Kansas - Live in Omaha 1982 remaster [FULL SHOW]

- Enjoy this full show by old era Kansas! I've digitally enhanced both sound and image (in 16:9) to make this 30 year old gem shine again. In 1981 Kansas was the top grossing live act worldwide and this recording from the following year clearly shows the reasons for that: unsurpassed individual musical skills and impeccably tight playing as a collective. Live the band sounded even better than on their studio albums. I mean, just compare the album version of a song like Crossfire to what you hear here... This is the original line-up minus Steve Walsh, who had left a few months before and had been replaced by John Elefante. Also helping out during the Vinyl Confessions live shows was Warren Ham, formerly of Bloodrock. He would later be asked to join Toto but went on and joined Kerry Livgren and Dave Hope instead to form the band AD. Interestingly enough, after Kansas' initial demise in 1984 John Elefante was also asked to join Toto as their new lead singer, but he declined as well.

Obrigado!!! 😉👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Genius couldn't even get close to entering the class Kansas created. In my
opinion only Boston equalled in talent.
Thank you for read. Peace to all, I always share happiness and Peace.
Sincerely Dave.G.be Happy.!
Thanks for the time stamps.

Robby Steinhardt, the violinist and singer on this video died on July 17, 2021. Robby was the standard bearer for mixing classical violin with blues based rock & roll. He was also a friendly person to fans. Robby will be missed tremendously.
Robby Steinhardt was one of a kind setting the bar for the fantastic violin solos for many of Kerry Livegrins songs. A HOOK for me!
Miss him
@@deborahmoore6875 ....i thought it was a play on words because some of his solos were almost violent but in a good way.
Wow!....how did I not hear about that?....every Kansas member was one of my favorites of all time....do you know how old & what happened to him?
@@MrGarymola Complications from Pancreatitis.
The violent word was a computer spell change.
Robbie is the best violinist ever! Some parts of songs are so intense they are sweet and are so dear to my heart and some parts are so complex that only Robbie and his years of practice could share his gift with us.
And Phil Ehart, probably the most under-rated drummer of all time !
It’s between him and Stewart Copeland.
Using underrated is so over rated
Dale....I'v heard a few other well known drummers rave about him.
@@borisvandruff7532 Stewart Copeland isn't under-rated. He is well-known and appreciated for his abilities. Phil Ehart is under-rated. Kansas is too, as too many people only know their mainstream hits.
To me it all comes down to preference. I could name several great drummers right off the top of my head and all of them definitely bring something to the table, but when it comes down to it give me Phil Heart all day everyday. He is my favorite and always will be.
R.I.P Robby Steinhardt. Thanks for everything
Kerry Livgren was the song writing genius and composer that made it all happen.
Gary Molaskey was the straw that stirred the drink...
I moved on to adding Kerry Livegrin's Christian music that is just as good as the best of Kansas ever was.
@@dgcmusi ....hmmm sounds like you know me....joking but you never know.
@@deborahmoore6875 ....i love his Christian music but his symphonic compositions on Kansas' earlier albums blew me away & still does.

Not even close ….
RIP Robbie you absolute legend.
HIs posthumous album just came out, they were overwhelmed with a thousand orders so backorder is a few weeks. Crazy good material along with some great musicians in the jazz/classic /prog rock scene. Looking at the list, Robby made a HUGE impact in the industry. Waiting for my order, will be a few weeks. US distribution only due to the demand but sure they'll fix it soon.
What a Great Show! I didn't know a show without Steve Walsh could be so good. John Elefante and Warren Ham did a great job!
John Elafante is amazing. What a great voice. I still missed Steve Walsh. 😢
I agree completely. John is incredible and worthy of praise. But how can we just wash Steve out our hair when he was THE ONE!! I still know that Steve's delivery his controlled perfect moments of when his voice would basically "Overdrive" at the top of "No More" 😮😅@@pastorrobbgoodman5084
Kerry, God holds you in the palm of his hand, God bless you for a life time of excellent music. Aloha
Kerry too is my fave Kansas personnel. HIs song writing prowess is genius and inspired!
Dave Hopes bass grooves were some of the best in Prog rock.
