- While the image quality still isn't the best, the audio is... This was the opening track from their well-known Canada Jam performance on Aug. 26th, 1978. Special note: Steve's vocal performance on this is out of this world! It's about time the full recording of this show surfaces and gets a proper release on DVD.

This music is sublime. These guys were America's answer to Yes and Genesis. Big music. Rich music. It's all about the music. And yes, Steve's vocals are out of this world.
I'd even go for Electright Light Orchestra because who of those actually used a violin

Nobody could touch those vocals. Something else I tell ya. Im a diehard Paul Rodgers fan but Steve was definitely the tops in his Prime.

+bill stout I was just about to say the same thing... lol. This is an extremely great representation of when people testify to Steve's voice being one of the best in rock music.. Just listen to those falsetto's at 6:30 at the end of the song...Those notes, are harder to hit than most people realize. Even when done in falsetto range, it's what proves he has that little extra range that most earthlings.....don't! lol.
+shucksful To be honest those notes aren't hard to hit with a trained falsetto. Now those cleanhighs on the other hand are pretty damn difficult.
What a monster musician Steve Walsh is here...playing at the level he is, while dancing around, while pushing his voice to the max towards the outro WHILE playing a synthesizer.

Absolutely. Nice to see them getting the love they deserve and deserve and deserve. I can listen to the drums and bass in isolation on Song for America and Masque all day long.

Dave Hope was one of the greatest bass players ever. Trying to recreate his basslines live is not a feat for the easily-discouraged. The whole band was scary-good! Kansas fan forever!
Ernie Smothers He inspired me to pick up the bass. Always tried to channel my inner Dave Hope but never could quite get there. I don’t think many people realize how much of the Kansas sound was in large part due to his majestic bass lines. I always wondered if Kerry wrote those bass parts note for note or if Dave created those.

@@daveman439 you’re absolutely right. So many people just love to attribute any energy to cocaine. To me, that shows they don’t know what they’re talking about. The energy cocaine gives you comes at a great cost. It’s not a sustainable way to be a professional anything. Ask anybody who really knows.

In my opinion, Kansas is the greatest band of all time! I have been a fan since the late 70's and only wish I had seen a concert with the original lineup. Without a doubt the synergy they shared was unbelievable with their first 3 albums reaching a 10 in my book. Praise God for Kerry and Dave for their testimonies as Christians of whom I am also 😇

@@bobbylancaster4683 Steve Walsh definitely did drugs. Dave Hope probably didn't (being already a serious Christian in the back of the tour bus). Kerry probably did, and later regretted it. Robbie and Rich would have been cool about it (is my guess). And I don't know when Phil was hanging out with Dave. But Steve definitely did drugs :) Which is fine. But, that doesn't mean they were hopped up when performing. As an ironic example, the only time Alice Cooper wasn't drunk for a large portion of his career was the two hours when he was performing. He mentions a chat with his therapist who said (paraphrasing), "You always blame Alice as the source of your problems, Vincent, but being onstage was the only time you weren't drunk. So, Alice kept you sober." :)
Walsh was whisky and weed. Coke sometimes I am sure, as even RUSH did coke in the late 70's into the early 80's, but to say his hi energy is coke...not necessarily.@@talastra
I have Steve's C-3 that he's playing in this video in my basement. I bought it through KANSAS road manager, Clay Schell in Atlanta, and consider it a documented piece of Rock & Roll history. I met Dave and Robbie a year or so later after a concert at Clemson University. It was a great concert by great guys, making unforgettable memories! ☮✌
oh Lord, this is a band from the other world! They were long ahead of their time with a highly intricate sound, deep, breathtaking arrangements! Oh gosh! LOVE THIS BAND FOREVER ........
I saw them in 1980.... this couple years period of time from about 1978 to 1980, the band was really, really on top of their game. I'd venture that there were very few who could hang with them at this point. Really complex and busy arrangements, beautiful vocals and musicianship.
Jon Hiller I saw them before the Left Overture explosion....and after.....both concerts left me awe struck.
I never tire of listening to this band in their prime. Steve was by far the best of that time imo.
Saw them 8 times and NEVER a disappointment. Evert single show tight and awesome. I miss these guys. My son will say I sound like an old fart but, they just don't make many like em anymore. Thank you Kerry for writing such gems for these impeccable artists.
Their current line up is fantastic too. They released an album called The Prelude Implicit in September of 2016, you should check it out. It is great. And a new album is due next year.
@Paul Turzio - I brought my son up on Kansas, but he prefers Pink Floyd, Meatloaf, & The Specials. He likes Kansas, but I think the song I Can Fly took them below top on his meter.

