Genesis GV60 v's Mercedes EQA - Does Genesis make a more premium car than Mercedes-Benz???

- Once upon a time, Mercedes-Benz were the preserve of the privileged few. It was a premium brand bought by premium people for premium money. Yet nowadays, here in the UK, the three-pointed star finds it way onto more driveways than Renault, Peugeot, Citroen and even Vauxhall. So what do you do now if you want an exclusive, luxury car that stands you apart from the new normal? Well you may wish to consider a Genesis. This is the latest premium brand from Hyundai. It's been quite busy too, launching many new luxury models to compete with the more established, and dare we say, more ubiquitous, luxury German brands. But here it is launching its latest car straight into one of the most hotly contested sectors of them all - the premium compact crossover. So, the question is, would you buy a Genesis over a Mercedes-Benz? As always, we do the hard work for you and bring you the definitive verdict.

I signed a contract for the Genesis GV60 last month. A very lovely Genesis GV60.
what colour did you go for
@@lawrenc1754 I signed nearly 2 ago and we went the mint version
@@lawrenc1754 I like the white
I've had a GV60 Sport for 6 months now and love it. I only wish it would charge at 10amp with the 3pin charger they supply. Mine won't but the loan car Genesis lent me while my heater was being fixed would..... Work that one out, Genesis can't/won't.
what does it charge at? Are you US, Europe or UK?
Genesis for me as well.
Also, interior and exterior looking amaaaaaaazing!!! 💕
Have owned the GV60 for about a month now. Really love it. Bought the performance because that’s all I could get a hold of. Have never touched the boost because sport mode punching the pedal already puts me out of my comfort zone.
Very good balanced review. I’d go for the GV60. The high tech and overall design package is exciting and innovative, plus it has 5 years servicing where ‘they come to you’ , Genesis personal assistant and amazing warranty package. They are definitely raising the standards as car makers imo.
The Genesis is the best choice, I think. Do like the EQA interior more.
That sales figures you mention makes me wonder if you earn more or the cars are more cheap. Those sale stats on premium cars are insanely high?!
Bought my wife an Atacama Copper GV60. She gets whistles and thumbs up everywhere she goes. She let me add the performance package. When the speaker says this car is not exciting to drive, its because he is not sitting with the "Boost Button" on the steering wheel. A GV60 weighs almost 1500 LB more than a C8 ZR1 Corvette, yet is less than 1 second slower in zero to sixty MPH when you press Boost in Sport Mode. Exciting... hell yes! Build quality is far above the Tesla, which begs the question how do we Make America Great Again when we make shoddy stuff. C'mon Detroit! Show us something 🙏
The optional Genesis Outdoor pack will give you roof rails, if you want them.
Yes, that was my error. For some reason I thought they weren’t on the Sport model, but realised my mistake after. Apologies for that confusion from me.
Changed my order for ioniq5 to the premium GV60. ioniq delivery delays are shocking went from 6mths delivery to 12mths+. Ordered the GV60 yesterday and should be here before Christmas.
Really good review and nice to see it as a side by side but different to the normal standalone ones.
very insightful review - thanks a lot!
I always enjoy your calm and eloquent presentation... it's sort of an automotive meditation. And that Scottish accent is just a bonus. I'm going to have to go with the GV60.
Thank you! 😃
Fantastic review very informative. Both are on my company car list, obviously without being able to spec either up with exception of colour. I think this video has helped me to finally make up my mind. 🍻
Fantastic review video, I think you’ve swayed me to the Hanauma mint exterior. It looks so much better in real life. Thank you
Excellent Video , I really enjoyed it.
Thank you very much!
