Some old family friends of ours are in a cover band, and they play this song. The drummer also sings it.. Which isn't the most absurd thing to think about until you get into the pre-chorus, where the timing gets goofy, and the feel of the drums, and the vocals is very different. Dude is crazy talented

You NEED to watch the video for "Panama". One of the greatest opening hard-driving guitar riffs from the 80's... no lead in, no intro... just an explosion of Eddie blasting through the speakers from the drop of the needle. A song about a car. One of their best rock songs in the David Lee Roth era.

Eddie is so missed. The world isn't the same without him in it. Great reaction video. I always loved Van Halen because they were always about having fun.
Love Van Halen, both eras (Roth & Hagar). Another good live performance was "One Way to Rock" from their 1989 tour in Tokyo. It was a Hagar solo but Eddie put his own spin on it. Their album 1984 was highly anticipated. Back in the day there were release dates of albums. I know they still do it, but it doesn’t compare to the old days. By this time Van Halen was huge and I remember going to the record store with some buddies the day this album came out. Crowded, long lines, but the vibe was happy. Album released in January '84, I was a senior in high school, and to this day, it's about the best video I've seen. Loved them guys back then, it was so exciting as an 18 yr old! My gosh, you crying made me cry, realizing Eddie is gone!
Damn, you made me get misty when you talked about Eddie. I grew up with these guys, and that wonderful, infectious, playful attitude of most of the bands at that time. I miss it. We're so serious now. I miss the playfulness, the joy, the appreciation, and almost innocence of that music. Sigh .. the world turns, I guess. Old guy out.
VH's "1984" LP/vinyl (cassette) was their final time together (w/Roth). Surreal it's 40 yrs. ago. Time flies! Along with "Jump", I luv Panama, Hot For Teacher, Drop Dead Legs, and Top Jimmy. RIP, Eddie VH. 🎸🐐 EDIT: Happy they reunited with Roth in 2012. Released one final album together.
"the guitar is another limb for him" You said it. His wife, Valerie Bertinelli, recounted that basically the guitar was *Always* attached to him. p.s., the Diamond Dave was the greatest, but check out "Why Can't This Be Love" (Live) from the Sammy Hagar era. Both are equally amazing IMO.
Aileen, you brought me to tears at the end of the video because I grew up with Van Halen and you expressed the emotions that all of us feel when we watch Van Halen videos and see how much fun they had and how much joy they brought to all of us …Eddie Van Halen was like Magic Johnson in that he was legendary and always smiling and it made you like them that much more !..keep those Van Halen reactions coming !!,
Just a trivia mention since you've been captured by Eddie's unique sound and enjoyed "Eruption" - the instrumental song for the end credits of Twister is by him and his brother Alex, "Respect the Wind".
A.S., for those of us that literally grew up with the influence of the band's music- and the evolutional journey of Eddie's work. Now that he is gone, it feels like there is a part of us that is missing. It was like losing a friend. I saw the band on the opening night of the Balance tour. They were with Sammy Hagar by that time.
Great reaction! Love your honest and heartfelt reviews of the music I grew up on. You would have had so much fun in the 80's. This was the anthem for the summer of '84! Just so much fun and their music was such a part of my teen years. Glad you got to hear the magic that is Van Halen.
Just had to say real quick as I'm watching this, not only is this song infectious as it is, so is always your energy and vibes during these sorts of videos/reactions ❤
That guitar tapping technique that Eddie had...many people think that he brought it into the rock music scene. Well, he came up with the name of 'tapping', but the actual guitarist who influenced his playing and who was the one introducing it into the rock music scene was called Steve Hackett. 🙂 He was in the band Genesis from 1971 to 1977. And there are three songs that showcase his tapping technique: The Musical Box, The Return Of The Giant Hogweed and Dancing With The Moonlit Knight. 😊😊
@@Peanutbutterb00b5 This was country. Django Reinhardt may have done it as well as some point in the jazz scene, same as Roy Smeck. Harvey Mandel, Vittorio Carmadese have been introducing this technique in the blues and classical scenes respectively.
