“5.0ghz is required because is encrypted” is a false statement.
2.4ghz and 5.0ghz are signal frequencies and the data being is what’s encrypted. Not the signal.
2.4ghz will have a much longer range at the cost of throughput. It is also more susceptible to interference since a large majority of devices operate in that range.
So, using the connection that provides you with a better signal is recommend. In some cases 5.0ghz will not provide the range needed and 2.4ghz will perform better.

I'm outside of US and I got it last year. I'm living in the UK but I don't remember the process for registration. I checked their website through help and support and downloaded a new version of the app then logined again and it still works.
