Gary is now buried at Riverside in line between Leon and Billy. Riverside is just a few blocks away from the VanZant home, they're buried back where they started out from.
The song American Pie was inspired by the plane crash that killed Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper in the 50’s. As a kid when I heard about the crash that that killed Ronnie and Cassie and the others I thought “That’s when the music died.” R.I.P. to all from this incredible band.

I'll never forget the morning when l heard about Lynyrd Skynyrd's plane crash on the radio. I was getting ready to go to school (I was 16), and I just cried and cried. Skynyrd was one of my favorite bands, I even had a giant poster of the group on my bedroom wall. I had the poster framed 45, 46 yrs ago, and have taken it with me everywhere I've lived, and display it proudly! What an incredible legacy of music they left for us all to enjoy forever. "If I leave here tomorrow, will you still remember me?".. Of course we will. Thank you for this beautiful video, it was very respectful, and informative.
I saw him in Lakeland fla.just on the 18th before they died ..I felt like my world had ended ...I'm 78 now. And have always listened to them ..their my magic ..❤❤
In 1963 I sat next to Ed King waiting for classes at Toll Jr. high in Glendale, Ca. We became best friends cause I was going to be a concert classical guitarist and he said he played guitar too. In 1966 Ed refused to cut his hair and wasn't allowed to go to Hoover High. He was in Strawberry Alarm Clock band with Incense and peppermint song becoming #1 in the country. He reconnected with me in 2007 while living in Nashville. He told Hoover High reunion guy that I was his best friend back then. He was a good, talented guy and is missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace and entertain those in Heaven!

Don’t know what was in the water there but amazing musicians from that part of the country. RIP most of Skynyrd. And to think the guy Ronnie Van Zant wrote an all time song about ( Gary Rossington) ( That Smell) would be the last surviving member is even more of a head scratcher.

I'd say the Los Angeles scene with VAN HALEN, MOTLEY CRUE, QUIET RIOT, RATT and all of the other Sunset Strip bands and then the San Francisco scene with JOURNEY, MONTROSE, SAMMY HAGAR, SANTANA, JEFFERSON AIRPLANE were two big areas.

The Original Founding Bass Player was Larry Junstrom & he was buried in Orange Park,Florida .He was a friend of mine & I was at his services & it's where Gary Rossington who was sitting in front of me with his wife Dale & while we awaited the start of the service he turned around & introduced himself & shook my hand. I told him I knew who he was since I lived about 25 miles from Jacksonville for most of my life & Dale just laughed at us. I will never forget him for taking the time & effort to do what he did & I will always be a Fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd & the Tribute band that is now left behind.
You should have mentioned the fact that Gary Rossington was the Only Remaining Founding Member of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Ronnie and Gary were the two people that actually got a band together in the first place.
I agree, Gary was the only remaining original and founding member and now there is no one left in that category. Artimus qualifies as a member during the classic line-up because he played on some of the albums and was on the tours. Just my opinion, but if you didn't play on one of those original albums then you aren't really in the classic line-up. I know about Rickey's history prior to the first album, but to me his band is BLACKFOOT and I'd much rather see him do something with that heritage but I'm just a music fan so I don't begrudge the man doing whatever it takes to earn money.
If you were wondering about Bob you might want to find Artimus. They were good friends. As far as I am concerned right now the band using the LS name is just a tribute band. It was Judy Van Zant who pulled a power play and kicked Artimus out of LS. He is still touring as APB and doing well..

I did see the Rossington-Collins Band back in ‘81 and thought that was the way to go. Today, It is definitely a tribute or cover band, I don’t even think Gary is on stage anymore, a lot like Molly Hatchet with nobody who actually made any of the music or played on any of the classic albums actually on stage, yet people who don’t know still think they’re seeing Lynyrd Skynyrd or Molly Hatchet 🤘

From what I know from people who worked for the band while Judy was in control weren't getting paid on time. You're right. Gary will so an occasional show so it's hit or miss. All the band has got going for them is a loyal fan base. Some of them range from 70 all the way town to teens who were not even born. Up until a few years ago Roger Earl was the only original member of Foghat. Blue Oyster Cult still have some original members touring in their 70s. The Guess Who have been a tribute band for years. Some bands called it quits years ago. It's time for LS to retire.
It still boggles the mind how a plane like that was in such disrepair and 2 gallons of fuel would have saved them. Even added to that was allegedly the aircraft was going to get repaired right after that leg of the flight.
My sister had the original pressing of Street Survivors with the flames. It was removed quickly after the crash and deaths. I don't know how many original pressing are left. Edit : It's a shame most of them died so young. There's only 1 Lynyrd Skynyrd. There were others like The Outlaws, 38 Special and Molly Hatchet. The scene soon died and I haven't seen another southern rock band that could touch these guys.
I have a copy of the LP in the jacket with the flames. It is still gut-wrenching and horrible to look at that album and realize that it was a picture of things to occur three days later.

