I got an earlier Starmie run on my channel. Water gun seems alright for the start but it makes the route to Bill's and even Misty a little bit of a slog. You also don't really get any moves until you make it past Surge and get to Celadon. It has one of the better mid to late games but that start puts it down on the list. For me personally that does tier lists of my own, Mewtwo, Nidoking, Cloyster, Alakazam, Zapdos, Mew, Gengar have all been faster than it.
You've forgotten that disable is even less accurate than Hypnosis in gen 1 and only disables a random move, so disabling Geodude's Tackle is even less likely than hitting a OHKO move, and trying to disable Onix's Bide is probably worse than the Agatha lottery. Also Brock has 5 Full Heal per pokemon, so it's really not worth the time trying to status them.
I love Hypno. When I played gen 1 as a kid I usually caught Drowzee instead of Abra. Hypno quickly became a staple in future playthroughs. The reason I had Hypno was because all the other kids in my class had Alakazam. I wanted to my own person, not the twentieth kid with an Alakazam.
Agreed. I intentionally stopped using my Kadabra last time I played for partly because everyone uses it and Alakazam. That and it's a little too good in Gen 1.
Drowzee is my favourite. He eats dreams for breakfast. So much better than dealing with Abra. Although Abra does let me do that glitch where you can get Mew b4 you fight Misty ...
Abra is harder to catch than drowzee though. The latter all you have to do is get him low health than catch. Abra will teleport after your first move (attack or pokeball). I’m usually not one to follow the crowd but I gotta say they’re all right in this case. Alakazam slaps..
Fun Fact: Hypno is the only pokemon that sees/saw play in RBY Ubers, OU, and UU. The tiers are determined by usage, and by usage Hypno is in UU, however it saw niche but respectable usage in OU and Ubers as a psychic type counter, since psychic is the only good type that can take a hit from psychic types, and Hypno has access to hypnosis with gen 1 OP sleep mechanics. It saw play in OU as a potential counter to Exeggutor and Alakazam, and in Ubers as a potential counter to Mewtwo (for reference: the only real Mewtwo counter in Ubers is another Mewtwo, so this is actually a fairly useful role). In UU it operated as both a standard sweeper and a psychic counter again. Source: False Swipe Gaming
@@briarsystem4316 I mean, no, because you can only run one of each Pokémon species, but I could absolutely see people doing that if there was some sort of exception of Hypno or Pokémon from lower tiers
14:18 - To clarify something about the badge boost from a software developer's perspective, I think when you level up the game won't be realizing the stats are wrong, it would run some code to recalculate your stats as you said, from your base stats and anything else that would apply including the single badge boosts that you're supposed to have. I guess when the developers implemented the badge boost they would have put it at the point in the code where stats are altered, not realizing this code also runs whenever stats change, or maybe forgetting to put a condition there so that the badge boost only applies at the start of battle or on a level up. Even if the devs were aware of this "bug" before the game was released, it would have been seen as a minor issue and not prioritized. Given how many bugs there are in the game I'd assume they were really up against it to complete the game before release so they would have focused on fixing more serious bugs.
While Hypno performed exceptionally well, this run is also a great showcase of how screwed over some Pokémon were by the Special stat split, another one being Dewgong (which should receive better stats or an evolution in a future generation IMO - perhaps Ursaluna-style, which doesn't make it so that only a regional variant can evolve). I'm interested in seeing how a run with Seel or Dewgong would go!
It also proves that the Seel line was only made for Generation 1 since Seel, despite getting a time comparable to most other unevolved Pokémon, felt like a Tangela time and Dewgong is literally at its best in Gen 1 and it still did not do that great.
The mega-evolution was a nice way for those pokemon to get a bit of love. If they'd stick to it. Anyway, Hypno would really appreciate it's SA and SD to be switched, and get one of it's talent changed for no guard, making it a dreadfull dream eater with enough bulk to stay on the field and do stuff.
Knowing Nintendo they'll make a regional dewgong variant with dual ice/steel typing so that it's 4 times weak to fire and not any better than the regular
I used a Hypno in my pokemon Yellow playthrough, and I was honestly amazed at how good it was. I mean, sure, it's a psychic type, but its movepool leaves a lot to be desired. I ended up using Psychic/Hypnosis/Dream Eater, with its last slot used for flash. While only have 1 type of move on a pokemon might seem odd, it worked effectively - the Psychic type was very op, and I managed to bully my way past Sabrina using Hypnosis + Dream Eater as well.