A friend of mine was listening and not soon after, "holy shit who's the bass player?"
@@TechGently He was my inspiration to become a bass player. He obviously had some sort of classical background as melodic as his bass lines always were.
@@tomfritzsch1928 Dave's retired, he got a band now locally in Florida playing blues rock which is where I thought his roots where, but man whatever type of background he had, he'd give Les Claypool a run for his money.
Big bass sound. Reminds me of C. Squire.
In the 80's, Kansas's live sound had to be heard to be believed. They put on an amazing live show. Incredible musicians.
Loads of great songs they did not play
I saw them 6 times starting with their first tour after releasing their first album. 1974, South Bend, IN. Mott the Hoople opened and Queen was supposed to follow but their guitar player got sick and a new band was introduced - KANSAS. I fell in love and saw them more often than any other band. Their music from 1974-1990 is my favorite.
I'd recommend seeing them if they come around your way these days. It's still not the golden age but they haven't sounded as good as they do now in multiple decades.
Garth Brooks said it best.....I don't know what I just saw but it was incredible.
Saw them three times with Steve Walsh. Jaw-dropping great.
oh Lord, this is a band from the other world! They were long ahead of their time with a highly intricate sound, deep, breathtaking arrangements! Oh gosh! LOVE THIS BAND FOREVER ........
I have always been a big fan. Kerry livgren and Steve Taylor two of the most amazing lyricists of our time hands down
great show; John Elefante hugely underrated vocalist, top drawer pipes..
Yeah he has the ring that most don't. Walsh was the best in his prime but I don't think they could have found a better replacement! He nails everything!
Today year 2017 JE is number one rock vocalist in the whole world. (though secular critics won't like to open their ears
Agreed Elefante nails it, and sounds great to this day
Patrick Butler I know that's right!! Amazing!!
Doug Bertram no way could they replace him!!!
I will love Kansas forever. I miss Steve Walsh.
Hey sir
Steve Walsh was fantastic
Elefante did an amazing job,
Dave Hope on Bass also made a huge difference to KANSAS' original sound giving it a precise punchy crunch rythmic presence that was never replicated the same after he left the band.'' HAIL DAVE HOPE FOREVER''!!!!
Listening to Kansas in the 1970s in England I didn't know anybody who had heard of them but I loved their unique sound and would lend my albums to friends to convince them of how great Kansas were. Great times
First time I saw John Elefante perform . always saw them with Steve. Very impressed and thankful it led Kerry and him to the truth. Love you guys.
John rocked this concert
I always forget just what a good bass player Dave Hope is. His sound is huge
@drewrutberg5393 I spoke briefly with "Smokin" Dave Hope and Robbie at a concert at Clemson University in 1979. Both were true gentlemen, and not at all condescending or stand-offish like some others. Great concert! Great night! Great experience! 🤘🎸🏆
Dave had a tremendous style and sound. Meshed impeccably with my man Phil. What a killer rythym section.
@@johnhart9558 ehart is one unrated drummer
Dave Was Super Solid and Found All The Things to Plug Up AND Held it down with Phil.
Music can not get any better . Thank You Lord for Kansas .❤❤❤❤❤
John Elefante, Steve Walsh, it's all good. I love all of the Kansas albums, some more than others. Every member that has come and gone in this incredible band deserves credit for their phenomenal talents.
Eric Valencia Nobody said it better than you !
Let's not overlook how fantastic and underrated Phil Ehart is as a drummer. He is unbelievable, in my estimation.
You said it all, man.
Totally agree with you! They were all amazing!
Not a band in the world as powerful lyrically or musically as K A N S A S. 👍🔥 after reading these other comments I feel John not only sang very well for Kansas he contributed a lot of great songs with his brother Dino..John ended up becoming a multi Grammy winner with his fantastic solo career...a very nice humble man as well 👏👏
And you can see he's an absolute workhorse for the band, too. Not just a vocal prima donna wanting to hog the mic. Such a stand-up guy.
Is JE Af-Am?
HE WAS THE CHRISTIAN LEADER
Warren Ham! Gave this band another dimension what a talent! They were already great!
