- 100% of the time I do solo challenges based off of the speedruns but today is different. Weedle requires a very lucky run to beat the game but this video will go over just how lucky you'd have to be.

►I can only use the title Pokemon in battle. No switching at all, HM Pokemon are required.
►No use of items in battle. Potions, TMs, etc. are allowed outside of battle.
►No use of skips/exploits. This includes the Pokedoll Marowak skip. Badge boost is unavoidable.
►The TMs for Double Team and Toxic are banned. Pokemon that learn similar moves naturally are allowed to use it but not the TM.
►I play on x3 speed and use the in-game time for the run along with resets to rank these runs.

This was AMAZING. I can't believe you just breezed through the game like that. The dragonite only being able to do 15 TOTAL damage? This strategy was insane.

Yea the video is through the lens of no item standard challenges that I do. I've gotten a lot of movechange suggestions, stat changes, or item suggestions but at that point is it even Weedle anymore lol.

I would have loved for you to somehow give Weedle however many hundreds of extra levels it needed to beat the game and knock out Mewtwo. The napkin math on the long, long odds of beating the game with Weedle normally was quite a treat. Good video Brother!
It was quite fun to just turn off the timer and check things but extra levels would just lengthen the grind 2 to 3 fold and then I would have to admit maybe it’s not worth it anymore lol.
In theory you could set Weedle's level as high as 255, max out its DVs and stat experience, and turn off experience to prevent it from leveling down to 100 after gaining EXP. This would give it in-battle stats of 708 HP, 475 ATK, 446 DEF, 389 SPC, and 561 SPD. This makes Giovanni very doable with Struggle, which is a possible OHKO even on Rhydon. Agatha's Gengars are 3HKOs with Poison Sting, while Haunter, Arbok, and Golbat are 2HKOs. Lance might be doable even at level 100 due to his AI, while Giovanni and Agatha are probably beatable around level 150, but the Champion could still be a problem since Charizard's Fire Blast can still take out 20-25% of your HP, and Weedle can't OHKO Charizard even with Struggle until level 168, with the guarantee coming only at level 183. Level 183 gives a guaranteed OHKO on Alakazam with Poison Sting, and level 183 Poison Sting is also a likely OHKO on Charizard if Rhydon badge boosts you six times while you attempt a 14HKO on it.

Just fyi 39 badge boosts is a 98.84 x multiplier so it would essentially max out your stats and poison sting would do some real damage.
That 5 effective power putting in some work. It'll do as much damage as a normal Pokemon using an average move lol.

I think Jrose made it through Giovanni in his video but I tried like a thousand times and just the idea that you could get past the first two Pokemon and just have them not do any damage or debuff any of your stats is wild to me. That's near TAS levels of luck that he got in his run. Not only that but he perfectly got to struggle strats right on the Nidos and they only went for 35/40 base power normal moves to allow him to get to the end lol.
@GymLeaderMatt1987 and even then Jrose had to go all the way to Let's Go to actually beat a game with Weedle. The video was like 3 hours long and must have taken hundreds of hours of playing... you're a saner man for knowing it's not worth taking that far.

I'm a nerd, so the math segment was really great for me. A different kind of video today, but still a good one. Nice to see you provide the answer to why it's ranked where it is.

The amount of patience needed to even get to Giovanni is absurd, you're a Real One for attempting this!
The Agatha fight for Weedle has always interested me as someone with a statistics background. I'm pretty sure someone somewhere has already done a deep dive, but I do have an idea on how to approach it with something called a Markov Chain. Agatha switching makes that really tricky though.
Yea the switching and the variables make it really hard to even get a grasp on the increasing chance of failure after you take even 1 damaging move so a modest approach with the disclaimer that it’s much worse is the best approach for this.
The worst thing about this run is I'll never be able to figure out if TM 28 contains TOMBSTONER.
We never find that out.

