I love teaching what is essentially your techniques in the pool. Wish I had seen or had access to this type of detailed information when i was struggling 5-6 years ago. It's a never ending wonder to me that more swim coaches don't teach specific hand/arm placement technique. However, I suspect, they are unable to do so as they often only know how to make people race up and down the pool doing 60 laps or more. This appears to be more than 90% of most swim coaches' repertoire.
Holy shit, the quality and clarity of this presentation is BY FAR the best I've come across. Superb. Karlyn, I didn't know anything about you until just now (plus the inevitable rabbit hole), but I am blown away by your knowledge and skill. Thank you so much for putting this out there.

Fantastic and congratulations! There is a 5-part series with these videos and explanations that is really useful here: vasatrainer.com/blog/faster-freestyle-swimming-part-1/
Superb. I like instructional videos that not only teach technique but also provide the "why" of the technique. The power meter data at the end was eye-opening.

I have seen a lot of swim videos and I really liked this one very much. I actually subscribed to your videos, I think the first time ever subscribed to any RUclips videos. I really like the concept of using the palms of my hands during the catch. I tried it out today and I could really feel the difference using my palm and my full hand. I also like how you demonstrated the power of the catch in all three strokes, freestyle, breast , and butterfly. I would like to see a section on the recovery, hope you can either update this one or create one in the future.

May I suggest that you begin a progression by using a pull buoy between your legs and a front mount swimmers snorkel (if you can tolerate that) for simplifying breathing. Good stuff. The only other thing I would have pointed out is that maximum "catching" power is really hard to achieve without rolling. The swimming clips show the roll, but it wasn't mentioned. The roll allows you to engage the lats completely.
Do you have a series like this for the other three strokes? Fabulous video, how each component is broken down. I can't thank you enough for making and posting it.
Here is a link to a video series on all four strokes by Coach Matt Kredich. He is also an excellent teacher to help you understand the technical components of each stroke. vasatrainer.com/product/dvd-bundle-matt-kredich/

Absolutely loved this series of videos. Was easily described and I felt confident trying to change my technique in the pool this morning. And wow yeah I feel the difference in muscle groups worked. Thank you for putting this out there!
All the parts of the vedio in this series are excellent, scientific, easy to understand and easy to put it in to practice. I find all the techniques very useful and it improved my free style a lot. I would like to thank the lady for the techniques and it's really great and nice of her. I also expect some more vedios on other style such as the breast stroke, butterfly etc., Thanks
Margarita, be sure to also check out this article to gain more power in your stroke: vasatrainer.com/blog/overcoming-freestyle-monospeed-why-how-and-when-to-accelerate-hand-speed/
thanks for the video, may i ask a question, at 1.05- you mentioned about =forming a box position and pull back, My question was when pull back at what distance( halfway?) you use 100% or your forearm to pull back or after 1/2 way use your shoulder and back muscle??? I mean do you keep both upper arms (elbow)close to your body after 1/2 way of pulling action to avoid upper arm "opening"?/ Thanks
Rini, Karlyn's technique sets up your stroke so you use your back and lats much more than shoulders and arms for propulsion. Pull all the way through, hands to hips, but exit the stroke quickly once there. I am very excited for practising thar tip, i never noticed it before or read about it i will try it tomorrow on my swimming practise and see if i can make it faster!! thanks for sharing it!
To this excellent video, I would add that the arm movement must be maintained in the scapular plane to avoid shoulder inpingement injuries, in all styles ( except during butterfly recovery, where you cannot avoid additional stress due to symmetric recovery of both arms above water)

A very good series of videos which reduce my overall swimming time significantly. The small bit shown at 1:50 help a lot to improve my breaststroke. Oddly enough I never so this so clearly explained in other training videos.
I can't believe I watched these video's while trying to show athletes a perfect catch set up... then 12 months later, we were being coached by Karlyn at her Faster Freestyle Workshop when she came and visited us in Melbourne! We all learnt so much! What a great development in the world of swimming!
Thank you for these lessons. it shows me why sometimes am fast and sometimes very slow. now I know what are my mistakes and how to improve them. the way you explained it is so easy and informative. I ll try all of them tomorrow 👍👍 Thanks again