Kerry Livgren was the heart and soul of this band but all were spectacular musicians. Masque was my favorite album but all the early ones were criminally under rated

...I was 14 and thought BTO and James Gang were what rock was about...when my older brother came home with an 8-track of Down the Road, Devil Game, and this incredible song. And this was the first music that made me want to dance--brilliant, complex, alive. I lived and breathed Kansas until Seconds Out 3 years later deepened my direction.... But just hearing the first measures of Song For America moves my heart, after hundreds of even thousand of times I've listened to every strike of Phil's beat, the melody of Robbie's violin, and those crazy synths...45 years later this song is still so moving. Coming round circle and listening to so many other fabulous bands since. hearing it 45 years later this song is second to none...
Seconds out is so great, but honestly Song for America is basically American Genesis at a peak. Song for America is basically Kansas' equivalent of Firth of Fifth.
How could Steve play keyboards while shaking his legs and body all around the place, AND do it impeccably, is something that escapes my understanding.
Kansas is one of the best American bands of all time. They are in my top 5 for sure. Amazing musicianship and songwriting craft. We do not seem to have this anymore in today's music. Music is fabricated now with digital technology. We lost the composer/musician/performer. At least we have a few, but not many. Both my boys have been learning music since they were small. They can read, write and play their instruments with proficiency. They are teenagers now and they also love Kansas. My friends, keep sharing this great music with today's generation and the next.
As a pro musician, raised in the 70's its been my experience that all my colleagues who majored in music on the Conservatory level (yes, even artist diploma recipients) love this band for the creativity and insight into rock and roll/classical fusion. So psychlos21, I whole-heartedly agree.

I was at this concert in 1978. I was 19 and can remember the crowd was enormous, 100,000 or more if memory serves. Kansas stole the show. I wish I still had the T shirt. They were at the pinnacle of their career. couldn't believe that I found this video.

Saw them in 75 just before Masque came out and they did this song! They had 2 mirror balls going,the top half going one way and the bottom half going the other way with 2 spotlights on it,it had the effect of two universes going in two directions collapsing on itself in the middle and i know it wasn't just the drugs!!Awesome time!!! My favorite band of all time!!

The poor camera man thought Steve was playing the synth solo, but he should have had the camera on Kerry instead.
Kansas was so awesome in 1978, definitely the best band on the planet at that time and there were some good bands back then!
Bit of a late reply, but that's the editors' fault. Either there was no camera on Kerry whatsoever, or the editors of the clips were pretty dimwitted not to cut to him on that part.
Producer sits in back and plans the shot list. Director- executes the shot list by calling it for live switching. It would go, "camera 4 give me a closeup on drums, camera 3 ready me a close up of guitar, camera 2 ready on bass. And camera 4, ready camera 3, go camera 3, and ready 2, 1 I want you on a wide shot of stage, 3 go to keyboard, and go 2, and 4 give me singer center stage." Technical Director or TD - punches up the buttons on the preview bus and then the program bus. Listens to the director for the cues and readies the shots then switches them live to program as instructed.
MrCamelneck. Another common error is attributing the piano playing to Steve. But Steve only played the organ in addition to singing.
Kerry composed, orchestrated, wrote lyrics and played lead guitar, piano, synthesizer, mellotron, etc. What an amazing man & band. They're too good for the RRHOF!
Oh, for the days when Steve Walsh was in full voice. I saw the band in '80. They were extrordinary.
THE MAGNIFICENT SIX!!!! As a musician of 25 years myself, I am just spellbound every time I listen to the classic Kansas lineup play on the rare limited footage that exists from their 1970s peak period. Kansas in 1978 was at the top of their game with several timeless albums and years of touring under their belt and it shows. We look back at the rock gods in our lives as these sages that somehow had a supernatural connection to whatever universe the greatest music ever made comes from. Can you believe it? These guys were in their 20s!! Imagine artists in their 20s now doing music of this calibre....

