Just a BEAUTIFUL Example of Cool Calm & Collected.....under an Extreme & Dire Situation & Circumstances
Semper fi marine, rest in peace.

I met Artimus a few years ago working back stage, and he is such a gentleman, he was carrying his own gear and setting things up, he really works hard to bring the music to everyone. At the first break me and a friend asked him about the crash and he still misses the ppl he lost that day. He really is a prince of a fellow.
Why would you ask him about that? Or be surprised he srtill missed those people.. JFC
@@Nunya-77 big coconuts to bring up that 🙄
Really why!!!
Do you know that he changed his story a few times over the years about the crash? The main one was that he went onto to say that he was shot by a property owner that him and two others came up on whilst looking for help. I have researched to see if this is true or not but you don’t need to search any further than this interview. He says nothing of being shot or even shot at. In fact, he stated that he didn’t sustain any broken bones. Not even a fracture. He’s one truly lucky man.
@@Stormcloud32Artie suffers from PTSD from Vietnam AND the crash. If you don't know what that does to you, don't judge. My brother and I were almost murdered by our stepfather in 1971. We talked about it a lot. Our memories were completely different, except I remember my brother, at 11 years old, shot and killed the SOB.
RIP my brother, my hero.
Crazy how he was actually able to compose himself and talk about this.
Lynyrd Skynyrd died that day but THEIR music lives on …
The greatest American rock band ever.

Artimus Pyle is an absolute top notch, class-A gentleman and although this had to be a difficult interview for him, he spoke absolute truth I believe and gave so much credit to the people in and around the crash area. When he realized he survived, going for help for his friends and band mates was his mission and he accomplished this mission. Artimus Pyle, you sir are a fine gentleman!
I agree. There was probably no one else that could have done that. If not for him getting help there may have been other losses.
the plane crash itself whilst Pyle 18:41 went looking for help, there were also two coastguard helicopters in that area on a training mission and located 18:41 the crash site with a big spotlight and had found the crash site shortly after the plane went down. First responders and volunteers that lived in the area where they went down were dispatched to the scene because they saw the plane just moments before it crashed running on one engine and there’s are other interviews of people who saw the general direction where it was going down and where it went down so people on the ground already knew that a plane had gone down that night. It wasn’t a 5 mile trek either. The plane went down right behind Mr Easleys property and his testimony is proof that they had people on the scene within minutes of the crash and started pulling survivors out, getting the most serious injured on their way asap. Mr Easleys account of the events of that evening is probably the most accurate by any of the first responders and or volunteers.
I can't imagine reliving and answering these questions only four days after the crash...
I believe his Marine Corps training kicked in and also attributed to his survival skills helped save the others. I love Artimus and this interview confirms what I have believed about the rescue all these years later. It truly is a miracle he survived
I don't agree.
@@Michael-no6jw no one cares

@rockyclick371 I do. It would be interesting to see why this person disagrees. There are many interesting and conflicting stories that happened that tragic night. I'm still learning about this event, and all opinions are welcome. A great discussion could be had without all the nastiness.
@@Michael-no6jw why don't you agree? Just asking.
One of the greatest drummers of all time. Rock on Artimus.❤

I had recently bought "street survivors" and I was so saddened by this terrible tragedy. The lyrics and songs will never be duplicated. Absolutely perfect group .
Thats my favorite Skynyrd album..
I did too. It's a reprint. I've been trying to find the original.
@@roxannemoser good luck finding the original cover but like a 59 Gibson les paul they are out there but hard to find and you better have at least $250,000. to make an offer.try

What about the part in Street Survivor's where Artimus was was that BS? He said nothing about it here. And I will say never heard anything of the sort until this movie...
That he was shot? ...
So many stories surrounding this. I believe Artimus was a hero.
I wonder if the parents of the underaged girl he was banging would agree... 🤔🤔🤔
Absolutely a hero. If he could've spent some time in the cockpit, he probably could've prevented the co-pilot from dumping the fuel and transferred it properly and the plane could've landed and nobody would've died.
