Kansas is pretty unique because they mixed styles so well. It's like they took some serious rock, some light rock, a touch of blues, and even some bluegrass, tossed it all in a blender and the miracle that is Kansas is what came out.

Thanks for your quite entertaining reaction to this great tune. _Kansas_ has an entire Universe of great songs that no one (besides true fans) has heard before. Sure everyone knows the 2 great tunes they released on singles --- *_Carry on Wayward Son_* and *_Dust in the Wind_* (which you should listen to next!) but there are many other tremendously inventive and progressive songs. Try the following 11 on for size when you get a chance (listed in order of release) --- and there are many other's --- most of their great material appeared on their first 5 albums released between 1974 and 1977:
    01. Belexes
    02. Child of Innocence
    03. Icarus: Borne on Wings of Steel
    04. The Wall
    05. What's on my Mind
    06. Miracles out of Nowhere
    07. The Spider / Portrait (He Knew) --- _listen to these consecutively as one song._
    08. Closet Chronicles
    09. Sparks of the Tempest
    10. Nobody's Home
    11. Hopelessly Human

Good morning Aileen😊 Absolutely fantastic reaction to Kansas' Carry On Wayward Son😊👍 In the 70s it was all about composition and instrumentation... Lyrics and the melody that supported them... The message...that is why the singers sang clear and enunciated their words because they wanted the public to understand what they were saying... They were poets actually in the sense of the ancient minstrels where their words were accompanied by the background music... words first... accompaniment second 😊 yes!!! you are exactly right and your description of the melody... it is a misdirection of movements... you don't know from which direction things are coming and that keeps things exciting and enjoyable 😊 Have a great day you and Arya 😊👍

The story of finding oneself and the troubles of youth, but carry on and triumph young man. Never give up. It's actually a beautiful rock ballad. ...I saw them at Mosport Park at Canada Jam in 1978 as the grand finale as it got dark and people got their lighters out to flash in unison to "Dust in the Wind". Back when they toured this album for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to Red Rocks Colorado(God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls. 300 miles each way with roughly $1 a gallon for gas on bikes. Hell yeah.😎😎
I've seen them since then with the new band members in Reno (Harrah's former outdoor venue) Still killin' it.
    I still have this LP./Album.

"Dust in the Wind" is the song Kansas is known for (and is one of the greatest songs of all time), but another great song that most people overlook is "Hold On"

I am so glad you got to experience Kansas. Easily one of the most talented groups of their time. They were a staple on my cassette deck back and forth to college in the early 80's. I would play this song easily 10 times during the journey, it (and Dust in the Wind) highlight what an incredible rare gift they were! I love how much you truly appreciated them!

Kansas, by far, is my favorite band! The guy that has the huge hair is Robbie Steinhardt, he's the violin player and he sings lead on some songs. Steve Walsh-Lead vocals, keyboards, and percussion; Kerry Livgren-guitars, keyboards, and wrote many of their songs; Robbie Steinhardt-violin,lead and backing vocals; Phil Ehart-drums; Rich Williams-guitars; and Dave Hope-bass. Leftoverture from 1976 is my favorite(The Wall, What's On My Mind, Miracles Out Of Nowhere, Cheyenne Anthem, Magnum Opus are amazing songs from this album.) Can I Tell You, Lonely Wind, Song For America, Incomudro-Hymn To The Atman, Icarus Borne On Wings Of Steel, Point Of Know Return, Dust In The Wind, Portrait He Knew, Closet Chronicles, Lighting's Hand, Sparks Of The Tempest, Nobody's Home, People Of The Southwind, Relentless, Hold On, Got To Rock On, Play The Game Tonight, Chasing Shadows, Window's, Crossfire, Fight Fire With Fire, End Of The Age, Incident On A Bridge, Absence Of Presence, Throwing Mountains are all great songs to check out! There are only two of the original members left: Phil Ehart and Rich Williams and Kansas is still touring today! In 1976 I was 11 when i started my Kansas journey and still enjoy their music today; Absence Of Presence is a great album! Thank you for your reaction to my favorite band-Kansas!

This is the best song ever written imo. Want a ballad? It's in there. A killer bassline? Ok. A shredding solo or two? Check. Fantastic lyrics? Yup. Harmonies? Ok. Crazy drum fills? Bingo. Keyboards? Another yes. Great vocals? Boom. What else do you want, because it has it all. It's closely followed by Blinded by the Light which you should definitely do if you have a chance.

I was able to see them in Concert in 1979 and again in 1980. Great musicians and awesome concerts. And yes I'm Older in body but not in mind. I love your reactions to music I grew up with and got to see in concerts in the 70's and 80's. Stay Beautiful.

My first paycheck as a teen I bought a small boom box from Albertson's and went to the local records store and bought my first cassette - Kansas.. "Carry on Wayward Son" was the first song I listened too, which kicked off 45 years of rock and metal music.. I still love this song.. Excellent review!