David Lee Roth been a martial artist since he was 12 - heres his credintials.. 5 Degree's of Black Belt in TAEKWONDO, 2 Degree's of Black Belt in NINJITSU, 1 Degree Black Belt in Chinese KENPO KARATE, and a Blue Belt in Gracie JIUJITSU... so yep, np with jumps, kicks & splits lol
Some of the groups I grew up with are Seals and Crofts, Bad Company, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Carpenters, Three Dog Night, CCR, Deep Purple, The Doobie Brothers, The Sweet, Doctor Hook, Steely Dan and many others. We used to have American Top 40 every Sunday night.. We also had The Midnight Special and later on Don Kirchner's Rock Concert. It was a whole different world then. I really enjoy seeing young people hearing the music I grew up with
Awww, I was weeping right along with you! It's such a beautiful song; it was an instant classic when it came out, as soon as you heard it. I wasn't even a huge Van Halen fan particularly when it came out, but this one was undeniable. Gorgeous melody, gorgeous keyboard riffs, great changes, great playing......a perfect record.
I saw that Tour...1984....3rd night in Houston sold out...Roth was at top of his game....Eddie...just incredible....guitar solo 10 min at least Michael great Bass Solo and Alex with his Drum solo....
Jump was a massive hit, BECAUSE it was such a fun, feel-good song with that touch of an edge. The video was all over MTV. Couldn’t wait for it to come on! And Eddie was humble, which is something considering how great he was at his craft. Next do Panama!
There are many good music reactors on YT, but you, Aileen, are the BEST! Thank you for another great reaction! I am reliving my first times hearing these bands/musicians through your fabulous reactions - which feels awesome! 😀
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ this is one of the most beautiful and and thorough reviews of Van Halen I have ever seen. We all cry with you because Van Halen was an important part of our lives through one of the best decades in our history. Also we didn't know it at the time but the 1984 album would be the last hurrah for the original guys because David Lee Roth would part ways with Van Halen for the following year you should do a review of the entire fair warning album it's one of Van Halen's darkest albums the supposed critics of the time didn't think too much of this album but the fair warning album is one of Van Halen's crowning jewels and contains some of their best work that they have ever done
I tear everytime I watch play not because he is no longer with but because of how much happiness he brought me....Thank you my beautiful lady for keeping Eddie's legacy alive ...God bless ❤❤❤
= V H = ROCKS FOREVER!!! LOVED them with Diamond Dave. Hey Aileen, btw, I really like your killer black top, today. See you on the next. Peace and love, girl. See ya.
What you are feeling is desiderum, a sort of nostalgia or melancholia for something you never experienced. The feeling of seeing something so nice, uplifting and good, thinking about the a time and a place that is long gone now, and that you'll never get to experience other than by seeing the shadows of it like you did here. The only solace is that in 50 year some young woman or man will be having the same feeling that you're having now relating to your era, and all the fantastic things you are experiencing now. The Portuguese actually have a word for this feeling. "Saudade".
David Lee Roth was a third degree black belt 🥋 in Karate! That’s why he can do that plus back in the day he ran 5 miles a day to stay trim as well! Hats 🎩 off to Diamond David Lee Roth!
What a great reaction!! Glad you loved it! I was 12 yrs old when this came out and looked forward to this video every night. It was also fun putting this tape in the jambox outside as we played football in the front yard.
FOUR KEYS TO THE VAN HALEN SOUND: DIAMOND DAVE’S SCREECHING WITH WHOOPS AND HOLLERS EDDIE’S GUITAR 🎸 ALEX’S SNARE DRUM 🥁 AND MICHAEL ANTHONY’S STRATOSPHERE BACKING VOCALS!!! VAN HALEN: I SAW ALL THE TOURS WITH ROTH FROM VAN HALEN 1 IN 1978 TO 1984 AND AGAIN IN 2013! I SAW 5150, OU812, FOR UNLAWFUL CARNAL KNOWLEDGE AND BALANCE WITH HAGAR. THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER EDWARD VAN HALEN!!! RIP EDDIE My favorite Van Halen tour shirt is from this tour-Fair Warning. The band on the front with Worldwide Tour on top and 81 with a circle ⭕️ around it on the bottom and world tour 81 on the back with the VH LOGO and Van Halen written in the logo! My second favorite Van Halen tour shirt after Fair Warning in 81. Band on the front World Vacation Tour 79 on the back.
This song was so huge in the mid-80's. Loved it as a kid and still so fun to hear - and especially so when also watching their simple and joyous video along with you. So fun seeing you enjoy it too!
