I think it sounds better today than it sounded 50 years ago. Back then there were a lot of great songs. Today all we have is trash to compare it to. It stands out like a 20 foot tall neon sign compared to the rubbish we have today.

There's just something about Drift Away! I used to work at a pharmacy. For a while it was on the music mix on our system at work. Without fail, customers and sales clerks alike would sing along when it would play. It would always lift our spirits. It was wonderful to see someone's face light up and there mood change just because of a song. The healing power of music is amazing!

Love Dobie Gray's version of Drift Away. My daughter would sing along with me whenever I would play it. She loved it so much that one time while driving my kids to the store, something happened and she began to cry. She only about 4 or 5, and she was having a good cry, but about a minute into Drift Away came on the radio and instantly, her crying turned into joy. That's how I feel about this song. It lifts my spirit whenever I hear it. It's so uplifting and sang beautifully. I love Uncle Kracker's version as well, but I don't think anyone can match Dobie Gray. A friend of mine owned a bar for a few years. Every Thursday was karaoke/trivia night. At the end of the night each week, my friend (and usually everyone in the bar) sang drift away. So this song will forever take me back to those fun Thursday nights in my thirties
I had just graduated from High School that year 1973 and I was living in a Boys home before I had to go out in the world on my own...the summer of 1973 was and is still my favorite summer in my life....and Drift Away was one of my favorite all time songs from that summer...thank you Dobie Gray

I LOVE that song. When I was in Germany, I saw an Album in the trash. I had never heard of Dobie Gray, but being a Singer/Songwriter I couldn't stand the thought of ANYBODY'S work being trashed like that. I took it home and I'll bet I played "Drift Away" 15 times in a row. I sat down and learned it, and covered it mixed in with my own songs. I felt a responsibility to get it heard! It is a superbly written song, and Dobie Gray did it justice!
As a black/indigenous child growing up in Oklahoma, this song reminded me of walking in the woods, alone with my thoughts, and contemplating life with nature as a background. It still resonates with me now, some fifty years later. I miss the aspirations of all peoples of the 1970s and my little innocent slice of life back then.
As a Caucasian/non-indigenous child from Ohio, I’m right there with you! Memories of sitting in the woods, on the banks of the Olentangy River, fishing for bluegills, catfish, smallmouth-anything that would bite-building a little campfire when it got dark, hanging out with my best friends and usually carrying a little transistor radio. I was about 9 years old when Drift Away hit the airwaves and hearing it now puts my mind right back to those great little spots and activities that made-up some of the best years of my life. 👍🏼❤️🫡

I loved that song and singer ever since the first time I heard it. And , still do to this day. It sends chills thru me when I hear it. It was this song that started me into playing music. The bass really was the attraction of the low frequencies that you could feel. In less than a year I had a bass and could play Drift Away. I am also 62 now and that song is one that will resonate with me forever.

I’ve always loved Drift Away. When it came on the radio not long ago again, I was confused. I told my kid that it was a remake. He loves it too! I jumped online and found Gray’s version which is of course the one I loved in the 70’s. Connecting generations!
My dad was the same way. Him and my mom had divorced when I was a baby and he would see us on the weekends. The first thing he would do is turn on the radio and start listening to old songs. I would get mad because I wanted to play with my friends and he would say "No just sit here and listen to this with me". This has become one of my favorite memories of him. Just chilling all day listening to music.

Ooh my gosh this song means so much to me, I even have it as my ring tone. My father played this song so much when I was young. Then when he died my sister and I were sitting in the car in his funeral entrouge when this song came on the radio. We all sang along and remembered our dad. Summer days in the park and winter nights listening to this whilst we drifted off to sleep. It was so unexpected because we were in Kenya and the radio kept going off and on but during that song it played all the way. My sister and I were convinced it was a message from him. 2015 my sister died and I was so shocked to see my sister chose that song at her funeral. I cried so much because I knew that was her message to me and my brother. Thank you for explaining the origins because so many people never remember it. Thank you.

What up Prof! I absolutely love the in-depth research you do on artists, who people think they just came out of nowhere, recorded a hit and then wandered back out of the spotlight. When in reality most of these artists have paid their dues many a year, grinding and working hard on the road. It seems most of them as well have had other songs released other than the one hit they're known for. Then afterwards go back to recording and touring even if they don't have another hit. I just want to give a shout-out to all of the "blue collar" musicians working their ass off out there!
When I first got Pandora I loved reading the biographies of musicians, it shed light onto their struggles to share their gift. In the Country genre it is amazing how many came from broken homes, especially in the 20s-50s when divorce was so much less accepted.
I remember the chills Dobie created when he belted this song at an outdoor concert in Nashville. He opened with a masterful rendition of “Who is That Mannnnnnnn” and had us in his hands for his entire set. Of course, Drift Away was the climax. 20 minute sets have come and gone in my mind and heart - but this one still chills me!
I was 11 years old in 1973. I remember being at my grandmas house, in the Summer, in her living room, all by myself playing. The stereo was always on and the music was set to a station that that played everything from rock to country and pop. Three songs I remember distinctly were The Doors, Light My Fire, Donna Fargo's "The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA, and Drift Away. The station played Drift way at the top of the hour, every hour, everyday, for that Summer, and I never got tired of it. "You know a melody can move me" is no lie.
Definitely one of my most favorite songs. When I hear it, I really do “drift away” to a different place, another time or an alternate reality for 3:57. I loved both Dobie Grey’s solo version and the duet with Kracker equally. Simply a masterpiece.

