14thunderhawk Absolutely not. Shedinja has a 90 base Atk, and a 30 base SpA. Using it specially in DP+ would be braindead. As for moves: it quite literally has a bigger Physical movepool than a Special one. Not entirely sure where you got your information, but none of it is correct. It's almost impressive.
@@TheRealLabryinth996 true war of attrition tho. Since sableye does 0 damage, just make sure you can get the job done with nightshade. Immunity is nice but i will be at watson while you finish up brawly😆
Crobat is a really strong Pokemon that can evolve really early at around level 27 I believe, if you give it the Soothe bell in slateport which is the next city you go to after getting a Zubat. Never underestimate the Soothe Bell. Especially if you love normal type pokemon as they can run Return which is one the strongest normal type moves without a drawback.
I think Camerupt is the most underrated pokemon in emerald because of it's 4x water weakness people don't want to use it, but it is one of the only mons that learns both rock slide and earthquake by level up. Both relatively low at 33 and 37 and you can give it the overheat tm from flannery. And just those 3 moves is enough to make it do a good to great job versus every mon that isn't water.
Swords Dance Absol is pretty ridiculous. Ariel Ace and Shadow Ball have great coverage for this game specifically. Lack of STAB hurts, but 130 base attack + swords dance makes up for it
Ghost and Dark are literally the same offensive-wise as they both hit Psychic and Ghost for super effective damage. The only difference between the two is that Ghost attack can't hit normal types. So no, its NOT great ''coverage''. Both do the same exact thing, however dark is special, which is bad on Absol.Don't give it a dark type move.
I feel like the main difference between those who love or hate skaking is if you play on shift or set. If you play on shift, then you can bring it in, 1-shot something with hyperbeam, and get switched out for free when it asks if you want to change pokemon. If you're stuck dealing with truant turns, you'll hate it.
@@EggscellentTree Vigeroth is probably better than Slaking in most situations thanks to some nasty set-up moves in Bulk Up, Encore and Yawn. Yes, Slaking can use all of these moves too, but Truant makes them completely unviable.
@@seankrolyk5814 There is nothing wrong with preferring set mode for the slight challenge, but I don't agree with you. Shift mode is the default mode for a singleplayer pokemon adventure. It's not like emerald is all that difficult even in set so like what are you proving🤷♂
@@beaky8138 Slaking underrated, you have to deal with a problem pokemon , use slaking and click hyperbeam , it's a nice nuke button. He just plays a different game than vigoroth and is more immediatly threatening , i tend to play these games underleveled as I don't like grinding so vigoroth for me might not have sufficient bulk to pull this stuff out.
Pickup Linoone is SO GOOD. I myself think it's very underrated. It gets you several good items passively, plus it's pure normal type, which gets it neutral stab damage against most enemies in the game except for Roxanne and Wynona's Skarmory (that is out of memory, but maybe there's a couple more) and it also gets access to Belly Drum and a ton of HMs and TMs. Linoone is another early game Pokemon that alongside Swellow can be very useful in a playthrough, even outside of battling because of pickup. 10/10 would recommend.
People saying Ludicolo forget you can't evolve Lombre until the game is almost over, so it's terrible for a playthrough. Also Salamence is bad for the same reason, you can only use it for the e4, and you don't need it
Crobat is really good as a partner for Swampert. It 4x resists swampert's one weakness, and sludge bomb is still physical in this game. It's surprisingly bulky and outspeeds everything
The most underrated pokemon in Generation 3 is Claydol. While it's weak to Water, it's coverage wall with 2 immunities that you can get the moment you get to the desert, has a painfully average learnset via Level up, but a godly TM learnset. It gets Screens, Ice Beam, Shadow Ball, Earthquake, Psychic, and in the late game it has Cosmic Power. It's able to power through with sheer coverage, bulk, and having high powered moves to make us for it's 70ish attacking stats. It's however outclassed because you can get Raltz and Abra much sooner, and so it makes having another Psychic type redundant. To be underrated is to have a gap between the common perception, and the reality, and I feel Claydol perfectly embodies this. It's not incredible, it has great strengths and large weaknesses, but it certainly doesn't deserve to wallow in obscurity. While other underrated Pokemon are at least on people's radar, NOBODY seems to remember this big chunky boy. If I do an Underrated Pokemon run of Gen 3, Claydol is my Psychic type, hands down.
Steven Stone from Ruby/Saphire prove Claydoll's effectiveness, especially his Post-Game fight in Mt.Meteor with a freaking level 75 Claydoll....There is a reason why in his previous Emerald video: People remember Steven Stone as champion. That thing swept my teams more times than I could count growing up. So people might be repressing it from childhood PTSD...that and.....Metagross....Oh God....The pain.
Funny thing about Shedinja, is that wild Kyogre can't hit it at all, so after you weaken it, you can easily walk it with a brand new Shedinja and have like 20-30 turns to try to catch it.
Bellossom is really underated imo ; not really because of her stats, but mainly for her design (that I love btw). I went out of my way when I was younger to add her to my team and was so happy to use her, just for the joy of seen her dance and destroy the few fights a grass type is good after the 5/6 gym
@@lazerbeam134 While in general Vileplume is definitly the better Pokemon, in Emerald Bellossom is by far the superior choice. Mainly only because you can get Bellossom way earlier than Vileplume. As soon as you get to Meteor falls you can use thief on a Solrock to get a Sunstone to evolve Gloom, You can then straight away use a Heart Scale to teach Bellossom Magical Leaf for a good offensive grass attack. Compare this with Vileplume, which you can't get untill you get Surf, which is 2 badges later. Until then Gloom is stuck with Absorb or Bullet Seed as its main attacking moves and will have to use the GIga Drain TM for a better option after it evolves into Vileplume. The added Poison typing also is just not that desirable in Emerald, being weak to psychic is horrible for Tate and Liza, and not resisting ground is also a big downside. Imo Bellosom is probably 2. best Grass type in the game, with Breloom being by far the best Grass type.
My underrated pick would be Dusclops - It doesn't take a lot of investment to evolve Duskull, can level up with less EXP, and customize it's moveset to be whatever you want (mixed coverage, status annoyer, tank) it's part of the fast exp group, so it needs less exp to gain levels than most, which helps with it's more defensive playstyle! Ghost is helpful in this gen as many pokemon movesets still rely on normal moves for coverage. Gets good access to various TMs, and is bulky enough to tank tons of hits and deal reliable damage back, especially in Tate + Liza's gym.
Easily the best. Tanky staller type with good sp attack, with very little weaknesses. Blaziken is just a better sweeper then Breloom due to having 2 types and the movepool to back them up.
Azumarill is extremely underrated (if you don't take Mudkip as a starter) as a water type because its super early (Marill) and it gets huge power. And even if you don't want to use it late game, it can become your hm friend.
@@dvillines26 Based. Azu in Oras helps with so many bosses. Brawly, Flannery, Norman, Winona cause fairy type for Altaria, TL, Maxie AND Archie, Wallace, Wally’s Gallade, Sydney, Glacia, Drake, and decent for Steven.