Hypno is a very good mon in just about every gen ive done runs on. Drowzee sucks but hypno has good defense and average attack. You can definitely start a nuzlocke with it and be very well off. Like just as easy as a starter.
I played pokemon blue kaizo recently and i really appreciate that bruno lost his spot on the elite 4. Would love to see a kaizo run from you in the future as well, you've got some of the most impressive gen1 knowledge and strats of any youtuber I've seen and it'd be awesome to see
After letting it go for a few episodes to see how I feel, I wanna offer my opinion on the new intro spot in the video. And personally, I love it. I feel the cold open explaining the run flows great into the intro.
8:51 Actually Tangela has really high Special. What it lacks, is HP. It has rather low to very low HP, depending on how you view it. So that's why it's still easy to knock out. It can take resisted hits like a boss though. I honestly feel funny about putting Hypno below Gengar. Gengar has Speed, but it's also Psychic weak and has to bend the knee to anything Psychic since its movepool is just Special moves, Hypnosis (which Hypno also has), and... that's about it. The typing also grants it a damn near immunity to the early-game due to Normal immunity, though, so...
@@CyberchaoX I want to stress something here. Tangela only having Grass and Normal-type attacks isn't necessarily bad or weird for a Grass-type, look at Bellsprout, he did great. It's bad for Tangela because he has the shittiest moves for both. Constrict until it learns fucking ABSORB at like Lv28? Which despite however weak Absorb is, it's literally over twice as strong as Constrict. WTF.
Gengar has far far more move variety, normal+fighting type immunities, higher speed and thus higher crit, etc. The numbers don't lie - Gengar was faster and lower level. Even Gastly went minimum battles, for comparison.
I unironically love Hypno. It was always my Psychic mon as a kid and I still often play with one, especially when I replay Gen 1. EDIT: I wasn't expecting the exact brand of demotion for Surge, and I just about lot it at his new title.
While you have definitely improved with these runs, it’s the little things like not being quite so stubborn regarding minimum battles, instead taking on easy trainers you can defeat very quickly, and as a result of that, grabbing Body Slam which has been tremendous in the runs you’ve chosen to get it. Thanks for another great video!
Now it's interesting to think how Drowzee and Kadabra would do. Love these shorter videos at times. Having runs where there isn't like 30 mins at the E4 is good.
I wonder how well starmie will do when you get to it. It's a strong, fast psychic type, and it actually has a good movepool unlike Alakazam. In fact, I'd say it has one of the best movepools in the game with access to Psychic, Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, Surf, and even Harden if you want to try to badge boost your way through some fights. The only potential hurdles will be Misty and Surge, but after that things should be really easy. And at least Brock will be really easy since it learns water gun at level 1. Sadly, the same won't be true for Staryu, which has to wait all the way until level 17 for water gun...

Great channel and great run! A couple advices from a Hypno user/fanatic, just in case you want to try to get it done at an ever lower time and level: 1) Hypno learns Psychic at level 37. If you can hold on with Confusion a couple levels more and/or add another powerful psychic attack at this point in the game (see 2), you can save TM29 for later. 2) When you get Fly, you can also have Dream Eater. It's as accurate as Psychic and has more power and PP. It does need a sleeping rival but A) Hypno is bulky so he can handle a couple hits until Hypnosis works; B) You'll be one-shooting most of the game so you don't need a lot of sleeping turns; C) You'll be getting HP back, therefore reducing your chances of losing; D) You'll be reducing your dependence on Badge Boost Glitch, which could eventually make your battles shorter.
Hypno did great. You did great too! Such a fun run, you're honestly doing amazing. Thank you for all the awesome videos, I'm always excited when I see the next one to watch.

Haven’t even finished the video yet but I already know this made my night. Much appreciated to see hypno. One of the top psychics to run through the game with if you couldn’t find someone to trade kadabra with back in the day. Starmie is also very good but takes campaign progress to catch normally. My gen 1 campaign team is usually venosaur, nidoking, fearow, hypno, starmie, X. Just an easy team to acquire that can use all HMs too. Nice and easy walkthrough with these guys.
fun fact, despite the hit hypno's special attack took in generation 2 (down to 73, from 115 after special was separated into two stats), in generation 6, it was alakazam received a small base stat buff to its special defense. hypno still remains untouched since it received its hugely undeserved nerf in generation 2.