He auditioned for the lead vocalist. Later, he would be a great lead vocalist in Kerry's solo band.
CDs just came out, their music was incredibly tight, mind blowing beyond all others.
@@nicksm7980 What a find. There are few people as musically talented as Warren Ham.
Yes they were progressing in all sorts of areas which was hard to do in the early 80s.
Glad to see somebody give Warren props. I was/am a big fan of Kerry’s post Kansas band AD - Warren (along with ex Kansas bassist Dave Hope, who KILLS it in this concert!), Michael Gleason and drummer Dennis Holt. Sadly a short-lived collaborative, but still several solid releases. Check them out if you’re unfamiliar with their stuff.
I’d like to give a shout out to all the guys but especially Warren Hamm, who sings & plays keys, sax & flute here. He’s been one of my favorite musicians from Ft. Worth. Vinyl Confessions was such an underrated album & so is this fantastic set of musicians! God rest your soul, Robbie. Omaha got a real treat this night!
I know he’s not Steve Walsh, but his voice is every bit as good. This is one of the best bands in music history, IMO.
He's clearly influenced by Walsh's voice and he's pretty good. But every bit as good. No.
@@szhelm5228he is. Your a tool
Technically. I'm not complaining. I only feel it needs explaining: Elefante had more "ease" in his voice, but less soul.
He's NOT Steve Walsh.
He's not Steve Walsh. No one is. But what he brought in at this time was remarkable. Plus, one of my top 5 Kansas songs is "Chasing Shadows" an Elephante song.
Regardless of the naysayers around here, Elefante's vocal performance here is top-notch. His wardrobe choices and stage presence leave a lot to be desired (as he himself will tell you today), but hey, he was young, and as for the fashion, it was 1982. Do yourself a favor and turn off the monitor and just listen to the audio. It's fantastic.
he's a good singer ...just not as good as steve
I remember this show like it was yesterday. Wow! What a treasure to find this on here! One of the best concerts I ever saw, no doubt about it. I was 17...and 32 years later I can still feel the energy that filled the Civic Auditorium that night, it was incredible.
What are JE records?
Freshstart is the name of a band I was in, and by the way, I didn't follow Kansas a whole lot. Had a couple of albums, went to maybe three of their concerts. Thanks for the Info.
Michael Dean Not as good as Steve, in his prime, but Steve is not as good as Steve in his prime. Once Steve returned, his voice was done. Elefante - as much as I disliked anything new from that lineup - was as good as you can get, if you can't have '70s Steve.
One of the most underrated bands in music history. These guys were extreme musicians that did some of the most complex things. The problem is that they not only made it look easy, but it sounded easy. To the untrained ear it's just good music, but to any real musician that knows, the complexity is above or at least on par with other progressive bands like Genesis, Yes, etc. who got way more accolades for their work.
These guys were Americas Yes and ELP
GGenua I know that, but I don't have a trained ear
Roy Davis and Styx
I never had the privilege of seeing this band live, I didn't realize how many multi talented musicians they had. Reminds me of ELO that actually called themselves an orchestra. Thanks for posting this.
Exactly. I'm a band musician from the 70s and Kerri was the modern day Bethoven of P Rock.
I WAS THERE, I went to this concert in 1982, it was recorded for MTV when they played real music. I was in my early 20's
I saw that tour, one of my several times seeing this magnificent band!!
The heroes this time amongst many times.. The great Robby Steinhardt, Phil Heart & the very awesome Father Dave Hope!
Dave hope and Phil Ehart is a rhythm section that cannot be denied Dave's tone and the syncopation between him and Phil is incredible, with so much else going on with the rest of the musicians not many people realize how good Dave and Phil really are
Steve Walsh was one of my favorite vocalists of all time, this kid was one hell of a replacement, just how it is
Elefante IS a monster musician and was a perfect fit for Kansas after Walsh left. This remains a favorite of mine 30+ years after watching it on VHS! A real magical set! Livgren, Ehart, Steinhardt, Williams, Hope, Elefante & Ham killin' it and having an absolute ball!...it shows!
Robby's back up vocals on Crossfire was magnificent!
