Don't be afraid of this swim stroke. I swam competitively in my younger days, but never performed the butterfly stroke till a couple weeks ago. I watched a couple videos and I didn't know how I was doing, but someone at the pool last night said :did you use to swim competitively?" I asked why he asked and he said my butterfly stroke looked good! Now at 45, I'm swimming for my workouts vs weights and love it. Feel so much better, but love the butterfly stroke! It's such a workout!!!
I’m not a professional swimmer and it took me 6 months of constant every day training to be able to do one lap of butterfly swimming and another 6 months just to be comfortable with it. It’s not easy but with practice you can do it.
Guys maybe you’re doing wrong technique hence more resistance more energy. First practice kicking.. practice more and more dolphin kick. After that engage hand.. do as slow as possible…
He's a pitty swimmer. Look at the video , he's not getting out his head above water. In butterfly swiming method you have to get half of the chest above water. He\s a mermaid :))))
I only respectfully disagree with breathing rules. For longer distances, breathing every stroke is required. For a short sprint, hypoxic breathing patterns are fine. Most coaches are traditionalists and demand every-other-stroke for breathing. Phelps and all other professionals tend to breathe every stroke. I'll trust the pro's.
It's not really breathing every stroke but entire Phelps's technique whice makes it plausible for him to breathe every stroke. He kicks both up and down, swims in the flat position and pulls with much flatter forearms. Therefore his recovery takes much less time, which he can use to breathe more without too much cost.
Breathing every stroke is only good for a max 200. In a max 50 you should basically not be breathing, in a 100 you want to breathe about every two for a good balance between speed and oxygen. In very long distances (800+) breathing every 2 saves energy.
I noticed the slower style butterfly is doable with practice. Not for competitive swimming but if you google the Shaw butterfly there are 3 parts that explain it. I was able in couple weeks to do a decent butterfly.
To optimize your approach to mastering the butterfly stroke, focusing on one aspect at a time is very important. Initially, concentrate on mastering the body positioning, specifically the body undulation, as it is the foundation of the stroke. Once you grasp this element, move on to incorporating the arm movement, ensuring that both arms are moving in unison. The timing of the leg kick also plays a crucial role in the propulsion of the stroke. A common mistake is to kick too early or too late, so pay attention to the timing and make necessary adjustments. Incorporating a kickboard can also be beneficial as it allows you to independently focus on the leg kick. Finally, could you combine all the elements and practice the full stroke? It's important to remember to maintain a consistent rhythm and coordination with all stroke components. Incorporating a snorkel can aid in the breathing aspect of the stroke, allowing you to focus on the other elements without added strain, as taking a breath is the hardest part (at least for me). It is essential to be patient with yourself and to keep going even if progress seems slow. Remember that mastering the butterfly stroke is a process. You will eventually achieve your goal with consistent practice and attention to detail.
I'm actually trying to learn this swim strictly for exercise purposes not for speed, so getting a good view of how the swimmer swims this technique really helps me thanks a bunch. I like this technique cause it uses so many muscles of the body for strengthening which I need, thanks again!
I'm amazed the speedo brand don't focus more on breathing when talking about technique. Breathing is essential in swimming, so to have a video where the guy seldom takes a breath is not a good example.
I was mainly swimming in the 25 meter pool with decent butterfly technique. Did 2 laps without stop. Got transferred to the 50 meter pool and it just kills me to do one lap of butterfly. Need to rest a minute after each lap. Tried to do one lap butterfly and then, without stop, another lap freestyle to go back to the start point, but man, it`s just brutal. I guess I need to adjust and get used to the 50 meter nonstop drills
@Eve Beer this video is right because i train for team gb and ur hands turn so that if they were flat they would splash down and catch the water but when you turn your hands it makes u bring ur hands through the water quicker
I wish you would just show a clear shot of the stroke from the side for a few repetitions of the motion so we can properly see how it all fits together.
Your body line is the shape of your body from head to toe, seen from the front or back. If still not clear, then look at your life size shadow. Keeping your hands inside of body line is staying within the bounds of the your body as if outlined by your "shadow".
The arm stroke is more about the strenght in your upper body, there is no technical difficulty. Things get complicated with the waist and leg movement. If done incorrectly it slows you down immensely. Wonder how can I do that movement??
Yes,with practice you can go as slow as you like except you have to snap your kicks and your underwater pull should still be fast the recovery can be slow and you can glide before catching for the pull
This stroke is so beautiful... but I can’t do it. I got disqualified for bringing my arms up too high once, and I was the only one who signed up for that particular race. 😞
Im nearly 67 years old i can do breastroke backstoke learning free style by watching these videos .I did do some butterfly when i was younger think im too old now .
His hands entered the water as his finger tips were facing out. My coach says this is wrong, but you did it in the video. Is it right or wrong and why?
It depends on the person. I am a swim instructor and I tell my kids wrist should be together, as mush as they can, with palms out. I 've seen this taught by USASwim coachs, but some teach it differently.
Eve Beer Well your coach could be wrong also. So which technique you'll prefer, your coach's or the man who is the greatest swimmer in olympics history? your choice. On a serious note yes, your coach is right if you wan't to just learn butterfly stroke as a beginner, but if you want to go faster doing that, you have to learn what Phelps does.
Eve Beer yes EXACTLY BECAUSE MICHAEL PHELPS DOES THIS.. Hands entering water out to sides.. I do it.. END OF COMMENTS. King Michael.. And I'm Prince.. Lol
as you pull forwards with your arm you sometimes put your head out of the water, sometimes keep it down (as you would freestyle or any other style), the guy does it in the video a few times
Not sure why, but I got it in one class only. She teach the mermaid leg movement first previously, and later the hands movement. 1,2,3 legs and hands up. Has to touch your sides after pulling down, before goes up. For me it is easy movement, but very out of breath. 38 years old when learning this.

