As informative as this information is, and not just your content but the documentaries and stories of artists, the realization of how this “new industry” works post streaming is highly mind blowing and discouraging. Just from being able to support yourself financially, a career in music doesn’t seem to be it UNLESS you’re independent. What I once valued and wanted to do no longer makes logical sense. There are still other means to making a living from music but going the label route.. unless you have enough leverage to negotiate good terms and use them how Russ was able to, your signing up to either be robbed, stuck in debt, controlled, shelved or all of the above.
When the music industry finally takes its last breath. Watch how much absolutely amazing music starts coming out from all over the world. The industry is an enemy to the art that makes it even a thing. It’s a parasite. Let the industry die. Let all industries that have to do with art die. Real art will become more valuable and more available. Nothing in the world can stop a true artist from expressing themselves. If you’re in it for the money, you’re an entertainer, not an artist.
If the system falls, there's nothing better to replace it. You guys think anarchy is the best solution. Anyone and everyone doing their thing will have an even worse effect. The general public doesn't have infinite time and attention spans to be worrying and democratising musicians' livelihoods. A hierarchy will arise just as the one we have now because it's human nature. Unless you guys have some secret plan to return us to the vinyl and cd days, then it's a lost cause.

Because if it’s a free for all like that guys suggesting than nobody would be able to get paid out properly, especially because we can’t at this point go backwards in convenience to the days before streaming. As a former SoundCloud artist, I see why SoundCloud is its own thing and not usually the end all be all destination to get your music on the internet. Too many unpolished, not finished and unlicensed sounds floating around on there. It has its place but you do need a level of prestige and professional release for the general public to consume, in order for that music to exist and be profitable. That’s why labels and official platforms will always exist in some form.

A lot of industries are dying. Music, film, tv/cable and gaming, just to name a few. And it’s really the corporate model in milking out their IPs to oblivion
These corporate entities finally get the formulaic automation they’ve always wanted out of humans, through technology. Just another reason I think it’s important we make our necessary pivots.

They';re recording 400 and 500 songs because the beats and "rapping" are all basically the same (especially for the Trap-type artists). It doesn't take much effort to make alot of that music. Duke Ellington wrote about 2,000 songs and that was a huge deal because he was a musical genius.

I made 300-400 songs a year on average,been that way for YEARS. But they aren't copies,i try to make them as unique as possible,unless im going for a CONCEPT album with a uniformity. Not really, as a artist myself. Once you can rap you can rap on anything don’t take long to catch a flow or vibe when it’s really you. Depends on artist though shit really ain’t hard to be lyrical Al all it just take more effort
Underground rappers I listen to sell their music on a website which you can't stream. They sell Vinyl, Cds, tapes which arent cheap but always sell out. Sometimes later down the line they put the album on something like Spotify

All this label issues is exactly why Davido’s father never allowed him to sign to a record label in the early days of his music career, luckily for him his dad was and is rich enough to invest in his music.. His billionaire dad literally managed him and turned down all label and brand contracts if they didn’t triple or quadrille the money... A lotta rappers don’t view the music as an asset, imagine being able to get a bank loan with your music.

There’s so much music dropping I feel like a lot of artists think if they don’t drop a few times a year to stay in rotation. I came up when we only got an album every 2 or 3 years and we really sat with projects.
True. Many industries, including tv/movie streaming have went all in on subscription models that present quantity as their biggest feature. With music I think a lot of artists have underestimated how valuable being prolific in their content output could be to their music career. Instead they’ve thrown hundreds of songs at the problem.
Attention spans are about 20 seconds now...

Its bittersweet to see people actually understanding that its over. The industry had a good run, but its done. It breaks my heart to see people around me that still think of the industry as the way it was back in 2002. Even still, it was always smoke and mirrors. People have this dream and don't understand that they're often signing up to be exploited.

You can't get that time back. Even if you do get a buzz, its for less than pennies on the dollar. Every last artist that is currently sitting in super stardom came out when physical copies would actually sell. Those days are done.

Everything that comes after making the music is just the icing that’s on top of the cake. Real artist don’t care about money and fame. Real artist mostly care about the journey. @@djyua9157 4 times the money...from brand deals and endorsements. You can't make money from what you don't sell love. If records ain't selling then what exactly are you pocketing? Streaming figures equate to pennies on the dollar for even the biggest artists. Money can still be made, but its not "music" money unless its for shows; however, you have to sell those tickets first. I don't have to tell you this because you already watched the video in its entirety...right? The video is *literally* about this subject-specific to this. Also, rap music is the context. The same can apply for other genres, but those other genres have a bigger demographic and thus, more potential for profit (reggaeton, pop).

