Million dollar band in a two dollar airplane....What could have been, what great music we were robbed of.
Tightwad manager flew first class commercial.. surprised said man wasnt hounded more..
Peter Rudge!!!
but what great music we got! Jah Bless!
It was an airplane Aerosmith had been using before LS got it. They were delayed by it and also had a few close calls with the convair. Between what you alluded to combined with pilot error/ inexperience, it was definitely a ticking time bomb.
@@RResidentAlienNN I don't believe Aerosmith ever used that plane. They did look at it, but never used it.
Artimus ,thank you ! And musician hall of Fame for this 3 part interview! What I learned from this interview live Life! Joe at the 40th APB anniversary concert a group of fans presented a wedding type ring made from the plane wreck and his eyes lid up! The group used mine field equipment found a PC! Artimus the Street Survivor! RVZ smiling at you!
Artimus is cool. Good to see him still surviving and healthy. Thanx for all the great playing!
You could see it was hard for Artimus to tell the difficult parts of the crash .
Semper Fi Marine !
Great job, Joe. Your gift of letting the teller tell their story is a gift to us that are listening and watching.
A plug for the original recordings from Muscle Shoals - The "First and Last" cd is a must have for fans of one of the greatest bands ever!.
Those swampers interviews you did are awesome, and led me to that unbelievable record.
Peace ☮️
Artimus thanks for being part of Joe’s best interview yet. Hope Joe will have you back, I believe you have more great stories to share.
Can’t say it enough.. Amazing Interview!! Thank you Lord for giving us Lynyrd Skynyrd ♥️🙏🇺🇸🙌🏼🥰
Wow! 3 crashes, I would have been done with planes after the first.
Artimus, bless you for being so strong in tragedy.
What a terrific interview Joe! Really enjoyed listening to Artimus and getting the real story behind that tragic plane crash. Thanks & hope that all is well.
Thanks again Steve..Joe
thats how joe rolls , a true professional interviewer...
This guy was such a dynamic drummer. Unbelievable.
A finish to a great interview Joe! Just wish it could've been longer, a many do, I'm sure. Maybe they can become longer since they are in segments in the future? Love you Artemis & Joe.. #longliveSkynyrd
Joe, I missed seeing your interviews during the break! This interview with Artimus is one your best! Wow! Artimus is one awesome story teller! Thanks for sharing!💫
Thanks Larry… I hope to start doing the Backstage series more often again. I’ve pretty much run out of the Vault Series tapes. Glad you enjoyed Artimus. I enjoyed it too… best, Joe
i cant imagine what its like to have been in 3 plane crashes. what an interview. thank you joe and artimus for sharing these stories.
Man when Artimus teared up so did I. Great interview!
Me too.
Yup
Thank you Joe, i will never be able to thank you enough for all your interviews. Semper Fi Artimus God Bless you brother.
Great interview. I could listen to Artemis talk for hours.
Bless you Artemis, such an emotional, heart wrenching interview. Thanks Joe
A tear or two here!
Artimus, man what I'd give just to have a dinner and spend the time listening to you talk about life in general. Intelligent man with much experience alot to say. He's a Marine, I'm Army and my oldest son is a Marine Veteran as well. We'd have much to talk about just from our military days. Thanks Joe and especially Artimus for sharing part of your life. Semper Fidelis Marine. NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSET!
I met Artimus briefly a few years ago and he was a pleasant fellow. Absolutely legend as well….
Who the hell forgets to fuel up the plane?? Really pisses me off that this tragedy should have never occurred because of several human errors!! Thanks my friend for sharing with all of us; seriously can't begin to express my heartfelt sympathy...I'm extremely happy that all of you that survived have been able to move forward and I pray that you are alive and well. God be with each of you who were able to get through this horrible and senseless tragedy 🙏
I totally agree
Nobody forgot to fuel the plane, the faulty engine was run on the auto-rich setting and that caused the engine to burn much more fuel than normal. The pilots had problems with that engine previously and that's why it was ran in auto-rich.
Its really cool hearing his story. I have seen him talk about it alot and this is the best. I like Artimus and all of Skynard. He was a big part of one of the greatest bands of all time. Joe I went to the CMHall today and yours was better. It was okay though. It was a real honor for me to meet you. Thank you for taking the time that you did for me. I could have talked to you all day but I knew you had things to do. Your truly an A-class guy. It was a big day for me. Thanks a bunch Joe. 👍🏻😎
David it was a honor meeting you too. I truly appreciate the very kind comments and you taking time to visit the museum and speak to me too. I was working on getting this part three Artimus clip ready to put up on RUclips. Thanks again for stopping by. Sincerely… Joe
I grew up listening to this band, they were a huge influence on myself and so many people. They practically invented and defined the southern rock genre.