I was 10 years old in 1990, and my sisters and I were at our cousins place waiting for our father. We decided to play a game of Pictionary, my sister was up first and right as she started I belted out the line "I wanna get lost in your rock and roll" and she stops me because her clue answer was rock. Her very next turn I burst into "Turn that radio up for that sweet sound" and her word was radio. She was so mad because she didn't get to draw anything. That's the day I was banned from singing while playing board games with my family 😂😂
As a child of the 60-70’s I remember this song very well. Still have the original 45 I bought for probably 79¢ at the local 5 $ 10 store. I can’t be the only one who always heard “Give me The Beach Boys instead of The Beat Boys”.
There have been several covers of Drift Away, but none compare to Dobie Gray's version, and it will always be his song imo. Dobie sings it like he means it. Much like Whitney Houston had a big hit with I Will Always Love You, but as much as I love Whitney's voice, that will always be Dolly Parton's song, and no other version compares to hers. And she really did mean it. The '70s had a lot of great sing-alongs. Dancing in the Moonlight (King Harvest) comes to mind. Also We Will Rock You (Queen), Don't Stop Believin' (Journey), I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor), American Pie (Don McLean), Come Sail Away (Styx), a bunch of Fleetwood Mac songs, a bunch of ELO songs, it goes on and on. But Drift Away is definitely *at least* top 5.
Like you, this was one of my Dad’s favorites. Windows down, he’d crank the radio and step on the gas. He’d sing along loudly, feeling so free for that 3 minutes and 57 seconds! Dobie Gray. 'Drift Away' and 'The In Crowd' were his two minor hits in the UK, in 1973 and 1965 respectively. Then in 1974 Bryan Ferry (of Roxy Music fame) had a top 20 hit with 'The In Crowd'. Dobie Gray was very much underrated, sadly no longer with us.

That song puts me back in time to a summer day on the highway in my father's car. The family was on vacation and we didn't have air conditioners in most cars so we drove with all the windows down. The am radio was cranked to hear it above the sound of the wind. Still love this song.😊

As a kid growing up in the early 70s, I have a soft spot for this song in my heart. To this day, it remains one of my all time favorite singles. For some strange reason, everytime I think of this song, I think about Ain't No Sunshine and I Can See Clearly Now. I don't understand why, but to me these three songs should be played together. @Mic Norton remember it quite well, both the Paperlace version and the Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods version. And, of course who could resist Billy Preston? Will it go round in circles and Nothing From Nothing, were everywhere in the early 70s.

I loved that song and singer ever since the first time I heard it. And , still do to this day. It sends chills thru me when I hear it. No way could it have ever found a better voice to bring it to life. Match made in heaven , song and voice ! Wow , still one of the greatest songs , in my mind. Loved hearing it right now ! And I will love it tomorrow and always. It just touched my soul , still does.

It was this song that started me into playing music. The bass really was the attraction of the low frequencies that you could feel. In less than a year I had a bass and could play Drift Away. I am also 62 now and that song is one that will resonate with me forever.
I LOVED this song as a a very young child when it first came out. I won't go into why other than to say my childhood was not very good, and it helped me to learn how to 'drift away' in the music on the radio.
I’ve always loved Drift Away. When it came on the radio not long ago again, I was confused. I told my kid that it was a remake. He loves it too! I jumped online and found Gray’s version which is of course the one I loved in the 70’s. Connecting generations!
My dad was the same way. Him and my mom had divorced when I was a baby and he would see us on the weekends. The first thing he would do is turn on the radio and start listening to old songs. I would get mad because I wanted to play with my friends and he would say "No just sit here and listen to this with me". This has become one of my favorite memories of him. Just chilling all day listening to music.
Besides a great song and Dobie Gray version, this is such a wonderful story-a reminder that we can give up on a dream, but sometimes perseverance and luck can still be yours.

I was going through a pretty depressing time in 73 and when this song came on the radio, I also cranked it up and sang along as loud as I could. It really did touch my soul.
Omg, this song always gives me goosebumps and I drift away into it. I fell in love with it as a kid sitting in the back seat and it captures me every time I hear or think about it.