If I had to choose two underrated mons they would probably be Whiscash and Heracross. Whiscash is "budget Swampert" but at least gets access to EQ without the TM which is nice. Sometimes I like running it when I overuse swampert! Heracross comes late but is ready to go as soon as you get it! Gets Brick Break naturally, can teach it bulk up for setup and strength for HM coverage. Can also use the Guts/Facade strat like Swellow (although not as reliable to move first). And you get him after the flying gym so no need to worry about misplaced investment :)
I like Swalot's design too, but unfortunately It's just kind of... ok on arrival, and then utter dead weight by the end of the game. There isn't really any fight Swalot excels in, and that's why it's not good. It's cursed with being mono poison type. Unfortunately Poison is just objectively a really, really bad type and it's only usually notable as a secondary type to provide resistance synergy (e.g. grass poison or water poison, poison covers some weakness of grass or water in those type combos). But just mono poison is bad. The ONLY type you hit super effectively is grass, and being super effective against grass isn't really a major selling point because hitting grass types super effective isn't particularly difficult (take your pick of Fire, flying or ice moves. I would say bug as well but bug types in gen 3 are just LOL). For weakness you have ground and psychic, both are REALLY bad types to be weak to if the selling point of your pokemon is supposed to be bulk. Looking at the upsides: access to base 65 sludge at level 13 is really good, and you get body slam at level 26, but unfortunately its offense never really gets better than that. And while these are high base power moves, it's base attack stat leaves a bit to be desired. Again, its passable for the early stages, but once you get to Norman it really starts dropping off, and in fact accidentally poisoning or paralyzing normans pokemon with your attacks might work against you when he uses facade. Sure you get sludge bomb at level 48, but by that late stage Swalots lack of Base stats is really starting to catch up with it, and again it never really excels in any major fight, it either just kinda does ok, or it has nothing to contribute. It does also have a really good suite of support moves with Yawn and Encore, however since Swalot is slow, its not as good at using encore as you would like it to be (better to be fast and use it when you know you can lock opponents into something useless). Swalot has a lot of HP and a passable bulky gamestyle, but again it's hurt in this respect by being mono-typing, and also the fact that the way it recovers HP requires 2 move-slots to accomplish (stockpile + Swallow) to accomplish what other pokemon can do in 1 move (recover) so again, it's not ideal. TL:DR - Swalot makes a passable support pokemon for a team, but that's kinda all it's doing, and for that reason it's just "ok".
I really like Seviper as an underrated pokemon. 100 Attack and Special Attack makes it a great mixed attacker with Crunch, Sludge Bomb, Flamethrower, Giga Drain & Earthquake.
I think it's just the stats make it hard to use. Especially since most people play pokemon by sweeping, and any other strategy is just holding them back in an in-game playthrough
The problem is that Banette is there with base 115 atk STAB shadow ball and hyper beam, plus will-o-wisp for steel types and thunderbolt for Gyarados. As far as Ghost types go, I think Banette takes the top spot. It's pretty easy to get a Spell Tag as well since wild Shuppets are easy to find (tip: Compoundeyes Nincada with Smoke Ball makes it easy to farm these held items).
I agree, I used it and it helped a lot with psychic gym as an additional DMG if the swampert didn't finish off with surf and in the first 3 E4 through Brick break This is not a Pokemon that is supposed to be the main source of damage, but it works well against weakened opponents
I think Zigzagoon is quite underrated. It's used for pickup, and an hm mule, but gets good stab options, evolves early, and is fast while having access to belly drum to be a fast sweeper.
Legit. I just had a playthrough and Belly Drum Return Linoone just swept Sidney & Wallace. The other three to Defense Curl Rollout Huge Power Azumarill.
@@proborderlandsgamer the only annoyance is that you kinda have to give it rock smash until it gets HJK, but after that, it's really unstoppable. Maybe not a top 10 pick, even if it was in the game, but still definitely worth it a shoutout like Zangoose
Fun fact Linoone can actually sweep the entire elite four. Belly drum, return, shadow ball for ghosts (benefit of the dumb decision of ghost being physical), and ice beam I think? Equipped with a sitrus or lum berry each time. Exploits the fact the whole elite four has a lead that’s either really weak or likes to waste the first turn with protect or hail
Most underrated I think is Vileplume. It is basically a weaker Venusaur but a good alternative since that one isn't in the game. Odish are commonplace so in Nuzlockes you're probably gonna find one. Bulk combined with sleep powder can save you in tricky situations. If you're willing to keep it a Gloom until 35 you get moonlight. A good recovery moves for those who don't use items. Then upon evolution the fun starts. Give it sunny day and solar beam by TM and you become unstoppable. Moonlight heals 66% in the sun, chlorophile brings your low 50 speed to a good 100. Solar beam hits 120 stab with a respectable 85 special attack. A Vileplume in the sun really has no drawbacks. All you need is a mon to setup on. But with that bulk and healing it's not hard to find. It does ask for commitment since you will be using your sun stone, sunny say and solar beam TMs on a gloom. But to me it paid off big. MVP of Emerald Nuzlocke.
I feel Exploud is very underrated. You get Whismur very early, and while it doesn’t help that much early on, Exploud’s learnset is pretty good. You get STAB Hyper Beam as soon as it evolves, and its TM choices are fantastic. Water Pulse, Earthquake, Solarbeam, Fire Blast, Shadow Ball, Brick Break, Ice Beam, you name it. And its offenses are pretty balances and decently strong, so you could easily make a mixed attacking monster
I would argue Ludicolo is *MUCH* better in gen 3, purely due to the fact that the phys/spec split wasn't a thing back then. Breloom would always be locked into a moveset of Spore/Brick Break/Body Slam/Sludge Bomb which only hits 6 types for x2 Ludicolo on the other hand, is a special attacker, and has much better coverage; Ice Beam/Surf/Fire Punch/Thunder Punch/Giga Drain which, when configured to hit the most types for 2x, it comes out to 10 types, with the moveset Fire Punch/Ice Beam/Giga Drain/Surf which makes use of both of Ludicolo's STAB types (Breloom only makes use of Fightning), not to mention Ludicolo is much bulkier than Breloom, and can easily outspeed almost anything if you also have Rain active. Oh, and Breloom also takes takes to level up due to being in the 1.64m EXP category. The only downside to Ludicolo is the fact that you get it so late (at the earliest, you get it after the 6th badge), meaning you can't really use it properly in a story playthrough. But at the same time, Shroomish is also complete ass until it evolves at level 54 (if you want Spore, which is a key move), which also takes ages (if not even longer than getting a Water Stone).
Shoutout to Smeargle for being available in the wild in Emerald, while it's a postgame pick it's ability to pick up any move at all and use it makes it a wonderful treat when facing off with your friends.
I think vigoroth needs more credit than it received. Especially if you don't use items in battle. Access to bulk up, boost its normal type moves with silk scarf, and access to early in battle healing via Slack Off, plus STAB return/slash/facade. You can easily set it up and sweep a lot of the early to mid game before you get slaking. Especially when properly doing damage calcs to make sure you heal optimally with slack off while setting up bulk ups. Also for breloom, early breloom not always great because you miss spore by not waiting to evolve shroomish till later and spore is so broken.
Spore is insane, but there's 0 chance I'm leveling up any mon to level 54, let alone a not fully evolved mon. And that's when Shroomish gets spore. It hurts to leave that potential on the table, but it's just far too impractical for a playthrough imo.
@@Muistimetalli depends how you play. If your play style is more "build a single team to run the game and end at the E4", yeah bad idea to wait for breloom. If your play style is, "let's build the perfect team for every single fight, use every possible encounter and strategy available to you", especially if you plan to do any of the post game stuff its well worth it. Also if you play with level caps and rare candies because grinding is cringe and strategy tends to be more enjoyable, waiting for breloom not bad at all.
the way Vigoroth was written off also frustrates me. you absolutely can take it to the League and have it put in work. granted it's better in generations where the Eviolite exists. Eviolite Vigoroth is hilarious.
I've been using Glalie on my team during my current (first) playthrough. If you can be bothered to get it to Lv. 42 before Tate & Liza, then you have a solid Ice Beam and Crunch attacker for that gym. I also found it useful against Sidney, Phoebe and Drake.