Weedle gets Bug Bite and Electroweb in later generations. It'd be close, but I imagine it'd be possible to beat gen 1 with those moves without insane odds.
I'm sure it would and there have been a few to point it out but for me it came down to asking myself what a run like that does for me. It doesn't bring me any joy, fun, or any tangible results I can use in line with other runs lol.
Great vid. It possible to beat Giovanni withOUT save states by going in with only a few poison stings and then finishing with struggling. It’s very hard but I’ve done it and Jrose has as well.
I would say that's pretty interesting but the odds are still incredibly low. I didn't really focus on that fight just because Agatha exists. Its the real impossible time sink lmao. This was NOT fun.

I know it was not the point of your video but I just wanted to point out Weedle runs withOUT save states end at Lorelei and the “start with 15 poison stings into struggle” does work. It’s hard though. Rival 6 is easier.

It's the reason I haven't spread the speedrun cheeks and dove in. I have no doubt I could do decent. Probably not world record or anything but the manual inputs for hours at a time during every single part of text is grating.

It didn't take near as long as that but still way too long for a run. Most runs are like 40 minutes to an hour lol.

Hi Matt, enjoyed the video, just at the end around 34:00 you say 1 in 7 adults can't read this, what specific statistic is that? I looked up global and developed world literary rates and found 95% and 99.2% respectively, so wondering if this is, access to RUclips or something like that?
It could just be the US. 14% is the number I found and I googled again and found it there still. 99% seems a little crazy but I just typed in some fun statistics and went with it.
Ah I see, thanks! Yeah, looks to be a mostly USA stat sadly, finding similar numbers for the US, but most developed countries are closer to 95-100%.

@@GymLeaderMatt1987it still seemed pretty painful just getting to Giovanni but you made your point pretty thoroughly. The irony is that it wouldn’t be THIS bad if it just got the rest of its line’s level up move set like 99% of other Pokémon.
Yea i think Jrose made it past Giovanni. I won't speak on the legitimacy or anything like that but making it past Rhyhorn/Dugtrio with full health, zero debuffs on defense/attack/accuracy, perfectly getting to struggle strats and having both Nidos only go for Scratch/Tackle just speaks to the kind of luck you'd need.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987Yeah the luck required is insane given the number of things that would have to go just right and he ended up giving up and making very similar points about Agatha anyway, but if anyone was going to throw himself at the same wall over and over again it’s probably jrose considering the way he plays elite 4 runs. His victreebel run was hard to watch, not great routing or play.
I haven't watched that one yet! I probably will but tbh I've been burnt out on long form Pokemon content for nearly 2 years at this point. When Jrose did the whole December thing and Scott followed suit and all his lackies tried the same, it was just an overload. I'm not sure about the psychology about it but it mainly boils down to too much content for me to consume.
Whew BRUTAL! I'm not surprised at all that Weedle can't do it even at the max level. I watched JRose11 do this some time back and he had a lot of the same problems you had and just like you he wasn't able to complete it. But I'll still give you an A for effort and thanks for the mathematics on the probability, I'm sure JRose11 did the same in his video. In any case take it easy, because I'm sure doing this run left you with some nasty migraines, also Happy Easter!
Appreciate it! Yea I got several comments over the years and it irked me that people didn’t realize just how stacked the deck is against Weedle. Jrose’s Giovanni fight is a little sus but given infinite attempts, it could happen but I’ve been wanting to talk about odds for a while on this lol.
Change the game so that weedle can go above level 100. I'm curious what level it would be to win the game.

I’ve seen it. I’ll let people make their own decisions on that. He beat it by not having a perfect fight where he was able to get to struggle strats within the fight and didn’t take a debuff or single point of damage for a while. Lottery levels of luck just. He should have beaten Agatha too, I’m sure a lot of people would believe that as well.

