Back when this song came out, I was one of several junior account executives working for a company that held Monday morning sales meetings every Monday at 8:30a.m. Sharp. But 9a.m. felt about right to me to come into work. To this day, I think the only reason I was kept on and not fired was because of my sales track record. Anyways, one sales meeting Monday I strolled in and the Boss barked out at me, "Reilly! You're late again!' I responded back, "I don't feel tardy!" All the young guys and gals burst out laughing as the Boss looked at us totally bewildered! Ahhhh, the Good Old Days!!!😉

In “Hot for Teacher”, Alex Van Halen uses a double bass drum setup. The song starts with a layered effect created by stringing together four bass drums1. The rest of the song showcases Alex’s skillful double bass drumming1. This song is often highlighted for its unique and challenging drum intro2.

Yeah, what the others have said. DLR years they were a ground breaking rock band that had many amazing songs and almost too many odd throw away songs that made you think what were you thinking with that song? But still mostly very good. SH years they were a band that the best guitarists in the world decided he would rather play keyboards and make cookie cutter, modern day, elevator music for the masses, than do what he did best. Now some of these songs were good, but not songs we wanted from Van Halen. I mean come on Eddie, you were an average keyboardist at best. Hire a keyboardists to play keyboards and you stay at guitar. Dream Theater could have shown you how how well that could have worked for you. I feel Rush was guilty of this as well.
Some people say Eddie it the greatest guitar player ever. When he actually played guitar I would agree he is up there. But there were so many times he didn't play guitar or played it in an uninspired way because thats what the song called for. Thats why I personally can't rank him that high.
I don't deny his talent. I question the musical direction he went in. This album is a perfect example of what I mean. You got Panama and Hot for Teacher. World Class rock songs. Then you have Jump, with Eddie playing a synthesizer no one wanted to see him play. OK song but Not from Van Halen. After that, the only other song worth mentioning is "I'll Wait." Which I actually find pretty good, way better than Jump and would be a nice ballad for a hard rock album. The rest of the songs are of the "What were they thinking variety." Songs only Van Halen fans would like.

Muller, who modeled for Playboy magazine in the 1970s, also does some modeling work for AARP and has written a self-help book, Feel Great, Be Beautiful Over 40.
Nonetheless, the Hot for Teacher star has also played parts in other famous music videos. In 1978, she played Rod Stewart's love interest in Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?

HOT FOR TEACHER. Oh the memories this brings back....I have to share this story.
The year is 1971. I'm 13 years old and like most of my male friends in the class we were just hitting puberty. This meant that for most of the time we were brain dead. Sometime during the school year we got a new teacher for one of our classes. Ms. Marshall was Australian and can I say, without being cancelled, very well endowed. She was a stunning young women.
Of course when she walked in the room, most of the male students were in awe and dumbstruck. Being brain dead young teens we weren't bad, but we had a hard time staying focused, paying attention and were ALWAYS goofing around, doing stupid things. This was so bad our home room teacher (a male teacher) put our desks in rows across the room side to side (rather than front to back). He put all of us "pranksters" in the first row and said he wanted us within striking distance. I was proud to take my place in that row - it was a badge of honour.
So it is one class that Ms. Marshall was at the front of the class and I was goofing around with my buddy Ken. For some reason I smacked him as hard as I could on his leg. He yelped out in pain and probably cursed. Well Ms. Marshall marched over to the front of his desk and put one hand on each side of his desk and leaned into give Ken "what for".
Now remember, this is a young women with large breast AND she seemed to have double jointed elbows that made those breasts protrude out when she was chastising Ken. I am sure they were not more than 24 inches from his face.
I was sitting right beside Ken and was unable to concentrate on what she was saying. When she left I asked Ken "What did she say?" He looked at me with glassed eyes and a dumb Cheshire cat grin and said, "I don't know".
Ah the beauty of youth and lovely teachers. We were "Hot for Teacher".

I’ll never forget sitting in the car with my little brother & dad waiting on mom who said she “just had to run in to the store real quick”. I was like 15, 1984 had just come out and I had recently purchased it (cassette tape). I was listening to it on my Walkman in the back seat, with my 7 year old brother next to me, annoying me of course, all the teenage angst you can imagine. Sitting there dad asks what I’m listening to and says “let’s hear it”, so I take 1984 out, it was on this song, and handed it forward for him to put on in the car. Dad about craps, he listened to 60’s folk songs, and asks “who the hell is this”, I’m like VAN HALEN! You just don’t understand me! Mom opens the door about a minute later, gets in and goes “oh, Van Halen, this is new isn’t it?”
Mom was cool. Went to see many concerts with her, unfortunately VH wasn’t one of them, wish it was. It’s funny how every generation of teenager has “their music”, the stuff only you got, your parents didn’t, this was ours. Hope you enjoyed it as much as we did, it was a magical period of time in music.