Absolutely
I think the interviewer did a really good job with such a recent raw event. The way he gently coaxed out threads of the story from Artemis was class. And that Artemis was able to be able to think clearly and recall the tragic events. He sounds like a very intelligent bloke. A mate of my Dad introduced me to LS, he was an Australian Vietnam Vet, he told me about the accident and that the drummer was a Marine/Special Forces?? My Dads mate was SAS and I think he respected how Artemis Assessed the situation helped his mates, and got out and searched for help for his mates. I think he saw that as what you’d do in war. I dig hearing his stories and really appreciate the music he introduced me too. I miss him, so does my old man too, it’s hard losing your best mate, I’ve had it happen to me, you don’t get over it. Hearing Artemis talking about losing his mates is sad to hear. Even all these years later. I really like hearing stories from people who know or have met him, and how cool and fairdinkum he sounds. That adds to my appreciation of him and LS. Stay safe, cheers from Australia
Good on Artimus. He has taken a lot of slack and he was only one who never lost consciousness and he did not throw th people who rescued them under the bus.
He’s probably the most iconic looking guy along with Ronnie. Just a great representation of the 70’s style era.. clearly the man’s in shock and dealing with it in his own way possible here though. I think hes a tough tough guy, really done beyond what most people I’d imagine could do in such a fatal accident. Really interesting to listen to this after so long and read so many other accounts given years and years later. You can truly analyse and see the passage of time and how it can mend and break. It’s crucial to look after mental health at the end of the day, and I think he’s done an excellent job to be one of the few survivors from something so horrific.
They were coming to play for us in Baton Rouge. They crashed about :45 minutes or so from my house. I few days before my 17th birthday and the worse birthday I have ever had. This is the first time to here this interview. Year's after they came back to Baton Rouge the first show after. I have seen them 12 different times, a few times before the crash. Lynyrd Skynyrd, and everyone we lost,, will never die. Free Bird is always going to fly. Tomorrow I will be 62, and this hurts more now. Stevie Ray, Jim Croce, if only all of the ones we lost could have lived long as B.B.King, Busy Guy, how much more would they have done for music and us. Geaux Skynyrd 💪🙏❤️👍✌️🤠
They crashed on my 17th birthday. October 20, 1977
@@joe7346 And my 18th birthday!
I hear ya, I’m 62 as well. Gary Rossinton just joined his friends. Can you imagine what a musical reunion is going on right now? Rock in Peace Gary & everyone else there!
Love this band and so sorry about this tragedy
That DJ or whatever is very respectful and a great interviewer
Man what a brutal brutal passage in rock history
And they did return as Lynyrd Skynyrd. Their first concert was in Jacksonville, Florida and I was there. It was magical !!!!
Most (not Pyle) returned first as Rossington Collins band
I hope to catch a concert one day. Free Bird is my driving song when I’m on the road. I know people wonder if I’m having some kind of fit when my hand is waving out the window and I’m dancing in my seat.
they have not been Lynyrd Skynyrd since Oct 20 1977.
Artimus was supposed to play with the Rossington-Collins band, but was involved in a motorcycle accident that broke his leg. So, he opted out & told them not to wait,..and to find another drummer!
We thank him for his service.
I've always loved this guy. He speaks so genuinely. Nothing but respect for the locals who save his band and friends. They used to say, if you want the truth, ask a Marine, so I suppose that's a true statement
I hear what you're saying and I agree. Unfortunately though there are some in that site area of the crash who love to belittle him. So sad.
The only thing I could think about thru this interview was how much I felt for Artimus having to relive everything and tell the public. It was very uncomfortable and exploitive. God Bless you Artimus. You have my love and respect. 💯🙏💓
Wow, what a great guy! I'm so impressed with him in this interview!
So glad ya'll kept playing because I have been to several of your concerts and loved them
Artimus seems like he's got a good head on his shoulders.
Thank you for keeping 904 alive
Except for me being a Christian conservative and he being a self-described liberal, I really enjoy hearing him speak with honesty and his drumming is simply the best!!! Thanks Artimus Pyle for all the great years and carrying on the Skynyrd legacy!!!!!