Great interesting video and good food for thought. ✅👍👍👍👍👍👍✅
Another great video with well-balanced views and a pleasure to watch! Thank you. The GV60 styling is growing on me compared to when I first saw it but, I prefer it in a non-matt colour! I may have missed it but, as Carl mentions below, I don't think you referred to the EQA 250+ which has an official range of 324 miles and therefore may go some way to balancing the competition between the two cars. I completely agree with your dislike of the dark grey/black seating with red stitching in the EQA which does look a bit old hat! It is the sort of thing I might have expected to see in a mid 1980s sporty Vauxhall (and I probably liked at the time!) but not in a 2022 Mercedes. I believe, Mercedes 'leather' is available as a no cost option which may do away with the red stitching and may allow selection of a lighter interior as on the first EQA you road tested. I also agree with Carl about how quickly prices are rising. Just last week an EQA250+ AMG Line with metallic paint and driver assistance package was available for lease for £461 a month on a (servicing and insurance included) company car scheme but this week the price has risen to £522. I do agree though that, all other things considered, the EQA is still relatively good value.
Since I wrote my comments I asked at my local Mercedes dealership, and according to the salesman I spoke to, leather is only available on the sport, for all other models in the EQA range black/dark grey Alcantara and red stitching is the only interior trim available!
DEF I WOULD PICK GV60
wondering if there is a *physical button* to switch the 360° cam on/off. I use it a lot in my current car and would not like to miss it.
I have ordered the GV60, delivery in November 2022. EQA not in 2022 available….
A very good, in depth video. I actually prefer the outside looks of the Mercedes and the inside looks of the Genesis! It’s incredible how EV’s have progressed in the last few years (and so has Lochmaben!!)
Please confirm the range. I just purchased one a few days ago and the performance model (dual motor) is 250 miles or so.
Get the GV60 delivered next week. Looking forward to driving it after the review
Did you test different driving modes? Comfort v. Performance?
I have driven both, unfortunately not at the same time or over the same roads. I had the single motor GV60 and thought it handled the bumps as well as the EQA. The GV60 is also much more practical with a bigger boot, a frunk and more room for adults in the rear seats.
wtf is a frunk ?
@@rivergladesgardenrailroad8834 An EV has a much smaller engine so there is space for storage under the bonnet/hood (depending on where you are from). This became known as a front boot/trunk or froot/frunk.
Great review , I bought the GV 60 1 month ago it is really amazing , I live in Canada so the Advance and the Performance both have the same interior trim level which is very nice the car is so quiet and smooth , I did a lot of research and test drives on EV''s i ended up ordering the Ioniq 5 but the back orders are so long after almost a year i had the chance of the GV 60 so i bought it love it the range is good i am getting 300 + miles per charge mine is the Advance AWD i really did not find the Performances much different yes of course the boost button was very fast for 10 seconds and then you can push it again but really how often are you going to use it for me it was not worth $10K more .
Great unbiased review! Alot of ppl get caught up with the German brand names too much. Looks are subjective. But I feel MB cars are looking the same. Maybe there's so many around. And as you mentioned, its no longer unique on the road anymore.
I have owned a Tesla model Y, and currently own a Polestar 2, which I absolutely adore. I also have an ionic 5 and a gv60 on order which I'm going to trade in the ioniq 5 for. I'd take the EQA tho if it was readily available in Canada
Shame the Premium trim wasn't available as that's what I've gone for but all reviews focus on sport plus. Nonetheless great review thanks
nice review. i like both cars but would probably select the Genesis or one of its sister cars
You definitely get the new ‚premium‘ for more value for money. This is only an EQA but I was driving the EQE350+ for a week costing three times as much as my EV6 AWD and would never change. There is anyhow no more prestige from the sinking ⭐️ as here mostly young people from Balkan lease that cars on the cost of their parents. So at the golf club anyhow most are driving S3XY now. The Hyundai 800 Volts-platform actually beats any German ‚premium‘ and design and finition definitely are at the same level plus you choose from three different concepts where most is included and not on a 10 pages list easily tripple the price. That time since Tesla is over. Also regarding TCO and for people in business the Koreans made the point.😂😎🇨🇭
FYI With the EQA you don’t need to have that home charger in the boot. If you have a wall charger that’s redundant. The charging cable for street chargers fits under the lift up panel. Which is hardly used either in my experience.
Gv60 is a MUST in different color than this in video. It has to show amazing contrasts! White is the best
You called the trim level for the Genesis, ‘Performance’. There is no Performance trim in the U.K. It goes Premium, Sport and Sport Plus.
