Good tutorial. Here are my 2 cents on the right technique:
- Avoid looking 90 degrees straight down the bottom of the pool. This will make the head submerge totally and increase the drag. A good rule of thumb is that the viewing angle should be 30 to 40 degrees. This ensures three things: A) About 40% of your head is above water and creates that constant bow wave in front of your head. B) Head rotation and breathing in become a breeze because your mouth is closer to the surface C) Because of that bow wave and its trough near your mouth, you need not have to look at the roof of the pool to breathe in. Just orientating your mouth above surface will let you inhale/exhale quite comfortably.
- The palm should be fully relaxed and should be like a dead fish. It's essential to leave the fingers relaxed and OPEN. This is counter intuitive for the beginners but the maximum of rowing power doesn't come from your beautiful palm and webbed fingers. It's your forearm. To generate maximum power, your wrists should be bent slightly because this will engage your lats and not shoulders.
- Bent elbow catch and pull is important but too much emphasis on high elbow can cause rotator cuff shoulder injury.
- You should rotate slightly with every stretch in the front. If your body doesn't rotate slightly and if your body is dead flat on water, this will cause shoulder injuries too.
Other than that, this video is top notch.
good points. i kinda had an intuition that the fingers should be open when paddling and not closed. this is not what my swim teacher told me a a child, but as a grown up i feel i have more efficiency with open fingers for some reason.
i'm struggling with breathing in crawl though. i get out of breath after just one lap. so now i have decided that i want to master this, and i have begun to slow down, to let the breathing adjust by itself. hopefully it will come if i am persistent.
+CT2507 To improve breathing, you need to improve your stroke technique as well as stamina. Improve stamina by sprinting / jogging / cycling and most importantly do some breathing exercises. Search for "Pranayama" on RUclips.
phoeNYkx
i know pranayama. have done a lot of it. not for swimming thought, but for other reasons. but it never did anything to improve my crawl breathing. and i have a lot of stamina in breaststroke. can swim about 2 kilometers. but in breaststroke i am very relaxed. in crawl i just don't know how to relax.
last time i was at the pool i concentrated very hard on swimming extra slow and relaxed and it really helped. i swam 4 times as much crawl than i normally am capable of. but i did feel exhausted after. so i will keep at it. i think that's the method for me. to take it very very slow, and just let the breathing develop by itself.
On your first cent, when you point your head to the black line, it actually straightens your spine. If you trouble with that, you can point your head slightly up so you can still see, sorry it is your comment anyway, but nice tip!
The Great Day love you983038909090
I found this very helpful. I love the water but am not a strong swimmer, I hope to employ these techniques to improve my ability, sooner rather than later. hopefully haha *drags self to gym*
I loved the production of this video, the breakdowns are perfect.
right!

I do a great deal of swimming and this video gives me some fine tips. Cheers from Sweden!
really liking this. really vibing to it! cant wait to hear more