Weedle's back sprite was looking like it asks you every single time that you sent it to battle, when is it going to end?!😂😂😂
Basically,form the get go,the game likes to remind you that Pokémon is so bad ,that it's Brock split is equivalent to a good Pokémon's crystal run.😂😂 Trying to optimise that part alone is a formula for madness, but you asked and did play with madness, and you did it in the best possible way.
I also really liked the explanation that you did why this challenge was doomed to fail to begin with. Frankly speaking, I don't think that even at level 255 Weedle could do it without x items. But maybe it (in a legit way) could do it in crystal, but that's too much madness for one year.🫡
I think some curious people did the math for me. I think level 183ish is where you'd need to be to do it but not too much higher if it fails. It's crazy and I'll leave that up to someone else lol. I do think it's funny how Weedle's Brock split is a full F tier run on it's own and that just scratches the surface of how bad it is. I had the itch to explain the Agatha odds and probability for a long time now and I figured I'd wrap it up in a video.

That Brock split was something else. I think that a 0dvs Beedril would have finished the game twice, compared to Weedle's Brock split.
Ha, that's a lot of faith in Beedrill. It's really bad early game, decent late but I don't know if it's a top tier mon. B tier at best is my guess.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Beedril is an okay pokemon I think that it's heading into high C tier ,if doesn't have luck in particular places. The Brock split will be its major time loss.🤔

A german youtuber called CreepfanLP actually did it.
With items, sure but you could throw a level 20 Pokémon out and win most battles with items.
He did not use items in battle. He is the first (and to my knowledge only one) who did it with conventional solo run rules.
@@stallone5017 I'm not saying its not legit but spending less than a minute on a fight that has the mathematical probability of surviving a plane crash and only saying 'you can't use struggle here' doesn't convince me. I'd have to see a live stream of it happening. Someone that doesn't even acknowledge how many attempts it took them probably did something other than straight playing.

He actually says it was almost impossible and that it took over a week to beat. He talks about how he had to PP-Up his Poision Stings to the max, what Problems he faced and a lot of other things. He livestreams his other challanges often, but I don't know if he streamed this one. Of Course he could have faked the Video, I can't prove it's legit.
@@stallone5017 All I can do is present the odds and probability. It's up to you to decide if someone could actually do it. Think about it like someone getting 3 full odd shinies in a row. It's not something you do in a week and it's likely something that someone could spend their life on and never have it happen but let me say one final thing.
The point to where the probability reaches 99% where it's likely to happen is around 138.15 million, and that's a very conservative figure. Let's assume someone plays out every fight to see if they get the luck and on average each reset is around 20 seconds.
If you never slept, ate, or took a break and reset continuously for a whole day, that's 4,320 resets in a day, which no one would realistically do but I'm comfortable pretending that this person is a robot that doesn't need to do those things. In this situation, take a guess how long it would take to reach that probability without eating/sleeping/etc?
The answer is 31,979 days and some change. That's 87.6 years assuming you never sleep, eat, have a job, or do anything other than do roughly 20 second resets on a Weedle run from like the age of 10 all the way to when you are about to turn 98 years old.
I'm sorry but someone saying they spent a week sounds like something only gullible people who have no clue about odds, statistics, or probability would believe.

It's really not a Weedle solo run. We just need to talk why it's improbable and how foolish people look when they try.
I mean you could do a video similar to when you insert next gen mons into gen 1 game and maybe see if weedle could win if it had better stab moves like acid and twinneedle or harden to its moveset. That way it's not TOO broken but still not a huge advantage or anything.
I’ll leave that to someone else, lol. If I’m taking the time to make custom stuff, I want to have more fun with it so let’s see Garchomp or other legendaries.

But Weedle can learn it in later gens (As opposed to better Bug moves.) That's why I brought it up.
It's funny how strong bug as a type was in gen 1, being strong against poison (the most abundabt type) and psychic (the most broken type in gen 1) alongside grass (being quad effective nearly always because nearly all grass types are also poison types) and it just was a trash type because the pokémon were trash or didn't learn any bug moves. It losing a SE matchup against poison and out of 3 new types, 2 resisting it really just destroyed the type's availability later on.
Unless I made a mistake in my quick attempt at working out how you got the 1:24,000,000 from 4.119x10^-9, you were actually off by a factor of 10. It should be 1:240,000,000 instead. Making you 10x more likely to survive a plane crash than to defeat Agatha with a Weedle.
Oh yea. It’s hard to quantify and it’s likely higher than that is lol.
If there's any net positive about this run, it's this.
There is now the visualization of you using a KO'd Surf HM slave like a boogie board on your brisk swims to Cinnabar. Or if it's a Snorlax, a raft.
Also the sheer math of calculating winning the Agatha Lottery.
I love it lol. Also the math is very broad. Like if you took a Night Shade, your already incredibly low odds go down significantly then you need to calculate in the hp loss with other stuff so it was conservative but it gives a basic idea I think.
I was invested until you admitted it wasn't a fully optimized Brock split. Turned it off after that.