There's some really phenomenal black metal happening currently. It doesn't have this complexity, but it's great stuff.
A very high percentage of the comments talk about the band and how great they were. Did anyone even listen to and understand the words? They are talking about one of the greatest tragedies ever perpetrated on this planet, in human history! I certainly did forget to give Kudos to the musicians, true master of their art, and visionaries all.

The writing, arranging and performing of Kansas was stellar in every aspect. They were completely original, carving out a niche of progressive rock separate and apart from each and every other band in the same category. To this day their innovative musical prowess still takes a second seat to the well deserved musical success acquired from their radio hits. I'm glad I know them for more than just that. Underneath their classic rock catalog of recognizable standards lies a repertoire of incredible and completely original progressive rock masterpieces. May this ever evolving band of wayward sons carry on for another 40 plus years.
Steve is so amazing! I love his high energy. Singing to the heavens, dancing behind the keys and groovin' to the music, I saw Kansas 8 times in the 90's. Every performance was fantastic, top-notch musicianship. This prog-rock is among the best in the world along with other 70's acts like YES, Genesis & U.K.

Yep!! Steve is very very very talented. It is the entire group of course that makes Kansas the greatest.
I grew up on the Beatles and then Kansas came to be. I was overseas in Japan when I first heard "Carry on my Wayward son" then the whole album of Leftoverture. All I can say is move over rover, and let Kansas take over! It was October when I arrived in Japan and when this album was released. Between Boston's debut album and the 4th album for Kansas, I was in rock heaven!! A great time to be alive as this music was coming on the scene.
What a rare treat this is I did see Kansas twice in Cleveland 1 in a downtown venue and one at Blossom Music Center they were both awesome but I really enjoyed the one at Blossom when they opened up for Yes it was a neat thing seeing Steve Walsh doing a handstand on his keyboard I hope Steve is enjoying his retirement

In 1978 I'm a 14 year old kid hanging out with my brother's 18 year old friends. We go on a 4 hour road trip to Dallas and Kansas is one of the 8-track tapes we have. I got to hear all of the new songs to me on that trip. So this and many of the other songs brings back memories of the many Chinese fire drills, renting a motel room and splitting it 6 ways. And also the other greats such as Cream, BTO, Chicago, and Seals and Croft.

I remember hitchhiking down to Mosport for Canada Jam in '78....got there late at night and couldn't find my friends who were supposed to meet me at the front gate. The campground was a zoo of halucinagenics....so I passed out about 300 yards from the main stage and woke up the next morning to the sounds of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils! WOW, what an party!!! And yes, Kansas stole the show and Steve Walsh put on a mind blowing performance! Mind you, some of it might have been the LSD too...oh, and amazingly, I found my friends in a sea of 110,000 people!!!....lol

The "Point of Know Return" LP & tour was the band @ its zenith! I saw them two weeks earlier in Shreveport LA, w/ Thin Lizzy opening, & a terrific show it was! Walsh's soaring voice, @ its peak, was truly one of rock music's best!!

Thank for posting - so true that this whole thing needs to come out on dvd. Two songs, the most commercial, showing up on the documentary is not enough! This was one of the best concerts I've ever seen, and my night was on New Year's Eve in LA. Steve was able to hit astonishingly high notes, all while doing his sort of rain-making dance (see 5min mark) and wild gymnastic moves... stunning. Ending the main set with "Sparks of the Tempest" and exiting the stage while the coda played, was a great bit of stagecraft (one they repeated last year on that tour). The best

Kansas is another level when it comes to music. Musicians listen to Kansas when they want to hear something really good and well put together. It's hard to describe with words just how great they were.