Love it more every time! Once you go Kansas you can’t go back !!!!
This is one of the best live performances of Kansas I guess. The sound is just incredible and I think that John Elefante does a very good replacement job. And the guitars sound exactly as they should. Epic band.
Warren Ham added a lot to this tour. Dude can play about any instrument, and high backing vocals. He could have been a lead singer for them had they not brought in JE. I think they were at the top of their game this tour and all of them gave 150%.
My dad paid a quarter, got free beer and saw a show in Ellinwood in 73. A few months before I was born in Hutchinson. They were our state and our band and what a joy to watch.

How can anyone "thumbs-down" this video? Kansas is the epitome of talent and skill. If you thumbs-downed this video, you must think Selena Gomez has talent.

You either loved them or didn't wanna hear them at all. I been lovin' Kansas since Leftoverture came out. Rock on!
@@uncleandyguitarherbst1157 well, talent is talent. Selena's talented as well...
Music, as is all art, is purely subjective. You can't compare an apple to an orange, nor can you knock someone else's taste in music because it doesn't jibe with yours. But yeah, if you don't like Kansas.. you suck!
I became a Christian in June of 1980. Growing up I learned how to play my drums listening to Phil Ehart.I played, or tried to play, just like him. After I got saved this was the last concert I ever went to. How awesome to see this and download it to RealPlayer I may put this on dvd and see how good I can do. This was the last concert that I saw. This was when I saw Kerry had short hair. He'd gotten saved around that time also. Dave Hope is a Christian to.
Whatever Churchy.
I have always loved Steve Walsh's voice and consider him one of the best, but I have to give credit to Elephante, the notes that Steve sounds strained on, John hits effortlessly (like the full-voice high note before the violin solo in Dust in the wind;amazing!) John has much the same characteristics of Steve's voice without sounding strident on the high notes. It doesn't surprise me that Toto wanted him; he's got an amazing voice and would've been a good match for Toto.
EleFante! He and his brother Dino were MastEdon! ;)
yeah wow elefante,..! never heard this!
Steve has a better rock voice though.
Steve was never strained, that's just how his voice is. A little raspy that sounds like it's on edge of breaking on some notes but he's not even close.
@@DOUBLEMBAND not true.
The band sounds really good and they were having a great time.
Steve's presence is missing. He had a lot of soul. Elefante has an alto voice, so he can handle Steve's vocal parts with relative ease. Steve was a tenor who had great range but years of touring takes it toll. Not to mention lifestyle choices.
Steve had a grit and stage presence that was all his own. He's also a good keyboard player and could bang the hell out of the bongos! His Jokester side is also missed here. The manic force he performed with.
Elefante stays himself, wisely.
He does a great job here vocally.
True, he does come off as a bit of a pop tart. That said, the guy has a great voice and obviously enjoys being a part of the band. He smiles a lot. He dances around like a mini version of Tom Jones. From what I have read he is a really good and decent guy.
The extra player on various instruments gives it all a freshness that is most welcome.
Kudos to Kansas for carrying on at this time and playing their asses off. Just like before. Amen!
Ken M. The extra player is Warren Hamm
Well, it's not about being able to "hit" the notes imho, it's about the sound of them..just never could do JE ... it's counterfeit to me..and to me he cheesed out Kansas ..that's just my 2..SW forever ♾️
I saw Kansas in 1979 and they were really good, heavier live than on record. But this is an awesome show too. John Elefante does a superb job and in fact my favorite Kansas song is "Play The Game Tonight," one of his.
My favorite is Chasing Shadows. I used to do that with my band
@@davidsoutar8508
I'm not even familiar with that one so I need to check it out 👍
Mr D, its on vinyl confessions and its in the Omaha 82 concert right after Dust in the Wind. You'll love it!!
@@davidsoutar8508
I'm in Spotify playing songs so I will pull the song up right now!