It wasn't too bad! I didn't do a ton of runs, spread it out, and overall it took about the same as normal and not even close to how long a versus video takes!

It is boring but pitting yourself in the pit of doing all the runs, you have to elaborate a little sometimes. It's not always Mewtwo and Alakazams lol.

Probably, but I didn't see a point of that. Half his Pokemon can't even damage Weedle lol. Champion is probably a hard no.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Well I kind of wish you had timed it and basically used cheats to pass agatha since it is "Technically" possible.. I understand why you didn't though it just would have been interesting.
Where do you put a Pokemon where you had to cheat to get past a battle and spent 3/4 times longer than a Pokemon that has a zero out of 100 rating lol. Timing things when you spread them out over the course of a couple of weeks gets messy and I needed a more laid back approach or it'll start feeling like a slog and a chore, which you never want from your hobbies.

The thing is that Weedle is Theoretically possible even though it is a 1/25,000,000+ Chance that you could beat agatha.. I guess my thoughts are that if Giovanni and Agatha are possible then I suppose with save states it would be possible to get an Accurate "Time" although the reset counter would be In the Dozens of millions..
I can confidently tell you I'll never do a run with even 3 digit reset counters again ever lmao. Magikarp with event moves was the last one from the end of 2022.

Mandela effect! Yellow takes out the early Weedles and 95+% of the wild Viridian battles are Caterpie. Same with Leaf Green. You truly cut Weedle out of your experience lmao.

I'd be interested to see how Weedle would fare in a run where the odds are stacked in its favor (stuff like crit on demand, always max damage rolls against opponents, always take min damage rolls from opponents, etc.), just to see if it's possible.
On a similar note, I wonder if Weedle could beat the game if it had Harden (for badge boosts) and Twineedle (for coverage), or if its stats are just too low to carry it even with those extra moves. At that point though it'd basically just be Beedrill with worse stats. 😝
At that point you are just giving Pokemon made up moves and basically giving it TAS level odds. I'm not sure what I'd even do with that sort of run when it's done. I guess just say 'cool' and move on with my life lol.
See like me personally im more interested in seeing how far you can take this vs seeing the end of the Kahn crystal run, idk I guess I’m into watching other people suffering but get more entertainment out of seeing if it’s even possible 😅

i think that giovani is actually easier for weedle in yellow version because of the persian. not by a lot but still.
With mimic it’s not too bad but almost all his Pokémon have earthquake and there’s rockslide. It’s infinitely harder in my opinion.

Do you think level 15 would be consistent with stat experience for blackout grinding? I know you said 16 was required with candies, but like you said, no stat experience with those.
I didn't have much luck at 15. The extra defense and health made it to where I had zero resets in that part where it felt like I could die easier at 15.
Giving it any other good moves would at least make this better.

I'm sure someone desperate and hungry for views might do it but it when you are making yourself crit a lot and just making the opponents miss or use bad moves, it's hard to see the point. It sounds very tedious and very boring to watch.
The Emerald TAS is much more entertaining with Machop, crits, and guts.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Yes, it is obviously a different type of videos. And normally it is quite interesting to see, why a decision for this or that was made. So with Weedle without a lot of decisions, there obviously isn't a point of it. But I just would be interested, how fast it is possible in theory.
I've thought about TAS content but at the end of the day I just like playing Pokemon and how do you decide the limits of a perfect run. Do you just let the perfect situations always align and if you do, wouldn't nearly every decent run end up at the same time?
