A little story about this song. Kerry Livgren use to play this progression to practice his finger picking. One day he was practicing this at home, and his wife said it was pretty and that he should make a song out of it. The rest is history!
It's the perfect song for Brian May because his PhD thesis was about interplanetary dust! As of this writing, Dr. Brian May is 74 years old, and he's the kindest and most soft spoken person I have ever seen and heard among the vast sea of well-known celebrities. What an amazing person!
Could not agree more. A celebrated guitarist from one of the UK's (many) great rock bands, then just adds on a physics PhD, and uni chancellorship for good measure. That's versatile.
I kind of felt like this, for Brian, would be like playing a basic, boring bit.. but he respected the original melody and only put a bit of "lace" on it toward the end.. just love him so much..
Brian is a superlative guitarist, and Queen is one of the most versatile, prolific bands of all time with an incredible body of work. It's icing on the cake that Brian is such a genius (and obviously a hard worker), yet remains a humble gentleman.
Of course it makes sense to play this song because the song Another One Bites The Dust has the same word. The Queen song with Dust is Angel Dust, which is getting high on drugs especially the drug Angel Dust and there is even a backmasking subliminal message I wanna smoke marijuana, not about gangsters, guns, or a boxer being knocked out. The song Dust In The Wind also about getting high on drugs especially Angel Dust. So it makes sense for Brian May to play this song.
Beautiful arrangement of a magnificent song. May was a huge Kansas fan, and I encourage anyone who doesn't know much about Kansas to really dig into their discography. Their body of work is phenomenal and their musicianship is so underrated and undervalued by mainstream record critics, it is a crying shame, they never got the respect they deserved. And as someone who has seen them 18 times in concert, I can vouch for those as honest words. You will not be disappointed.
I discovered Kansas just over 4 decades ago when I was in my mid-teens. Hardly anyone had heard of them here in England (my school friends never really got them at all) and Kansas rarely toured here, so they are one of the few great rock bands that I never got to see play live. All of those 1970s Kansas albums have stood the test of time really well.

Brian may's guitar technique level is much higher then Jimmy's - all the notes a clear and performed perfectly in tempo. Also he do a classic violin vibratto - it's a sign of the professional guitarist. All the live performances by Jimmy Page are too dirty and not synced perfectly with the drums - I can't stand led zeppelin live, it's too much pain for my ears. However Page is a one of the greatest in terms of arrangement and composition.
Here's the crazy part about this whole thing. That guitar? Most people would see this and think it's a Martin due to the headstock shape & color. It's not. It's actually an old Tokai Humming Bird worth maybe $3-400 in anyone else's hands. That's Brian's #1 acoustic guitar and has been for a long time from what I understand.
I've always loved this song and I first saw Kansas at a small concert at the Cotillion Ballroom in Wichita, Kansas and was hooked on their music since then. It was a very small intimate venue, about 200 people and we were asked to move up close around the band. One of the members at time played the Flute and I vividly remember his playing sent chills down my spine. They haven't disappointed me since. Thanks Brian.
BTW there is no greater compliment than a great guitarist or singer taking on your song with love and admiration for the song itself. May and this pretty lady show their love for the band Kansas and this wonderful song.

"and Brian's solo was fantastic!!" --- Not to be nit picky but isn't a solo playing by yourself? At times, I could hardly hear the beautiful guitar music over the keyboard. What is a solo in a musical called? = In musical performance, a solo is a piece or a section of a piece that is played or sung by a single performer. This said, I get your gist.
Crush Everything ---- Did you not read the actual definition of what a solo is? I included it in my post, I didn't make it up. What do you think "solo" is? The very word means one, by yourself. Just because people like you have bastardized the word away from its original and true meaning doesn't make you right.
Crush Everything --- also, if you're going to say that this was a solo because the dude played guitar with no other guitars included, then he also played "solo" throughout the entire song, as did the key board player, and the woman sang solo throughout as well. If your saying it was a solo because the woman stopped singing for a bit, then at least both the guitarist and keyboard player were both playing their "solos" together. Perhaps to you a solo is when a player stops playing rhythm. You should listen to more music, this happens all the time but it's still only a true "solo" when they do this alone. All this said, why did you start the insults? If you knew what you were talking about and could actually explain and defend your position, I would have welcomed that and perhaps learned something new myself. Instead you resorted to the tired old stance of crying "you're wrong and you're too stupid to know why" without any intellect or reasoning to back up your position.
@@fredman1085- Brian May is a rock musician. In the vernacular of rock music, what he played is known as a solo. You’re trying to apply classical terms to the rock medium and it makes you come off like a pretentious tool.

I grew up in Kerry Livgren's hometown (Topeka Kansas) and went to High School with his two younger brothers (Chris and Cal). The band that Kerry formed prior to renaming it "Kansas" was called White Clover. They would play gigs at local dives and bars. What an awesome show it was. After Kansas became commercially successful, Kerry would send his family pre-release tracks of some of the music prior to an album being released, and Chris and Cal would treat us to the thrill of listening to some of the music before it was available commercially. I don't think "Dust in the Wind" was one of the titles we had early, but it is my favorite Kerry Livgren composition.
Remember exactly when and were I was when that song came out over the radio, riding in my automobile in 1978. Though true, we are made from the dust of the Earth, we are more than dust, we are also spirit, soul, which is the part that lives on, after the dust (so to speak) has settled back to Earth!