It's really interesting to note how much that single resurrected the band on the commercial stage, and was definitely the catalyst for them getting this spot on national TV - something that I just didn't see happening back in the Monolith or Audiovisions days. However, Play the Game Tonight was penned by an outside writer, and was originally called "Stay with me tonight". Elephante and Livgren changed the verse, and hence, the title, to "Play the Game Tonight", and rewrote much of the verses (source: Seeds of Change autobiography)
Dude - I don't have words to express this, so I'll do it like this: ~~~~~. This is truly a GEM. I missed this tour, but my drummer was able to go. Another thing: Stepping into the lead singer's shoes of an national group is not easy (God knows it is not a job I would ever want), BUT, John Elefante does it about as good as it can be done! THX 4 PSTNG
Awesome show.. So many great songs to choose from.. Kansa will always be the best band in rock n roll history...
ok i listened to this 5 times John Elefante ...you kick ass ,your not steve but you kick ass i would be a fool to say any thing than great job...miss the magic of the song writing between Kerry And Steve but GREAT Job i don't think i ever gave you the credit you deserve ! how they found you i don't know when i close my eyes and listen ..your great! love this band!
I’m actually a late-comer fan of Kansas in the early 80’s, and I became familiar with Elefante before I looked into the vocals of Steve Walsh. I really didn’t know about the replacement, I thought John had always been with them.
Not even close 2 Steve he's ok
Ya know, once in a great while, the stars will line up just right. Not only did we get one of the best bands in the world to enjoy, we got TWO of the best singers to ever walk the earth! I love both Steve Walsh and John Elefante. These two singers just add to Kansas's greatness.
Kansas is great with Walsh and Kansas is great with Elefante. Have seen Kansas six times with Walsh, Steinhardt, and Williams in the lineup and once with (can't think of his name) who recently replaced Steinhardt. I regret that I did not have any resources in the 82-84 era to see them with Elefante and Livgren. Regardless they have not disappointed each and every time I have seen them. I would like to add that imo the most underrated guitar player is Rich Williams. The guy literally plays perfect.
I was at this show, it's cool to relive it.
I was stationed at a Offutt AFB when they came to Omaha I did not get a chance to go but several friends went to school his concert
Mr. Hope high up in the mix, just the way I like it!
Oh, these where the times when live concerts still sounded absolutelly the same as records:-)) Shame I wasnt alive yet:-D
As excited as I am to hear this concert again, after so many years since, I just want to make a plea to listen to Dave Hopes bass playing during “No one together “ it really stands out how tight of a bass player Dave is…He must’ve lived Kerry’s music, because he really has it down. Thank you, for posting..it’s great to look back at the sound track of my life.
The funny thing is John stepped and did a great job, but the more talented singer is the unspoken Warren Ham.
They brought him on this tour. He played sax and flute and a variety of other instruments. He had an incredible voice. Probably a bit more soulful than a Walsh replacement needed. Check him out on some of Kerry's work with A.D.
Warren Ham..Ft. Worth, Texas ;
Don Smith, I thoroughly agree. Warren is another greatly underrated musician but then again, most studio quality musicians rarely get the limelight. I loved him in AD!! The thing with John E. too, is that he started out playing drums with the band he was in with his brother, Dino. I was surprised to see that in this video, he's playing keyboards & a little guitar. Very talented man. However, the outfit is really cheesy! I guess I just forgot how we dressed back then!
I’m loving Phil Eharts drums 👏👏👏👏he’s crushing it 👍
Truly underated
I saw them shortly before this on the Audio Visions tour and Steve Walsh along with the band put on the most masterful performance I have ever seen. That being said, I love Elefante's contribution to Kansas along with his scorching yet clear voice. He was brought in to fill some of the biggest vocal shoes around and did so in a most admirable fashion. This performance is typical Kansas perfection and it has to be noted that speaking as a disciple of Geddy Lee, Dave Hope is ripping a new ass on that Steinberger.
What a show. What a band. Super musicianship. Thanks for the memories and for the inspiration guys!
Awesome!!
I remember when this concert came out. I thought John Elephante actually did a good job. Although he is not Steve Walsh he still had a great voice. Man, that was (is) one tight band.
Great job. Thanks for sharing this !
love the quality! Thanks!
Wow tks for sharing! truly amazing performance
It is astounding to me how good the songs from Vinyl Confessions sound in this performance, in particular Right Away, Face It, Windows, and Crossfire. Obviously I would prefer a Kansas with Steve Walsh, but Elefante was a fantastic replacement.
