I basically learned how to swim at age 56, almost drowned at 15 and been in trauma of water since. Got a swimming coach and after 3 months training in the pool, I was able to swim on cross-channel open water and joined in open water race competitions. Frequency in open water also helped gradually improve my water confidence. Will be doing swimming as a regular exercise as a triathlete. This video is so helpful, made the basics so clear to follow.

I took up swimming for exercise about 6 months ago. I've watched numerous videos on technique and this is the most succinct one I've found. Thank you for making this.

Howdy Tim - fabulous video instruction. Especially the head and body posture and the rotation are great advise.
I noticed you didnt talk about the axis , from the center of your head to your center at your bottom. I also noticed your (left) hand position is slightly off the axis. This creates a minute drag in the front quadrant., but more importantly you begin your catch phase OUTSIDE the axis. Definatel less propulsive force .
I've always been curious why many of the instructors of our time do not pay attention to the legs. I worked with Terry Laughlin in the 70s, he attained a huge percentage of his legacy stroke style from us. He witnessed my coach teaching the fluid, compact, pitter patter "rumble" kick to me.
Terry never adopted the legs into his total immersion juggernaut.
Many of us are NOT kickers. But we don't have to kick HARD ....we just have to kick nicely without dragging the limbs.
I did see you pull 1 dolphin kick off of 1 wall. My coach and I invented the full body whip kick in 1969. Off of starts, turns , front and inverted. Not until Berkoff broke both the backstroke marks in 84 did anyone notice. Actually Jesse Vassallo saw me in Warm ups at Spring and summer Nats of 1979.
By 1980 he began training it and using that underwater dolphin. Amazing talent .
It sure will be nice to discuss our philosophy further! I'd like to know more about how the beaver got that way!!

Liked the video and ur nice demonistration .. however , its important to say that high elbow catch is not that ur elbow is high at the surface which is a common misunderstanding among swimmers . It means if u draw a line between shoulder and wrist the elbow will be above to that line ...keeping the hands at the surface will increase the resistant ... it should be wrist below elbow and elbow below shoulder before you start the catch ...... in other means elbow should not be necesserly high ... it should not be dropped .. i hope that you correct that in the video because the rest of the video is so helpful and full of nice demonstations for swimmers .. thanks alot

Really good drills, there's just one major problem in almost all of them.. breathing. If you follow BLABT (Body Position, Legs, Arms, Breathing, Timing) then you'll notice the arms should be learnt before the breathing. So the only way to do these drills is with either a center snorkel or 10m short swims.
They're good drills though, although I'd Personaly say it's over rotation but it's tricky to judge.

    Very nice demonstration.
    I have a question though.
Isn't it better to have a bent elbow just before finishing the pull and raising it out of the water bent?
I remember someone was saying it gets a better finish to the pull (pulling backwards instead of upwards) and also protects the joints.