It took me a while to think of this - as I discovered it only just last night. Honestly a lot of Pokemon in Gen 3 get some good abilities and hidden abilities in later generations. I am not sure if that should count though, but I will add my favorite change that I did get to experience in a Rom-Hack already: That just...pushed this particularly good and difficult Gym Leader over the edge: Torkoal - Drought. This abomination sends Overheat Torkoal to new levels, as it makes the fight so much more dangerous - yet not overwhelming. Rather than relying on Sunny Day from Slugma or the previous setup, Flannery just gets to cast out Torkoal without fear of Water Pokemon. With Rock and Ground moves as its main weaknesses then, it stands strong against most attacks while it shoots out overheat after overheat to deal with their relatively low Special Defense types. The problem? It's High Defense Stat. Torkoal is a good physical wall if you did not bring Mudkip line with you; thankfully we don't need to go even more overboard with him. It's terrible speed stat is mainly why despite all of these factors later Pokemon are capable of setting up Rain Dance with the plethora of water types - and Drizzle Pelliper - that Torkoal doesn't get to shine much beyond Flannery. It is in the right position to be as big of a threat and show off its full potential right then and there, but swiftly drops off. Since I don't think many teams focus on weather conditions afterward though; for a normal playthrough it is still a decent choice. I personally love Torkoal and thus will always take a chance to defend him. His Water Counterpart is also interesting: Relicanth. It's main problem is availability - but with its ability of Rock Head and the capability to use Head Smash for stab later on to make the most out of it and it's 90 atk stat. And Sandstorm especially helps it when that move got its buff. Problem? These are again post-gen 3 effects and moves...So in Gen 3 what CAN this thing do? Rockslide, Ancientpower, Yawn, Swift Swim - Rain Dance to help bolster it's speed capable of turning a 229 max speed to 468 in the rain - Amnesia - Double Edge if you keep Rock Head - Hyper Beam still being physical - Return/Frustration - Body Slam - Earthquake - Rest - Sleep Talk: that is about it I think. Much like Torkoal it requires some form of weather team or setup to make it be able to be the strong living ancient wall: but it has some useful tricks up its sleeves; despite the 4x to Grass. Which thank goodness is NOT very common in the base game. Especially since before the Physical and Special split: as Grass is permanently Special. This does mean its own Water-type Stab moves are a bit...redundant. Still, if given the time and energy to make it useful and you can get a Drizzel Rain Dance up: Relicanth just could very well be a super secret sweeper you throw in to start physically taking everything down in front of it. It is useful against Juan -Wallace - Glacia - and even Salamance if it can outspeed it and get Rock Slide off. All in all I think these are just two highly underrated Pokemon from Gen 3 that can still make great use of their niches and weather effects, that the games want to deploy. I do not know if adding the changes to Sandstorm would be too much of a change to make the game feel less like Emerald: but that would simply be the strongest boost for a defensive Relicanth (and many other Rock Types that get shunted from all the water) I am not sure what changes could be made for them to shine while not overwhelming or changing the feel of Emerald: but I do enjoy them in the games none-the-less. (Also despite loving the tortoise, am I the only one who kept thinking Torkoal was Fire/Rock for some unknown reason when a teen playing this game? That misconception has stuck with me even up to now, I keep thinking it is FOR SOME REASON fire/rock...Would help give it some extra surprise bulk if it was in the sandstorms at least XD. )
Torkoal is quite underrated. It gets good moves early, like Curse and Body Slam, along with Flamethrower at a reasonable point, along with Amnesia and Iron Defense. It's actually decent in Emerald, though admittedly it suffers in the late game.
I believe that Ludicolo is a really underrated pokémon, being a water grass type in Hoenn is eeally good, bein able to find a lotad as early as route 102 (yes, only having astonish and no good stab moves by level up may not look good first, but, read it out), you can easily take bullet seed tm by the guy after the florest and slap that tm with it, having a easy fitgh against roxane (being Water and Grass Type), early evolution (lvl 14), having access to other great tms, such as: Surf, Ice Bean, Mega Drain, Rain Dance (to make use of it's ability and combo with surf), Elemental Punchs via Tm Tutor. Does not have any pros or cons against broly, then he can fitgh Wallace well, as he takes neutral eletric types attacks because of it's grass type, can fitgh Flannerry, it can learn protect to win over Norman, have a first bad matchup over flying gym, Tate and Liza have good coverage against rock type pokemon, is good against evil teams, is okay into the 8 gym, remember, giga drain and ice beam, is okay in the dark elite 4, is good against ice elite 4 because of it's water pokemon, is neutral against ghost elite 4, ice beam through drake and is solid against Wallece. Yes, it's reliant over TMs and HMs, but overall, solid to good pokémon, one bad factor is the Water stone, wich is rare in Emerald. This concludes the long explanation of why Ludicolo is the Goat in Emerald. Any mistake in grammar, please sorry, as I'm not from any English speaking nation.
I was even a little surprised to not see it even mentioned, but I understand that the over reliance in the TMs and HMs is a big factor in not choosing him, even if as an honorable mention. I forgot to say it in my previous text, but great video as always, waiting eagerly for the RomHack, as Hoenn is one of my favorites region, and the first one i Won the League when I was a child.
Ludicolo definitly isn't bad, however it has some really large problems 1. For 90% of the game you are not using Ludicolo, you can't get access to a Water Stone before after you get Dive, which means after you beat Tate and Liza. That is increadibly late to still having to use a mediocre middle stage evo. 2. Its movepool before you get Surf (after beating Norman) is horrible, No water moves on level up and Absorb is the only grass move you get. You can teach it Bullet Seed from TM, however that isn't very good either (average 30-40 power). Its only saving grace is that if you spend a lot of money or time at the Game Corner you can buy the Ice Beam tm there early. Its not stab, Wattson's Magneton still resists all you moves and you still don't have a water move for Flannery, but its at least better than Bullet Seed. Also some corrections, the Elemental Punches are all post game only, and Lombre does not learn Protect on level up, so that isn't an opton against Norman
@@thohillesland yeah lombre is good up until you can't evolve until the 7th gym. It isn't even good against Watson since your starters could already do the job for you. By the time you get to flannery you already have access to a graveler or nummel that knows magnitude. And after that it wouldn't be doing shit to the next 4 gyms.
@@madaratobi321 1. Wattson can be extremely difficult if you are not using one of the handfull of pokemon you can get at that point that is good into Wattson's Magneton. These pokemon are Marshtomp, Breloom, Hariyama, Geodude, Combusken, Vigoroth, Alakazam, and Shedinja in that order for how good they are. So if you pick Treecko (or not using a starter) and not using any of these pokemon listed, you will have a really hard time with Wattson. 2. Lombre honestly isn't good into either Wattson or Flannery at all. For Wattson it doesn't have any of the good traits that other grass types have like the good status moves or even the resistance to electric. And for Flannery it doesn't resist fire and doesn't even get any water moves or any super effective moves at all. Honestly, the only gyms where the Lotad line is actually good is against the 1. and the 8. gym. All the others its either average, or just straight bad.
Smith, do we wanna talk about that thunder wave into toxic play on Manectric? @16:10 Also Alakazam may be #1 but Breloom will always be #1 in my heart. He's shaped like a friend and no one will convince me otherwise.
For me, the most underrated Pokemon - and probably for good reason - is Sableye. I remember using it on a playthrough of Sapphire before Emerald ever released. I'm not going to list all the reasons people should use it, because I'm sure there's not a lot to work with and a perfect counter to anything you could point out. Also, it's probably all nostalgia, as I don't know if I'd use it again. I just remember really enjoying using it and using it again when Emerald came out. I also recall always wanting to make Mawile work, but even as a kid that was willing to endure many headaches to make my favorites work, it didn't seem worth it haha.
One pokemon that definitely gets underrated is Lanturn. It’s a bit of a late pickup, only available after the 7th gym, but water/electric is a fantastic typing for the late game, bodies 8th gym, glacia, and a good portion of Wallace, and with decent bulk, confuse ray and paralysis it can provide decent value in the other fights as well. I wouldn’t say it makes top 10 due to availability but was very surprised it didn’t make the honorable mentions list as a late game pickup.
The fact that Sableye doesn't have ANY weakness before Fairy type was introduced was just wild. I mean yeah stat wise it's not the strongest, but for sure you can use it with some disgusting tactics to beat enemies as they become more and more depressed.
It's the best defensive mon in gen 3 for sure, because on top of 0 super-effective moves against it, you can egg train it to learn Recover. Open with confuse ray to truly depress your opponent. Plus STAB with faint attack and shadow ball is great for the twins and Agatha.
To be fair, if Smith gives held items to gym leaders' pokemon, like leftovers or choice band, it would at least be an option to use. So maybe he's planning on something like that.