Would also be good if you could shoot more B roll. So when you’re sat in the front seat describing the cabin, show us some close ups of what you’re talking about rather than just that static shot.
But great to see the comparison as I have a GV60 on order to replace my Model Y. Thanks.
I'm curious when did you get the Model Y and why are you changing it?
Aren’t the Genesis metal details in the cabin real aluminium?
No, plastic.
No mention of what the road noise is in the cabins. Should be part of any review. Genesis sounded quieter.
Mercedes use to be good. Use to be unique now it’s every second car on the road and more units sold then taxis even the police have them and now they scream out $29990.
Yes
Fun comparison, keep up the great content👍 I can’t help but think that the GV60 exterior is simply a rounded and slightly squished Ionic 5 so not offensive🤣
Thanks for watching!
I like both of these cars, nice review. Mercedes have increased the battery size on the 250 (now 250+) and price now starts at £50510, AMG line is now £52010. A year back one dealer was offering the Sport at £39000 .... oh how times have changed.
Genesis all day. The Germans are pumping out boring bland overpriced cars and the Koreans seen an opportunity to get a head start on the Ev Ranges. It worked as the GV60 Will be on my drive soon . What a great car
Do let us know how you get on with the car. We are going to be reviewing the Genesis Electrified G80 soon, so be sure to tune in for that one! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
I’m extremely happy with my EQA Premium. I went with silver, which suits it much better. No complaints.
No electric seats are available on the Mercedes - this is a £50k car!
they are available,...
@@Markus-zb5zd - I asked my local Mercedes dealer about a week ago and they said they weren’t. I know they were available at the cars launch, but have been withdrawn since then.
@@jedoka maybe that's a UK thing then, over here in Germany I can order them.
And the one I get delivered end of this months has them as well.
Maybe it's something about the AMG Line Seats? As I went with the electric Art Style.
@@Markus-zb5zd interesting - glad to hear you can get them in Germany. I wonder why not here in the UK - unfortunately it put me off buying one.
@@jedoka I'd guess the UK might not be the primary market and with limited supply it seems the UK just gets the short stick compared to the EU
What is it with car reviewers and rear wipers? My Audi A2 doesn’t have or need one because it is designed such it isn’t necessary. I suspect the G60 is equally well designed. Criticising a vehicle because it is well designed is really really peculiar journalism.
It’s just practicality John. I’m not sure whereabouts in the world you are, but on a rainy day, when you have to reverse, it’s nice to be able to clear the rear screen to get a better view out. It’s fine at speed, of course, as the airflow clears it. And before you say “rear camera” if they are positioned like they are in some cars, the tend to get get dirty and the image isn’t clear. That’s all. I’m just a practical old fussy duddy…..
@@AutoEV I live in the UK and owned my A2 for 18 years, which doesn't of course have a rear camera, and NEVER found it an issue that the car doesn't have a rear wiper. The A2 only has one front wiper and that is not a problem either. Why would it be as it is just a sign that a car is well designed. If the G60 doesn't need a rear wiper why give it one? Pander to journalists? One day (before this one dies) I'll find a car that is as well designed as the A2, hopefully. As an architect I would like to be able to afford and drive well designed cars, so the G60 is on what will probably remain a wish list since £50,000 is way out of the reach for this chartered professional :-)
@@AutoEV I'm the owner of GV60. In Korea, There are four seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter in Korea. when it snows or a lot or rains without the rear wipers, There was no any inconvenience. This is because the airflow clears it as mentioned in comment and It is also a trend to remove real wipers for better design in Korea. Thank you for your nice video.