I have heard consistently that Ronnie Van Zandt was one of the most kindest gentlest people there ever was.
The bands potential that was cut short cannot be overstated. In particular Steve Gaines was going to become one of the greatest guitarists/vocalist the world has seen. Insane talent.
Pronounced is a great album but street survivors with Steve Gaines is top shelf!!! Every song is great! You can hear the maturity in the music 🎶🎯🙏💯💰👑
Interview with Gary rossington would be special if he would do it for you Joe .
I’ll see if we can get together John. Thanks for watching…Joe
It's interesting that some people can foretell their future, as noted by what Gaines and Van Zandt said to Artimus, or wrote as lyrics in their songs. It reminded me of the infamous '27' Club, or the 'going down to the crossroads' pact. 'Fame and Fortune' has a price - at times, a huge one. Thanx, Joe for producing these engaging interviews.
Thanks for supporting our channel Gary…Joe
It's so sad that what's left of the band can't let go of old rifts. They survived all that and yet they can't see the value in being nice to each other. Great work Joe and that man is awesome!
One of the most heartfelt interviews you've ever done, Joe. Thank you. Skyward Forever
Thank goodness for what we got from Ronnie vanzant
Ronnie Van Zant never had a more loyal brother than Artimus Pyle. Thanks for the interviews, sir.
I really do enjoy these videos. Gene Odem says nothing in Artimus movie is true. Gene says there may have been a bit of weed , but that the plane wasn't full of drugs. Gene says the hippy handshake never happened during the crash. Personally, I'm still sad that the crash happened, but I'll have to do some research before I can accept the way Artimus is telling the tale. I also had no prior judgements about Artimus. Gene telling a completely different version of facts though has me curious to find out why Artimus would change the facts.
Hard to know who to believe. Neither may be telling a fully accurate account.
Of course I wasn't anywhere near the crash site but the handshake bit has always sounded untrue to me.
Lovely interview Joe...and thanks to Artimus...he's a cool guy...
Someone is lying
Joe thanks for doing this series. So sad to have lost so much.
Thanks for watching Fred..Joe
Great series Joe..Kudos to you and the crew!
Thanks Vic..Joe
I don't buy any of the "they knew their destiny" stuff, but I like Pyle and the video. I remember Street Survivors album had flames on it but after the crash the flames were removed from the cover. I was a big fan at about 15 years old or so when that went down.
Gene Odom tells a different tell I’m so confused who telling truth
Hi David… there’s two sides( at least) to every story. Best, Joe
Damn that plane
Joe, you did a great job interviewing Artimus! I always look forward to your interviews!!!
Thank you Butch… Joe
I keep thinking that I've seen the best of your interviews and then you did this masterpiece! 👏🏻
Probably my favorite so far. Thanks man! ❤
Thanks Magra…Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum You can call me Maggie. 😉
Thanks Maggie… Joe
Great program about a great band. I loved the L.S.B back in the day as a young MARINE in the 70s. I'm hoping to catch one of arts shows here in good old western North Carolina...........
Thanks for your service Marine from one (Seabee) to a Marine and fellow Lynyrd Skynyrd fan! Loved the original Skynyrd from day 1
Artimus, I was 17 when this happened. It was so sad when it hit the news. You said some beautiful words, and feelings about your band members. Rich
I’ve listened to Gene Odem’s accounts of the crash, but I seem to go lean more to Artimus’s account, he seems to be genuine, why would he lie ?
You realize that gene odems account of what happened ain't the only one there's more with the surviving members and road crews and managers that have all said Pyle didn't do 99% of what he said he did ..I've seen an interview with the guy who ran the audio n mixing boards for the band and he's even said Pyle ran to the cockpit got the news bout the plane being out of fuel and they weren't gonna make the open field and started he stated Pyle ran past him to the back of the plane as it sty hitting the trees..go look up more interviews other than just Gene's and Artie's
Rich people can buy anything but tomorrow, and poor people can't get a refund on yesterday.
I really enjoyed this series. Thanks to you both.
For some reason I have become obsessed with the story of Lynard Skynard! I lived those times. I was 14 in 1977, Freebird was everything ♥️My parents got married on the 20th of October, I got married on the 20th of October because they did. When I found out the crash was OCTOBER 20th, I lost my mind! The song about the guns just struck me so, because you think boys from the South=Guns. But ,when I learned the song and Ronnie was against guns, I was SO Impressed. I feel like Ronnie's life was Profetic, he knew when he would die,and when it came to pass, he just accepted it. And you Sir Artimus, you, are a class act, a kind sole and I could listen to you forever. When you are young, death is the last thing ur thinking about. I hope they all felt they would make it. In my mind I see that handshake Ronnie gave you and his smile. WOW. He knew it would be alright. And Artimus, when ur time comes ,guess who will be there to to take you home, all the guys in the band who went before you. Ronnie, will be there with that smile. .waiting.🙏🕊️
I realise this was decades ago- I was a freshman in high school when this happened- but it seems like yesterday. And how devastating this was to the band (obviously) but to the entire music community. Agreed, they did reform and sound better than ever, but I am not sure if it was ever the same.
