In the dystopian world of George Orwell’s 1984, there is a machine called a “versificator.” The versificator makes what might be called “fake” music-songs that are “composed without any human intervention whatever.” In April of 2016, “A New Rembrandt” was revealed (1). The painting, like the songs of a versificator, was made by machines. In August of 2016, Music Business Worldwide (2) accused Spotify of “creating fake artists.” What is a fake artist? Can music be fake?
The world of 1984 is a grim place. Members of the “Party” have access to resources based on their rank. The rest of society are called “Proles.” The term is short for the “proletarian” and refers to the working class. The Proles make up the majority of society, and so the Party provides them with various sources of entertainment to keep them from getting too restless.

Allow you to upload your own work to 'transform' it into new ideas and even use your own vocals. Right now it's not that flexible and has flaws that will be fixed as time progresses. But I see it as a more of a gimmick and only really useful for memes, shitposting, backing tracks for commercials, video games, RUclips backing or intros and outros. I’m a musician using these generators for purposes unrelated to my compositions. My compositions will always be my own. But there are good generic uses for this music when an advertising or media production client wants something quickly that’s not from a library. Just not yet. I want to see how the various copyright issues pan out before I stick a client with something that might be a problem.
As for Udio, it has a lot of issues at the moment that mean it’s not ready to take jobs away yet. For example, it doesn’t generate consistent backing tracks for choruses and you’re likely to get something different each time. But it does work really well for short instrumental or vocal tracks a client might need quickly.

@@robotron07 I feel like there's a whole lot of people out there like you trying to scare people like us but it's not working, man. We're not afraid of AI. Not the real artists at least. Like Curtis said, if you making the next guy's sound it's over with. I've used Suno and Udio now and neither of them were able to blend metal and dubstep so that mixing genres and creating new ones isn't coming anytime soon. And I can guarantee that because no one is making the sound to feed to the engine. It can make things similar to what it's fed but it is not able to move past that. It can't understand music culture and therefore references things that have nothing to do with certain cultures AND kept talking about mixing the genres in the lyrics even though I gave it an entirely different topic to write about.
It is NEVER going to take over true artistry. You can forget about that ever being possible. Music is much more than the audio that comes out of it. It is expression of a living experience. AI is not going to shift a culture in any way other than "tech bro," and that will NOT be largely accepted as music I can promise you that.

    • @Grumpyoldgeezer

@robotron07 absolutely. The future of art is in the hands of the artist. AI may be a useful tool but, using AI to produce the same product is a fools errand. To think that the streaming services won't adjust the algorithm to push in house generated AI content and not have to pay an artist is willfully unaware of just how corrupt the system is. The problem lies in the fact that most people are only looking to drown out the background noise while scrolling on their phone. The only advantage for the creator is to go full on human personal experience. Since the birth of American music there has been a revolution or complete re-imaging of the genre. This happens every couple years. That hasn't happened since the early 2000's and the big 4 (pop, hip hop, country and EDM) have become increasingly generic and a death grip on the formula. AI will, and in some cases already have, mastered the genre. Given only a few more iterations, it will be indistinguishable from humans. What AI can't produce is expressing the human condition and the creators truth. The solution is to blow up the genre. Make your tracks almost completely different from what's expected. Look at Ren (HI Ren by Ren is a good primer) doesn't follow the rules and still creates something the hip hop public has embraced. It's that experience that AI can't replace.

      ChatGPT
It seems you're touching on a very complex and nuanced topic within the intersection of AI and music. The debate around AI-generated music often centers on several key points: authenticity, creativity, and the role of musicians in an increasingly automated industry. Music, inherently tied to human emotion and cultural expression, raises unique concerns when it's produced by algorithms.
For professionals who have invested deeply in their musical education and craft, the advent of AI in music creation can be particularly challenging. There’s a tension between the traditional skills they've mastered-like composition, interpretation, and performance-and the capabilities of AI, which can compose and produce music based on vast datasets of existing music. This capability raises questions about originality, the definition of creativity, and what makes music "human."
The core issue you highlighted is the understanding of AI technology itself. A thorough grounding in both music and AI technology can lead to more informed opinions, which are less likely to be swayed purely by emotion. Recognizing that AI can contribute to music in innovative ways doesn't necessarily diminish the value of human musicianship. Instead, it could be seen as another tool in the artist's toolkit, much like new instruments or recording technology in the past.
The analogy with whales singing is quite poignant; it reminds us that the capacity to create and appreciate complex sounds is not exclusively human. In discussing AI-generated music, it's important to explore these broader perspectives and consider how technology might expand the boundaries of what we consider music, rather than constrain or diminish it.
      User
      Can whales sing?
      ChatGPT
Yes, whales can sing! Most famously, humpback whales are known for their complex songs. These songs are composed of sequences of moans, howls, cries, and other vocalizations that they use to communicate. The songs are often beautiful and can be incredibly long, sometimes lasting for hours. Whales might use these songs for a variety of purposes, such as mating rituals, communicating with other whales over great distances, or navigating through the oceans. Other species, like blue whales and fin whales, also produce distinct patterns of sounds, which could be considered their versions of songs.

      ChatGPT
AI-generated music continues to spark debate, full of complexities and unknowns that aren't fully understood yet. At the heart of the issue is the fact that music is a deeply emotional subject, especially for passionate enthusiasts and professional musicians. For those thoroughly trained in music, perhaps at a conservatory, and who also have a solid understanding of AI generative technology, their perspectives are likely grounded in a blend of emotional and factual responses. This balanced view helps them appreciate that just as whales, particularly humpbacks, can create complex and beautiful songs, AI too can produce music.
Music fundamentally involves applying mathematical principles to sound. Notes and chords are analogous to numbers and formulas, adhering to logical, mathematical rules. Humans and even certain animals are intrinsically attuned to this code, which is why music resonates with us from infancy.
Given that computers excel at mathematical tasks, it shouldn't be surprising that they can also create music. The "AlphaGo moment"-referring to the AI that mastered Go, a complex board game previously thought to be beyond the capabilities of AI-illustrates that AI can be genuinely creative, devising strategies and ideas previously unthought of by humans. This landmark event is well-documented in a compelling documentary that showcases AI's potential for creativity.
As AI continues to advance in the realm of music, despite initial skepticism and emotional reactions from the music community, these developments are not unexpected for those who have been closely monitoring AI advancements. There is no need to convince the skeptics; given a few months, the capabilities of AI in music will become both clear and undeniable.

For us producers, AI music can serve as inspiration, sparking ideas for tracks we might want to create or even use as samples to chop up and rework into something uniquely our own. This technology encourages creativity rather than stifles it.
Moreover, selling beats is now a legitimate business for many, and AI tools add to our toolkit rather than replace the craft of beat-making.
It’s all about how creatively we can use these new tools in our workflow!

There are different tiers of composers, producers, singers, musicians and writers. It’s actually ok that everyone can live in their lane. I don’t think AI to this degree is beneficial for the big picture of the music business. So what if some people copy cat? They get weeded out anyway as no one wants it except for music sync. If you ask me, it’s better that a human gets that paper than AI taking the space.
Im all about originality, but we all learned from somewhere, and someone. As a bassist, I studied Sheray Reed and even mimicked his licks until I formed mine. It’s ok. It’s almost like an elite mind set against those that copy cat like we want AI to move in. This goes against the DYIer mindset in my opinion. Some people r at different phases of their creativity.