Van Halen was the epitome of the party band back in the late 70s, early 80s. Back when MTV was about the music videos and concerts, the interviews with members of Van Halen were always over the top. The video for the song Panama includes actual footage from when David Lee Roth got arrested in the hotel.
Of note, Eddie and Alex received drums and guitar, respectively, from the parents when they were kids. They didn't like the instruments they were given so they swapped and the rest is history.

I was in 8th grade when this came out. Our math teacher was gone for a day and had warned us that if any of us got a detention from the sub, she would double it when she got back. My friend Roberto and I didn’t plan it at all but we walked into the sub's class a minute after the bell. I don't know what made me do it, or what even made me think of it, but when she said something about us being late, I slowly turned my head to look at the clock, turned my head slowly back to her and said, "aww man, I think the clock is slow. I don't feel tardy." Everyone busted up laughing and that was detention #1 for both of us. Later in class she asked a question about something and Roberto raised his hand. When she called on him, instead of answering, he said, "I brought my pencil, now give me something to write on man." Again everyone busted up laughing. I laughed so hard I fell out of my chair. We both got a detention for his comment and I got an extra for leaving my seat. Then they were doubled the next day so I got 6 detentions in 1 class and Roberto got 4, all because of this song. To this day it's my favorite VH song.

David Lee Roth (known as Diamond Dave) is the lead singer is a true showman and the epitome on what a "frontman" should be. Alex Van Halen is the drummer and Eddie's brother. Michael Anthony is the bassist and backing vocals.
Van Halen were a perfect party band; they were fun to listen to, fun to watch and they had a lot of catchy tunes that almost everyone liked.

  • @DamnedEyez

"Sadly", they parted ways with Diamond Dave not long after this. I say that in quotes, since Roth put out some good solo stuff after this (with some amazing musicians...Steve Vai, Billy Sheehan, Greg Bisonette, etc). VH pulled in Sammy Hagar, who had a good career going already (There's Only One Way To Rock, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, I Can't Drive 55, Give to Live, etc), and went on for many more years. (A lot of people refer to the era as Van Hagar...though a lot of people hate the term, too). At some point, they parted ways and they got Gary Cherone (Extreme) in for an album, then back on and off with Roth. That said, they've been going for decades...and all great music. You'll hopefully be reacting to them a lot.

The Roth era 1978-84 start there and progress as the band does. They cranked out an album every spring to rock our summers for decades. David Lee Roth was the ultimate front man and Sammy Hagar has a lasting voice that still sounds good today

True story. Used to manage a music store in Cleveland back in 1995. Drum sales guy quit and on his last day he had a request. He wanted to hear this song. Myself and our audio guy hooked up every amp and speaker in the place. Probably 25,000 watts thru at least 30 JBL stage speakers. Cranked the hell out of it. So loud that we had to go out into the front parking lot. Actually shattered 2 storefront windows. Love this tune. Love the memory. On another note: Aileen...you are a wonderful human being. Love your reactions. God bless you and stay groovy!

TOTALLY appropriate response to the opening sequence and its sound effects: From Waldos' mom squeegeeing his hair down...to her "moaning"...to Waldos muted cries for help as the bus drives off.
Is it any wonder that one of the first sounds we hear is a car crash, or, that Waldo feels that his socks are too loose? 😵‍💫LOL
And if I'd have had a high school teacher that looked like Lillian Mueller, I wouldn't have been able to pay attention enough to learn the actual academics I was supposed to be learning there in the first place either. 😉

Of all of the bands that came out of the 'Hair Metal Scene' of Los Angeles and Sunset Strip. Van Halen is the most fun and drew the largest audience of girls for the hard rock scene. For fun check out 'Ice Cream Man' or 'Happy Trails' they show a different side of the band in the early years. For just plain amazing rockers: 'Running with the Devil'; 'Unchained'; 'Jamies Crying'; 'Everybody wants Some'; and many, many more. Then there was the Sammy Hagar era of the band when David Lee Roth the singer you saw here was replaced. Great reaction and thanks for sharing.

In that opening sequence with Waldo and his mom Waldo’s voice is done by Phil Hartman, an SNL alum. One of the most talented and versatile Not Ready For Prime Time Players, Phil’s life was cut short when he was murdered by his wife in a tragic murder/suicide when he was just 49 years old.

Everything about that era of Van Halen is unique-David Lee Roth’s voice and technique is completely distinct, and you noticed the particular sound in the solo section, how each member and their distinct sound make something singular. Those great musical relationships-Rush, Yes, AC/DC, so many greats-they share something special, and we are blessed to hear it.

David Lee Roth was incredibly acrobatic back in the day. Part of it was down to the fact he trained in various martial arts, Kung Fu, Jeet kun do and Karate. He also practiced sword fighting.
I think it was all that that he translated into his stage moves. (wait til you see his high kicks etc)
