Victreebel has a special place in my heart. When I first got Pokemon Blue, I picked Charmander because the idea of the little fire goblin being my fire goblin was too exciting an idea to pass up. I had no idea how things worked in the game. I assumed "Attack" correlated to everything that wasn't your Pokemon's type (i.e. if Charmander some how learned how to use Water Gun, it would base the power of the attack off of the Attack stat), and thereby it meant special dictated that your same type attack would draw from that stat. Moves in gen 1 that have a high critical hit ratio, for those that are new, the 512 that's used divided by base speed for critical hits, is divided by 8, so 512 ÷ 8 = 64, and the base speed divides into 64, and gives you the percentage chance to crit, and since Victreebel's base speed is 70, that's a 100% chance to crit, minus the 1/256 chance it doesn't crit, so a 99.601% chance to critical hit. Now Pokemon like Bellsprout and Bulbasaur have a base speed of like 40 or so I think, so they have like a less than 2/3 chance to crit, less than 66% chance to crit, still high, but not guaranteed. Now if your base speed is 64 or higher with these sort of moves, and you accidentally use Guard Spec. or Focus Energy, it divides the 99.601% crit chance by 4, so like a 24.9% chance to crit, which is good for you if you plan to take advantage of the badge boost glitch, but unfortunately that's still about the same crit chance as Mewtwo, or slightly less, and you'll still occasionally get a critical hit at that percent, and it's higher than Starmie's base crit chance of 22.46%, so yeah go figure, you're still hoping to not crit to take advantage of the badge boost glitch, otherwise a crit ignores the boosts. Edit: TangerineTux in one of the replies to my comment mentioned me saying Guard Spec, and they asked if I meant Dire Hit, and yes that's what I meant, I wasn't thinking clearly when I made this long message. >:] On a more serious note, I wouldn't be surprised if it's yet another off-by-one error in Gen 1. Division and multiplication by powers of 2 on the Z80 (and its variants) is normally done by a shift operation. I can totally see somebody intending to shift twice (divide by 4), and instead shift three times (divide by 8)
Hey Jrose, love your content as always! Just wanted to commend you on all the years for your work. I also wanted to apologize, as I left a comment on a vid a year ago about how I felt the badge boost mentions were obnoxious. That was pretty asinine of me and I'm sorry for that. I blew a small feeling out of proportion. Keep up the great work!!
7:39 Actually, from what I remember, Lt. Surge does have good AI. Good AI will blindly prioritize super effective moves without considering the damage, but the routine for avoiding not very effective moves is a bit more nuanced; essentially, if all damaging moves are the same type, they won't avoid that type even if it's not very effective. Since Raichu's only damaging moves are Electric, Surge doesn't avoid using Electric moves, even though it's not very effective. There's a little more to it than this, but in most cases (including this one), that's all you need to know.

But im sure many of us emphatically said "Buh Buh Buh BADGE BOOST GLITCH!" So glad to have you still uploading these, theyre so addicting to watch
The badge boost glitch!!!!
Would love to see a red/blue run with you using your dream team. Like a full team. That’d be sick! 🤩
Great idea!
512/4 is not 64 looool
Maybe he meant 512/8?
he tried to get comments and outsmarted you.
Oh finally!!! I am so excited for a new jrose banger
8:20 there is a healing spot on the SS anne. You have a room assigned to you so you can use the bed to rest. This won’t affect dig because it won’t register as a Pokémon center.
That's in Fire Red/Leaf Green, not in red and blue
I've been waiting for Victreebel! Good enough moves and stats to plow through the game. And never apologize JRose for explaining stuff JRose. Sometimes those brief explanations can capture the new viewers awe, I know it did for me long ago!
2:57 to skip the ad
Thanks. Too bad youtube doesn't show this comment on mobile until the timestamp lol
When you see your Pokemon can learn Swords Dance and Body Slam, you know it doesn't need anything (or much) else. Especially in glitchy gen 1.
BADGE BOOST GLITCH!!!!
We need a multi hour super cut of all the badge boost glitch explanations in one video.
I been binging the old videos all day. Imagine my surprise to see a new one drop!
512 divided by 4 is 128 not 64
As the entire game runs in 256bit. I think he was supposed to say 256 and not 512.
three things in life are constant. death, taxes, and Jrose explaining the badge boost glitch
I think victreebell is the best Pokémon for this format in gen1. Including Mewtwo because of the level up group. Source: Scott's Thought's. Let's see how the true king deals with it.
Nicely done! I didn't even think about how good the type combo would be for Victreebel based on trainer AI! Would love to see a slowbro run or some fossils!
3:56 512/4 = 128
right im so lost wtf. He divided by eight and mispoke i guess?
@LeetTron5000 High-crit moves have 8 times higher crit chance, not 4. He either assumed it was 4 and didn't check the calculation, or he knew it was 8 but misspoke
I actually shouted "badge boost glitch" out loud on pure reflex.
512 / 4 = 128...
Just as I was feeling a little down, you saved my night Jrose!
512 divided by four is 64. lol.
Jrose: “To calculate the critical hit rate of razor leaf you take that 512 and divide it by 4”
Me: “Ok thatsss 128 right?”
Jrose: “which, if you’re bad at math, is 64.”
Me: “My entire life has been a lie.”
He said it's 64 if you are *bad* at math, not if you are good at math.
@@ZedaZ80 wait…that’s a great point actually 😂
>:] On a more serious note, I wouldn't be surprised if it's yet another off-by-one error in Gen 1. Division and multiplication by powers of 2 on the Z80 (and its variants) is normally done by a shift operation. I can totally see somebody intending to shift twice (divide by 4), and instead shift three times (divide by 8)
You know it’s gonna be a fast run when the hiker isn’t mentioned
Sleep move + Mimic + Badge boost move + Body Slam makes every Pokémon super OP in these runs.
Genuinely, Jrose gets some of the best sponsors I’ve seen on RUclips
There's a little more to it than this, but in most cases (including this one), that's all you need to know.
stop apologizing for your style and explaining everything
86 videos deep and im still learning about this game that i played 25 years ago
LONG HAVE I AWAITED THIS DAY!!!!
My favorite Pokemon finally gets a shot on the Jrose channel!
Good run! Would love to see the Ledyba Soul Silver run, waiting for it since the Spinarak heart gold run
"Someone probably said it" [Badge Boost Glitch] well of course I did, you've basically trained me to 😂 with the yell and all
This video is also a good collection of gen1 bugs and exploits that Jrose commonly encounters/uses.
I've been waiting for Victreebel. Excited to see how this plays out
