Boba Fett literally only had less than six minutes of screen time in the Empire Strikes Back. He definitely was never meant to be a popular character, yet here we are forty years later with this character getting his own Disney Plus series. For a character who was so minor, Boba Fett really has had many comics, novels, toys and now TV shows dedicated to him. How did this happen? Why did a character so minor become so popular. Today we dive into this topic and try to explain why Boba Fett is so popular. Enjoy!

Boba Fett is super popular for several reasons:
    1. When we first were teased with him, it was in 1978 when fans were going insane waiting for more Star Wars content. We were hungry for anything. Then came the add on the back of the Kenner 20 backs for a free action figure of the newest character that would be shipped in 1979. Then we got the Holiday Special which, even as a kid, I knew was terrible. But the animated Boba Fett sequence was awesome. So there was tremendous anticipation for him long before he ever was in ESB.
    2. He looks cool. He has a jet pack, he has weird weapons all over his armor. He has spurs that jangle when he walks. He had a freaking cape! He was just too cool looking.
    3. In ESB, he was a total badass. When Vader lines up all the scary bounty hunters, he has to specifically address Fett to tell him not to disintegrate the heroes. Then, later on, he talks back to Vader, telling him that Han is no good to him dead. How does Vader react? Does he choke him like he did with several of his officers? No, he promises to compensate Fett.
Also, he is smart enough to outwit Han. He didn't fall for Han's trash ruse and was able to follow him to Bespin and lay a trap.
He is aware enough to know he is being followed by a Jedi (in training). When Luke is sneaking through Cloud City, Boba Fett knows it and fires on him.
No one who saw ESB in 1980 was disappointed with Boba Fett in the film. Now ROTJ was disappointing in how they handled him. He lost a lot of luster at that time. Fans who came to Star Wars after the 1980's never experienced those years of anticipation with only Fett to hold on to before 1980. So it makes sense that later fans don't have the same love of the character.

Also, when they started advertising the new mail-away action figure for EBB, there was a blurb that said that Boba Fett was a dangerous bounty hunter and would be big trouble for the Rebels, especially Han Solo. Han was everyone's favorite character and this guy was being positioned as Han's nemesis. That made him even cooler to an 8 year old at that time. Then after mailing away for him, we had to wait for it to arrive. And not every kid got them at the same time. I got mine a full 2 months before my best friend got his. So he was always coming over to play with mine. Having him made me the cool kid at school.
And finally, I forgot to mention the dents and scratches in his armor. His armor was already cool, but it wasn't polished like Vader's or a Stormtrooper's. His armor had seen many battles. The armor told the story of a guy who has seen some stuff. And then when I got the 12" doll in 1979, it said he had braided Wookie scalps. WHAT?!?! This guy has taken down and scalped Wookies? He was, is, and always shall be my favorite Star Wars character.

Excellent points!! Yes I agree with you totally. I wasn’t around in 1980, but I can just imagine how awesome it was to see him the first time on the big screen. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I have always asked myself this question as well, but I think you make good points here. I especially agree with the mysteriousness around the character and people's use of imagination. That all likely contributed to the rise in popularity. I too am enjoying book of boba fett! Awesome show!

To this day that " Boba Fett? Boba Fett where? " scene feels like a Scooby Doo gag. I already see Han as Shaggy and Chewie as Scoob!

I had the Boba toy when I was a kid and I loved it. I always loved the arbor. I didn't know if Boba Fett was a bad or good guy, but what I do remember is that I always made him win when I played with my figures. Really amazing to see have far this character has come in 40 something years. Very thoughtful discussion Dante

An add for Dr. Squatch Star Wars soap came up while watching this video. Really funny to see that boba fett isn't featured as a character on one of the bars of soap. At any rate, I agree with the points you make here. I never thought about it, but you're right, Boba Fett did absolutely nothing to get his bounty in Empire. But he got swallowed by Sarlacc so it all works out i guess. Moral of the story, don't have someone else do your work for you lmao

And: in answer to your question... Best costume ever + on-screen presence. -- Boba Fett is also a background character in deleted scenes of "New Hope". ;)

Definitely the mystery is what sold him. Plus the armor just looked cool as a kid. The line from Vader about "NO disintegrations!" showed how dangerous and scary he was. You had to use your imagination on who he was and his entire backstory. The new show doesn't bother me because it's telling Boba's story later in life. The prequel and explaining his origin is what hurts the mystique. Some things are better left unsaid and you use your imagination.

Happy new year, Dante! Good topic for a video. Boba Fett has been my favorite Star Wars character for a long time. Why? Well, my favorite Marvel superhero is Iron Man, and to me, Boba is the Iron Man of the Star Wars universe with his cool armor and high-tech weapons. Boba carries an aura of danger. I loved when Vader instructed him in "Empire", saying specifically to him, "no disintegrations" - this let the audience know right away that this bounty hunter was not to be messed with and that he had a deadly reputation.

Great points and yes I can see the parallels to iron man lol no disintegrations is classic! Love that line!

I can't explain why the younger generation loves Boba Fett( sorry I hated that clone wars series bit with him as a kid and that pushing the mandelorean arcs later) but I can tell you why as an older fan!
Boba Fett represents the outlaw. If he were in DC he'd be Jonah Hex. If Marvel, he'd be Cable. He plays by his own rules and someone you don't wanna cross. Though he was briefly shown in his movie appearance and cartoon debut- we took noticed how his cold, stoic demeanor could read ' don't mess with him!'
Really, its thanks to his lore, from the book Tales of the Bounty Hunter, to video games, to his many, exciting comics by Dark Horse; we got to explore his badassery that lived up to our presumption of him.
Although many things about Boba has been changed or retconned( many forget his real name was Jaster Mereel) we would never forget his past exploits in media represents why we love this dangerous Bounty Hunter. Let's not forget he took on Vader and lived to tell the tale!( and has been hired by him many times!)

Casual Fan: If your a Mandelorean, why aren't you *THE Mandelorean* ?
Boba: Well, because I'm a beloved legacy character. After Han Solo tanked, Disney was afraid to pair me with a cute kid... Especially a baby! So they let a new guy take charge. Since he was successful, I came back in Season 2! With a spinoff! But seriously... I need a new agent!
