A few hundred yards away Rudy saw an adult grizzly. He decided he would pull his rifle out, just in case he needed to defend his and his fellow hunters' lives. Rudy holed himself up behind a tree and could see a juvenile grizzly a little way away from him. By the time he redirected his attention back to the large grizzly bear his entire situation had turned extremely dangerous.
The giant grizzly, described as being a ten-foot mega grizzly had closed in on Rudy. He was by himself, having separated from the father and son who were looking elsewhere for the wounded deer.
The giant grizzly had suddenly reappeared danger close to Rudy. It isn’t clear what brought the bear within such close proximity to the man so quickly. Perhaps his scent had drifted to it on a fickle breeze, but whatever the case, it was now closing in on him with its eyes fixed directly on him.
Rudy raised his rifle to his shoulder and yelled, trying to get the bear to stop its charge. As it closed in on him, he knew he had only one option and he took aim and squeezed the trigger of his hunting rifle. Expecting a loud report and a sturdy kick as the rifle discharged, Rudy was terrified when he only heard the click of the firing pin striking the primer. His hunting rifle had misfired and at the most crucial time of his life.
In the adrenaline-filled moments of a bear attack, victims' brains reportedly process thoughts and information very quickly. Rudy’s first thought was to fall down and play dead but he knew he wouldn’t even be able to dive to the ground before the bear would be on him. In a last-ditch attempt at driving the bear off, Rudy swung his fist with all his might and struck the bear in the nose.
Rudy’s punch bounced off of the grizzlies nose as if it didn’t connect. The bear reached out its jaws and clamped them onto Rudy’s face like some kind of predatory kiss of death. The single bite from the grizzly's jaws shattered Rudy’s lower jaw and with one shake of its head, his entire lower jaw was torn from his face.
    Excerpt #2
Terror filled James as the attack scene from the movie “The Revenant” flashed through his mind. He thought he was dead, no doubt about it. He knew there was no way he could avoid her. She bowled him over and took him to the ground. Her immense size and weight forced the reality of the futility of resistance into James's mind.
James scrambled back to his feet and started yelling at the bear. She returned to him and knocked him down once again. The sow was running back and forth between him and Laura, briefly confused about who posed a greater danger.
James’ brain was thinking very quickly, trying to process how to handle and escape from the danger posed by the enraged sow. He quickly told Laura to jump into the river and he began running toward its banks himself.
Just as James reached the river shore he felt the enormous impact of the sow tackling him from behind. The sow had slammed him down onto the edge of the river and was standing over him with her front paws on the back of his thighs. The only thought racing through James’ mind was that he was a dead man. This sow had knocked him down and sent him flying through the air, crashing onto the rocks three times now in a matter of a few seconds. She was now holding him underwater which would cause him to drown in a matter of a minute or so. This was clearly not a sow looking only to make sure her cubs were safe, but one that wanted to exterminate any threat to them.
    Excerpt #3
As soon as the bear saw the man within just a few yards of itself, its fight or flight reaction took over, and the fight reaction of a bear is always dangerous to a human. If you surprise me, you might just get punched in the nose, but a bear doesn’t have fists, so you can imagine the equivalent reaction. The bear blitzed the man in a blur of brownish fur and roaring teeth. Jack held out his arm as a means to maintain separation between his body and the angry bear. In an attack that lasted only a few seconds, the grizzly clamped its jaws onto Jack's arm and tossed its head back and forth, tearing holes the size of quarters into his forearm and upper arm. The attack consisted of several bites in rapid succession before the bear dashed off into the bush.
I may be dating myself by saying this, but some grizzlies are slightly smaller than a Volkswagon bug from the nineteen sixties, and you may be dating yourself by understanding my meaning.