Bob Burns is also cremated. I'm sure his ashes are with his children's. They had memorial for Bob . Gary Rossington, Artimus Pyle was at the memorial. I'm sure Johnny Vanzant, Rickey Medlock and the other members of the Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band was there. Yeah I added the word tribute because I will never hear the end of it. People spend more time running their mouth about them being called Lynyrd Skynyrd even though Gary Rossington, Rickey Medlock is in the band. Rickey was with the band during the Muscle Sholes recordings and they were already called Lynyrd Skynyrd. And Ronnie Vanzant eventually was going to let Johnny Vanzant take over on vocals and Ronnie being the manager of the band but it didn't happen because of the plane crash. A lot of stuff was being planned for Skynyrd talks was made about writing with Neal Young and many other artists. Ed King was cremated as mentioned in this video but there was no memorial for Ed King. I heard he was in a middle of writing a book about his time with Skynyrd not sure if it was finished or if his wife will finish it.

Great Tribute! I was at The Fox Theater in Atlanta for the 2 concerts that were recorded for "One More From The Road". You left out Rickey Medlocke (of Blackfoot and of Skynyrd now) who was put on the drums. Rickey left because the drums were not his thing and he left on good terms. (Before the crash)

You're on the record, girl 🤣 As for Rickey, I left him out because technically he wasn't on any of the records from the debut thru Street Survivors and he didn't play in the band during those tours. After the crash, the record company was looking to cash in so they put out demo's and versions of songs that the band themselves chose not to put out and some of those songs did have Rickey on them. To me, Rickey is BLACKFOOT and personally, I'd rather see him put that band back together properly and tour with it and revive their legacy 🤘

AL Kooper took to the stage and introduced them! Skynyrd was known to most of us rockers from their appearances at different Atlanta nightclubs. I totally agree with you about Rickey Medlocke! HE IS BLACKFOOT! So talented and a nice dude. Thank you for the 411 on those early times when Rickey was with Skynyrd. As Johnny Carson would say "I did not know that!" I saw an interview awhile back with Rickey and he said Ronnie had invited him to get on the plane for that fateful ride because BLACKFOOT was in Greenville, SC performing. Bob Burns is cremated I have been told from his daughter that Bob and his wife ashes are mixed together they have no headstone. Ed King also has no headstone ashes are with his family. And of course there is one member left and that is Artimus Pyle. Gary Rossington died on March 5th 2023 and he is buried close to Billy Powell and Leon Wilkeson is not far from the both of them. Ronnie Vanzant is also not to far from Leon, Billy and Gary. Allen Collins is at the same cemetery but in the other section of the cemetery. The cemetery is divided by two parts the main road splits them in the other side and there Gym Coach is not far from Allen grave.
I was sitting in a restaurant eating in Bonnie Illinois got a wild hair and decided to drive 600 miles south to the Lynyrd Skynyrd Memorial which I did looked at it walked around then turned around and drove 600 miles right back up the next day. There's a real feeling that comes over you while you're standing there in that spot and checking that out
None of the guys are "replaceable", least of all Gary and Allen. But the band coulda carried on in some cohesive form had anyone other than Ronnie died. What they are today is a glorified tribute band for patriotic people. Which is cool and fine. Ronnie sang and wrote the lyrics. That is the core of the band. Very seldom can a new singer come in and the band retains the same energy. ACDC is perhaps the main one i can think of.
I think they were on to something in the early 80's when they picked up as the ROSSINGTON-COLLINS BAND, they even had a radio hit with 'Don't Misunderstand Me' and of course they played several LS songs in their live set. I saw them in '81 and it wasn't the same as seeing LS but it was pretty good. Personally, I've had no interest in seeing the many versions of the so-called reunion band over the years. Now I hear that even Gary isn't performing so there is no one from the 73-77 lineup actually in the band, kinda like MOLLY HATCHET with no members from the classic lineup that made their first 3 albums. In that case, an attorney bought the rights to the name, assembled a band and went out as Molly Hatchet and the majority of people who see them probably have no idea that no one on the stage had anything to do with any of those classic albums 🤘

Cassie and Steve Gaines are interred in Jacksonville Memory Gardens located in Orange Park, Florida not in the Riverside Memorial Park. This is also where Ronnie was till someone tried to break in his coffin and they moved him to Riverside.
I just saw Skynyrd the other night in Niagara Falls. While I agree they aren’t the original band….nobody ever will be…. They are still a great band and Gary, Johnny, and Rickey do a phenomenal job keeping the rest of the guys dreams alive.