Most underrated pokemon: I’d have to say my most underrated pokemon is SCEPTILE! I know you’ve spent a lot of time over your discussions talking about him but I used him for Sapphire and he was the MVP. I actually bred the treeko in game to have Crunch on him which really helped his game. Moveset: Leaf blade, Crunch, Dragon Claw, Earthquake. Have followed your series since crystal legacy and as Emerald is my favourite game that I completed a living Dex on, I would love a copy of Emerald Legacy! Loving your work on this!
Wingull/Pelipper is underrated. It is available super early, and even though it falls off later on as more powerful picks become available, it still does work.
I feel like Armaldo is usually slept on when it comes to peoples teams and discussions of Ruby Sapphire and Emerald. Its has fairly high physical attack, is fairly bulky, and has an ability which means it doesnt have to worry about crits. Plus it looks like a dorky dinosaur thing, which is also fun.
@@Vanessa_exe That's just cuz cradily gets a piss poor moveset. I used armaldo once in the e4, but I found it didn't contribute much besides sponging damage. I suppose it could be good for T&L. It does seem decent, but It doesn't get a lot in terms of moves either. You can slap eq on it, AP can boost, and brick break and aerial ace could be useful. It is kinda bogged down by the matchups late game.
@@ApocolipticMonkey right but ignoring movesets I can guarantee nobody picked the root fossil For those that didn't pick treecko, your given seedot, lotad, shroomish, oddish, Roselia and even cacnea before the *Root* fossil The claws more appealing and sounds cooler. Anorith has always been the more popular pick of the two, it may not make final teams because you probably have camerupt, gyrados, breloom, swallow, manectric, larion, your starter, sandslash, kirlia, Kadabra, linoone or perhaps a hariyama with you. But I would never call it slept on
One of the most underrated Pokemon?: Walrein. Yes It's a late pickup, and does sadly clash with Swampert. But if you dont choose Swampert for your run, I implore anyone to give it a try. Good bulk, Thick Fat to give it back that Fire Resist, they are picked up with Encore in their utility kit already, Body Slam, Ice Beam (TM), Surf, and Rest are all solid for its setup. Takes a bit of training, but will wall Lunatone and Solrock while also taking out Claydol and Xatu. It helps resist most of Juan's team, dealing neutral Body Slams back, then helps with 2 of Sidney's Pokemon, matches evenly with Phoebe, dead matches against Glacia, then walls Drake's team, and finally it holds for Wallace. I think the other one is a Pokemon whose investment is an extremely difficult one, but if you enjoy dedicating to walls, Cradily is quite bulky with the moveset to absolutely never die. Amnesia, Double Team, Confuse Ray, Ingrain, Toxic, Giga Drain, and Protect are all very viable options for its moveset. And if you take the time to hatch one brand new, you can breed one with a level 37 Corsola to get Recover and Mirror Coat onto it for Fast recovery and immediate revenge shots, with its already decent 107 Special Defense.
@@MrJJLand Walrein is really great but... Honestly judging by how late it is and the vast amount of water types in the game that can easily replace it. Namely Gyarados. I would put it at a B-tier(I love Walrein and Spheal, they're one of the first plushies I bought)
Marill is an underrated mule. Everyone talks about Zigzagoon, but marill learns Dive, Rock Smash, Strength, and waterfall/surf (depending on what you don't want on your main water type) while being available before the 3rd gym.
@@beaky8138 I never considered Marill. I would take Zigzagoon, catch Tropius later on and eventually replace Zigzagoon with Wailmer for full HM coverage.
I think exploud is underrated because its damage output and coverage is actually crazy good in the mid game. Whismur is available for all the important gym fights, and can free up a team slot for its access to high damage surfs
@@TonyaGreenBane Bad stats, evolve a bit late at lvl 40. I agree that it has really good type coverage in TMs but I would rather use a Vigoroth than a Exploud.
My pick for underrated Pokemon for an Emerald playthrough is Seviper! It's not the fastest but you get it after the 3rd gym and with 100 in both offensive stats you can basically slap whatever move you want and it's always going to hit decently hard - and it's mixed stats are complimented well by Seviper's excellent starting moves (typically bite, poison tail, screech, and glare) and later it's bevvy of TM Moves (Flamethrower, Giga Drain, Earthquake, Iron Tail, Dig, Sludge Bomb, like seriously why can it learn so many moves) I'll add Roselia here for gen 3 Pokemon that don't appear natively in Emerald. It doesn't hit the peaks of Sceptile damage or speed, and people often disregard it because they know it has an evolution in future games that compels them to feel retroactively that Roselia is "incomplete", but at the end of the day, 100 spatk is pretty solid, and it gets better moves than Grovyle does, at least earlier on (Mega Drain and Magical Leaf). I cannot tell you how much I love gen 3. Emerald is not my number 1 game, but it's up there with my top 5, and out of every game in the world, if I had to be stuck playing only 1 game forever, Emerald would probably be the pick. I'm very excited for Legacy.
Seviper suffers from being mono poison type unfortunately, and also the fact that without tms its movepool isn't great. Base 50 poison is the best it learns on level up, and you're unfortunately praying poison tail crits to get that value. Otherwise it's weaker than even crunch! Having Crunch as innate coverage for Psychic type seems kinda nice at first, the unfortunate problem is that Seviper is being outsped by every psychic type come late game so it's not practical, it's losing those fights regardless (it's even outsped by Lunatone and Solrock!). The upsides however is that it gets access to a surprising number of good TM moves, like it's capable of learning Iron Tail, Earthquake and Flamethrower, and it can learn sludge bomb to get a high base power poison move for later. However using a same type tm just to get a decently powered STAB move later feels really bad, and you only get one copy of iron tail and earthquake and I wouldn't be able to help but feel that they're wasted on Seviper - however absolutely grind coins for flamethrower, because being able to hit both Skarmory and Magneton hard is never going to be bad, and Hoenn has a distinct lack of good fire type pokemon (Blaziken is the best but you miss out on swampert, and the others are just kinda mediocre). It also learns Glare, and while Glare isn't anywhere near as good and consistent in gen 3 as it becomes later, it is the most consistent paralysis option for paralyzing electric types if thats what you want, and I think Seviper is the only pokemon native to hoenn who can learn it, so it gets bonus points for that too. For me, my personal pick for underrated pokemon in RSE is Dodrio. I feel like because Swellow Guts Facade exists Dodrio gets kinda forgotten about, and also because its not a newer pokemon, but Dodrio has similar levels of power and speed to swellow, its got more power without considering status and is slightly slower, however in return it learns both Tri Attack and Drill Peck on Level up. It gets tri attack on arrival (high 80 base power with chance for multiple different status effects, generally solid), and while it gets drill peck late, you can use fly for a bit till you learn it then have drill peck for the late game. Drill peck is THE BEST flying type move available in emerald. I just really like how Dodrio is a solid pokemon that holds its own in it's own right without needing to rely on weird intentional self status strats, without needing tm's to beef it up, and since it can use fly you don't need a HM slave for fly. It's very low investment and you get something decently powerful and fast.
Hear me out- Grumpig goes pretty hard in Emerald. 90 SpA, 110 SpD and 80 Spe are nothing to scoff at in Gen III and 32 is a reasonable enough level to evolve. You mentioned Thick Fat, and Grumpig gets it, giving it two bonus resistances! Psychic at level 37 is not bad and if you have the patience to defer Spoink's evolution a mere 2 levels to level 34, you'll get early Psychic! Its biggest weakness is that you have to rely on move tutors for any coverage whatsoever, but for a mid-game Psychic-blasting menace it's actually surprisingly competent at pulling that off!
You can pick up a Psychic TM in the Mauvile game corner for 70k if you want to give it Psychic right away. With Thick Fat, it becomes very strong into Flannery and keeps up the momentum through the rest of the mid and late game.
@@theamazingspooderman2697 I ran one in a nuzlocke and I ended up with a confuse ray/shock wave/ taunt/ psychic, moveset. It did really well, taunt + confuse ray let it have good control. I can also see rest being great with taunt/rest to give you a lot of durability, taunt into a mon you know you can tank and rest up.
