It's amazing to see how he puts everybody on a pedestal and he without question has respect for everybody regardless what they think of him.
What a humble man who truly loved everybody. And he'll always have a place in our hearts.

And if you don't have solid evidence to despute whatever it is you think he lies about then just leave him alone. The man went through hell. He went down in a raggedy ass plane and seen his friends dead/dying before his eyes. Artimus is a icon and one helluva drummer! Chill out.

I love Artimus Pyle. Some question his memories of specific happenings: I do not care about that. He's all heart.
I met Artimus Pyle around 2003 and he told me and 2 of my buddies about the plane crash. He talked to us for about 45 minutes like he'd known us forever. Such a down to earth guy and awesome person. I still can't believe I have talked to someone that was in that plane that horrible day. God bless you Artimus!

I'm not sure if I'd go that far. Hal Blaine and Keith Moon are the greatest rock drummers of all time.
So underrated
Stunning, even after all these years of documentaries, interviews and stories, Artimus beats the drum and we still cry.
Artimus is a character but I like him. He feels a lot as a person. He wears his heart on his sleeve. You definitely wouldn't have to worry about not knowing what he's thinking or how he emotionally feels about something. That's very kind of him how much compassion he has for the original drummer.
That’s a good summation of my view of Mr. Pyle. I don’t know him but seen him interviewed many times. His sincerity is off the charts.
Artimus's humility is something rarely seen anywhere by anyone. Just nothing but respect for him as a musician and man.
I agree, but his recounting of the crash sequence is 90% bullshit.
@@mben-david2064I honestly think Arimus has a mental block from the crash where he truly beleives Ronnie did that walkin' around on the plane. I don't wanna throw stones at anyone from that crash or how they remember it. They all suffered great loss , losing some of thier friends and physical ailments, not to mention financial. But I do agree Artemis is a great drummer and humble man. One of the only ones left.

My girlfriend and I recently spent 2 weeks traveling the Deep South. Realizing we were so close to the Lynyrd Skynyrd Memorial while traveling thru Mississippi we stopped there. By total luck, Gene Odum was there signing autographs and telling a few stories. The memorial is very well maintained,....and respectful. It is NOT at the exact spot of the crash,...as that is on private property and has a strict no-trespassing policy(except for specific occasions). As a huge fan of the band, I had a lot of questions I would have liked to ask Gene Odum,....however,...to be respectful of his time,....and knowing that he has probably answered the same questions so many times,..I just shook his hand,....bought his book that he signed,....and he graciously took a picture of me and my girlfriend in front of the memorial.
Wow, Artimus has had a very interesting and eventful career and life. Thanks Joe and Artimus.
BTW Joe...My brother Jimmy Matejek ...Lives in Nashville... So, Don and Wanda Matejek...Would sure want to meet you, and the musuem!
I understand I don't know everyone involved nor their character but.. people remember things differently. Doesn't mean they're "lying". Just like you can have two children. Same parents.. same home. But vastly different childhoods. Let people speak their peace. I loved the movie. Thank you for sharing your story Artimus and everyone else involved in the saddest day in music history.

Great interview. I have friends who moved from the Detroit area to Asheville, North Carolina a few years ago and they live near a bar where Artimus's band played (maybe still plays) sometimes. It might even be his bar, I forget. They got to know him a little bit and love the guy. Back in the summer of 76 four of us got tickets to see Skynyrd at Pine Knob, not too far from Detroit, We were less than 20 rows from the stage. I only knew the songs that were played on the radio and had no idea what to expect overall. They started off with 'Workin' For MCA' and I was blown away immediately. I was a fan for life. They were one of my favorite bands after that show. I was lucky enough to see them again that November at Ford Auditorium in Detroit. I've seen The Who, Zeppelin, Ten Years After, Johnny Winter, The Allman Brothers, etc, and Skynyrd's shows were right up there with any of them. A big group of us had tickets to see them at Cobo Arena in Detroit in June of 77, really great main floor seats. The show was postponed until October 31st, Halloween night. Mark Farner was supposed to open. Back then as a teenager I really had great anticipation for concerts, and we had been waiting almost six months. The show was a week and a half away when we heard the terrible news from some friends the night of the crash. What a terrible tragedy, but their music will live on forever. RIP Ronnie, Cassie and Steve. Thanks for the incredible music. Music has been a huge part of my life since I was a little kid and they have helped enrich my life. I'm so thankful I got to see those two shows back in 76. Great memories. Thanks for posting this.
Loved your story. I feel the same way about music. Very fortunate to have grown up during the best era ( in my opinion) of rock and roll ever.
@@jimmyb1559 For me the mid 60's to mid 70's were amazing. Not that there hasn't been lots of great stuff since, but to me that era will never be matched. From one Jim B to another. :)

This man is a class act and a survivor…and I’m happy to say…he’s from my hometown…Louisville, KY.
Oh man, I sold a set of Ludwigs a couple summers back, that were finished in a kinda tiger stripe blue. About a month later, I came across a picture from 1972 or so, with Bob Burns playing a set identical to them. Great job as usual Joe, thanks Artimus for sharing with us all.

Back in the late eighties, I played a biker gig in the Florida Keys and Artimus sat in on a few tunes. At least that's how he was introduced and it looked like him... and he was a good player! It really doesn't matter since I was thrilled just to be playing🥴.