Someone recently tried to make me feel bad about not liking new rap. I explained to him that it doesn't always have to be for everyone. I would much rather listen to Boompap beats all day than any of the new artists. And that's okay.

So the corporations who own the creators ultimately have control over what happens to the creations. Not the creators or the customers. Just a third party who is really there mainly to benefit for THEMSELVES. I’m not here saying let’s all become russian communists from the 80s… I’m just saying the system of capitalism was made to not work, especially for self-aware populations.

i know artist on the blockchain making 100s of thousands sometimes millions with no label middleman and no one even knows this is happening. most of the music sucks and thats because mainstream artist dont know about it
How bout the best system is no system, musicians can steam their content online directly to the public or their audience. And if they connect just sell merchandise or albums on Amazon or at their concert venues.
If you're a broke artist, that got popular from looking, acting, and talking rich, you're doing yourself bad. Because when you get that deal, and start making money, your whole image and fame is based on you getting money, so it's going to cost money to keep that fame. In turn, if you're fame comes from your talent, not your image, like Vince for example, you won't have to spend a million off top to satisfy your fans. A lot of these rappers aren't popular because they're talented, they're popular because of their image. For example, nobody back in the day cared if rappers like Nas for example, had a million dollars on their neck. I'm not sure if this makes sense, but I've just noticed that image comes before talent, when it comes to a lot of these new rappers. If they didn't have the PJ's, Iced Cubans, Maybachs, Lambo's, AP's, etc... They wouldn't be that popular in the first place. The fans don't realize that it's a smoke and mirror show on IG. They believe that these dudes really have what they show online. They don't realize that a lot of these rappers are posting rentals, fake jewelry, bootlegs, and Hollywood prop money. They don't realize that the rapper who's rapping about flipping bricks, being rich, and making Tony Montana money, is actually a bum, living with their mom/grandma, and barely being able to afford a cut of weed.

Everybody is complaining about the payout. This moment in music is kinda scary because It feels like something is about to happen. Either somebody is about to create another option and all the artist are about to leave the low paying streaming platforms, or a lot of undiscovered people are gonna throw their hands up and say “What’s the point of trying if their gonna cheat us?” Something is about to happen!

You're giving humans too much credit. A lot of people aren't creative enough to cheat a system that they were brought up in. Nor are they creative enough to create another viable option. A lot of people are going to throw their arms in the air and give up and this system will continue and collapse until the final nail is in the coffin. As soon as Drake, Nicki or Taylor Swift stop making music, it's over.
Music isn’t over lol. No one is making good albums that’s it. Rap is the only genre that ppl even listen to albums. The other genres are single based. U might think Afrobeats or other genres are on the rise but really it’s just the singles no one listens to any other genres’ “albums” and that’s how it has always been.
The artist that make good albums Steve Lacy, Tyler, Brent etc. the fans still await their drops. If the albums were good by the top rappers then we wouldn’t be saying this.

I agree with most of that except there are definitely other genres where fans listen to whole albums, I used to think that too until I got out of hip hop and actually got signed with a band and got to look at the industry from that standpoint, people listen to LPs, just not the ones with more than 10-12 tracks
It's true, at this point if artists get taken advantage of it's because they choose not to listen. To many artists have told us and showed us something different. I think a lot of artists just want that immediate fame and that's the sad part. But at what point do artists say no I'm not going to do this.

12:34 thats a great point. Never thought about it like this. The record labels and owners and execs and shadow investors look at the music industry like this: somebody's going to make this music. WHO makes the music doesnt really matter. If we continue to push this low skillset low investment brand of music that literally anybody can make, all we have to do is find the right personalities with the right image at the right time get their audience up and milk a couple hits/streams/viral moments out of them and move on to the next once the crowd's attention span wanes and find another tool aka artist.