Incredible interview.
Thank you for uploading this great interview
I’m so glad I stumbled across this!! I didn’t know this interview existed…Takes me back to this horrific accident!! RIP 💔💔💔
Gary had a vision of Dean saving his life. Dean was all ready dead. I believe he saw Dean saving him in a vision. It was Artimus though that really saved him. Gary isn't lying it's just the way he saw it happen.
When i was 14 discovered their music and when i was 16 i learned about the crash. Such a tragedy 😢 💔
I saw them in Greenville SC the night before the plane crash. Nazareth was their opening act, although they weren't touring together. I don't know who was going to open up for them in Baton Rouge La. They may not even have a opening act at all shows.
Wow. Dude, u got to see Skynrd's LAST concert.
How lucky are you? My friend got to see Tom Petty @ the Hollywood Bowl 3 days b4 he died, his final performance as well.
I said the sam thing to her, 'how lucky r u??' :)
@@user-yz3et4lq9y My friend was at Stevie Ray Vaughn's last show. Stevie died in a helicopter crash leaving the show. 😥
Im pretty sure the Dingos were the opening act in Greenville 😂
Story version 1 - not getting shot - take 1
Only 30+ more versions from him to go over the years.
Artimus was a major force in the bands success
Gave that band the exact back beat it needed
Bob Burns laid the foundation Artimus took over the throne added his own touch
WELL SAID Sir!
I was 9 years old when this happened and it’s still sad 😢
I was 20 years old when this happened
I was 9 too. But I didn't get into them until I was around 15.
He was a beautiful man. Talk about a survivor.
What a brave man.....stay clean
Garbage in my system to keep me from thinking clearly was a statement of being able to get help. The vegetarian and good health were being stated as reasons, not necessarily that he survived. But rather that he was strong and fit and able to seek help for his friends rather than being unhealthy to begin with, and not being altered helped him to try to help them. There's nothing wrong with him being healthy and sober.
Sincerely, a major carnivore, who doesn't mind to smoke a little smoke and drink a little drink.
One thing you never forget is your Marine Corp training. It's what helped Artimus stay calm and able to think.
RIP to those lives lost
Ronnie, Steve, Cassie, the pilots, and engineers et al
Artimis is a class act and was throughout this terrible tragedy. Despite his inner sorrow, his inherent fortitude, persevered to help his friends as best he could. I recently watched a Mike Huckabee clip from October 2023. He is still distraught over the events of that October night. A tough cross to carry for nearly 50 years. May God Bless you Artimus, as well as all those lives lost.
Pretty heavy questions for someone who just survived a plane crash that took so many friends, let alone his band.
This guy was a hero in this thing for sure!
The respect and love for this band has carried forward to the new LS. And they are carrying the torch admirably.
I saw Skynyrd 3 months before the plane crash, in Oakland CA at Day On the Green. They were BURNING. So hard to see them have to go through this
Bless your heart for going to get help!
American Courage!
Artimus is so articulate and talented, it's an absolute travesty to see him homeless and struggling as a senior. Sad world that can allow this to happen.
what? is this true wtf??
@@slabhead yeah man. There's a documentary about him. Came out several years ago.
He’s on tour right now though??
He's not homeless
I don't think he's broke and homeless, believe me he's not homeless, the guy is making money and probably more than one place to live to.
Rock star and Marine.
That man is strong
Wow, a friend of mine Steve Tullus in Florida knows Artemis.
been a fan since that night. I was 8 and know many first responders and landowners where that happened
God bless you all and we love you💞⚘🌻
I think the survivors or street survivors would of been a awesome a emotional name that had a sentimental meaning ! Would been a killer name for the continuation of the band !
Artimus is really flexible and tough
I think God has blessed him richly. I've nothing but respect for this humble beautiful soul.
That was so interesting!
Such a sad day in music, Forever a ture red white and blue Skynyrd fan
5:14 Artimus refers to the co-pilot (William John Gray Jr.) as "John".