Wow, simply wonderful! What a heart-touching version of that great song!!!!! Love it much...
Thanks for sharing... beautifully executed both singing & playing... cheers from Australia 😀
This is wonderful! Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart.
Played this song at my sweet Brother’s Memorial last year 🥲He played guitar and was playing it the week before he passed ♥️
Sorry for your loss
If it was just the guitar and vocals, it would be like hearing very talented friends playing this in your livingroom. Simple can be so immensly satisfying.
Piękny głos i cudny akompaniament. Pozdrawiam.
So I didn't even hear her sing, I was watching and listening to Brian play. Fantastic interpretation of a great song.
OMG! This is magnificent! Kansas and Queen: My two favorite bands, and I have been fortunate to see them in concert. Thanks so much for posting this!
Brian looks more and more like Isaac Newton all the time... :)
Ding !
Hilarious
I just found out he has a Phd in astrophysics. So building a guitar was probably no big deal.
I play guitar and have studied physics as well - But I never reached his level - He *is* a valid successor of Isaac ! But the chair was occupied by Genius Hawkins
You all right 😁
Great performance! Thanks.❤️
Низкий поклон за ваше творчество .Шедевр !!! Привет из Красноярска !!!
"A long time ago..." 1977! I was almost 30, went with Rosemary and Pauline, and everybody they knew, to see Kansas do this and a dozen other masterpieces at the Aladdin Theater for the Performing Arts in Las Vegas.
Not so long ago, or is it?? Oof. This song does me in whenever I hear it. Classic mind-bending soul.
Elvis went in 77' ,so the good lord had to help us through.
I seen Kansas and Queen in Edmonton in 1975. This was 3 months before Bohemian Rhapsody came out. Dust in the wind came two years later. I remember Brain May saying to us, OH COME ON YOU GUYS. I guess we Canadians were to well behaved.
How was Freddie?
@@gontnetwork8851 He was in his glory. What a entertainer.
@@SPLITSLEEVE Even before the Bohemian Rhapsody!
@@gontnetwork8851 Yes. I seen Kansas and Queen on April 2 1975. Bohemian Rhapsody! was recorded in August the same year. The concert was held in the Kinsmen Field House which only held 5000 people. WE back then sat on the floor. I was 30 feet in front of the band. What a great night it was.
This RUclips thing should have a "many thumbs up" icon... This is too good for just one.
your music is like a fine wine its always great.
The Head of Rock Music is Brian May! He plays electric and acoustic guitars. So great to have him alive!
Super job people... wow... i'm impressed... oldster73 here...
haven't heard this one in a while, nicely done, very moving.
Great memories. Stay safe my friend.
K you so very much for this incredibly beautiful version of this song. Deeply moving.
Kerry is an amazing songwriter!
Absolutely brilliant 👍🌻♥️
Remember exactly when and were I was when that song came out over the radio, riding in my automobile in 1978. Though true, we are made from the dust of the Earth, we are more than dust, we are also spirit, soul, which is the part that lives on, after the dust (so to speak) has settled back to Earth!
I had the pleasure of working with Brian back in the 1980's when he wrote a soundtrack for a production of Macbeth I was in. A truly deep thinking, kind, compassionate and brilliant human being.
What was your job?
This has been a very favorite song of mine since the 70’s
A really fine version of one of the best song ever….
Brian May is just absolutely fabulous.
Although this is probably the only song that I could play technically exactly like he, he sounds 1000 times better and more sophisticated than I ever could. What a brilliant guitar player, good person and brilliant mind (PhDs in Astrophysics do not come easy).
dont put yourself down - we all learnt to play in E minor!!
This song was a classic from day one
Queen guitarist does a nice job.The vocalist great . Let's give thanks to the band Kansas and remember Robbie Steinhardt , John Elefante.
John Elefante isn’t dead as far as I know!
@@martinkulkarni3569 -Very good sir I left this as an egg . John has a very long list of acomplishments . Cheers to you !
Robbie Steinhardt was the best! He will be remembered as one of the greatest musicians of all time. His solo album was recently released, and I will definitely add it to my music collection.
Perhaps you should thank Kerry Livgren.
@@1_hopelesshuman - Ah yes forgot about Kerry . Hate to write but also Steve Walsh . Seen the band years ago at a county fair and people still hatted Steve . He was pissed off for the negativity from the audience . Music is a business just like professional sports . Players under contract move on to other projects similar to the music industry .
Cheers 11/22/2021
Wow ,first reaction is wow. Apart from the fact that mister May is a learned gentleman this was a seriously beautiful rendition of the song..Thanks to the person who put this on the internet.
That was excellent. Her vocals are top notch.
I love how Brian treats the gifts of flowers with respect and lays them gently on the floor.
su majestad Brian May. Extraordinario músico y tremendo ser humano, lo refleja en su rostro.
Thank you for her beautiful singing. Brian's guitar sounds great, too.
Stunningly beautiful
I taught myself on guitar how to pick this song back in 70s. I usually just strummed. Many wonderful memories songing this with college friends.
He's a great guitar player I remember hearing queen on the radio jamming guitars it was brian