I'm replaying Emerald now and I think the most underrated Pokemon is Azumarill! You get Marill right before Roxanne. It isn't great into Brawly, but Ralts and Sableye can take care of him. If you can get Rollout going, Azumarill does surprisingly well vs Watson. It absolutely crushes Flannery and can learn Dig by TM for Norman. Rollout sweeps Winona and Surf allows it to crush Tate & Liza. While it doesn't have great coverage for the final gym and the elite four, water typing and high defense stats allow it to stay relevant. Just make sure to get one with huge power and a +attack nature!
I'd have to say a big underrated Pokémon in Emerald is the Wingull line. Most people scoff at Pelliper but it has decent stats and very surprising coverage, including being able to utilize Shock Wave for electric coverage.
Most underrated Pokémon in emerald is gorebyss. Very high special attack with hydro pump and psychic. If you can set up the rain, swift swim makes it a great sweeper. It’s also the most underrated shiny from any generation imo.
Hello, i would say Heracross is pretty underrated to use on RSE. yeah you get it as a rare encounter in safari zone after like the 6th gym but it's Heracross, all you need really is Brick Break and Megahorn to make it work
The problem with the safari zone pokemon is that none of them are new pokemon, and they come so late. No one wants to use a Donphan in gen 3 when they can use Flygon. Or use Xatu when they can use Gardevoir, for example. Don't get me wrong. They're good, and some people will use them if they are their favorite. But that new gen bias means Heracross is in competition with other gen 3 fighting types, so it rarely gets considered.
I feel like Wingull always makes it onto an early team and that makes it underappreciated. If you're not on Mudkip you don't have a lot to work with and this always felt like the pick.
I agree, Pelipper is very good in RS and probably slightly better in Emerald. It's probably the second-best Water-type after Mudkip. You can condense your Surf and Fly usage onto one Pokemon although it does not learn the other water HMs which is slightly disappointing. It's strong into 4 out of the first 5 gyms (including Norman since it gets Protect by level). It's a good recipient for the Ice Beam and Shock Wave TMs which makes it strong into Winona and is good against the Psychic gym since 3/4 of their mons are weak to Water. With Shock Wave it's even good into Juan and can help it deal with Kingdra's Double Team spamming.
I'm gonna go with camerupt. Yes, it isn't that good for late game, but every time I don't pick blaziken, that thing never lets me down. Rock slide just in time for Winona, earthquake for Flannery, STAB earthquake without needing TM, eruption and rock slide for Glacia. If not for him I'd pick ludicolo. A lot of variety on the moveset, great support and covers two types at once. Also, look at their faces. They are just the silliest lil guys. I love'em
One underrated pokemon from gen 3 that I like is Swalot. You get him relatively early in the game, has good bulk, has decent defenses, can either wall with stockpile/swallow or protect , has stab sludge or sludge bomb or hits really good with normal moves like strength or body slam, can set up toxic or sleep through yawn, has enough coverage through TMs or the move tutor to either counter or check its weaknesses, and is pretty cute. I'm telling you, lotta people sleep on Swalot but he's pretty cool, only thing I see holding him back is his abysmal speed of 55.
This is the first video I'm watching in less than a minute of it's upload. The videos great btw. Can't wait to see the final product of Emerald Legacy. I know it's going to be great!
The underrated Pokémon in Emerald for me is Swalot.... Never had any feelings for it until a nuzlocke where I had no choice but to run it and I ended up loving that big purple blob!! Super bulky with access to amnesia, great status moves such as toxic and yawn and then huge STAB power with 90 power sludge bomb! Makes such a great staller and switch in. Then you can even teach it some great TMs such as ice beam, shadow ball, shockwave, sunny day and water pulse for great coverage! I will defend that purple blob to the end and always run one whenever I get the chance now!
@@bvd_vlvd It's such a great option for any rum, I love using it in Gale of Darkness too! I'm sure it'll make an appearance in one of my Emerald legacy playthroughs..
I've always really liked Exploud for Gen 3. Even without Hyper Voice (until 62, making it irrelevant to a playthrough) it's got more than enough tools to be fantastic.
I'm doing an Emerald playthrough with 2 of my friends right now and I can't say enough about how much Skarmory has kept me going! Emerald has always been my favorite, so to get a copy of your game would be awesome!
The most underrated pokemon in Emerald has to be Solrock. Its great into flannery, great into Norman with normal resistance, great into winona with walling earthquake altaria, and is probably the best user of the rollout move tutor. Falls off at the elite four but till then is a very reliable ally.
I'll never forgive them for giving us the worse psychic floating rock and Seviper over Zangoose in this game. Calm Mind Psychic Ice Beam Lunatone FTW!!
@@larryhunter6824For me it's: 1. Trainer's eyes 2. Champion Steven 3. Zangoose I also love the clunkier design of the whole game, Emerald feels too much like FRLG and not like Hoenn tbh. I might genuinely prefer R/S over Emerald lol
A super fast electric type that you can get in its evolved state: Electrode was a fun pokemon to use on my Emerald playthrough. And while Absol may not be perfectly viable, it is badass looking.
Imo, solrock is an under appreciated pokemon. Cuz you can find it at meteor falls after the 3rd gym. And rock, psychic is a good type combo because there are barely any bug and steel moves that are strong, and also not that many strong grass type pokemon. and it also has levitate so it’s immune of ground type of attacks. And it’s rock typing is good to resist normans powerful attacks from its slaking. On its offensive side stab rock throw with a good attack stat is pretty strong and is pretty good against flannery and Winona and most of team magma. But it’s psychic type is pretty useless since it can’t learn any strong psychic moves without using a tm and its special attack stat is 55 which is abysmal so it’s really there defensively. Problems with solrock is it falls off hard late game. With the eight gym and the elite four since it can’t keep up since it’s stats aren’t the best.So in conclusion, solrock shreds through mid game but falls off hard late game, which makes it a pokemon to consider adding to your team temporarily, but nobody really considers it at all which I think they should.
I can't say that it's underrated or overrated but i have HEAVY nostalgia for Walrein. I just remember it being a monster, taking hits and dishing them out like a boss.
Altaria is for sure underrated. Bulky AF, has access to recovery, and able to setup sweep if needed. You also get it very early, everything considered.
@@rjante2236 I gotta be honest, I forgot Roost was a gen 4 move lmao. But it get's Rest, which it utilizes very well due to its bulk and setup moves (against anything that doesn't have ice moves, naturally lol), being able to take another hit or two than most others that aren't 100% dedicated to being a tank
Most underrated: Starmie in the late game. Fast, great typing, great against Tate and Liza, does nice damage against Juan's Kingdra with Ice Beam, Tbolt coverage, and good matchups in the E4
I've seen videos on how girafarig learns enough good tms to solo the elite 4. So it's probably one of the more underrated Pokemon, especially given how much more common Alakazam and Gardevoir are
Girafarig's moveepool is absolutely insane, Psychic, Thunderbolt, Crunch, Calm Mind, Agility, Baton Pass, Earthquake, Shadow Ball and Return. Just Calm Mind and Baton Pass in itself is absurd, everything else is just icing on top.
I feel Weezing should be a honorable mention, sure its ''just'' a bulky poision type, but it is a really good TM hog. You can put all TM's you can't use on Weezing and have something Bulky. Wigglytuff it kinda in the same boat, but its doesn't really have great stats.
Weezing is fantastic and a little underappreciated. Bulky, hits decent and incredible move pool. Sludge bomb + thunderbolt + flamethrower were nice on it
The most underrated Pokémon in Emerald: Heracross. If you skip Fortree you can pick it up in the Safari Zone for minimal investment. You get to use it for essentially the entire second half of the game. Early level 23 Brick Break lets you use the TM elsewhere, you can use it as a Guts/Facade nuke similar to Swellow but with even higher attack and access to Bulk Up (and Swords Dance if you’re trading from FRLG). Lastly it gets great coverage in Earthquake and Megahorn (even though Megahorn is lvl 53, it’s still available for late game and as a Battle Frontier team member in lvl 100 mode). Heracross is great against all of the end game dark type evil team members and brings great value against Sydney/Glacia of the E4. Just an overall underrated member that provides really great mid-late game usage that seems forgotten about in this generation with other fighting types like Breloom/Hariyama/Blaziken.