I read a story where someone asked Eddie what is it like to be the world's best guitarist? Eddie said, "I don'rt know, ask Roy Clark! " Eddie was one fine guitar pickers ever and he was humble. Plus he built his own guitars. Eddie was very creative musically. And mechanically. A very special man!!!!
I've heard the same story about a handful of great guitarists, it's probably BS. Ed didn't exactly build his own guitar, either, he put different parts of different guitars together, hence Frankenstrat.
In the 60's, 70's, and 80's there was creativity, vibrant colors, and a great vibe - everything was alive. The air seemed lighter and far more refreshing. There's oppressive stagnation in the air today and a heavy vibe. Ominous clouds seem to have formed on the horizon and it's hard to enjoy the here and now, knowing that they're there.
In 1983, MTV started doing a "call in and vote" for your favorite video, and Def Leppard's "Photograph" had soundly defeated every other video for months. Then "Jump" came out and Jump defeated every other video for months. Finally, they put the two videos up head-to-head and Jump ultimately won by with 51% of the vote, though the vote was super close and the lead went back and forth several times before the voting was closed.
I will never not love seeing Eddie Van Halen in any video or live performance at literally any point in his career smiling from ear to ear as he demolishes the guitar. That man never lost his childlike love for playing the instrument in 40 years as a professional.
The best description I've ever heard of Eddie's guitar playing came from his brother Alex. When they were kids Alex played guitar in a band. Eddie the younger brother wanted to be involved so they put him on keyboards because they didn't have keyboards in their songs. But Eddie was happy to be there for the rehearsals. One day Eddie asked Alex if he could try Alex's guitar, and since they weren't doing anything important at the time, Alex said yes. Eddie and a guitar was like "spontaneous combustion", and Alex knew a change needed to be made. Alex put together another band and moved himself to drums with Eddie on guitar. This became the first incarnation of the band Van Halen that we all now know and love. Thanks.
I liked the way Sammy Hagar described Eddie’s playing, he said “I can express myself well on the guitar, the difference between me and Eddie is that he can say what I say on guitar, but he can say it in six different languages.”
I think it's a shame that this music is no longer made, while millions of people are completely happy with the 80s. Sometimes you still hear influences such as the weekend with blinding lights, which I think is great...but anyway, we still enjoy it of the 80's
When I was about 2-3 years old, my parents used to listen to this album and I would "jump" off beat every time DLR sang "Jump." Been one of my favorites ever since. I've also always had the impression that the last riff you hear during the fade out in this song became the main riff for "Top of the World" later on. I don't know if that's true or just sounds enough like it to influence my thinking, but it sounds pretty close.
Aileen, it was fun to watch your reaction. "Jump" was released in the U.S. in December 1983, & it was Van Halen's first & only #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts. For those unaware about the Van Halen brothers, Eddie (guitar) & Alex (drums). They were both born in The Netherlands (Amsterdam), & they are both Dutch (Father) & Indonesian (Mother) ethnically & American nationality wise. The Van Halen family immigrated to the U.S. (Pasadena, California) in 1962 & the rest is history.
If you love Van Halen and you like how much fun they have then you have to check out their video “Panama.” Trust me you’ll love it Van Halen’s video “Panama.”
So many of their early songs are party songs and fit in at any backyard bbq, beach or boat party. The thing that always stuck out to me was that they were the type of songs to listen to with other people or groups, they're so fun and lively that impromptu air guitar sessions and loud group singing were unavoidable. It will be interesting to see how you respond when you eventually get to Sammy Hagar since for many fans that era is a battleground.
I realize how old I am now, when somebody listens to this classic song from my teenage years, and it is their first time hearing it in 2024.
I was 29 when this was released in 1983, So kinda feel ya on that ! lol
Oh yes🤣...I was 17 those days😏
I was 16 when this came out and went to see them at the meadowlands for the first time during their 1984 tour

I was born in 75. This was everywhere when I was a kid.

Aileen, you brought me to tears at the end of the video because I grew up with Van Halen and you expressed the emotions that all of us feel when we watch Van Halen videos and see how much fun they had and how much joy they brought to all of us …Eddie Van Halen was like Magic Johnson in that he was legendary and always smiling and it made you like them that much more !..keep those Van Halen reactions coming !!,
Feels good knowing the younger generations can feel the sense of loss when Eddie died --- his music will inspire people for centuries
They are so cute in this video. Having fun being together and playing music and messing around.