Steve Walsh had an Awesome Voice . What a Song !
I so love this tune and its album. I was an instant fan of Kansas from the first album. Walsh and Livgren created some of the most inventive and exciting American prog, and they did it for so many years. I never got to see them live during the release of those iconic albums of the 70's and 80's. However, by sheer chance I go to see them around 1991, if my old memory hasn't failed me completely. They performed on a bill with Starship and REO Speedwagon, with them headlining. I got that starstruck, rare opportunity to speak to Steve Walsh just after Kansas left the stage, and, like youngster, (which i certainly was not by those days), I choked and ended up stammering out the usual fan stuttering "that was so awesome", or something to that effect. He turned out to be quite gracious, shaking my hand and thanking me for the compliments. The conversation obviously did not consist of anything of substance. What it did show, however, how much he and the rest of Kansas were the real deal, treating their fans, both old and new, with such kindness and respect, even after blasting through an exhausting, high energy show. It was, by the way, a fantastic show, and I got to be almost within touching distance of the stage.

Love Kansas. I saw them live in Buffalo NY in 1981.....they rocked. Then I saw them in Alaska at the state fair in 2012....WOW....kids, just say no to drugs and do not ever attempt plastic surgery while stoned (Steve). I'm glad he's clean now but dude, the damage is done. Hard to watch. The music was still AWESOME!!

Saw them for the first time at Arrowhead Stadium in 1973-4. They looked like they had just come from the cornfields of Kansas. Coveralls, etc. My goodness, they took my breath away! Followed them for years until Steve lost his voice. Would love to see them with the symphony.
Outstanding and so clear...thanks so much. May Robbie's memory bless us eternal. There was no band like Kansas in that exciting time of their career. I must have seen them 20 times. The first time was at the Aragon Ballroom (small venue) when they opened for Queen, about 1975. The excitement for both reletively new bands was off the charts
Saw them Saturday and they were fantastic. Not even using their own equipment and my far one of the best bands.

Thanks for posting. That's wonderful. Wish I'd be able to see them then. I've seen 'em a few times. But the 1st wasn't until the Power tour. So I never got to see Robby or Kerry. Or Dave Hope for that matter. I did get to see Steve Morse & Billy Greer with them who are both pretty great themselves. Great band. Great song. Great performance.
Awesome vocal performance by "Jumpin' Jack" Steve. I find it truly amazing that Steve can even sing at all as he does a 100 minute plus performance that is a cross between singing, playing instruments, full-blown calisthenics and jazzercise (all at the same time). Not many singers would have any breath left after 10 minutes of this. However, he will hit a wrong note on the keyboards every now and again--something he used to never do in the early days when he just sat behind his organ and just play and sing. Although I enjoyed his ultra-energetic performances when I was younger, they tend to look a bit over-the-top, if not outright silly, these days. If you really want to see him in full gear, check out the last 3 songs in the 1980 Live in Houston show. Outrageous is the only word to describe it.

I saw KANSAS at the PALLADIUM in Manhattan in 1978 for the POINT OF KNOW RETURN tour. It was beyond awesome, as you can imagine!

Kansas the best live band ever
So much power, the music just pulled it all together, albeit with faster tempoes. This was a great band.
I saw Kansas in 1978 at The Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, NY. It was a great show. Steve Walsh I his prime was one of the best vocalists of all time. He had 4 octaves. They were called progressive Rock. It was Robbie Steinhardt's fabulous fiddle that gave them that unique sound.

They were actually on Kirschner Records a subsidiary of Epic. Don personally signed them and the album labels were Kirschner. Just a tidbit that gets overlooked...
What doesn't get overlooked is this band live. They blew the dump off every venue I saw them play in the 70's. 3 of the best shows I have ever attended...to this day.