Oh yeah baby! Hypno's a favorite of mine, ever since my first time playing FireRed and XD it proved to be a great Mixed Attacker. Thanks for the video JRose, keep it up and looking forward to future runs! ^^
Was a bit skeptical when you named your character Barb....and the pokemon you are using is Hypno....but thankfully you named your rival GPB. I couldn't be the only one that thought these references were going that way xD
YESSSSS HYPNO!!! over the years ive grown to love hypno. those lil ears, the big ol shnozz, that fluffy lil ruff... absolutely friend shaped, and im delighted to see it do so well 💚 also: military gift shop manager made me laugh irl, ahaha
Man you just killing it right now. One Video After another. Oh how you spoil us. You're the best when it comes to pokemon.. funny and scientific Very much appreciated
"Military gift shop manager" had me chuckling. 😄 Also, I like the new format of an intro, then the opening theme once you've set the stage, then into the gameplay. Feels really polished.
Pre-watch guess: This is going to be fairly easy. It's a psychic type in gen 1, it has _fantastic_ base special and its other stats aren't awful. It isn't very fast but since you'll be outleveling your opponents that won't matter as much. You start with Confusion so you don't have to grind to beat Brock and won't have trouble with other rock types in Mt. Moon. By the late game you'll have Meditate to take advantage of the badge boost glitch, you'll have psychic, and if you keep Hypnosis long enough you can grab Dream Eater too so that you have a healing move for endurance in longer fights. I'm not saying there will never be difficult sections, but this seems like a pretty clear-cut "good" pokemon that will speed through the game without much difficulty.
So, how about that true solo run with Surf, Strength and Cut Krabby (or Kingler)? 😄 Loving the regular videos Jrose, and if this request is getting annoying, let me know!
Damn Jose you disappeared for forever and then just started pumping out these videos like a production line. Loving the videos and keep up the good work man.
having seen a starmie run at normal speed, it was pretty much tied with Machamp. it can get past mistie by badge boosting and then it's basically free for the rest of the game.
I remember when this teir list only contained the 3 starters and pikachu. Now look at how detailed it is. Absolutely love it. Keep up the awesome videos
Is Rage really worse than Constrict and Focus Energy? There's often some amount of concern on these runs about conserving power points to not have to heal, and rage is also great at conserving power points.
I was slightly disappointed when I saw it was a shorter video but Hypno performed so insanely well it needed a shorter video to really emphasise that! Love seeing more of these videos, thank you!😊

Loving all these uploads!! Just make sure to take care of yourself too. I think we'd all prefer a longer rest between each video then having to take a hiatus to recover from the burnout
The Champion in Yellow is definitely way better than the Red/Blue Champion. He trades a couple of his pokemon for weaker ones (Sandslash instead of Rhydon, Ninetales or Flareon instead of Arcanine), but his pokemon have such better movesets (his Sandslash actually has Earthquake for example, so it's not a complete freebie every time like Red/Blue Rhydon and will wall Electric types hard). Also, I think at the end with the tier rankings, you should start zooming in on where you place the pokemon, it's getting hard to read the tier list and it's just gonna get harder the more pokemon that are added.
“I forgot I had Hypnosis.” If only you could have remembered the name of the Pokémon you were doing the run with!

I have no idea how this will go, but I know its gonna be interesting, what an awesome thing to wake up to in my feed.
Cheers dude!
I very much appreciated the names being Barb and GPB. :)
GPB would bit be happy being the crappy rival in real life, way more of a Barb vibe coming from the rival
I’m sitting on a ferry. Bored. Middle of nowhere. And as if an oasis in a desert I get enough signal to watch a JRose video. Life is good.
Even though I like Kadabra more, I still really like Hypno a lot. Awesome run as always, Jrose! I can’t wait to see the Cubone or Marowak run though.
Knowing that you make up everything on the spot makes some phrases very funny, I'm loving the videos.
Probably below Gengar and Alakazam, but pretty fast given psychic type and good stats
After watching, that is exactly where I was hoping he’d be in my comment on the last vid haha. So glad to see hypno on the list!
*WELP* Looks like I won't be sleeping tonight. Don't want Hypno haunting my dreams.
Next time you beat Surge he'll be the assistant to the gift shop manager.
fun fact, despite the hit hypno's special attack took in generation 2 (down to 73, from 115 after special was separated into two stats), in generation 6, it was alakazam received a small base stat buff to its special defense. hypno still remains untouched since it received its hugely undeserved nerf in generation 2.
FINALLY! I've been waiting for Hypno.
Such an underrated character, I'm excited for this
"Babe, it's 5 AM, time for your Jrose video!"