Excellent video. So many people waste a lot of energy swimming up, rather than pushing forward. Or they are looking forward at the wall, which pulls the body out of position and forces the legs to drag down.
awesome video
good work speedo
Muito bom o video =]♡
That's snorkel idea is just amazing
procrastinated tasks Subzwari ok
If you depend too much on it, it will take longer to re-learn how to breathe
Your website is unreachable!
Thanks a lot!
excellent.
Nice video
the best style. ..
very useful
Good !
nice!
Missing was advice on kick timing relative to arm movement. I am not surprised by this omission. Most novices are in the dark about this, yet it is simple to teach and is crucial for efficient delivery of power.
So when is the timing of the kick in this style? In breaststroke I have to be conscious about the timing because there is a proper cycle there when the arms begin and when the kicks begin.
Nice.
Superv thanks from india
Good I will be good now!
spreadin' the love about LX Xander & Ghostcraft. you heard any of their stuff yet?
Ion Girloanta ~ Other videos I've been watching asks for the palm to be facing downward so as to avoid rotating the shoulder too much (when you go in thumb first), but I agree with the elbow bent & up and not putting so much force during the recovery phase.
I am somehow able to swim this way the freestyle (with no breathing problems) except that portion which my arm exits the water to recover. At all times I was taught that the elbow should always be higher than the wrist during this entire phase until the fingers enter the water again up front. In the video, he seems to be making an arc and his elbow is at some portion lower than his wrist. Am I wrong here? thank you.
Does anyone know what type of swimming trunk is the one the guy is wearing on this video ?
I love to swim
More on the right technique.... I do swim with my head in like with my spine/straight posture/at 90 degrees. Having the head inclined at all produces more drag, not less. The bow wave is actually more drag, as with the head down, that bow wave, and the resulting dip behind the shoulders and wave over your bum is much more drag than if the water flows more straight over your body. In aviation, they call this induced drag. A lot of swimmers do have their heads at 30 to 45 degrees. Looking at a swimmer like Phelps, his head is much lower, at almost 90 degrees. As for the high elbow catch and pull, this makes for a bigger paddle to pull through the water for more propulsion. If you pull with a straight arm, then that can cause all sorts of shoulder problems. Pulling with the bent arm, in the 120 to 90 degree angle range, this generated more power with less work. I swim a little freestyle, but prefer the over arm side stroke. Much easier to breath, and far more efficient in terms of energy used, oxygen consumed, and distance per stroke than any other stroke. Much faster than breast stroke, but not as fast as freestyle...
Excellent tutorial for the pool but not for the ocean
How is possible to keep my feet relaxed when at the same time I have to bend my ankles?
best video on freestyle ever
Good stuff. But it looks like he's doing a wind mill action. He really has no elbow bend. Mostly wind mill action.
+mistadreadman I agree, He presses the water down and this is not correct. If you press down, shoulder raises and hips sink. To avoid this behavior, bend your arm, point hand palm and arm back and then pull back hand and arm, elbow as high as your shoulder.
Very true. His recovery phase i.e the hand leaving and entering the water is not correct.
Windmill worked good for world record holder Janet Evans, who was 101 lbs, but this fat boy looks ridiculous!
Exactly. It should be the 'High elbow' technique on the recovery and 'finger brush' on the entry.
windmill, baby! lol
I am struggling with the direction. I don't use glasses. If I don't bring my head out of water I am not able to gauge the direction I am going in. I mostly go to the sides in such cases and end up touching the pool.
I am no way an expert but just another enthusiast. I think you have to do drill on body balance so as to not go always in one way. I have this similar problem doing my backstroke. I am able to swim it but not in a straight line.
Tummy button!
How long is this pool endless XD
lieu Le 76 meters :3
Anyone can explain why i got back pain when i started swim freestyle
Thanks in advance
One possible reason from personal experience: arching lower back while swimming front crawl(freestyle). Probably trying to keep head up and legs up and tensing the lower back. Many tutorials preach about staying relaxed while swimming, yet keeping your spine straight. One of the tutorials suggested to tense your abs: imagine zipping your pants... Maybe funny but something to think about. Anyway, my back is better since I started paying attention to arching.
Tanakbyou i got swimming lesons
Its year 2019 and why am i here I'm so far away from any ocean or swimming pool wew

is 50 and 100m freestyle hard
50 is a number, and good to know 100m freestyle is hard :d
Thanks for your opinion! :)
🌺🌹🌺👍👍👍
The hand coming off so high does not look efficient.
Alexander Popov was the best freestyiler
he seems to be pushing the water down instead of back
+ريكاردو خيمينيز I agree with you.
Other videos say throw the water to the back as early as possible which makes sense.
Higher elbows!
or lower hand!

Who's here because of free! ?
Onsay Hart flick that risk I don't care about free shipping just swimming man