It is interesting that he did not mention Ricky Medlock, who was an original member of the band from 72-71 before forming Blackfoot and then came back in 1996 to today.
You are correct, Daniel. Ricky was the original drummer for the band when they were playing small clubs and before they signed a record contract. He didn't play on any of the classic line-up albums up to the crash though, which is why he wasn't mentioned in this video. After the crash, a few compilation albums were released that did contain songs the band had recorded in those very early days with Ricky on drums, but the had decided against releasing them. The record companies at that point were looking to cash in, so they released everything they could find in the vaults. Hoping one day to do a video on the legacy of BLACKFOOT, a band that doesn't get any coverage 🤘

I saw Blackfoot a few times when I was a kid, warming up for Ted Nugent ,, Very good performers, and Train train and highway song hit it pretty big for a minute. Hes got a good enough history without trying to bamboozle people into thinking he was a meaningful original Skynyrd member. Once the tribute band was formed he was obviously a natural choice to be in the lineup.

My sister had the original pressing of Street Survivors with the flames. It was removed quickly after the crash and deaths. I don't know how many original pressing are left.
Edit : It's a shame most of them died so young. There's only 1 Lynyrd Skynyrd. There were others like The Outlaws, 38 Special and Molly Hatchet. The scene soon died and I haven't seen another southern rock band that could touch these guys.
I have a copy of the LP in the jacket with the flames. It is still gut-wrenching and horrible to look at that album and realize that it was a picture of things to occur three days later.

Bob Burns is also cremated. I'm sure his ashes are with his children's. They had memorial for Bob . Gary Rossington, Artimus Pyle was at the memorial. I'm sure Johnny Vanzant, Rickey Medlock and the other members of the Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band was there. Yeah I added the word tribute because I will never hear the end of it. People spend more time running their mouth about them being called Lynyrd Skynyrd even though Gary Rossington, Rickey Medlock is in the band. Rickey was with the band during the Muscle Sholes recordings and they were already called Lynyrd Skynyrd. And Ronnie Vanzant eventually was going to let Johnny Vanzant take over on vocals and Ronnie being the manager of the band but it didn't happen because of the plane crash. A lot of stuff was being planned for Skynyrd talks was made about writing with Neal Young and many other artists. Ed King was cremated as mentioned in this video but there was no memorial for Ed King. I heard he was in a middle of writing a book about his time with Skynyrd not sure if it was finished or if his wife will finish it.

I remember when Elvis died but not as much as I remember Skynyrd plane crash. I remember when the first issues of Street Survivor were released. There was a recall on the album. They didn't like the way the fire on the album cover was covering Steve Gaines face. I still have mine. RIP my friends

Great Tribute! I was at The Fox Theater in Atlanta for the 2 concerts that were recorded for "One More From The Road". You left out Rickey Medlocke (of Blackfoot and of Skynyrd now) who was put on the drums. Rickey left because the drums were not his thing and he left on good terms. (Before the crash)
Wow, Denise, what a historic 2-night concert to have attended. You're on the record, girl 🤣 As for Rickey, I left him out because technically he wasn't on any of the records from the debut thru Street Survivors and he didn't play in the band during those tours. After the crash, the record company was looking to cash in so they put out demo's and versions of songs that the band themselves chose not to put out and some of those songs did have Rickey on them. To me, Rickey is BLACKFOOT and personally, I'd rather see him put that band back together properly and tour with it and revive their legacy 🤘
@@TheGoldenAgeofHardRock Thank you kindly dear sir! I saw Skynyrd open for The Who on the Who's Quadrophenia Tour in Atlanta at The Omni in December 1973. AL Kooper took to the stage and introduced them! Skynyrd was known to most of us rockers from their appearances at different Atlanta nightclubs. I totally agree with you about Rickey Medlocke! HE IS BLACKFOOT! So talented and a nice dude. Thank you for the 411 on those early times when Rickey was with Skynyrd. As Johnny Carson would say "I did not know that!" I saw an interview awhile back with Rickey and he said Ronnie had invited him to get on the plane for that fateful ride because BLACKFOOT was in Greenville, SC performing. Rickey declined due to concert obligations but said he would catch them next time. WOW!!! Talking about FATE!! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK AND I'LL CATCH YOU ON THE FLIP SIDE!!💋✌👍🎶

In 1992 the Packers had a new head coach named Mike Holmgrin. Holmgrin used to say it doesn't matter where ya start it's where you finish. That saying applied to Skynyrd in so many ways. Don't worry about where ya start focus on where you want to finish.