Artimus runs deep. Great drummer and person.
Thanks Joe,that was a great interview.
Most humble and greatest interview thank you so much joe. And a true great storyteller
I have nothing but respect for you Mr.Chambers and totally understand if you knock me off here. Joe something about this guy doesn't sit right with me he mentions nothing about his police recorder and the kid thing. As a father of three daughters one could bet their ass it bothers me.. thanks Joe ..
Blue… I have a daughter too. If I knew it was true I couldn’t do this interview but I don’t. If you or I were accused of something like this how can you really ever defend yourself. It’s your word against theirs. It makes me ill to think about such things happening to kids. If I ever find out it’s true I will remove this interview and apologize for doing it.
Best,
Joe
I'm 63 year old hippie and never heard anything related to Artimus and a kid.
Skyward was soundtrack to my coming of age.
Got a chance to hang out with him and his son after a show in Pennsylvania nice people real class act. So was Bill another class act.
Thanks Joe,...It is Ironic, that their Last Album's Posthumous cover, was Black, with the Band surrounded by Flames!
Awesome Job as always Joe!!! But one thing Pyle said he’s been in 3 Plane Crashes!!!! & his Dad died in a plane crash too!!!!!! That’s crazy …. I mean maybe someone is trying to tell you just take the bus !!! I was married once but after that Crashed I didn’t keep getting back on !!…. Anyway Thankyou for helping provide the soundtrack to my youth & adult hood & for being apart of in my opinion one of the All time best RockinRoll bands that’s ever been & keep doing it!!! 🚌🚌🚌
Artimus is such a nice guy.
What a killer drummer too.
I wish I could buy his music.
I would love to jam with him. I bet it would be a blast.
Thanks for sharing these videos and adding value to my life ! ❤️🤘❤️
Great job Joe Being a drummer myself Artimus Pyle has been an Idol of mine since I 1st heard him so glad to hear he's doing good these day's this was the 1st time I ever heard Artimus speak on the the crash very heart breaking great interview thank you.
Awesome JoeNice interview guys. I remember a band Artimus had after Skynyrd called Those Guys. They used to play at the Sunset grille on A1A in StAugustine Florida. Keep Rocking Artimus👍🤠🙏
Thanks for watching Haus….Joe
Thanks Joe for these three parts which were just incredible story-telling. What a great humble man is Artimus who I would trust with my life.
Part 3 was especially moving and yet another plane crash that should not have happened. You're doing great work Joe so please keep it up.
The other stories i had heard were Ronnie was sleeping when the plane crashed. I tend to believe this man. Still a very sad story to this day because well it just is. I know people working in live entertainment any where i was working for the next few months were walking around with heads down.
There will always be more than 1 version. Different ppl reactions and memories will differ
@@StarlightWorkshop0z
That is true. For instance, one tale goes that Ronnie was lying down in aisle in front of plane (for room to stretch out), with Leslie Hawkins cracking his backing as he suffered with back problems. Then told to buckle up, going to crash. Everyone’s perception & memory seems to be different. It seems that, from what I have read, the pilots had been smoking pot & drinking liquor the night before, & should have paid more attention to fuel gauges day of flight. The right engine was in auto-rich mode, which burned more fuel & caused “torching” (flames shooting). Either the pilots were negligent or ignorant of increased fuel consumption as they failed to monitor instruments for fuel flow & fuel quantity. It is a shame that more care was not taken to check the aircraft’s worthiness, & also the band to think they didn’t have time to wait to be safe. Even band’s manager, Rudge, flew commercial first class, not in Corvair 240.
@@frankiebutler2894 The plane burned up the fuel anf even it didn't if another issue was causing the crash before crash landing a plane the pilots are taught to dump the fuel to avoid explosion. that is likely the only right thing they did do before they met their fate.
Joe , one of the best ever, Thank you. "You must judge a man's greatness by how much he will be missed" - - - - - Will Rogers.
That plane was 30 years old when it crashed. By the way (GE, Rolls Royce, and Pratt Whitney) make great plane engines. I just can’t fathom getting on something that old.
