I did the shopping cart thing once, in a Home Depot. Forgot it really should have things in it to weigh it down. The thing flipped, hit me in the head, and I ended up on the floor, trapped inside a shopping cart cage, for all to see. Never tried it again.

Robbie Steinhardt retired to the small town I live in. Before his passing he used to sit in with the local classic rock cover band and play Kansas songs. He grew up, thinking he had to choose between being a world-class violinist or a rock ‘n’ roll star, he made them both work. What a talent. Other Kansas songs have him on the violin and he’s just a genius. I got to see him sit in three times, what an honor.

What annoyed me was Tampa Bay media hardly even mentioned it when Robbie died, or that he even lived in the area for years, but there are periodically stories about Robin Zander from Cheap Trick being a local resident. Nothing against Cheap Trick, but I would equate Kansas as being at least as popular.

Elizabeth, this is KANSAS in its prime!!!! Steve shirtless playing congas with all that power in his amazing voice, Robby alternating the violin with tambourine, Rich wearing a tuxedo, Kerry with long hair….everything while keeping amazing tempo, melodies and harmonies….Unfortunately, other things were happening behind doors, and some members of Kansas were struggling with aspects of their lives during this very time….But, this is the picture of Kansas we want to keep in our head!!!!

It's called "live music" guys. Road versions are rarely exactly the same as studio versions, and artists will change things up from one night to the next, just to keep things fresh for them. Who wants to play the same songs night after night the exact same way every time? That's boring. Trust me, if they didn't want to be there... they wouldn't, period. Nobody's rushing to get through a song, just to get it over with. If you've ever performed live music you'd know that it's like a drug that you just can't live without.

Steve Walsh sure cranks it out singing and keyboard playing. Brings back a lot of wonderful memories and darn good times from way back when!
Elizabeth, appreciate your efforts for taking the time to professionally dissect this wonderful tune for us, and look at some others such as "Miracles out of Nowhere", "What's On My Mind", "Cheyenne Anthem", and "Magnum Opus" from the "Leftoverture" recording, and the title cut from the "Point of Know Return" recording, and "People of the South Wind" from "Monolith", all great music, check it out!

I always loved playing keyboards/organ on this song. I was voted most musical in my high-school senior yearbook and several people told me that my singing the harmony on this song while playing both organ and grand piano (sometimes at the same time) with my rock band during a lunchtime concert was one of the reasons. Kansas is always a favorite - my friend Tim played twelve-string and I played synthesizers while we sang Dust In The Wind for a performance during our graduation. Kansas is phenomenal. I will regularly listen to Leftoverture and go straight into Point Of Know Return and start all over again. Such talent by these gentlemen and wonderful memories.

My grandfather ran the concessions at a small ski mtn in central Mass back in the 70's to early 80s. I remember my father had a Tshirt from when Kansas played a show there. I used to play their albums on my dads record player growing up. Couldn't believe they had actually played a show at the tiny ski mtn. we lived near.

Honestly about two months ago now I did have to go to the far end of the store down in empty meat aisle. So I did put one foot on the bottom rung of the cart and use the other to push myself like when I was a kid to get there faster than I could normally walk. It's fun to be a kid every now and again when you know you can be safe doing it.

I love Kansas - especially the old classic albums. Carry On Wayward Son was always one of my favourite songs and I am blown away by the energy of this Live-Performance ❤
As always I enjoyed your analysis 🥰 Thank you - you make me fall in Love again 🤓

It's their closer at every show nowadays. Nothing quite like being in a packed sold-out theater and everyone is up on their feet singing that a capella intro together. Goosebumps for sure! And Phil always throws his sticks at the end so you know the show's over.

Thank you for your great reaction, Elizabeth. I am a native Kansan who has been listening to Kansas since the 1970's when I was in college. Their concerts are an actual physical event. Please consider reacting to their other classic song Dust in the Wind. I think you will enjoy it.

Elizabeth, at 62, I still di the kick-up air thing as I head to the car with my groceries. Especially if I have a song stuck in my head.

Jan 07, 1978 Cheap Trick opened for Kansas at Henry Levitt Arena, Wichita State University, Wichita, Kansas. I was 16 and there. Crazy to think it was that long ago.

Reminds me of a story a friend of mine told me about a guy he knew that had been sober for 20 years but he found him at a bar drinking whiskey shots like they were water.
He went up to him at the bar and said, "Rob? What the hell man? You've been sober for 20 years, what happened?"
Rob looked at him, a bit glassy eyed but not fully dust in the wind yet and said, "You know how I've been estranged from my first son for a long time now? Ever since I separated from his mom, he's never really wanted anything to do with me, always traveling around, never holding down a job for long, getting into trouble. Just going from place to place. About 6 months ago he reached out to me and wanted to meet. This was just after I got married to Carrie. I guess he heard that I'd re-married or something and decided now was the time."
My friend replied, "Yeah, it was a beautiful wedding. No idea how you managed to snag someone 15 years younger than you and way out of your league."
"Yeah, we'll, me neither. So my son's been coming around more often and we've been trying to repair our relationship but I knew it was too good to be true.", and he took another shot of whiskey.
"What happened man? What's driven you back into the bottle?"
Rob just took another drink and sighed, "You know what I saw when I walked in on them?"
    "What did you see man?"
"I saw Carrie. Carrie on my wayward son."

I'm a singer (not at nearly the level Elizabeth!) and originally from Kansas. In my 50's and have never seen Kansas live (but, of course I ride the shopping cart like that!). This analysis (and recently seeing Styx, live) inspired me to get tickets to see Kansas in concert this summer. Always fun and informative to watch you Elizabeth!

So glad you picked this song. It has a lot of the things you love and has endured over the years.