Rossington has said some mean and derogatory things about Artimus and his movements after the crash, calling him a coward, hiding behind a tree and so forth. I don't believe a word of it.
Hiding behind a tree? Seems rather odd. I don't by it either.
Seems like he's more of a hero seeing he went to get help.
Rossington actually said that he thought Pyle ran away from the plane to save himself because he probably thought it was going to blow up,not because he was trying to go get help.He made these statements to a reporter for VH1 and they appeared in a documentary about Lynyrd Skynyrd called "UnCivil War".The reporter(Jake Tapper) really goaded Rossington into saying what he said,he went from one member to the next stirring up trouble the whole documentary.
@@davidh6818 Nah, by the time that one came out, things had already been "uncivil" for a while.
He says... "The Co=Pilot John". Correct me, if I am wrong, I thought, the Co-Pilot's name was William Grey and the Pilot's name was Walter McCreary?...
I remember how saddened I was when I had heard LYNYRD SKYNYRD had crashed. I live in Brookhaven, Ms. About 20 north of McComb. They park the wreckage in Brookhaven right off 51 south . I visited LYNYRD SKYNYRD plane multiple times on different occasions bc I just could not believe this had happened sobbing & heartbroken over the love of a group 1 of the best bands EVER !!! It’s was so hard to try and wrap my head around something so horrific !!! There plane sitting in Brookhaven, Ms. Not Just made it final but made it real…. ✈️ RIP LYNYRD SKYNYRD❣️
I didn't know that, my mom lived in Brookhaven. You just don't hear that city name often
Wow this is wild ☎️ 4 Days after the crash…. Listen to the first question this clown asks!!!!
I was floored at how rude that interviewer was.
Bones sticking out where they shouldn't be but I didn't break one bone?
probably the flesh was abrased off his ribs.
That seems to be a very odd statement at 12:24 because he was shot by a farmer's 19 year-old son, when he was trying to get some help after the crash.
very touching!!!!!!
He was a handsome dude 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Artimus I love u and God bless u....R.I.P.
Ive always thought Artemus was a great drummer and a great man. Hes one of my favorite musicans.
Is he still on the offender registry?
He was a cutie pie back then and he's still a cutie pie to this day. I still have a little crush on him.
Wow,,,,,
Honest and unedited
Just a simple explanation by a regular guy mixed with exceptional humans ,,,, in a tragic/Historical moment
to bring such clarity and share what great humans helped his band/friends in such a chaotic moment
Shows such a (Bond) of spirits few have the privilege of experiencing …………… some say “Life is short”
I say “Life is Long”
Especially when those you Love leave before you 🙏.
Regular guy? The dude was a marine special force member, knew how to fly planes, played with The Marshall Tucker band, played with Lynard Skynerd, toured all over the word. Survived a crazy plane crash, dislodged himself and walked 2 miles in the dark swamps to get help, led them backto the crash, and Is the last alive. He is nothing but the opposite of Regular
God Bless you Artimus freebird brother 😊
A fabulous human being
Why is he on the seks offender registry?
wow .som e of the questions the radio guy asked felt a bit pressed. Artimus got a bad rap later down the road, heard this & heard that but cant help but respect him as a good person & a good drummer. And the almost last stetment he made is exactly how I feel. Lynyrd Skynyrd died in that planecrash . its a pure sad tragedy.
When you left I thought you was a coward but you actually a hero man
To cool for school that gentlemen only being 29 years old look at 29 year old people now not saying all 29 can't compare but like he said his lively hood military having a clear clean mind shows why he pulled through this horrible accident
Good interview. He doesn't mention about any others going with him to get help although some interviews supposedly 2 others did so whether or not they did who knows.