Bottom line is really all the Contemporary Commercial Music industry cares about. Artists are nothing but products to the record labels (“industry”). And the “products” are being showcased in a way that psychologically persuades the customer to think that they NEED what the company is offering. In the case of hip hop, that thing that the consumer is being persuaded into believing that they NEED is the lifestyle that the industry uses its “products”(the artists) to promote.
Just like how the fast food industry use wax coatings other synthetic materials to make their “food” more appealing on commercials in order to make it more appealing to the consumer. The music industry (particularly pop/hip hop) does the same thing.
Hip hip/pop industry is just fast food now. Sadly. And just like we long for the days of home cooked meals and healthy food with sustenance, we feeling the same way about home grown artists with sustenance. The cheaper the industry can make their products, the less overhead they’ll have, and the more profit they’ll make.
So just like the fast food industry, as long as we keep consuming it the way they give it to us, the more they gonna keep giving it to us that way. Hip hop/pop ain’t no different

All entertainment industries (Music, Film/TV, Gaming etc) are at the mercy of Tech companies. The Recording Industry is not in control, tech companies dictate how we actually consume the media...I'm sure if it were up to the Recording Industry we'd still be using Compact Disc.
I like Vince more and more every time he opens his mouth. Vince has a unique talent that so many people need to peep game. He is one of very few people in this world that knows how to take the big ugly truth and make it palatable. If more people could learn this talent they could approach dialog with less fear of "social media mob".

This have been discussed years ago. From an industry perspective, the overall bottom line is all that matter. There is money to be made in hip-hop/rap. However, there is more money overall in pop, rock, and country music. People forget, the industry only care about the overall bottom line.

That’s why I’m not exactly disappointed in what’s happening because like he said at the end “bringing hip hop back to the block” making it more creative.

With AI being introduced on many levels of music, Vince has a very valid point. They are turning music into a commodity, & not respecting it as the art that it is. And flooding the market with bullshit makes it harder for real artists to cut through, & the fans accept microwave emcees instead of homemade emcees, because they just want to "eat" quickly. I remember the anticipation of waiting for your favorite artist or group to drop their next album. You don't have that anymore.

Not necessary with AI it gives the opportunity to average people to showcase some of their talent faster. AI can be useful to many artists you still have to know how to use the software and know music itself. Sure a lot of fans dont really understand music. When the beat comes from the Soul Trust me, The fan can feel it.
The music industry will continue to milk these rappers till they wake up. The problem is some of these rappers making 6figures and more a year should never sign and keep building and invest their money etc... If you are an artist making 500 000- 1 million a year or even making a song that blows up and makes you 10-30 million They should never sign unless its a partnership.

I've told people, especially in Chicago time and time again. One of the worst occupations you can choose in life is a rapper. It's legit the hardest job around and a great way to acquire debt to flex a non reality.

Bro. I knew it was over when they started playing the song in the background on a LIVE performance. That's crazy. No other genre of performance does that. But rappers really don't care about their fans. It's all about ego so of course it can't last like that. Many rappers are entertainers but not performing "artist" huge difference
I'd have to disagree a bit. I think the industry is transforming. The same things that are happening now with recorded music also happened in the past when radio became popular. The record industry suffered for a couple of decades before it found a way to remonetize music. However, the record industry only got bigger after that. TV didn't replace radio when it was invented. Podcasts are the new wave, but it won't replace what came before. There are simply more options. However, great material will always find its way to the consumer. Artists need to make buying music an experience again. Also, they need to step up their live performance skills. Additionally, streaming is predicted to make the industry more profitable. As global music consumption increases, streaming companies will make more and have to pay out more to record labels. Artist are going to have to leverage their brands to get through this transitional time and renegotiate their contracts better going forward. Also, artists need to take advantage of streaming. OF and other DTC media sites are the new profit model. We need to stop thinking of music in terms of "sales" and more in terms of overall user experience. Music is intangible anyway. The fact that people try to limit music to something "fixed" shows a lack of creativity and even commercial awareness on the industry's part. All in all, the industry ain't going nowhere. Just gotta adapt.

