One of the greatest live bands ever. Saw them at the Spectrum in Philadelphia in 1979. Steve Walsh had a wall of keyboards and would do handstands on them.
I saw Kansas back in the mid 70’s, Steve Walsh was the lead vocalist. He danced all over the place and his keyboards were all stacked and it looked like a wall around him. When Dust In The Wind started he came out from behind all that and had to lean against them just to stay upright. Awesome concert!
I can't believe I found this video!! I was 13 back in 1988 when on tv I saw this, and it was also the very first time I heard this song, and fell in love with it. Years later I'd see videos of Kansas with Walsh and always thought my memory was fuzzy cause I remembered him with an afro in this video. Now I realize it was Elefante all along. Boy, he sounds just like the original recording , and sounds so much better than Walsh live. Much respect to Mr. Elefante!
The vocalist is John Elefante. After Kansas he went behind the scenes, along with his brother Dino, and worked in production. Producing artists such as Guardian, Barren Cross, and Petra.
@@jongraham8396 I like the fact that they started this composition with the acapella harmonies. Also noticed that high notes on the chorus were sung, just like the studio version. "Carry on """"MY""" .....
Kansas is one of the best prog rock band in terms of lyrics, musicianship and performance. Back in the day, I thought John Elefante did a good job singing the early Kansas songs. He has a similar vocal timbre as Steve Walsh so it worked.
Love this song!!! Brings back a lot of wonderful memories from my high school days in the early 80's of my buddies and me heading from Charlotte to Myrtle Beach with this song cranked up (along with "Don't Look Back", by Boston), windows rolled down. THAT was how life should be : )
I love the shout-out to Omaha at 2:30. Journey would do that with "Don't Stop Believing" and mention (whatever city they were touring in) during part of the song too. :)
The guy on the chorus with the higher pitched voice is Warren Ham, who was the original choice to replace Walsh until they found Elefante. He was on the Vinyl Confessions tour playing keys, sax, and even flute (plus backing vocals of course) if I recall corectly. He went on with Livgren to play in AD and sang on Livgren's solo album Prime Mover.
there's not "to sing better" than steve, because HE has recorded it and the style of this song is and will always be the style he's given to it for the years he was in the band. But yeah, Elefante is a good singer.. To be in tune is not the only way to give an identity to a song
SAW THEM for the 1st time this on this tour. Seen them quite a few times since. Sadly I missed the glory days and could have pretty easily seen them earlier
I don't care who's in the band. Being able to see and hear them play their music is a joy! John was the 1st change. And Watren Ham was a great addition on this tour. So here we are in 2024 n only Rich and Phil remain from original band. Still top notch band. What's the alternative? Not being able to see or hear them. No thank you. I like being able to get my Kansas fix.
John Elefante was SO underrated. You know hard that is to do live? One take? He goes on to so Christian music with his brother that is just plain gifted👑. His voice is anointed-you tell me song after song in his work. Mastodon & John Elefante in RUclips search
Come on people, this was 70s! Song probably one of my favorite, next to John Mellencamp, love Paper in Fire video, many more. Just always liked his down home music!
I think everyone that grew up with Walsh leading has a part of them that identied with the way he sang. But, I have to give John Elefante the nod for vocal power and clarity. Kerry Livgren's band AD is an awesome portrayal of his work after he left Kansas with bassist Dave Hope. Elefante did a bunch of solo stuff and helped his brother with a record label "Mastadon Records." Some cool stuff on there for those who like Christian stuff.
For me no one identifies or sings better than Steve Walsh because he was the first voice of Kansas and the energy he produced when he was performing of course he slowed down but his voice still remained.