Onsay Hart
@@vassi5725 XD he's talking about an anime called Free. It's about swimmers
Can someone please explain how the kick should originate from the hip and not the knee? I don't really get how that works in practice...
Kicking in freestyle is more efficient if the angle between your thigh and calf is closer to 180 degrees alined with your body as it reduces drag from water resistance created by your calf and quads if not alined. Originating from your hips means that there should me minimal bend in your knees; reducing drag, and starting the kick from your hips. Originating from your knees causes a bicycle kick motion with quads and calves not lined with body creating even more drag.
Thank you!!
sounds like Sir David Attenborough
but younger..
Nah, low elbow.
Rvhe
very cool graphics. But swimmer was rotating hips on each stroke and video downplayed that role completely.
This is a typical triathlon's swimming style, not perfect for pool swimmers. There are some differences:
1. the arm recovery. Straight armed, instead of the ideal high-elbow, low, wide recovery, to avoid hitting other swimmers.
2. head position. Usually a bit higher, to ensure effective breath, with waves in open water and turbulence caused by other swimmers, and sometimes for a good vision.
3. kicking. Usually weak, to save energy.
A saída do braço da água está errada e a extensão sobre o ar até alcançar a água está errada também. Esta forma que mostra perde o deslizamento. Arruma este vídeo, pois está ensinando errado!
Iv watched loads of freestyle tutorials, they all seem to contradict each other
/
He needs to do a earlier catch
This Arm recovery type does not work for most of the people learning swimming.
I am far from being even a good swimmer, but this video's technique is just wrong. His arms are completely straight during the recovery, and he takes his breath too late as his arm is entering the water.
Exactly. He should be breathing while he does the underwater pull
He doesn't have early vertical elbow, but his breathing technique and timing is fine.
If you watch other professional swimmers preform freestyle most if not all 10 swimmers in a comp will have different ways of swimming freestyle and even if straight-arm freestyle is not advisable if you watch janet evans it still gets the job done.
Stranger things theme?
Nice video but the Techniques are weak in over coming body water resistance or a level of drug for forward movement. First look at the hands shape that allows fingers being apart so water flows through the fingers that lowers water resistances at the hands to push you forward. With fingers apart water flows through the fingers so palm is the point of create water resistance to move forward. It does create easier arms pull through but you produce less speed in swimming. Question what is the function of hands in swimming?
I see forming the hands to create the most water resistance to create forward motion. The idea of paddles on hands is to create water resistance at the hands to pull the body forward. With paddles on hands the muscles to pull the hands through water are working much harder for that makes great muscle conditioning for swimming stroke but if hands cannot create that level of resistance lot of exercise with little benefit. Finding the shape of hands to to create the most water resistance.
Cupping the finger tips and fingers together creates the most resistance.. Finding the best breathing method require leaning how to have a 20 second exhalation and fast inhale but also realize breathing is a torso development and finding the most effective torso breathing for your swimming stroke. It is art to swim base on purpose. Finding swimming technique form that produces the least body resistances in the water as you're swimming. Suggest look at what body movement in swimming produces the highest resistances to move through the water then make adjustments so realize differences to improvement. The ideas here is a sensations of gliding through the water in a freestyle form that requires torso breathing that fits swimming movement techniques of the body to form your swimming stroke..
nice demo on how NOT to do it
The brand speedo does it swim faster than other brand
No but it's good bc it stays tight to your body and is good quality.

Where is his 'catch' position - elbow bent - which is, whatever method, THE thing all coaches and top swimmers agree upon? He swims straight arms, which is very tiring and not efficient. The guy is quite muscular - this is his only advantage - he can afford to squander his energy.
Thanks for the video.
I must say that it is a rather problematic video... many errors in the swimmer's technique.
1. Massive, inefficient over-gliding on the right hand... very, very prominent. You can see that he slows down while the right hand stays forward for too long, after that, the body starts sinking and when he finally starts the pull with the right hand, from a fully extended position, he pushes downwards, wasting effort, for a long time before finally leveling the hand and pushing backwards. Look at 5:20 and you'll see what I mean. Try to avoid that.
2. Low Elbows, especially in the right hand. Look at 1:19 - the underwater pull is done with almost straight elbows ("windmill" fashion). The elbow angle is about 160 deg, while it should be 100, 120, 130 degrees - depending on the person. The fingers should point to the bottom of the pool... this leaves the imaginary line from your shoulder to your elbow (your arm...) pointing more to the side then to the bottom, unlike what is demonstrated here - where the arm is pointing very much downwards.
+CandleOfGod Yes, I agree with what the narrator says much more than what the swimmer does. 'Do as he says, not as he does!'
at 5:20 they slow mowed it.
Stop giving advice cuz free should be adopted for each person.. u don’t have to do same on vid cuz u can’t . Find the best style for body by basic rules of technique.. that’s it
That’s straight arm technique..
This is a poor example of technique. Many issues here
i agree
I third that and I can not even swim yet ,thanks for confirming @@joshipreeti3621
7 minutes of instructions? Is anybody going to remember all those rules while swimming? It has got to be more concise and straightforward than this.
You practice one rule at a time, get better and then move on to the next one.
Catch is non-existent
another mistake is that he is breathing while doing the recovery over the water, when he actually should be breathing while he does the underwater pull.
No...you breathe under your shoulder during the overhead pass before entering the water. The reason for this is this movement creates a pocket below water level at face height allowing you to breathe with minimal sideways movement
No, no no! Stop spreading lies. I'd like to see you try to breathe that way.
Pfff. ONly a triathlete would think there's a universal, perfect way to do freestyle
I don't quite agree with some of this...
Wrong Guidace
Atul Sonawane hahahaha, u seeking attention? Do you even compete?
Atul Sonawane Wrong guidance? This is a swimming company and they know everything about swimming. I can bet you don't know how to swim, but if you do, then I can bet you don't swim competitively.
Xandria NLR I am competing competitively. then tell us whats wrong. walk the talk
Poor video..
body has to rotate with every stroke and not remain straight .(while breathing ur head should come along with the rotation and u dont need to turn the head separate ).
WhatZ rong with u ppl??? providing wrong info??so sad.remove d video imd