Eastside, Your forgetting THE most important item one can have in bear country. A chest mounted holster w a backup handgun you can reach INSTANTLY for up close bushwacks. Rudys not that bright. Had an obviously useless rifle that wasnt time tested reliable & NO instant reach backup weapon. He deserved getting mauled. NO pity for stupid. Just because somebody walks into a donut shop it dosent make em a cop. That applies to ALL aspects of life. ESPECIALLY if your a so called woodsman out running around in bear turf. Any REAL woodsmen KNOW you ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS have a backup weapon within instant reach. He didnt. Everyone in Montana KNOWS their bears are especially aggressive. Id bet every donut on the planet he carries a backup NOW. I wouldn't let this guy " guide" me if he were the ONLY " guide " on the planet. Any fool can buy a guides license & pretend to be a guide. But then, ive spent over 37 years in bear central Alaska remote bush, worked 25 years with the AK. F&G dept & been attacked 5 times. All thoes bears are DEAD & im unscathed. It was my backup weapon that saved my ass in 3 of thoes attacks. Rifles dont always stop an enraged attacking bear but a bullet in the brain will stop anything. If its close enough to hurt you its close enough to shoot in the FACE where its brain is at. God gave us a brain, were SUPPOSED to use it.

It's weird to me. We go into the territory, we know is know as Bear Country, yet are surprised when we get attacked. It's like going into a Lions cage and not expecting it to not attack. I don't agree with killing the bear after the fact. The best way to avoid being mauled/killed by a bear is not to go into their territory. Kind of like, best way to avoid pregnancy is abstinence.

Add, only a moron goes bush w/o a backup handgun, preferably in a chest mounted holster for instant access even if jumped. If a bears close enough to hurt you its close enough to shoot in the FACE where its tiny brain is at. Any fool can buy a guides license but using ones brain isnt necessary to become a so called " guide". Todays modern ammos do NOT misfire except for 1 in 10 million & a battle tested rifle if properly cared for dosent misfire either. Stupid hurts & complacency kills & this guy had it coming on both counts. Its one of Gods miracles he survived at all.

I'm so sick and tired of hearing about rifles and bear spray that don't work. Suggestions:
    1. A single-shot rifle is pretty worthless. You need a semi-auto with a full cartridge of a dozen or more rounds.
    2. You need to be able to dispense bear spray within *two seconds* at all times.

As I commented before my ideal weapon would be Thompson machine gun from the 1920s that shot 45 caliber bullets, 600 to 900 rounds per minute, that simultaneously shot bullets, bear spray, and was also a flamethrower. If it was a choice between saving myself and possibly starting the forest fire, I would start a forest fire, not purposely, but it happened by accident while I was saving myself no big deal.

Breaking this down in sections. The first grizzly attack that has to be the worst feeling in the world when your gun doesn't fire either it was from not cleaning his weapon regularly and properly for a bad bullet. Any timer to your body you do not feel the pain immediately as it is a function in the brain that doesn't make you feel the pain immediately the pain only happens once it starts throbbing. Put a bite that severe taking his whole jaw off the pain would be immense and enough pain to cause him to go into shock as this is what the brain does so you don't feel the pain. How he was able to stay conscience throughout the whole ordeal is incredible and very rare as the brain automatically tells the system to shut down and go into shock. I am very surprised of the areas that were bitten that he did not lose all of his blood and was able to stay alive to me that was a miracle of God and if you are not a doctor then you don't understand the way the Body Works as he should have been dead that's why I say it is a miracle of God. I blew my hand up with a Blockbuster as I didn't think I lit it and just carried it in my hand loosely. I didn't even know it blew up in my hand until someone told me my hand was bleeding. I've been took a look at it and so that my thumb pointer finger and middle finger were swollen like in a cartoon bloody. I went to my friend's house and rinsed my hand in his father's deep sink and my friend looked at it and passed out. I quickly the Raptor with some girls take and stretchy bandage and didn't think much of it and when my friend came to we just went into town to hang out with friends. After 25 to 30 minutes of the explosion my hand started to throb and hurt. My cousin was there and noticed that my hand was wrapped and he asked me what happened and I told him I blew it up with a Blockbuster and then I unwrapped it show me to him and he couldn't believe the damage it caused as all three of my fingers were three times the size with slits in them as my fingers expanded. I regret the bandages and my cousin what is pissed at me that I did not call 911 and he told me to get into his Corvette and he flew to the hospital that was 15 minutes away and he made it there in about 7 minutes. They saw me immediately and cleaned up all the blood but the only thing they could do is put burn cream on it called sulfadiazine burn cream and pain medication. It took 6 months for the swelling to go down to normal and by the grace of God I was able to use all of my fingers properly and had a very small scar on the bottom side of my thumb by the skin is but you can barely see it. My middle finger is absolutely perfect but my pointer finger so you have to look closely half of the nail gross just a little bit lopsided but if you use a nail file you can smooth it out so there is no Ridge. I am very lucky that I wasn't holding the Blockbuster type I just had it Loosely in my hand. If I were to have just a slight hold of the Blockbuster my total hand would have been blown off. I also had a moose hit me while on my 4 x 4 with tracks on it not Wheels in 3 ft of snow. He still came after me after that and launched his rack right into my chest and thank God only a piece of the rack hit the side of my rib and if I warrant and ex-navy seal didn't think quickly and get to my knife on the side of my body and move under the most and sliced its jugular I definitely would have been dead. He hit me when I was going about 30mph and boy was it a hit as my 4 * 4 5 ft. Luckily I always carry a medical kit in every vehicle final fast it is a lifesaver so I took off my coat and my shirt clean my room and bandage head up and called the police and animal control so they could take care of this poor moose. I am a biophile and have been a National Security forest ranger in Utah for the past 7 years. If you like the Wilderness and you have the experience and a bachelor's degree your starting salary will be around 107,000 a year Plus bonuses that will to 175,000 a year.