With singing there's different pitches you need to hit, sometimes you can't hit the right volume, sometimes you lose your voice, you need to keep a steady pitch and volume which can be extremely difficult. That's why singing is harder for everyone. Not everybody has the right voice to do so, and not everybody can even sing perfectly. Voice is an instrument that is impossible for anybody to master due to so many different voices. Drums can start out hard, but anybody can master them over time.
@grindmaggots666 No, the studio version was sung by Steve Walsh, this one is done by his temporary replacement, John Elefante. Walsh is back with the band now, so if you go see them in concert you'll get to see a live performance from the original voice!
Steve will always sing it better than anyone, but my point was it was too bad the way "partying" ended up affecting Steve's voice too early, because to me he had one of the best ,if not the best rock vocals I have heard. I have seen them 3 times. And they were peaking on the "Monolith" tour.
Still Listen to Kansas... My Daughter Loves This Song. Born 2001
😂
One of the greatest live bands ever. Saw them at the Spectrum in Philadelphia in 1979. Steve Walsh had a wall of keyboards and would do handstands on them.
Dude has a great voice! Really miss the talent from the 70's/80's.
Check out John Elefante's solo albums. Great writing and his voice is still exellent.
Because in those times, people had been singing in reality, not with computers, the big parts of them...
Blame it on the AI nowadays...😂
One of my top 5 fave songs ever. Kansas is simply timeless.
I saw Kansas back in the mid 70’s, Steve Walsh was the lead vocalist. He danced all over the place and his keyboards were all stacked and it looked like a wall around him. Walsh was the man when he came to Canada.
It was even better in person.
you know a bands good when the live version is better than the recorded version! :D
The vocalist is John Elefante. After Kansas he went behind the scenes, along with his brother Dino, and worked in production. Producing artists such as Guardian, Barren Cross, and Petra.
Ok, but if you want John Elefante voice, you can check Mastedon and his solo albums
Petra the greatest of all😍🙏😉
Dont forget about Packaderm Records the brothers had
When music had meaning and no trying out for a TV show to make it into the industry.
At 2:32 when he sings the word "SAY", John's voice is clear as a bell! It's the little things in life that make me smile :)
I read this comment in the exact moment I've watched in the video😅
RICH WILLIAMS AND KERRY DUELING IS WORTH THE PRICE OF ADMISSION,most incredible guys I ever saw in concert,truly--------------KANSAS HAS NO EQUAL,LIVE
5 stars for John Elefante. Great job, lots of energy!
Ik its very late but I prefer elefantes voice for this over Walsh
@@jongraham8396 Steve Walsh made this classic tune, this guy can't hit high notes

Kansas is one of the best prog rock band in terms of lyrics, musicianship and performance. Back in the day, I thought John Elefante did a good job singing the early Kansas songs. He has a similar vocal timbre as Steve Walsh so it worked.
Kerry Livgren is such a talent in songwriting and guitar playing, but he isn't the best at making haircut decisions.
This was 35 years ago, dude. Styles change.
I love his hair. It’s awesome.
its look like hulk hogan
@@bobbybanshee6204 Was still an awful haircut.
Hahaha
Thanks Supernatural
songs should sound more like this now days
The best rock song of the 70s
Kerry is an outstanding musician and a wonderful human being ;-))

Still can't beat an old Steinberger for that clarity of tone and punch.
Gets better as the years go by. Breakdowns are quality

You should watch the entire video of the concert. I was here in 82 for this show and we just saw Journey last week here in Omaha
Their 3 or 4 part harmony was spot on!
I appreciate the work of GOOD vocalists.
These man knew how to make history and what good music is!

Good point. The style is his and everyone else is trying to duplicate it. Some are pretty good, but none of them have achieved greatness like Walsh.
amazing vocals
i heard this song on super natural, and every since i am digging this song
Soooo....much emotion...love it!
I love seeing such sights like this. Hagrid and Jimmy Hendrix Singing Together. LMFAO XD
That guy really really really likes that mic 0_0
Their voices!
best their song!

terrific live version. just spectacular
i cry every time i hear 80's music because i know i missed the greatest music in the world
You forgot 70s music, even better.
You know that this song came out in the 70’s…..
Way to go John Flashback Friday. Just hear you in the car had to post. Happy Weekend my friend
Also, when you watch him sing in the chorus he 's barely straining and he shows it in his face when he tries to hit those real high notes
The style of these guys is to good for us. We are not worthy. When you can wear that much baby blue and people still love you, you have transcended.

❤… Carry on, my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more
… Once I rose above the noise and confusion
Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion
I was soaring ever higher
But I flew too high
Though my eyes could see, I still was a blind man
Though my mind could think, I still was a mad man
I hear the voices when I'm dreaming
I can hear them say
… Carry on, my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more
… Masquerading as a man with a reason
My charade is the event of the season
And if I claim to be a wise man, well
It surely means that I don't know
On a stormy sea of moving emotion
Tossed about, I'm like a ship on the ocean
I set a course for winds of fortune
But I hear the voices say
… Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more, no
… Carry on, you will always remember
Carry on, nothing equals the splendor
Now your life's no longer empty
Surely heaven waits for you
… Carry on, my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry, don't you cry no more
… No more

This is how you replace a singer. Not a clone, but someone with his own style, and can also nail the classics.