Ooh my gosh this song means so much to me, I even have it as my ring tone. My father played this song so much when I was young. Then when he died my sister and I were sitting in the car in his funeral entrouge when this song came on the radio. We all sang along and remembered our dad. Summer days in the park and winter nights listening to this whilst we drifted off to sleep. It was so unexpected because we were in Kenya and the radio kept going off and on but during that song it played all the way. My sister and I were convinced it was a message from him. 2015 my sister died and I was so shocked to see my sister chose that song at her funeral. I cried so much because I knew that was her message to me and my brother. Thank you for explaining the origins because so many people never remember it. Thank you.
There's nothing like a song that just always makes you feel good. Whether it makes a gloomy day brighter or a good day even better, Drift Away will always be one of those rare feel good songs

What up Prof! I absolutely love the in-depth research you do on artists, who people think they just came out of nowhere, recorded a hit and then wandered back out of the spotlight. When in reality most of these artists have paid their dues many a year, grinding and working hard on the road. It seems most of them as well have had other songs released other than the one hit they're known for. Then afterwards go back to recording and touring even if they don't have another hit. I just want to give a shout-out to all of the "blue collar" musicians working their ass off out there!
When I first got Pandora I loved reading the biographies of musicians, it shed light onto their struggles to share their gift. In the Country genre it is amazing how many came from broken homes, especially in the 20s-50s when divorce was so much less accepted.
I remember the chills Dobie created when he belted this song at an outdoor concert in Nashville.
He opened with a masterful rendition of “Who is That Mannnnnnnn” and had us in his hands for his entire set.
Of course, Drift Away was the climax.
20 minute sets have come and gone in my mind and heart - but this one still chills me!
I was 11 years old in 1973. I remember being at my grandmas house, in the Summer, in her living room, all by myself playing. The stereo was always on and the music was set to a station that that played everything from rock to country and pop. Three songs I remember distinctly were The Doors, Light My Fire, Donna Fargo's "The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA, and Drift Away. The station played Drift way at the top of the hour, every hour, everyday, for that Summer, and I never got tired of it. "You know a melody can move me" is no lie.
Definitely one of my most favorite songs. When I hear it, I really do “drift away” to a different place, another time or an alternate reality for 3:57. I loved both Dobie Grey’s solo version and the duet with Kracker equally. Simply a masterpiece.
Memories! You had to listen to this song with windows rolled down and volume turned up and singing as loud as you can. Summertime weather was the best times with rock n roll and your radio!

I was 10 years old in 1990, and my sisters and I were at our cousins place waiting for our father. We decided to play a game of Pictionary, my sister was up first and right as she started I belted out the line "I wanna get lost in your rock and roll" and she stops me because her clue answer was rock. Her very next turn I burst into "Turn that radio up for that sweet sound" and her word was radio. She was so mad because she didn't get to draw anything. That's the day I was banned from singing while playing board games with my family 😂😂
As a child of the 60-70’s I remember this song very well. Still have the original 45 I bought for probably 79¢ at the local 5 $ 10 store. I can’t be the only one who always heard “Give me The Beach Boys instead of The Beat Boys”.

There have been several covers of Drift Away, but none compare to Dobie Gray's version, and it will always be his song imo. Dobie sings it like he means it.
Much like Whitney Houston had a big hit with I Will Always Love You, but as much as I love Whitney's voice, that will always be Dolly Parton's song, and no other version compares to hers. And she really did mean it.
The '70s had a lot of great sing-alongs. Dancing in the Moonlight (King Harvest) comes to mind. Also We Will Rock You (Queen), Don't Stop Believin' (Journey), I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor), American Pie (Don McLean), Come Sail Away (Styx), a bunch of Fleetwood Mac songs, a bunch of ELO songs, it goes on and on. But Drift Away is definitely *at least* top 5.

Like you, this was one of my Dad’s favorites. Windows down, he’d crank the radio and step on the gas. He’d sing along loudly, feeling so free for that 3 minutes and 57 seconds! It was fun to watch him and I understood the power of this song more as I got older. Miss you Dad! Thank you Mentor & Grey for the memories.
There are many times I will bring this song up on my drive into work. It makes the miles melt away and leaves me feeling like I am just floating. The music and the vocals transport me to another world.

The decision to record with the Nashville session players was a master stroke. They really added so much to this tune, especially Reggie Young's signature intro lick, and this very song features prominently in Gil Baker's documentary "Session Men" which was filmed a few years ago. Thanks, Adam!
Dobie Gray. 'Drift Away' and 'The In Crowd' were his two minor hits in the UK, in 1973 and 1965 respectively. Then in 1974 Bryan Ferry (of Roxy Music fame) had a top 20 hit with 'The In Crowd'. Dobie Gray was very much underrated, sadly no longer with us.

This song has always been a favorite of mine. Dobie did it justice and noone has ever been able to bring it to life like Dobie. Mentor wrote a classic and I for one thank him for that. This song brings a calming feeling when I'm wound tight. Thank you Mentor and Dobie!

That song puts me back in time to a summer day on the highway in my father's car. The family was on vacation and we didn't have air conditioners in most cars so we drove with all the windows down. The am radio was cranked to hear it above the sound of the wind. Still love this song.😊