Here is a link to a video series on all four strokes by Coach Matt Kredich. He is also an excellent teacher to help you understand the technical components of each stroke. vasatrainer.com/product/dvd-bundle-matt-kredich/
Liz, the concepts apply to all 4 strokes. These videos have been so useful. Vasa has some great articles on their blog, too. Check out this newest one, which is an ah-ha moment too: vasatrainer.com/blog/overcoming-freestyle-monospeed-why-how-and-when-to-accelerate-hand-speed/

I'm going to try it tomorrow. Never heard it before about the elbows.
Absolutely loved this series of videos. Was easily described and I felt confident trying to change my technique in the pool this morning. And wow yeah I feel the difference in muscle groups worked. Thank you for putting this out there!
❤❤❤
All the parts of the vedio in this series are excellent, scientific, easy to understand and easy to put it in to practice. I find all the techniques very useful and it improved my free style a lot. I would like to thank the lady for the techniques and it's really great and nice of her. I also expect some more vedios on other style such as the breast stroke, butterfly etc., Thanks
I’m doing my first Triathlon and this video helped me perfecting my stroke👍🏻👏🏻

This video might just changed my life now thank you @vasa trainer
Terrific! Keep us posted on your progress.
thanks for the video, may i ask a question, at 1.05- you mentioned about =forming a box position and pull back, My question was when pull back at what distance( halfway?) you use 100% or your forearm to pull back or after 1/2 way use your shoulder and back muscle??? I mean do you keep both upper arms (elbow)close to your body after 1/2 way of pulling action to avoid upper arm "opening"?/ Thanks
Rini, Karlyn's technique sets up your stroke so you use your back and lats much more than shoulders and arms for propulsion. Pull all the way through, hands to hips, but exit the stroke quickly once there. This article can add more insights so you can take the lessons from Karlyn Pipes and go to a new level: vasatrainer.com/blog/overcoming-freestyle-monospeed-why-how-and-when-to-accelerate-hand-speed/

wow that was great.... 2 years trying to swim correctly and efficiently for triathlons. This might have me on the right track!
Really nice (and helpful) analysis - thanks
I am very excited for practising thar tip, i never noticed it before or read about it i will try it tomorrow on my swimming practise and see if i can make it faster!! thanks for sharing it!
To this excellent video, I would add that the arm movement must be maintained in the scapular plane to avoid shoulder inpingement injuries, in all styles ( except during butterfly recovery, where you cannot avoid additional stress due to symmetric recovery of both arms above water)
Eduardo, very good points! Be sure to also check out this article to gain more power in your stroke: vasatrainer.com/blog/overcoming-freestyle-monospeed-why-how-and-when-to-accelerate-hand-speed/

I learnt to swim freestyle only using ur videos.amazing work...please make a video about how to breathe also ..thanks a lot..
A very good series of videos which reduce my overall swimming time significantly. The small bit shown at 1:50 help a lot to improve my breaststroke. Oddly enough I never so this so clearly explained in other training videos.
As a swimming teacher, lfind these videos more helpful especially when teaching adult students
Excellent demonstration, thanks.
I can't believe I watched these video's while trying to show athletes a perfect catch set up... then 12 months later, we were being coached by Karlyn at her Faster Freestyle Workshop when she came and visited us in Melbourne! We all learnt so much! What a great development in the world of swimming!
Karlyn is awesome! Did you know about the free 5-part online course? vasatrainer.lpages.co/email-course-faster-freestyle-reg/?

Thank you just watched Parts 1 to 5, best 20 minutes of swim tips I've seen. My stroke is so 1990s and looking at these tip, it all seems so obvious - can't wait to go to the pool and try some changes
Troy so glad the tips were helpful to you. How did it go at the pool? Keep us posted. If you haven't subscribed to our channel, please be sure to so you will be notified of new videos - ruclips.net/user/vasatrainer. Happy swimming.
Troy, These videos have been so useful. Vasa has some great articles on their blog, too. Check out this newest one, which is an ah-ha moment too: vasatrainer.com/blog/overcoming-freestyle-monospeed-why-how-and-when-to-accelerate-hand-speed/
it really worked very well on me just to change some little moves. Thanks Vasa.
May I suggest that you begin a progression by using a pull buoy between your legs and a front mount swimmers snorkel (if you can tolerate that) for simplifying breathing. That way, you could practice the technique points the coach makes in these videos and focus on the correct stroke path, high elbow catch, and pulling with the strong muscles in the back (lats) and arms. Also, this article will help you: vasatrainer.com/blog/overcoming-freestyle-monospeed-why-how-and-when-to-accelerate-hand-speed/