Bob Burns is cremated I have been told from his daughter that Bob and his wife ashes are mixed together they have no headstone. Ed King also has no headstone ashes are with his family. And of course there is one member left and that is Artimus Pyle. Gary Rossington died on March 5th 2023 and he is buried close to Billy Powell and Leon Wilkeson is not far from the both of them. Ronnie Vanzant is also not to far from Leon, Billy and Gary. Allen Collins is at the same cemetery but in the other section of the cemetery. The cemetery is divided by two parts the main road splits them in the other side and there Gym Coach is not far from Allen grave.

I was sitting in a restaurant eating in Bonnie Illinois got a wild hair and decided to drive 600 miles south to the Lynyrd Skynyrd Memorial which I did looked at it walked around then turned around and drove 600 miles right back up the next day. There's a real feeling that comes over you while you're standing there in that spot and checking that out
None of the guys are "replaceable", least of all Gary and Allen. But the band coulda carried on in some cohesive form had anyone other than Ronnie died. What they are today is a glorified tribute band for patriotic people. Which is cool and fine. Ronnie sang and wrote the lyrics. That is the core of the band. Very seldom can a new singer come in and the band retains the same energy. ACDC is perhaps the main one i can think of.
I think they were on to something in the early 80's when they picked up as the ROSSINGTON-COLLINS BAND, they even had a radio hit with 'Don't Misunderstand Me' and of course they played several LS songs in their live set. I saw them in '81 and it wasn't the same as seeing LS but it was pretty good. Personally, I've had no interest in seeing the many versions of the so-called reunion band over the years. Now I hear that even Gary isn't performing so there is no one from the 73-77 lineup actually in the band, kinda like MOLLY HATCHET with no members from the classic lineup that made their first 3 albums. In that case, an attorney bought the rights to the name, assembled a band and went out as Molly Hatchet and the majority of people who see them probably have no idea that no one on the stage had anything to do with any of those classic albums 🤘

Cassie and Steve Gaines are interred in Jacksonville Memory Gardens located in Orange Park, Florida not in the Riverside Memorial Park. This is also where Ronnie was till someone tried to break in his coffin and they moved him to Riverside.

I just saw Skynyrd the other night in Niagara Falls. While I agree they aren’t the original band….nobody ever will be…. They are still a great band and Gary, Johnny, and Rickey do a phenomenal job keeping the rest of the guys dreams alive.

Steve and Cassie are not buried at the riverside cemetery, they are both at the Jacksonville Memorial Gardens cemetery in Orange Park Florida where Ronnie was first at before some one broke into his crypt. He was moved to the riverside cemetery in Jacksonville and placed beside his parents until recently, Judy moved him beside a pond in the riverside cemetery.

It is interesting that he did not mention Ricky Medlock, who was an original member of the band from 72-71 before forming Blackfoot and then came back in 1996 to today.
You are correct, Daniel. Ricky was the original drummer for the band when they were playing small clubs and before they signed a record contract. He didn't play on any of the classic line-up albums up to the crash though, which is why he wasn't mentioned in this video. After the crash, a few compilation albums were released that did contain songs the band had recorded in those very early days with Ricky on drums, but the had decided against releasing them. The record companies at that point were looking to cash in, so they released everything they could find in the vaults. Hoping one day to do a video on the legacy of BLACKFOOT, a band that doesn't get any coverage 🤘
@@TheGoldenAgeofHardRock I agree, Ricks association with the classic line-up was so fleeting and dubious that it doesn't rate a mention, though of course Rick himself likes to trump it up every chance he gets. I saw Blackfoot a few times when I was a kid, warming up for Ted Nugent ,, Very good performers, and Train train and highway song hit it pretty big for a minute. Hes got a good enough history without trying to bamboozle people into thinking he was a meaningful original Skynyrd member. Once the tribute band was formed he was obviously a natural choice to be in the lineup.
Probably for the same reason Pete Best is not looked to as a surviving Beatle,Ricky should focus on Blackfoot
