Genesis GV60 v's Mercedes EQA - Does Genesis make a more premium car than Mercedes-Benz???

  • Once upon a time, Mercedes-Benz were the preserve of the privileged few. It was a premium brand bought by premium people for premium money. Yet nowadays, here in the UK, the three-pointed star finds it way onto more driveways than Renault, Peugeot, Citroen and even Vauxhall. So what do you do now if you want an exclusive, luxury car that stands you apart from the new normal? Well you may wish to consider a Genesis. This is the latest premium brand from Hyundai. It's been quite busy too, launching many new luxury models to compete with the more established, and dare we say, more ubiquitous, luxury German brands. But here it is launching its latest car straight into one of the most hotly contested sectors of them all - the premium compact crossover. So, the question is, would you buy a Genesis over a Mercedes-Benz? As always, we do the hard work for you and bring you the definitive verdict.

Bought my wife an Atacama Copper GV60. She gets whistles and thumbs up everywhere she goes. She let me add the performance package. When the speaker says this car is not exciting to drive, its because he is not sitting with the "Boost Button" on the steering wheel. A GV60 weighs almost 1500 LB more than a C8 ZR1 Corvette, yet is less than 1 second slower in zero to sixty MPH when you press Boost in Sport Mode. Exciting... hell yes! Build quality is far above the Tesla, which begs the question how do we Make America Great Again when we make shoddy stuff. C'mon Detroit! Show us something 🙏

Another great video with well-balanced views and a pleasure to watch! Thank you. The GV60 styling is growing on me compared to when I first saw it but, I prefer it in a non-matt colour! I may have missed it but, as Carl mentions below, I don't think you referred to the EQA 250+ which has an official range of 324 miles and therefore may go some way to balancing the competition between the two cars. I completely agree with your dislike of the dark grey/black seating with red stitching in the EQA which does look a bit old hat! It is the sort of thing I might have expected to see in a mid 1980s sporty Vauxhall (and I probably liked at the time!) but not in a 2022 Mercedes. I believe, Mercedes 'leather' is available as a no cost option which may do away with the red stitching and may allow selection of a lighter interior as on the first EQA you road tested. I also agree with Carl about how quickly prices are rising. Just last week an EQA250+ AMG Line with metallic paint and driver assistance package was available for lease for £461 a month on a (servicing and insurance included) company car scheme but this week the price has risen to £522. I do agree though that, all other things considered, the EQA is still relatively good value.

Since I wrote my comments I asked at my local Mercedes dealership, and according to the salesman I spoke to, leather is only available on the sport, for all other models in the EQA range black/dark grey Alcantara and red stitching is the only interior trim available!

You definitely get the new ‚premium‘ for more value for money. This is only an EQA but I was driving the EQE350+ for a week costing three times as much as my EV6 AWD and would never change. There is anyhow no more prestige from the sinking ⭐️ as here mostly young people from Balkan lease that cars on the cost of their parents. So at the golf club anyhow most are driving S3XY now. The Hyundai 800 Volts-platform actually beats any German ‚premium‘ and design and finition definitely are at the same level plus you choose from three different concepts where most is included and not on a 10 pages list easily tripple the price. That time since Tesla is over. Also regarding TCO and for people in business the Koreans made the point.😂😎🇨🇭

FYI With the EQA you don’t need to have that home charger in the boot. If you have a wall charger that’s redundant. The charging cable for street chargers fits under the lift up panel. Which is hardly used either in my experience.

The Genesis GV60 has a fault which means that, depending upon the angle the car is parked when it rains, water gets into the cabin air filter. This prevents air getting into the cabin and means the windscreen can’t demist. For us this made for a dangerous journey at night time in the rain on a motorway. We rejected our first car because of this. Two intermediate loan cars had the problem and our new car (later model year) also has the problem.
We were the first owners to identify this and now others are seeing the problem.
Genesis UK have acknowledged the problem and say the factory is working on a fix. They have not given a date for the fix and not said if they will proactively retrofit it to all existing cars.
    This demonstrates the problem.

We have to point out where the Mercedes trails it’s rivals, and like it or not, this is a £50k car and so may be the main family car in a household at that price. That’s the point of the comparisons, to point out where one car wins over the other. In this case the Genesis is the more commodious car, and the Mercedes disappoints.