Waited until facial recognition on uk car
Genesis GV60 👍
Tesla are on to this planning to offer uk tesla drivers insurance, Supposed to start by the end of the year moving into the energy market as well. Basically they need to offer cheaper insurance. I ain’t ever paying over a grand for insurance for a Tesla that a bloody joke. New model 3 is out make no difference if you are getting ripped of with insurance.
tbh,... I had the choice between both, the EQA and the GV60
I chose the EQA, mainly because of the interior and the software
The small boot space is no problem for me, I actually want to see smaller cars electrified,... but looking at ID.3 and Cupra Born,... they are about as big as the EQA
Also for the EQA I'd always go for the Electric Art package instead of the AMG Style
The Benz looks rather pedestrian and very dated in design. I'd go GV60 in a flash.
Beckbury road Birmingham
??? Eh???
EQA for me.
Genesis will be much better quality also. My experience of Mercedes with the new C220d back in 2014 was shocking. Never again.
Genesis gv60 est de meilleure qualité que mercedes eqa. Vous le saurez quand vous l'essaierez vous-même.
Judging a brand's quality on one of their lowest tier vehicles 😏
@@DQ333 it applies to all tiers of Mercedes… their all unreliable…
The Genesis GV60 has a fault which means that, depending upon the angle the car is parked when it rains, water gets into the cabin air filter. This prevents air getting into the cabin and means the windscreen can’t demist. For us this made for a dangerous journey at night time in the rain on a motorway. We rejected our first car because of this. Two intermediate loan cars had the problem and our new car (later model year) also has the problem.
We were the first owners to identify this and now others are seeing the problem.
Genesis UK have acknowledged the problem and say the factory is working on a fix. They have not given a date for the fix and not said if they will proactively retrofit it to all existing cars.
This demonstrates the problem.

Benz over genesis anyway but if anyone picked EQA over GV60 then you are delusional.
You need to compare apples to apples, if you are going to bring an EQA250 "AMG" package then you should've brought a GV60 performance 0-62 in 3.8 sec so no comparison there!
GLA has much better navigation but a terrible android auto and apple car play, it use only a little over half of the infotainment screen
The GV60 we had was a Performance model, but that isn’t the comparable car to the EQA250, hence why we quoted figures for the model that was. The GV60 Performance is a much more powerful car than the EQA250.
Gv60 is much better 👍
EQAAA - stop saying you want more space in the back of the smaller cars, what are you doing in there, do you own a top hat? We don't need wider longer small cars, that's what medium or large cars are for, stop it
It’s not bigger cars I’m suggesting, but better packaging of those cars. We have to point out where the Mercedes trails it’s rivals, and like it or not, this is a £50k car and so may be the main family car in a household at that price. That’s the point of the comparisons, to point out where one car wins over the other. In this case the Genesis is the more commodious car, and the Mercedes disappoints.
@@AutoEV With you on this one, packaging is what it's all about. The size of the vehicle on the outside does not indicate a more specious interior. The Berlingo is a case in point, huge boot but limited space in the rear. A sliding rear seat would fix it.
When I look for a car being tall, first thing I look for is driver space/comfort and then if someone can sit behind my seat position. If a car can do those two (most fail) it's pretty much sold to me. Boot space, style, colours, performance I couldn't care in the slightest as most cars are not suitable for me. Out of interest @AutoEV what did you think of the rear space of the GV60 compared to the Ioniq 5?
@@carlarrowsmith I’d say the Ioniq feels a smidge bigger in the rear, and because of the window design, let’s more light in and therefore feels bigger in the back. You also have the sliding rear seat in the Ioniq which the Genesis doesn’t have.
also the genesis is longer and wider and the EQA is just barely higher,...
so of course the Genesis has a bigger volume
genesis is expensive.
You forgot to mention the Nissan Ariya
Which actually feels more premium than both of these just my opinion of course I’m sure everybody will have there own opinions
.
You’re right, I did forget the Ariya. Good point well made, although we are still waiting to drive it, so will refrain from commenting on how premium it feels until we do. But as you say, that is also a contender worthy of note.
Nice joke. These look way more premium and in specs ev6 beats that slow car.
Ariya looks ok at best and those difficult to see AC vents are the dumbest design decision ever...looks nice but not practical and ergonomic
Mercedes is boring
Don’t mistake competence for dullness.
@@AutoEV I didn't say they aren't competent, just their design is not as striking or head turning