what if you held up a big mirror to a bear that was targeting you? Do you think that would deter it?

@@scarybearattacks lol yes, I do recall seeing that. However, in that video, I feel like the bear was more surprised because he walked up to the mirror and it was right in its face. I was curious if you saw the bear from say 30 yards 50 yards away and held it up, would it still charge?

I've seen the end results of getting your jaw ripped off. That case was a 13 yr old riding an ATV thru a pasture in the boonies of SW SoDak. He did not see the strand of barbed wire about face level. No idea how fast he and his buddy were traveling but fast enough to turn the barb wire into a band saw. The boy should've died from the amount of time of the accident to EMS notified to a Trauma 1 helicopter flying 250 miles to pickup then fly back. Jaw was retrieved but couldn't be used.
The children's hospital used to bring kids to games so I saw the lad quite a few times after he was "fixed" up. He had no features below the nose as the skin was pulled together to form a small hole so the feeding tube could hang out. It was a freakish sight and one so strange you had to do a double-take to confirm your first look.

@@LuvBorderCollies, Most bear attack stories just piss me off due to sheer stupidity but your/ this story made my gut hurt for the boy. Here in Alaska we have folks decapitated by barbed wire fences while snowmobiling & thats bad enough but OW, OW, OW for that poor boy!! I wonder why they couldnt reuse the jaw thou. Perfect DNA match & after having my leg chopped off in a motorcycle wreck & reattached it seems odd they couldn't reattach the lads jaw Especially with todays surgery sciences. Ive seen a boy who fell through a combines blades and cut into 4 peices all fixed up. Blades missed his head & main torso but he got chopped off just below his hips & across the knees.

Just wondering why when u show a bear with a salmon under their paw eating it the bear seems to have put a lot of force with its teeth to pull the flesh off the salmon. Why is that when they can bite thru backpacks and hunting gear type clothes with such ease! Just curious!

    • @scarybearattacks

It is a great question. I think that the salmon have connective tissue that is pretty tough, but I can't imagine the bear pulling on my own flesh that hard.

@@scarybearattacks Mr Huckleberry is that you!? Jk.....he would be 120 yo at this point. I wanted to say I like the way you don't re-victimize the victim by throwing (digging up) dirt on the victims. Like for example I watched someone cover a young man and woman he suggested the woman was a loose air head and the guy was just there to bang her and there like a horror movie, the sinners die first. Didn't like that at all. These are real people. You don't cross that obvious line and that's a plus IMHO.