My Favorite Band was Lynard. Skynard. When that plain went down every one that loved that Band of Brothers and Sisters lost a peace of their life. It’s still sad to this day. Rest in peace Brothers and Sisters. Of that great Band.

Hi Jimmy…. You are very kind and I truly appreciate your supporting our channel too. I’m not a interviewer by most standards. I have no background in media at all. I’ve just always been interested in how things happened that have a impact on my life. Music has for as long as I can remember been at the top of that list next to just the wonder of this God given life we share itself. As a baby boomer I truly believe that the music that developed during my lifetime…. especially during the 60’s and 70’s.. due to all the developments that occurred during that same period of time like space travel, car designs, of course television, medicine, Vietnam, civil rights movement, King and Kennedy assassinations lead to the greatest period of music ever created. Music has been the one constant thing in my life and learning how it happened from those who were there and created it is a passion. I never have a list of questions. I just want to have a conversation with them and let it take us where they want to go. To often people who interview others don’t listen to the person they are interviewing. They cut them off in the middle of a great story just so they can ask their next question on the list and miss the very answers they asked about. Maybe that’s what you mean. Our shows are more like conversations than question and answers. Anyway thank you again for your support and kind comments….. best, Joe

I am the youngest of 10 children so I grew up hearing experiencing music from the big band era that the oldest in my family listened to. Plus classical, country, and so on. Outstanding person? You've got to be joking,or your standards are very low-Pyle is a convicted Secks Offender(misspelling intentional) in the state of Florida so he's not what most would consider an"outstanding person".

I have never described a man this way but I’ve heard other men do it. That said, if I ever did, I would say Artimus is a sweet man. I could sit and listen to him for hours.

I was 16 and was there When they recorded their live album One More From The Road. At the Fabulous Fox , Atlanta on July 8th 1976. the second night of three performances.
Such a gracious gentleman. One of those guys I hope I can meet and thank for the music

Watch his tale on it in his movie. It is supposed to be his perspective but there are things that are flat out lies. I have seen him contradict himself in interviews.
Not Lil details but very important things.
He described how he went to get help after crash which he did but it was documented there were 3 men who walled out of the swamp. Artimus, Ken Peden & Mark Frank. One interviewer even said something to effect of 2 crew guys were also with you & he replies they weren't there.
He relates whole story abt how as plane is going down , Ronnie sought him our & did the bro shake & saiove you brother. Very touching except it is documented Ronnie was up front passed out from 2 sleeping pills gave him, he was kind laying under a table that Gary, Allen, Steve, Cassie ; Dean were sitting so he wasn't blocking the aisle. Gene Odom had to pull him up & shove into his seat, he was out of it, 1/2 asleep & thought Gene was messing with him. Common knowledge so he couldn't have went to back of any where Artimus was at all.
I have watched abt every interview he has done , he seems sincere but I can't believe award he says

I saw the movie it was great
It's crazy how he survived the crash only to get shot by a farmer who thought he was an escaped criminal when he was just trying to get help for the others still stuck in the plane crash.
Can you imagine if Steve Gains had lived.The day the music died for real All of 'em

Ronnie is the one, I've known them since they were playing nightclubs, and a close friend was their road manager. 🎶

Everyone but you knows Ronnie said all about, "if it's your time to die it's your time."
And then RONNIE proceeded to tell those that bought their commercial tickets already," if you use those tickets your out of the Band."
You also must not know, Artimus argued with Ronnie about the plane. He was a marine pilot.
He KNEW.
You must be the last one to know.

Watching this for the first time after hearing about Gary Rossington's death. Artimus is now probably the last original member alive. Was lucky enough to see his band in concert 2012. Great interview by the way.

Did Bob ever end up in the HOF? He absolutely should be in there. I wouldn't be surprised if he still hasn't been. We are, after all, talking about the same exact HOF who nominated and entered nwa into their hall, yet, have seen bands like J geils, get nominated over 4 times resulting in them being turned down every single time. Artemis is a good drummer. The past is gone. Let's appreciate those who are still with us and honor them for what they've given us. Hope you stay safe and well friend. Cheers.

I know they’re not known as big rockers , but they had a very long and distinguished career that varied widely through the years. And worked with many of the great innovators of the time.

I've had a burning question in my head for the last 45+ years. I'm hoping someone out there can help me with. It's a little long, it's about something I saw at Skynyrds second to last show, Oct 18th 1977 at the Lakeland Civic Center, Lakeland, Fl. I think there was bad blood between Gary Rossington and Artimus Pyle, even before the crash. In the middle of a song that night, Artimus kicked his drum kit over and he and Gary got in a shouting match. The band kept playing, all the while the roadies were putting the drum kit back together and they all finished the song and the rest of the set. All of these years I have wondered what went on that night. I tried my best to get in touch Artimus, but never heard back from him. I guess I will never know what it was about or why, at least not in this lifetime. I have also posted this story on several different posts and interviews without reply, and I've seen quite a few. Maybe it's not a big deal, I've heard they could be quite explosive while writing or practicing, just not on stage. Any insight into what went on that night would be much appreciated. I know it's a long shot. Thanks.
Artimus is and was a health nut. At the time, Gary was doing quaaludes and other pills. He and Artimus butted heads for years, and still do. Artimus thinks Gary is a control freak and he thinks Judy is a money grubber. Truthfully, I don't think he's that far off. He keeps the peace though.