Lairon and Claydol, both caught in sky pillar after the 8th gym are great quick swaps in for a team that has been running 4 main mons with two HM friends right before the league or have used some early game mons that drop off too much in the end game. They are good bulky switch ins for healing, have great access to coverage moves, and completely shut down various pokemon in the elite 4. They both are caught in the 40s. lairon evolves into aggron with pretty much a single level up so they both make great last minute replacements for peliper and linoone that require basically no investment. (aggron/lairon is also surprisingly good at walling rayquaza while you exhaust hoenn's entire ultra ball stockpile)
I think the Whismur line is pretty underrated for play through a of emerald. Available early in Rusturf Tunnel, gets a boosting move in Howl super early on at level 15, has good HP and is a decent threat whether you build physical with Return and Shadow Ball or special with things like Flamethrower or Ice Beam. I think they’re underrated mostly because you get them around the time you’ll be facing Roxanne (where a normal type does pretty minimal damage) or just before facing Brawly (where a normal type is a TERRIBLE thing to be), but also because of it’s low speed stat. I just think they have more than enough positives to warrant using them! Side note, I recently found my childhood DS lite and it still works now 18 years later; so I would absolutely love the opportunity to use it to play what I’m sure will be an AMAZING game in Emerald Legacy.
Nice Video! And Love your Romhacks! Gotta say Girafarig was a Pokemon I never really used in Gen3 but with Calm Mind, Crunch, Psycic and Thunderbolt ...this boy wrecked everything after gym 5
Volbeat is a really interesting support Pokémon that I honestly think gets overlooked a lot of the time. Light screen + Attract gives your frailer offensive Pokémon room to come in a lot of the time and it can even be a monster setting up with Tail Glow and Signal Beam. The secondary effect on Signal Beam can also make for some clutch moments. Super fun to run for some variety and definitely good in doubles with access to Helping Hand.
@@VitorSilva-tl6mo It's a bit too annoying for me to wait till lvl45 to use it (which is when it learns swords dance). Because until that point it's just eating xp with the xp share while contributing almost nothing.
@@Muistimetalli He stated on the video, "pokemon that you think are underrated" Not pokemon that are god level tier. Ninjask is very useless but I think it fills this niche of being one of the best pokemon for set up and help pokemons with low speed but high attack and no one talks about it so I feel it's underrated. Also learns swords dance at 25. U meant baton pass
Ninjask is highly underrated. Once it gets Baton Pass, you can turn anything into a sweeper. But before that, it gets Swords Dance at lvl 25 and gets you a Shedinja. Teach it Return and watch in awe as this locust starts one shotting. You can then teach it protect to guarantee the Speed Boost, and give it a Shell Bell to help keep it alive. But come 45, you can pass those +2 attack, +1 speed onto anything. Hell you just need to use Protect once and it outspeeds everything in the game. Gardevoir at +1 just outclassed Zam. +2 Swampert is now a sweeper. And its flying type gives it ample opportunities to switch in on someone trying to EQ your Magneton
I think manectric should be placed even higher. It can outspeed most pokemon and it's very high special attack combined with thunderbolt and thunder means it will destroy every flying and water type pokemon without taking any damage most of the time.
You forgot about Pelipper with Shockwave, Surf, Fly and Stockpile. Rams water types, flying types, grass types, bug types, fighting types, fire types, ground types, rock types, and can 1v1 steel types lacking rock moves due to 100 base defense and hitting their special defense. It gives ground-immunity, both of the priority HM utilities and is great in every weather zone. Neutrality to ice damage is also really good on a flying type, especially in the elite 4. A water type that checks other water types and bullies Ludicolo and Breloom in Hoenne is really nice. Just make sure to get a speed nature on this guy and give it the shockwave TM.
Weirdly, in my most recent playthrough of Emerald I tried using Hariyama and found it consistently lackluster. For the endgame my best Pokémon had to be Ludicolo and, surprisingly, Swalot. Swalot has some pretty good bulk options and access to all sorts of moves to sabotage the enemy. Encore, Toxic, and Yawn make for some hilarious ways to mess up enemies, and besides some annoying one off trainers with Psychic types it usually did pretty well. Granted, it struggled against Wallace, but that was largely user error.
Chinchou/Lanturn was on my Gen 2 team with Rain Dance, Surf, and Thunder. Final move was either Spark for regular encounters, or Confuse Ray just to be a troll.
Most underrated gotta be milotic. People complain about the process to get one but in reality it usually just takes just an hour or two of fishing then once you get one, probably about another hour or two from that point to evolve it. Get those berries above rustboro, go to lilycove, make some pokeblocks, ur done. Isn’t actually that bad
Cradily is definitely underrated in Emerald. You might have to give Lilieep the EXP Share for a bit, but it’s always served me well. Access to Recover via Egg Moves is also sick if you want to breed for it in your playthrough, or for the Battle Frontier later on.
Most underrated: I think you hit the nail on the head with Magneton being on the list. It has humble origins, but in the region with far too much water, it's a sweet mon to have on the team.
I personally like Hariyama more than Breloom because it’s bulkier and doesn’t risk getting one shot by Norman’s Slaking or by Glacia. And with the Thick Fat ability, Hariyama can resist Glacia, Team Magma’s fire types and Flannery making it more viable. But if you get one with Guts, no problem because you can run Guts+Facade on it too and it’ll hit harder than Swellow because of the higher attack stat that Hariyama has
My team when I played this as a kid might as well have been just Blaziken and Gardevoir, with the other four as mostly filler. Either element coverage or hm's.
Early wobbuffet is pretty underrated 190 base hp is insane right before the flannery fight and if you didnt grab an early water type it will help on that fight. Just a pain to train.
I think that Grumpig is a pretty underrated pokemon. It has great special bulk and a decent speed. It also isn’t a bad special attacker, although not the best, but it can learn fire punch, thunder punch, and ice punch through move tutor which are pretty good coverage moves that take advantage of its special attack stat in gen 3. It also learns quite a few helpful status moves such as Toxic, Light Screen, Reflect, Sunny Day, and Rain Dance which could definitely prove useful, especially in double battles. Edit: Also its Thick Fat ability makes it especially useful against Flannery and Glacia!
After a few recent playthroughs of emerald, i gotta say, my underrated pick would probably be ludicolo it has a rough move set that overall means it struggles to keep up while it's a lombre, but once you get surf and the ice beam tm at the same time, and you already have access to fake out it goes from struggle bus to the best member of the team. After evolution, it keeps up the momentum, too. Like fake out, surf, and ice beam are really all you need.

If the community doesn't like him, maybe leaning into that wouldn't be such a bad idea 😅
Also, maybe the E4 could be temporarily closed after beating Wallace, and reopen after beating Steven - with him as Champion 🤯
Just spit balling here - and again, that secret bases idea seems 🔥af! 😊
How could we forget shedinja or claydol
The strongest case for Salamence would be for you wanting to tackle the battle frontier right after, so you invest in it as early as possible
@@derik4126 This is actually an underrated reason. Salamence is, along with Swampert, probably one of the lowest-maintenance Battle Frontier quality opkemon you can pick up in the course of normal gameplay without worrying about wasting TMs.
Ratquaza is actually catchable before the 8th gym if you want to catch him right after the graudon and kyogre fight ends

May be a niche pick but underrated in the right setting: Golduck
I did a sun-team playthrough a few years back and had the conundrum of how I would use a water type on a sun team...until I remembered Golduck can have the cloud nine ability.

Spoken like a true gamer
I didn't even think about this. I had plans to shiny hunt one in Emerald. Thanks for pointing it out ^^
this is only correct in gen 3 though. Gen 4 forward Shed's movepool and stats make it a special attacker, and it gets quiver dance to handle statboosting.
@@F14thunderhawk Good for me, this is a gen 3 video
@@F14thunderhawk Absolutely not. Shedinja has a 90 base Atk, and a 30 base SpA. Using it specially in DP+ would be braindead.