Gene s account is the most accurate but Artimus provides more details. They lowered the landing gear, which was a mistake that caught the top of the trees.
there was such a rift among the surviving members after the crash...they reunited except artimus (well, a temp. stint w/them)...they let artimus go b/c his playing wasn't allegedly up to par...artimus was a great drummer and still is...some harsh things were said back and forth among the survivors...I found artimus to be the most credible and gary the least (even ronnie confided to gene odom the same sentiment)...I mean, artimus has been and still is holistically the healthiest of all the members, so it just doesn't seem to figure in to his personality to hurl and emit such negativity...artimus loved these guys...he's a spiritual being...he has purified his body and soul, i.e., he has no guile...he's the type of guy I would love to have as a neighbor.
ALWAYS FAITHFUL 🤠🙏🇬🇧❤🇺🇲

Artimus I'm the one that brought Bob burns back to Jacksonville from Montana. I should tell the story so if if anyone wants to here the story it should be told. Contact me through this comment.
Do tell do tell
Don't matter - Goober Van Zandt didn't have long to live. Saw him in Ann Arbor in 1976, reeling around sucking from a bottle of JD, drunk already when they took the stage opening for Santana on a hot, sunny day just after noon.
Tell it on here then
Gary, we can put your story on this page if you'd like. We'd love to hear it Sir!
He is lucky he got out so cleanly. Drummer reflexes probably helped a bit.
Free birds in Heaven are waiting for this beautiful spirit.
There is way more to this story than they are saying, like the drummers story changes and did you know that the show they were flying to was going to be the last one for the upper management as Ronnie was starting his own everything and was cutting all the blood suckers out and then bam he died and what's sad is the whole band went along with it all for the money.
What an absolute stupid opening question? Knowing there were fatalities?
Now, compare this interview to what he says now ? This is fresh, 4 days old not a lot of drugs and booze (maybe). What are the main differences between vintage version and something more modern ? Are they about the same or two very different tales ?
The very first photo of Artimus in this interview im watching on RUclips Artimus is sitting in a vehicle it looks like Ronnie is in the back seat you can see the tip of Ronnies hat look closely the driver is unknown you can see the driver passing a joint back to Ronnie and Artimus looks stoned.
This interview with Artimus sound pretty much right. I'll like to add this . Artimus walked out of the woods with 2 others: Ken Paden and Marc Frank. I was the first at the crash site
Wow insensitive interviewer.
Artemis is an awesome guy everybody who meets him loves him but he was smoking funny cigarettes all the time back then
Ronnie Cassie Steve Dean He never mentions Dean.
HIS NAME SOUNDS LIKE A PHRASE…
“THERE’S QUITE AN ARTEMOUS PILE OVER THERE…”
....Old skool Vegan...🤘
Don't misunderstand me, I realize it ain't easy to take
But you been hidin', and I been ridin' like the wind to find you..
" Were your injuries of a serious nature or relatively light as opposed to everyone else on the plane?"... The most idiotic question of the century.
Artemus Pyle is a man of tremendous inner strength and faith to be able to talk about the crash so soon afterwards.
I'll say!
I was a freshman in HS, hanging out with friends when we heard the news. Artemus has taken a lot of attacks, but here he is, less than 4 full days after it happened, giving a composed interview, NOT playing the Hero. The young man was still in shock. You could hear it & hear his voice start to crack in places. He had tremendous respect for Ronnie, & loved his friends. He did what needed to be done, a true Marine. He ran and found help. Then he led them back. That is what Heroes do, Now Artemus is the last crash survivor, still trying to do the right thing, and make Ronnie proud. God Bless him, long live LS !!!
Exactly! I felt the same way. Gary talked a lot of shit about him and he should have been in the band.
Me too...I graduated in 1977 & just saw them live in 1976...such a tragic loss...so many have perri ished in aircraft...
Respect for Ronnie? That’s a new one
@@Monkforilla well if you didn't respect him you better fucken fear he cuz he would cut you as soon as f****** look at you 😂
@in2livinit... Leslie Hawkins is still alive. As are several of the 26 people that were on that plane that day.
Artimus and Ed were the mature ones in the band.
Ed was already gone by the time the plane crashed. Steve Gaines took his place.
This guy was a United States Marine during the Vietnam War and was in probably imo one of the worst environments in history to fight in.