"Yes Honey"
Oh yeah baby! Hypno's a favorite of mine, ever since my first time playing FireRed and XD it proved to be a great Mixed Attacker.
Thanks for the video JRose, keep it up and looking forward to future runs! ^^
Was a bit skeptical when you named your character Barb....and the pokemon you are using is Hypno....but thankfully you named your rival GPB. I couldn't be the only one that thought these references were going that way xD
Wow, I can't wait what are the crazy new videos that are coming out soon! Jrose never lets me down.
I really like Hypno. I don't know why but I think he is pretty neat. He's always my MVP in Crystal runs.
J really knows color composition. Always these nice complimentary colors to go with the main choices for his runs. It's a great touch!
I really like how in your later runs you do consider doing more battles then doing the least amount of training as possible.
Better to waste two minutes on route trainers than two hours on E4 memers eh?
YESSSSS HYPNO!!! over the years ive grown to love hypno. those lil ears, the big ol shnozz, that fluffy lil ruff... absolutely friend shaped, and im delighted to see it do so well 💚
also: military gift shop manager made me laugh irl, ahaha
Definitely a more relaxed run than the last two lol
Man you just killing it right now. One Video After another.
Oh how you spoil us.
You're the best when it comes to pokemon.. funny and scientific
Very much appreciated
Didn’t expect a vid from you today yet alone this run and it was incredible. Looking forward to the next !
"we got some pretty abysmal luck"
My dude, you landed back to back to back hypnosis.
I'm glad to see Hypno did so well, he was on my original team! All I had was psychic types lol.
"Military gift shop manager" had me chuckling. 😄
Also, I like the new format of an intro, then the opening theme once you've set the stage, then into the gameplay. Feels really polished.
I used hypno a lot in Blue and Gold playthroughs as a kid. Haven't watched yet but keen to see how well it goes.
Good lord I’m so happy the content is back so regularly. You were missed.
11:52 Sabrina rocking the shiny Mr Mime
So, how about that true solo run with Surf, Strength and Cut Krabby (or Kingler)? 😄 Loving the regular videos Jrose, and if this request is getting annoying, let me know!
Lickitung as well
Damn Jose you disappeared for forever and then just started pumping out these videos like a production line. Loving the videos and keep up the good work man.
I feel like Starmie would be really fast
High speed, good special, broad movepool, only problem is that it's in the slow leveling group
Most of its movepool is locked behind TMS too
having seen a starmie run at normal speed, it was pretty much tied with Machamp. it can get past mistie by badge boosting and then it's basically free for the rest of the game.
Our BOY! HE BROUGHT BACK THE INTRO!!! Now you can do whatever creative things you want to do with the opening for another few videos
Would love to see a Mr Mime run to see how he does
I think he's just slightly worse Gengar honestly. with stab psychic and thunderbolt coverage. also no psychic weakness.
Love seeing more of these videos, thank you!😊
EARLY SQUAD WHERE YA AT; LOVE THE VIDS JROSE
Aww yeah guess who is jot going to be at a reasonable hour because he is watching jrose
Reporting in
Checking in
Hey
SOUNDING OFF SIR!
Jrose: *skips the first rival battle*
Me: "Wait, that's illegal."
5:10 'Thankfully not confused'
I thought in Gen 1 a pokemon can't receive a status as a side effect from a damage dealing move of the same type?
Confusion isn't a "true" status condition, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was left out of this rule.
I think we can all agree that this JRose with this upload schedule is the best JRose. Hope it never stops
great run Jrose. enjoyed it a lot. Hypno did better than expected. No Thunderbolt or Ice Beam needed
Love the references to grandpoobear and barb!
Bro you always come in clutch with a video. I was having a bad start to my day until I opened RUclips and saw a new video from you! Thank you for your content
5:58 “Military Gift Shop Manager” dang...
Dude I have no idea why I'm so addicted to watching your Pokemon runs lol even when some are like an hour long but I do man great content even half way threw the video I'm still entertained. Dropped a sub and likes on every video I watched so far great work
really enjoying this new upload schedule. These videos really help get me through the week and satisfy the data-driven part of my brain. Thanks, Jrose!
thank you Jrose for the massive increase in videos over the last six months
Loving all these uploads!! Just make sure to take care of yourself too. I think we'd all prefer a longer rest between each video then having to take a hiatus to recover from the burnout
That Weedle string shot run is the jrose 11 money shot we’ve all been waiting for
Ok I lol’ed at “ military gift shop manager Serge”
Free from work and get this amazing video dropped. Thanks man! Made my night! Absolutely love this series!
