My god!!!! I just heard this version for the first time and my jaw dropped. Steve Walsh’s singing was flawless. Every note was perfection. His phrasing of words, his vocal control, his voice, there is absolutely nobody who compares to Steve in his prime.
This man is twenty five years old as he sings this. This man had a voice that made everyone that heard him fall in love with his sound . I have never heard anyone like him since .Now that Steve Walsh is older his voice may have changed just like all singers do with time . I love his sound as much today as I did the first time I heard him. The way he performs amazes me ! I will always love the sound of his voice and his music.! God bless you Steve Walsh and your family ! 🎹🎤🎶💞😁
Agree so much with this ... there are moments on "Black Butterfly" that are shatteringly beautiful ("Grace and Nature") and emotional, with Steve's matured voice. Presently it's "Hell or High Water" that gets to me; I don't think his younger voice even with all of its gleaming splendour could touch me as much as this on this song.
I don't think there's a vocalist in the world who could match what Steve was capable of singing when he was in his prime! There's something about is tone, phrasing and timing that's pure magic!
Chris Thompson and Jamison are good singers, but Walsh was the voice of Kansas just like Steve Perry was the voice of Journey (even though Gregg Rolie can be likened to Steinhardt), Lou Gramm was the voice of Foreigner, and Freddie Mercury was the voice of Queen.
I saw Kansas twice in the mid 70's....the most impressive live act I've ever seen/heard...in reference to Steve Walsh in particular,...first & foremost the Voice: best tone, power, control, vibrato, pitch, breath control & overall technique...musical abilities: (multi- instrumentalist) organ, piano, percussion: notably, congas & vibraphone. Walsh was one of the very few singers that absolutely laid it all on the line in a live performance!!...many times changing the original melody & opting for a higher more technically challenging melodic line!!!...I would be remiss if I didn't mention his polyrhymic abilities on keyboard...if you haven't seen Miracles out of nowhere live, do so & pay particular attention to the bass & treble clef lines that Walsh is performing simultaneously during the Fugue portion of the song!!....absolutely incredible!!!...he does the same polyrhymic technique on The Spider!!!....truly the most talented Singer/Musician/Frontman I have ever witnessed!!! 0:57
Steve Walsh was in a league by himself..in his prime, he could sing do handstands and paly the keyboards all at once. I NEVER missed a concert if it was within a 150 miles. In my day I could even sing along, but my prime has passed too !!! LOL
Actually, Steve said in an interview that they had an organ player off stage playing when he was dong the handstands, because he couldn't play and do the handstands at the same time.
This is WAY better than the album version. It cracks me up when I hear someone say "That show was great , they sounded exactly like the record!" That's boring to me. They should've saved a bunch of money and stayed home and listened to the record. I want something different when I go to a show. Said this improv junkie!
This wasn't just great music, it stamped that era with introspective deep meaning and created a soul searching atmosphere that was undeniable and earth shattering for all who listened with ears to hear. In many ways their music was the soul of that era, songs like this for sure. Many of us were lost deep in the weeds, music like this helped tether us back to earth, giving hope to all.
A lifetime ago I was at the show in Clarkston Mi, Pine Knob Music Theater. When they played this song the place went wild. Walsh was in top form drove the audience to a frenzy. You have to listen to that version to really appreciate this song!
It's amazing that his touring voice is as good as his studio voice. So many vocalists, even great ones like Mercury and Plant, could not hit the high notes with a tired tour voice, and reduced their vocal parts often to low harmonies in those situations. Walsh nails them, and even rises above the studio version. Wow!
43 years ago. . I can't believe it's been long ago. This live version is amazing! Thanks for sharing!! God bless Steve Walsh and Kansas! Just one word for you. . .MONOLITH!!!! Carry on!
Yes but I have two words for you: Audio Visions So underrated. When it came out I used to listen to it from start to finish every night while doing homework. Thank God for Columbia House. Their cassettes lasted less but I later got all that stuff on CD. Now it’s on the internet for all to enjoy free. I had and enjoyed all their albums back then. Saw the original lineup for that Audio-Visions tour.
Seeing Kansas many times, but my favorite concert was on July 9 1978 at Merriweather Post Pavilion, a Sunday night. The energy was incredible and to finish the night, they played one of the greatest Prog rock songs ever-Magnum Opus! At 22 years of age, a guitarist and music lover they just blow my mind!! This was a night to remember, seeing the one of the greatest Bands ever! Amazing time to live in the 70's