Technically you can evolve golbat into crobat at level 23 if you maxed his happiness
Zu/Gol/Crobat is the most reliably good Pokemon in the entire franchise tbh
I think Camerupt is the most underrated pokemon in emerald because of it's 4x water weakness people don't want to use it, but it is one of the only mons that learns both rock slide and earthquake by level up. Both relatively low at 33 and 37 and you can give it the overheat tm from flannery. And just those 3 moves is enough to make it do a good to great job versus every mon that isn't water.
it's the best fire type if you choose mudkip (tbh the other choices are magcargo and torkoal so its not really a competition but it's great)
@@emkalinaNinetales: Am I a joke to you?
@@darkfiredragon3410 i honestly forgot about it since it's later in the game. still, camerupt has much better offensive moveset
The combination of being slow and frail hurts it so much.
Too slow to actually do anything
Swords Dance Absol is pretty ridiculous. Ariel Ace and Shadow Ball have great coverage for this game specifically. Lack of STAB hurts, but 130 base attack + swords dance makes up for it
Swords dance and hyper beam can also be a last ditch effort one shot anytime you get in trouble
I agree with this statement
Ghost and Dark are literally the same offensive-wise as they both hit Psychic and Ghost for super effective damage. The only difference between the two is that Ghost attack can't hit normal types.
So no, its NOT great ''coverage''. Both do the same exact thing, however dark is special, which is bad on Absol.Don't give it a dark type move.
lack of speed hurts even more...
@@drunkenpumpkins7401 in gen 3 ghost is physical so Absol can make good use of its attack stat, lol
If you play on shift your opinion shouldn't matter because shift mode is a joke intended for 5 year olds
I like slaking and used it on set mode.
Also Salamence is bad for the same reason, you can only use it for the e4, and you don't need it
Also has atrocious level up moves... like no water STAB until HM surf, and best grass move is Bullet Seed until TM Giga Drain is so painful
Crobat is really good as a partner for Swampert. It 4x resists swampert's one weakness, and sludge bomb is still physical in this game. It's surprisingly bulky and outspeeds everything
Yes! Weezing and Muk are similar, with 2x resistance to grass.
Crobat also has access to Shadow Ball this gen, too!
Yup that's what I'm currently running lol
Yes! Swampert and Cobat put the entire game in your pocket
confuse ray is such an underrated move as well imo
I used grumpig as an underrated psychic type. And it's not bad at all.
Got claydol on my run this time as well, also really like the look of him. Looks sorta ancient to me
Better than Gardevoir in my opinion
Happy to see someone who knows the true value of this antic Dogu!
I think Shedinja is underrated for a playthrough. It's fun to use and mess with the computer controlled trainers' behaviors.
Yeah, my cousin (who is older than me) told me it was his favourite Pokemon to use in gen 3, he told me he never let it get ko'd once lol.
Funny thing about Shedinja, is that wild Kyogre can't hit it at all, so after you weaken it, you can easily walk it with a brand new Shedinja and have like 20-30 turns to try to catch it.
@@IKMcGwee it also learns false swipe. Incredible
Shedinja is the most game breaking Pokémon available. Pretty sure it was intended to be an Easter egg mon
Bellossom is really underated imo ; not really because of her stats, but mainly for her design (that I love btw). I went out of my way when I was younger to add her to my team and was so happy to use her, just for the joy of seen her dance and destroy the few fights a grass type is good after the 5/6 gym
Vileplume is superior to Bellossom sorry but that is the cold hard truth
My underrated pick would be Dusclops - It doesn't take a lot of investment to evolve Duskull, can level up with less EXP, and customize it's moveset to be whatever you want (mixed coverage, status annoyer, tank)
it's part of the fast exp group, so it needs less exp to gain levels than most, which helps with it's more defensive playstyle! Ghost is helpful in this gen as many pokemon movesets still rely on normal moves for coverage. Gets good access to various TMs, and is bulky enough to tank tons of hits and deal reliable damage back, especially in Tate + Liza's gym.
I have literally cleared the Elite 4 with only a Rayquaza and it feels SOOOOOOO GOOOOOD lol
Most underrated in Emerald: Ludicolo. Because he's just dancin' and vibin', and I just think that's neat.
Easily the best. Tanky staller type with good sp attack, with very little weaknesses. Blaziken is just a better sweeper then Breloom due to having 2 types and the movepool to back them up.
Such a sick dude. They were rude to not give him good moves and a late evo stone

@helohel5915 you just smash rocks at the dark cave in Dewford, he just has an extremely low encounter rate.

Azumarill is extremely underrated (if you don't take Mudkip as a starter) as a water type because its super early (Marill) and it gets huge power. And even if you don't want to use it late game, it can become your hm friend.
Azumarill is close to broken in ORAS
@@dvillines26 I have only done one playthrough of it. I mostly played competitive around then so. I used Slaking and Azumarill lol

Definitely. Even without stab, a Huge Power Return from Azumarill can do some amazing damage.
Swallot is bulky, gets good stab moves in early, has recovery and its adorable
I feel like people sleep on Sableye. It completely trivializes Brawly and honestly provides much better support in the late game than people think.
Ive used one. It kinda falls off at Victory Road but its a good status spammer with Swagger toxic and more annoying moves in general
Its amazing gyms in 4/8 gyms but really mid to bad outside of that. Its bad league really holds it back
I agree, I used it and it helped a lot with psychic gym as an additional DMG if the swampert didn't finish off with surf and in the first 3 E4 through Brick break
This is not a Pokemon that is supposed to be the main source of damage, but it works well against weakened opponents
@@SirLucian huge power medicham is pretty slept on also

I'd say the lotad line is pretty underrated. Not as good as shroomish, but the grass/water typing is pretty solid
giga drain / surf / ice beam is an insane combo
It sucks until u get the water stone which I think it's dive locked so until 7th gym, it's basically dead weight till then
I would argue Ludicolo is *MUCH* better in gen 3, purely due to the fact that the phys/spec split wasn't a thing back then.
Breloom would always be locked into a moveset of Spore/Brick Break/Body Slam/Sludge Bomb which only hits 6 types for x2
Ludicolo on the other hand, is a special attacker, and has much better coverage; Ice Beam/Surf/Fire Punch/Thunder Punch/Giga Drain which, when configured to hit the most types for 2x, it comes out to 10 types, with the moveset Fire Punch/Ice Beam/Giga Drain/Surf which makes use of both of Ludicolo's STAB types (Breloom only makes use of Fightning), not to mention Ludicolo is much bulkier than Breloom, and can easily outspeed almost anything if you also have Rain active.
Oh, and Breloom also takes takes to level up due to being in the 1.64m EXP category.
The only downside to Ludicolo is the fact that you get it so late (at the earliest, you get it after the 6th badge), meaning you can't really use it properly in a story playthrough. But at the same time, Shroomish is also complete ass until it evolves at level 54 (if you want Spore, which is a key move), which also takes ages (if not even longer than getting a Water Stone).
it gets quite literally no moves, not just not any strong moves, but ZERO moves, and thus it has to hoard all your good tms to be viable
@@first_8_digits_of_Pi just like nidoking or gyarados in kanto and everyone loveve them
Shoutout to Smeargle for being available in the wild in Emerald, while it's a postgame pick it's ability to pick up any move at all and use it makes it a wonderful treat when facing off with your friends.
Spore isn’t important as you’d have to wait till like 40s
@@walterp1028Spore will never be the perfect strategy because you use up your only guaranteed sleep turn on the turn you click it.
I am not sure if that should count though, but I will add my favorite change that I did get to experience in a Rom-Hack already: That just...pushed this particularly good and difficult Gym Leader over the edge:
Torkoal - Drought.
That misconception has stuck with me even up to now, I keep thinking it is FOR SOME REASON fire/rock...Would help give it some extra surprise bulk if it was in the sandstorms at least XD. )
Underrated
Torkoal is quite underrated. It gets good moves early, like Curse and Body Slam, along with Flamethrower at a reasonable point, along with Amnesia and Iron Defense. It's actually decent in Emerald, though admittedly it suffers in the late game.
He’s my all time favorite fire Pokémon!
@@BrotherofMuninn It's my favourite Hoenn Fire type. I really like it!