Hip hop had a problem from inception. Its well documented that grand master caz declined being recorded becasue he didnt see how you could take the concept of what they did and make records out of it. So if the creators didnt see how to monetize it in this way, the ones that did from then on determined the value. It really uasnt changed since then. Yes things change and more ways to extract value were crested, the fact remains that it wasnt the artists themselves that saw the value for what it was. I'm sure this is treu with any commodity. Hip hop is a culture thats a complete whole lifestyle, that is lived , seen, felt , heard and those aspects can't be recoded. .
Curtis you right hiphop def comin back to the block and it needs to happen that way but in a positive way, lyrically and sonically. But the question comes up how will we get supported artistically and financially consistently. That new system folks are talking about somewhat hasn’t been figured out yet. Folks mentioned the entertainment industry may be still moving but it’s going to come to a defunct if most creators just DIY straight out. Some one else said that even wouldn’t be a good idea. I personally feel like the streaming platforms are doing to much. Inflation is doing us the people a disservice so what direction will we head in who knows. I feel like some things should be tried. Like Curtiss said there are folks filming themselves making music from the house or doing some kind of street performance. Hip-Hop as a whole wasn’t meant to go corporate but greedy people made it happen that way anyway. We should take music back to its roots but remodel the system our own way. Either way all the up coming creatives should continue to avoid the industry. Like Curtiss said, how many more documents need to be made to explain the big machine running everything will only continue to put everyone else at a disadvantage.

Facts over feelings
Nothing truly dies its just evolves into something else recognizable or unrecognizable.
I do believe that the music industry is dying very very slow to the point that it now has to be connected to a respirator. Now the challenge is to find out what type of respirator that's going to effectively bring it back to life and sustain it. There is so much to be said about the music industry as a whole from consumers, the creators of music, and the vehicle for how it is collected, distributed and consumed. Now what that looks like at this point is not yet clear, it's still blurry. However, I do believe that we have enough information to put in focus that will help us all involved to calculate and recalibrate so we can better benefit from it now and in the future.
Thank you brother Curtiss for dropping this knowledge on us through these reaction videos. I find them to be most valuable. I also like what you said about this is now bringing hip hop home. Not only hip hop music but forms of creative expressions that has music attached to it. Now again for us the challenge is for lack of a better word, once we get this information when and how we apply it will break or make this music industry's system in it's current situation. In others words, the music industry needs to be reformatted. 😎

🔥 Curtiss you surprised me with your honesty on this topic; the online producer community is incentivized to tell us that the industry isn’t dying because their channels are based on selling shovels so to speak. I think with the rise of AI anything that promotes personality or personal connection will be the pivot for the entertainment industry, which is why podcasts and twitch streaming have become so popular.

The reality is music as a singular focus is not the future, music is too cheap and there is too much talent, what future artists and musicians and singers should focus on is being an influencer who can sell the music rather than solely being an artist in my opinion, labels have no more incentives to build artists and with ai music will go from cheap to free to make. This era of music is over but a new era is beginning

I feel like it’s deeper. We as a society are now aware and mindful. We no longer have the Wizard of Oz affect of knowing who’s behind the green curtain. We know. I think the industry is dying because we are more aware of the truth. Should anyone stop doing what they love? No! Do whatever it is for yourself. Is there money in it? Not independently it’s a lot harder to make that money. I know cause me and my man put out music ourselves. But one thing out of all of what was said I do not agree with is not giving back to fans. Yes there are many who don’t pay. Yet tons that do to watch you in person. Anyone who is doing music for the money is in the wrong business. Sad to say. In fact any art form, if you’re tryna make money it won’t be easy. It’s a plus! Hence the “starving artist” saying. But what’s killing most of the rap industry is the ‘flash in the pan’ musical artist. We have to get back to the basics. And if the music industry loses to independent artist industry, cause of their horrible practices, then that’s on them. We as independent artists need to take advantage of the moment. Whether we win a Grammy or not. It’s a lot easier to get your music heard now then when I grew up in the 90’s as a teen. ❤️

Artists and producers if you want to make money and not worry about this leave spotify and all the streaming services alone and pick up an instrument and go do a show and have your cousin or mom stand at the door and collect your money. They are buying up all your masters and kicking you out of your own game and replacing it with AI . I'm the only one who really sees this. This is just Vince's persona at this point. I saw him at a festival in Arizona and the whole time he was acting like he didn't want to be there. I recently listened to the full podcast where Vince was talking to Joe and Vince was complaining about his Netflix show, and I never once heard Vince express any gratitude that he had his own Netflix show based around his life. There’s people that would do anything for that opportunity.
Music will never die
Vince Staples understands, from his personal experience, contiuing to go in the direction of music is not as profitable to him as other options. Can music artists do patreons like content creators do, do they sell their music via band camp or merchandise through their own website? Music labels and streaming services seem to be the biggest profit holder being the middle man of the music artist and the music consumer.
He's making an awesome point, music should never been free to begin with. Streaming pay rates should be substantially greater than what artists are recieving.