I love Artimus and his drumming but the man needs to stop lying about Ronnie going around as the plane was going down, he got up from his nap and told everyone he loved them before his sudden death. That's bullshit. Almost everyone else including Gene Odom, Leslie Hawkins, Craig Reed, Gary Rossington and Kevin Elson has said Ronnie Van Zant was zoned out hungover and exhausted on the floor near the cockpit door/Kitchen room of the plane when the trouble happened again and Gene Odom had to wake him up to prepare for the crash.
Dylan… thanks for sharing your thoughts… everyone at the scene of a accident sees things from a different perspective. I imagine being in a plane crash is beyond anything those of us who haven’t gone through it can believe so I withhold my personal opinion and go with the one who lived through it. Best, Joe
Yes..
Great work Joe, you are talented. It was really nice to see and listen to Artimus Pyle and realize what a great person he is!
I almost got to go to their concert. They were one of my most favorite of all. We lived on that music. I graduated in 77
The survivors have never received just compensation for that crash…Craig Reed has raised some money to help them but the Band should have set up a fund for them. The LS tribute Band has been making money all these years…I guess Gary and Judy own the rights to the name
I'm so glad I watched this. A ton of revelations in it. Thanks!
Street survivors was not of the truth.
But i appreciate Artemis contrabution to the band as a musician. And i love his atritude. He is quite the story teller...embellished alot ..but God bless him.
Literally just watched the Street Survivors movie last night its free on Tubi, very good movie!
I was a kid. And it kind of crushed me. Loved their music so much. I was a kid on the north side of Chicago, not a southerner.
Artimus was the least injured in the plane crash and also still living among that group today along with the piano player.
Ronnie could have never went to the back of the plane, he was out cold due to sleeping pills. Gene Odom buckled him into his seat before impact.
That ol Jerry Lee Lewis is a bad omen man...he also had owned the plane that Ricky Nelson died in.🤔🧐
Some of his story contradicts what Gene Odom says about the crash. Just saying
I like how she doesn't interrupt artimus while he's talking.
The movie should be redone. Sorry the one that was made was no good.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Duane….Best, Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum I love Lynyrd Skynrd. Ill lookforward to a interview with Gary Rossington. Best wishes to you also Joe
Rock and Roll Hallafame they are Legendary Lynyrd skynyrd.
if u could go back in time, and yell check the fuel to the band, before they got on the plane
God Bless Artimus!!! stay good in St. Augie 🙂
This interview is 2 days after my birthday
Another Sound of Cinderella ❤
Absolutely gripping storytelling
Wow..I wonder what plane crash he was in.
Just seems like a caring sweet guy.
Love you Artimus!! Great interview!!
Thank you joe yess indeed
It's funny how Ronnie is from Dixie (I don't know if Florida is considered Dixie) but he's southern for sure, and wrote an anti gun song (Saturday Night Special). I don't think the majority of people put 2 and 2 together.
Then his cousin starts a band called .38 Special....Lol.
Then his cousin
What a great man ! ❤🙏👍
Well Joe, thank You once again, awesome interviews !! You are the best ❤️🎸🎶🎸🎶🎸
Thanks Lloyd.. very kind of you….Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum very welcome, enjoy all of them 🎸🎶🎸🎶
They all say Artimus lied but everytime he talks about the crash he gets emotional people who lie don't get emotional I believe what he says I think tempers and other people being involved caused alot of the riff between band members god bless LYNYRD SKYNYRD AND YOU ARTIMUS [>
Thank you Artimus. I've heard this interview before. You were honorable speaking of your friends and band mates.
If I'm not mistaken Jerry Lee Lewis plane was the one that Ricky Nelson and stone mountain band died in 1986 ! Might not be the same plane but it was Jerry's plane
The plane was 30 years old in 1977. A 1992 plane would be thirty years old now in 2022. 1992 doesn't feel like 30 years ago but it is. Would you be afraid of a 1992 airplane? IDK.
Wow, I sure miss KDF and the Bubba Skynard days! Ah the days of my youth and Rock'n' Roll was a huge part of it! ✌
Excellent interview Joe ! You Rock Brother !
Will, thank you.
Dad passed away peacefully September 28th, but I know he would have appreciated your kind words and support.
Best,
Britt
Art likes sporting cowboy hats, is he real?
Huh? He’s from rural America. You do know that cowboy hats literally come from rural USA , right?
I was fortunate enough to see Skynard live twice & get drunk w/ all the members of Rossington Collins band in Columbia MD ,, I had all their autographs,,they'll always be my all time favorite band but it's very hard to listen to the old songs because it makes me so sad ,,God Bless them all !
Wow, Artemis said he lived through 3 plane crashes......he must have a guardian angel on one shoulder.
Ronnie! 🥺
Rip sir..
Their brother Donnie was lead singer for38 special what legend bands truly missed