Just a trivia mention since you've been captured by Eddie's unique sound and enjoyed "Eruption" - the instrumental song for the end credits of Twister is by him and his brother Alex, "Respect the Wind".
thank you for listening to the music that I grew up with.. Im so glad that you can here real music.....
I cried.I got to see them on tour with my son in 2014.Great memories.
The spirit of Eddie lives on through his son, Wolfgang--who is also a very talented musician & a chip off his dad's block for sure.
This world really really needs more reactions that get Aileen dancing... just as precious as the Van Halen boys!
Such a fun song. Brings a smile to our face. Thanks for a great reaction.
Great reaction! Love your honest and heartfelt reviews of the music I grew up on. You would have had so much fun in the 80's. This was the anthem for the summer of '84! Just so much fun and their music was such a part of my teen years. Glad you got to hear the magic that is Van Halen.
I watched this every day on MTV.
Good times.
Just had to say real quick as I'm watching this, not only is this song infectious as it is, so is always your energy and vibes during these sorts of videos/reactions ❤
This is a classic and fun fact the 1984 Chicago Cubs and WGN used it for their intro. So this song hits double for me 😁
I remember that too.
Me too , still makes me sad
Was it the ‘84 team that lost to the Padres in the NLCS?
@@CdnTrader1 yup 😒
@@CdnTrader1 Don’t remind me!
I'm 51 and saw that amazing video on the real MTV when it first aired. Timeless song. Awesome group.
Perfect reaction from start to finish. These guys were special. Eddie one of a kind. The greatest.
Diamond Dave was a hell of a front man! He was so flexible because he practiced Chinese martial arts for years!
He did practice karate but also Brazilian jui-jitsu
That guitar tapping technique that Eddie had...many people think that he brought it into the rock music scene. Well, he came up with the name of 'tapping', but the actual guitarist who influenced his playing and who was the one introducing it into the rock music scene was called Steve Hackett. 🙂 He was in the band Genesis from 1971 to 1977. And there are three songs that showcase his tapping technique: The Musical Box, The Return Of The Giant Hogweed and Dancing With The Moonlit Knight. 😊😊
Roy Clark was doing tapping long before then … tapping went back to the 50s …
@@Peanutbutterb00b5 This was country. Django Reinhardt may have done it as well as some point in the jazz scene, same as Roy Smeck. Harvey Mandel, Vittorio Carmadese have been introducing this technique in the blues and classical scenes respectively.
Loved your reaction. You really understood what made Van Halen great, their energy!
If I’m not mistaken, this video only cost like $500 to make. They spend most of it on beer.
And MTV played the shit out of it
Spent
Just a truly great feel-good song. Love the instrumentals on the keyboard and guitar and David Lee Roth is infectious.
David Lee Roth was a martial artist.
Yeah, I'm sure I'm not alone in my admiration of the band. I'm sorry, but there is no replacing Diamond Dave. Great video.
I saw that Tour...1984....3rd night in Houston sold out...Roth was at top of his game....Eddie...just incredible....guitar solo 10 min at least Michael great Bass Solo and Alex with his Drum solo....
From one Van Halen fan to another, that was a great reaction. You get what that band was all about. Well done.
He played guitar in Michael Jackson's "Beat It",and more... Do a little 'diggin' and the rabbit hole goes deep!🎉🥳
Love You!!!🖤🔥🔥🔥🔥
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ this is one of the most beautiful and and thorough reviews of Van Halen I have ever seen.
Of all the channels who do this type of reaction format, yours is the best. Always genuine, happy, and positive. Thank you.
Of course they were smiling, I heard they were hammered when they made this vid.
A monster hit from a great band. When music did make everyone happy. Vale Eddie - one of the most important guitarists in music history.
RIP EDDIE
My favorite Van Halen tour shirt is from this tour-Fair Warning.
THE feel-good rock song of the early 80's
I was in 5TH grade and my friend's older brothers made us listen. I fell in love . never the same 40 years later
I've always thought Alex Van Halen, is an under rated drummer
I absolutely love watching your reactions. Your joy and dancing around always puts a smile on my face.