@larissanascimento1035 Exactly! That's the way it feels for me too. Regardless of how good other vocalists are/have been at reaching notes, technically speaking etc, he is the one that no matter how his vocal chords were doing at the time, he ALWAYS delivered his heart and soul, that raw emotion that cannot be taught.
You are right on, Linnea. Heart squeezing notes. This and the "Two For The Show" versions are stellar. I have a very hard time listening to later versions. Such a shame. :-( Thank you for sharing this awesome version!
Steve Walsh is an original. There are great keyboard players out there. They are great singers out there. They are great performers out there. He’s all of those and more. The process of covering this song has helped me to appreciate its many intricacies, and many unique live versions, for that matter! I wonder how many performances of this you've listened to, for this to be the favorite out of them? The vocals are impeccable; Walsh's voice truly soars on the high notes. It's fascinating to hear a version in '76, the band relatively fresh out of the studio sessions for Leftoverture. Overall, a wonderful recording - tacksåmycket!
This was the snow storm show at Cobo hall that average white bank couldnt make it to open. Kansas played an extra long set with songs not on the setlist. Does that sound familiar or did you see them at pine knob
I've seen them 7 times in 3 different states...The Masonic Temple [ Detroit ] was the first time...still have a tee-shirt ! ... wasn't a snow storm , and Leftoverture was new !
Linnea, do you have Steve singing "slow down" at the Volunteer Jam(1982) with Charlie Daniels? I believe Steve played 3 songs (Summertime Blues/Down The Road and Slow Down) the songs can be heard on "Concert Vault" but not for purchase.
where was this 11-29-76 show recorded at? maybe Masonic? I saw them in early 1978 at Cobo ironically in a snowstorm and the Atlanta Rhythm Section opening couldn't make it into Detroit during the storm so Kansas played longer as the only act just brilliant that night during the Point of Know Return tour

Steve and the original band was something that may never come again. I hope figure generation will live to understand the music.
Michael Lund TRUE MUSICIANS!
It will never come again…BUT, we win, we know them, we lived during their time 🙌🏻
So blessed
I don't think there's a vocalist in the world who could match what Steve was capable of singing when he was in his prime! There's something about is tone, phrasing and timing that's pure magic!
Yeah without a doubt. He had a ring in his voice that few if any have ever matched!
I would have like to have heard Chris Thompson in his prime sing some Kansas songs!! another great singer!
or how about the Jimi Jamison in his prime during bruning heart??
Speaking of heart, the phrasings of Heart's Nancy Wilson to me is the most fascinating female singer live.

I could only sing along in my dreams! 😀
and while on plenty of "White Lines" cannot imagine 😮 doing 🎙🎹 handstands whilst High as a kite 🤯
Actually, Steve said in an interview that they had an organ player off stage playing when he was dong the handstands, because he couldn't play and do the handstands at the same time.

This just shows that not only was this band awesome on record, but they were also arguably the greatest live act!
Look at that tone!
Look at those vocals!
To sing this song with such deep lyrics and in that emotion and intensity is up to him, Steve Walsh!
2019. Notorious B.I.G. nominated to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Still shunned..........Kansas. 'Splain that to me, Lucy.
Absolutely ridiculous
That's disgusting
Because Kansas is real & honest rock. And the lords of the world(they belong to Zog) hate the good rock with positive values.
Rock and roll hall of fame is a fucking joke and it means absolutely nothing