No because I got back into swim after like a 2 month break, and I screwed this up so much to the point that I was dying after a 25 easy. I knew I was doing something wrong.
They make it look so easy
Enid Masmela I agree I do swim and it's hard
Enid Masmela but it is very hard ı know this because ı am swimmer
It’s one of those easier said than done things.
I’m not saying i can do it, since im also struggling with butterfly
The trick to butterfly is the rhythm. Get that right and it flows almost naturally.
It look easy until u tried it LOL-

Yes, even as a casual swimmer, I feel the workout part, haha... I also feel the improvement after weight/resistance training in the gym
I’m not a professional swimmer and it took me 6 months of constant every day training to be able to do one lap of butterfly swimming and another 6 months just to be comfortable with it. It’s not easy but with practice you can do it.
I totally agree ! I can barely do 3-4 full strokes before exhausting myself let alone do a complete 25m lap. I learnt it 3 days ago.
That's kinda too much tbh

@cody5631 We are talking about butterfly yeah? Hopefully you wont be turning anything
6+ years of swimming classes, still can't do the butterfly. 15 years have passed and I'm looking forward to learning it once more.
10+ years of swimming classes+a pool in my backyard, still cant do it
@@Clearness122 Let's both do our best :)

this is a very, very helpful video! ive been having swimming classes for the last few days, and ive been struggling to do this. thank you!
And he looks so awesome doing that butterfly technique! A pro!
seriously, like such a beauty artform

0:40 Thanks, those white dots really helped me to improve my butterfly😮
need a lot of energy for this
Favorite stroke and best stroke since childhood. Full body mechanics
watching this isnt helping my self esteem lol

They have a seperate video for it
Exactly. The professionals breathe every stroke except for short sprints.
do I take one giant gulp of air every stroke? do I exhale it all soon or late?
Merry
Nice, and he never had to breathe!!
After a longish swim, I try to leave the pool as they do in speedo clips. But I am usually just too tired and weak to look that good and "intact".
then i just lay there like a beached whale
@@megabruhmoment8 same
Me, out of breath and dampered like tired fish.
My legs literally shake when I get up lol. Even after basic freestyle.
I always feel like I need to take a Nap in the water right there on the ropes.
thank you speedo,, for allowing me to swim faster AND advertise my junk in public
haha
😂
Speedo is either your best friend or worst enemy.
Beautiful! Technique! Bravo. Is this total Immersion ? Will watch again and again . Thankyou ! EiLEEN
Wowww the trapezoid musclessssss, Love this, will swim it to the point of perfection.
Swimmers doing the butterfly in slowmotion looks like a fucking beast. especially when the camera is right infront of them

Silly question, but...How do you avoid breathing in the water falling off your head?
Breathtaking!
This helps me a lot. I’m a professional swimmer, and I have been trying to learn this. This video helped me a lot to master it. THANKS!
My favorite!

big thanks
How does he get oxygen if his head is always in the water....???!🤔🤔
When to breathe ? 😅
Will be trying this.
Thank you very much.
I’ve been trying to perfect this stroke…out of curiosity…should there be a lot of splashing? Arms out at the front and flicking legs back?
Have tried my best to learn, but never got the technique 😢 feel exhausted everytime I got to the middle of the pool
I wish you would just show a clear shot of the stroke from the side for a few repetitions of the motion so we can properly see how it all fits together.
is it hard? yes
is it worth to do? absolutely, just do it
Excellent technique
What is meant by keeping your hands inside of your body line on the pull?
Your body line is the shape of your body from head to toe, seen from the front or back. If still not clear, then look at your life size shadow. Keeping your hands inside of body line is staying within the bounds of the your body as if outlined by your "shadow".
Thanks!
So easy and calm
Err... What about the legs?
I really just need to get my endurance up because my 50 fly is a 25 but then my 100 is a 59
This is a one-kick per stroke butterfly. Is this easier than a two-kick per stroke butterfly?
How to breath in butterfly swimming technique?
This. The dude in the video didnt seem like he even needed to breathe.
Nice 😊

It Was Fun 🤩
Thank you
His form is magnificient! But the video didn't mention the leg kick.
Good back workout
Beautiful 😍
My lower back hurts when i swim with this stroke, is this normal?
When to do leg kick?
Maybe a naive question but can this be done at anything other than a vigorous (heart rate) pace?
Yes,with practice you can go as slow as you like except you have to snap your kicks and your underwater pull should still be fast the recovery can be slow and you can glide before catching for the pull
It's all about constant practice. You can watch as many videos as these but without practice, you'll never do it correctly.
This stroke is so beautiful... but I can’t do it. I got disqualified for bringing my arms up too high once, and I was the only one who signed up for that particular race. 😞
Feels bad
It's so hard to try to breathe while pulling ur arm out of the water I actually can't do this, the kicks are easy to me but arms are hard
Same. I started learning it. The kicks were easy but it's so hard to get my head out of the water and my hands start aching after one rotation lol
You don’t breathe?
Ima 500/400 freestyle swimmer, but I would wish to improve upon my 200 fly, any tips???

They are together and if you rewatch the video you will see the way his legs move together kind of like a wave
I think the most important thing in butterfly is getting reeeeallly comfortable with your dolphin kick.
I find it difficult to coordinate with legs