Ludicolo definitly isn't bad, however it has some really large problems
Honestly, the only gyms where the Lotad line is actually good is against the 1. and the 8. gym. All the others its either average, or just straight bad.
ive never heard anyone call Ludicolo underrated b4, especially in regular playthroughs, dude is too cool
Smith, do we wanna talk about that thunder wave into toxic play on Manectric? @16:10
Also Alakazam may be #1 but Breloom will always be #1 in my heart.
Plus STAB with faint attack and shadow ball is great for the twins and Agatha.
bro really calling the 20 bp special move knock off useful on hariyama 💀
It's useful in competitive, but that's not important here
do you know what it does
@@empressofbile barely anything in a playthrough as barely any enemy pokemon have items
He probably mixed it up with its current incarnation
To be fair, if Smith gives held items to gym leaders' pokemon, like leftovers or choice band, it would at least be an option to use. So maybe he's planning on something like that.
Thumbnail How treeko stans hype up their mon:
Yep
He completely ignored the early bullet seed tm saying that you had to use absorb the whole time 🙄
@@jufriol8733 It doesn’t matter cause Bullet Seed sucks as well 🙄
Most underrated pokemon: I’d have to say my most underrated pokemon is SCEPTILE!
Plus it looks like a dorky dinosaur thing, which is also fun.
is it really slept on if its like the most picked fossil?
@@Vanessa_exe That's just cuz cradily gets a piss poor moveset.
I used armaldo once in the e4, but I found it didn't contribute much besides sponging damage. I suppose it could be good for T&L. It does seem decent, but It doesn't get a lot in terms of moves either. You can slap eq on it, AP can boost, and brick break and aerial ace could be useful. It is kinda bogged down by the matchups late game.
Doesn't it get like no moves before Slash at level 40ish? Except maybe Ancient power which is as strong as dig or water pulse?
@@ApocolipticMonkey right but ignoring movesets I can guarantee nobody picked the root fossil
For those that didn't pick treecko, your given seedot, lotad, shroomish, oddish, Roselia and even cacnea before the *Root* fossil
The claws more appealing and sounds cooler.
And if you take the time to hatch one brand new, you can breed one with a level 37 Corsola to get Recover and Mirror Coat onto it for Fast recovery and immediate revenge shots, with its already decent 107 Special Defense.
fucking love walrein its so good
@@MrJJLand Walrein is really great but...
Maril and Tropius together can learn every HM in the game.
Cacturne is underrated, it should have been stronger, love his design.
My pick for underrated Pokemon for an Emerald playthrough is Seviper! It's not the fastest but you get it after the 3rd gym and with 100 in both offensive stats you can basically slap whatever move you want and it's always going to hit decently hard - and it's mixed stats are complimented well by Seviper's excellent starting moves (typically bite, poison tail, screech, and glare) and later it's bevvy of TM Moves (Flamethrower, Giga Drain, Earthquake, Iron Tail, Dig, Sludge Bomb, like seriously why can it learn so many moves)
I'll add Roselia here for gen 3 Pokemon that don't appear natively in Emerald.
I've always thought that dusclops was super underrated. Peak design, good bulk, and good status moves make it way cooler than I ever hear people say
I have not used Grumpig but I kinda want to now.
good moveset for it before Champion battle?
I used one for my Emerald Nuzlocke run and was pleasantly surprised, it also gets Taunt.
Love the bra eel such a funny lil gal
Hello, i would say Heracross is pretty underrated to use on RSE. yeah you get it as a rare encounter in safari zone after like the 6th gym but it's Heracross, all you need really is Brick Break and Megahorn to make it work
Flying....and Ghost.
@king_of_rats_Monfernep then switch. It does well against Psychic and dark, which is more common.
@@Alienldr i got. I have a shiny Manetrik, and it's cool. Also i have Wiglituff, what with body slam and Blizzard have real good game
@@senabecool7232 late game it can be a monster addition
I feel like Wingull always makes it onto an early team and that makes it underappreciated. If you're not on Mudkip you don't have a lot to work with and this always felt like the pick.
Agree!! Pelipper is dope
I almost always use Pelipper when I pick Sceptile. And I never regret it.
They really gave it Body Slam, Toxic and Sludge Bomb and thought we wouldn't notice >:)
@@bvd_vlvd It's such a great option for any rum, I love using it in Gale of Darkness too! I'm sure it'll make an appearance in one of my Emerald legacy playthroughs..
@@GrandMaesterStitch Oh word, I wasn't really a fan of Colloseum but if I try XD I'll make sure to pick up a Swalot
Actually agree with this one. Decent Pokémon for being a mono-poison, which might be the worst in-game typing you can have
I've always really liked Exploud for Gen 3. Even without Hyper Voice (until 62, making it irrelevant to a playthrough) it's got more than enough tools to be fantastic.
Exploud has an insane move pool even in gen 3! I taught mine Return instead of that late game Hyper Voice
Ninjask is underrated. Boi is fast, learns swords dance, protect, and baton pass for that late game playthrough. Almost perfect pairing with Blaziken.
I'm doing an Emerald playthrough with 2 of my friends right now and I can't say enough about how much Skarmory has kept me going!
Emerald has always been my favorite, so to get a copy of your game would be awesome!
Pelliper carried me in my nuzlocke; it learns hms, gets good moves like ice beam and protect before Norman, and is found at the start of the game
Yes!
@bvd_vlvd fair enough honestly, Zangoose is singlehandedly top 3 reasons I play ruby over emerald
@@larryhunter6824For me it's:
1. Trainer's eyes
2. Champion Steven
3. Zangoose
I also love the clunkier design of the whole game, Emerald feels too much like FRLG and not like Hoenn tbh. I might genuinely prefer R/S over Emerald lol
@@larryhunter6824best non legendary besides swampert for ruby, imo
A super fast electric type that you can get in its evolved state: Electrode was a fun pokemon to use on my Emerald playthrough. And while Absol may not be perfectly viable, it is badass looking.
used electrode in emerald trashlocke and it was really good for winona, juan, glacia, and wallace
True, even tho selemance is good it not really worth it to be use because of how long it take
Plusle and minun not being the most useful is outrageous 😤
No lie theyre better than most in the region

The only thing they useful at is being a good pair of
I can't say that it's underrated or overrated but i have HEAVY nostalgia for Walrein. I just remember it being a monster, taking hits and dishing them out like a boss.
Altaria is for sure underrated. Bulky AF, has access to recovery, and able to setup sweep if needed.
You also get it very early, everything considered.
@@lyn4739 But your stuck with Swablu for most of the time until maybe the 6th gym
What recovery does Altaria even get? Roost doesn't exist, no Recover, no Slack Off.
@@lyn4739 That's true. Plus, if you aren't using Dragon Dance, you can Rest and switch out to wake it up.
@@rjante2236 wait, how does switching out wake up from Sleep status in Gen 3
Buttifly and Dustox are the 2 most underrated. Even into lvl 30-40, they can keep up and have great utility
I love the fact that you take aviability into considwration, so many people underappreciate it a lot

People sleeping on ninjask with protect, baton pass, substitute and swords dance for sure
only for major fights only😅
@@VitorSilva-tl6mo It's a bit too annoying for me to wait till lvl45 to use it (which is when it learns swords dance).
Mega sceptile is dragon grass so it's legit to say that sceptile is pretty much the strongest grass starters compared to other regions
Yeah that's what I felt about Hariyama too
The most underrated is probably either chinchou or Horsea. Absolute beasts in the late game for little to no drawbacks
Just tried Chinchou for the first time in Emerald and I can’t believe I ignored this amazing Pokémon all the time.
Lanturn is absolutely busted. Even in Gen 2 with no Volt/Water Absorb
I used it in silver version as a kid and it was great, bulky with a good type combo
Chinchou/Lanturn was on my Gen 2 team with Rain Dance, Surf, and Thunder. Final move was either Spark for regular encounters, or Confuse Ray just to be a troll.
Kingdra mentioned! Sadly no decent Dragon type move and you have to do alot of breeding shenanigans to get Dragonbreath.