This LIVE version of FACE IT is BETTER than the original studio! 58:36 -- 1:02:43 (between Crossfire and Miracles Out of Nowhere)
First time hearing this...WOW! Actually pretty heavy, and the vocals are unreal!!!
Thanks for the upload... You're the man!
Nice work! Thanks for posting!
I have to say that John Elephante is one of my favorite singers of all time (along with Steve Perry). He fit in with Kansas very well! Didn't even know he was in Kansas until seeing this video. Turns out he was an original with them. I have listened to "Windows" over and over and still not tired of it!
Gary Bryant John wasn’t an original
What a great group they were. A totally unique sound and incredible energy
And still are... It's their 50th anniversary and still blasting out killer tunes...
Incredible thank you!!!

I remember seeing Kansas live at the Spectrum in Philadelphia in the 70's they were the lead act.King Crimson and the Kinks were opening bands. Excellent show!!!

Awesome vocals, Good job Mr. Elfante, you add alot
Thank you very much for posting that awesome concert. I loved that era of music and performance. I feel like that early 80s time was the peak for so many bands. Muscianship and performance meant more than just blinding LED screens behind the performers like suffices so often today. Kansas was at their peak in my opinion. Like many fans, I don't think they have ever been appreciated for their consumate artistry. Glad this performance was captured for posterity.
Awesome. Thanks for posting this.
I'm loving that,Thank you,really!
Adoro Kansas, assisti muitas vezes esse concerto nas madrugadas, comprei Vinyl Confessions em LP, e posteriormente em CD. Adoro Chassing Shadows....Viva Robert Steinhardt. RIP.🙏🙏👐

This is so cool, thanks for uploading! Wow, Elefante could certainly sing.
AWSOME thanks for the upload
Awesome talent with REALLY well written music. I love the way they didn't just "do the hits" and stayed deep in their catalog. I get so tired of bands that just do greatest hits concerts, when most of the real gems never got airplay.
Super--I can remember Kansas, Thin Lizzy and Queen on the same show--AMAZING. This is terrific thanks for sharing.
PS I DO Miss Steve Walsh!
Wow... thanks a million! Have been looking for this for so long.
You did an excellent job
WOW! fantastic!! thank you!!!
What a brilliant voice Elefante has!
I still have my AD cassette and all the Mastedon CD's from Packaderm Records. John's voice is just mind blowing, even today he can still hit those notes.
Wish I had those Mastedon albums. I have them on my phone, but I want the cds.
AD was Warren Ham and Mike Gleason, not JE.
Superb show. Thanks for posting. Big fan of everyone here!
Wow! Thoroughly enjoyed it! Thanks for doing this!!
Kansas have 2 incredible guitarists.
"shake weight and an ABBA suit" is all i can see, but i've always loved his addition to the band. like others in the comments say, just listen and you'll hear the band on top of their game. i happen to love both walsh AND elephante's voice, so i'm in heaven wither way :-)
Wow thanks so much for posting this yes
Well done on the remastering !!
This is definitely Kerry Livgren's band in this concert. Kerry lives!
This is great! The band is firing on all cylinders! John Elefante did a great job while he was in Kansas. No singer can top Steve Walsh in his prime though. If somehow the full Houston '80 or Canada Jam '78 footage can find an official release... Words fail at how AWESOME that'd be!
Awesome upload! Thanks for this!!!
Wow! Miracles Oht Of Nowhere. Best recording of that song I have ever heard.
Wow! "Miracles Out Of Nowhere" sounded amazing! Even better than on the album! That really surprised me, considering all that's going on throughout that song.
Top 3 concert gems on RUclips. Sonically, this is as good as it can get. If the core members of Kansas were honest, this is the best they ever sounded live. And yes, I’m a huge fan of Steve Walsh. Record label and MTV changing tastes killed this band relatively shortly after this tour. Check out John and the band’s vocals on Hold On, Dust, Chasing Shadows and Crossfire, heck all of the songs...
Thanks for posting this! This is rare material.
Thank you
