Welcome back to Scary Bear Attacks! Today’s episode takes us to Dunbar Lake about 43 miles north of Sioux Lookout in Ontario Canada. This area was covered in vast ice sheets during the last ice age beginning about 21,000 years ago and ending about 10,000 years ago or so. The glaciers that covered the land then were as thick as 9800 feet with weight that crushed rock into soil as they slowly slid their way across the landscape. This ground rock, known as till, is one of the best soils for retaining water and is one of the primary causes of the ponds and lakes that are scattered across the area.
In the centuries following the most recent ice age, the glaciers slowly retreated leaving the till to act as the foundation for one of the world's largest arboreal forests. Broad and uninterrupted forests including Ash, Birch, Chestnut, Hickory, Oak, and Walnut Trees create a shady canopy that rises over the land. It is part of the Carolina Forest Area which stretches from the Carolinas in the United States into Southern Ontario.
White-tailed Deer and moose haunt the shadows while bobcats, coyotes, wolves, and Black Bears stalk their prey.
In the early morning hours of Saturday, May 19th, 2012, 65-year-old Gordon Shurvell was enjoying his annual fishing trip with his lifelong friend, 63-year-old Danny Alexander. Each year the men had made the trip to Dunbar Lake to fish and catch up on each other's lives. They had been friends for the last 55 years and had enjoyed many adventures together over the decades. Gordon and his wife Mary had been married for 46 years.
Gordon had grown up in Winnipeg and had recently suffered two strokes and suffered from diabetes. He enjoyed hunting and fishing but knew that his health might cause him to stop participating in the coming years. Each year, the two old friends would begin planning the next year's trip as soon as they arrived from the current year's trip.
In the early morning hours, Gordon had decided to start the day with a trip to the outhouse. The potty overlooked the lake and had a magnificent view, which was a peaceful sight to start the day. Gordon settled in to take care of his business and left the potty door open so he could enjoy the scenery.
As Gordon took care of his business in the potty he wadded toilet paper in one of his hands and prepared to finish up. As he glanced up he noticed a bear's head appear at the door of the potty. At first, Gordon thought that the bear would dash off if he just showed it he was a person.
Now Gordon had had his fair share of run-ins with bears. For the most part, the bears had dashed into the brush upon sight of a human, but occasionally they were more curious and lingered for a few moments. Gordon assumed that this bear was curious more than threatening.
As Gordon sat on the potty, the bear repeatedly tried to bite onto his feet, but he continually moved them out of its reach. As the bear continued trying to bite his shoes, Gordon kicked his feet toward the bear's nose, but his movements were limited by the fact that his pants were around his ankles. The bear wasn’t driven off by Gordon’s kicks though, and stretched its neck into the outhouse to bite onto his pants.
Gordon tussled with more vigor with the bear hoping that it was only curious. The bear used its grip on Gordon’s pants to pull itself closer to him while he struggled to defend himself. This is when the sinking feeling of just how dire Gordon’s situation hit him.
As fear gripped Gordon, the bear climbed into the outhouse with him. He grabbed the bear and pushed against it, but the bear locked its jaws onto Gordon’s right shoulder. Feeling the pain of the bear's teeth penetrating deep into his flesh, Gordon screamed out to Danny to get a gun. Then the bear gripped its jaws onto the back of Gordon’s neck at the base of his skull.
The bear clawed and bit Gordon across his back and ripped the flesh of his shoulder as it pulled him from the outhouse. It tugged and jerked him about 15 yards from the entrance to the outhouse and ripped a gash in his lower left abdomen. As the bear dragged him, Gordon tried grabbing passing trees and bushes but the bear was too strong and overwhelmed his grip. Now certain that the bear was going to kill him, Gordon laid flat and pushed his face into the muskeg to protect it from being chewed on by the bear.

In July of 1984, I was cornered by an adult brown bear while sitting in a doorless outhouse on Kodiak Island around 8:00AM - at the O'Malley cabin in the bear preserve on Karluk Lake. The bear stood on it's hind legs looking down at me from a distance of 6-7 feet. I had just finished reading a Sports Afield magazine article about a black bear that killed / fed on someone years earlier in the Rockies, heard a noise and slowly looked up. I first saw his claws hanging below his knees, then locked on his face. In response, he started woofing at me. I was weaponless and resorted to hitting him in the face with a roll of Charmin. Then, took off up a hill running toward our cabin - as fast as I could cover 35 yards while pulling my pants and underwear up from my ankles. I still remember repeatingly yelling "eff me" all the way. I burst through the door waking up my two fishing companions (Charlie & Frank) screaming "effing bear" and went for my rifle. I rapidly spun around while cycling the bolt on my Winchester model 70 as Charlie was yelling at me to close the door. Fortunately, the brownie didn't pursue me or I wouldn't have made it. From the kitchen window, we watched him cross over a knoll several hundred yards away heading north. I'm certain that the grass grew a lot greener between the outhouse and cabin over the coming weeks. I'm also convinced that the bear's account of what happened that morning was more humorous than mine. Ever since, the sight of an outhouse has a constipating effect on me.

@@relicdad88 I did. That roll was the only thing in reach. One correction, it was July of 1984 not 2004 and I was in my 20's at the time. I've got a photo of the outhouse with the mashed down grass where the bear was standing. I was scared to death. Not enough to keep me from going back and I ended up guiding folks up there, on and off, for the next 38 years.

    • @j.michaelepstein8958

@@relicdad88I've been charged by three bears at close range - the last charge took place in 2021. In all my years, I never had to fire a shot. About a decade back, my partner (Walt) and I guided some fly-fisherman on a river float trip. We floated past a dozen or so bears feeding on salmon before paddling out about 3/8 mile into a saltwater bay and beaching the raft on the portside shore - to accommodate a floatplane pickup. While Walt and I were occupied with deflating the raft, one of our clients opened a package of smoked salmon. It didn't take long for a brownie to pick up the scent and come our way. We were trapped between the water and a steep cliff. The bear held its head high with its tongue circling its nose at 35-40 feet distant. Walt scored two blasts of pepper spray into that boar's face. After each hit, it turned broadside to us and then stated slowly advancing again -forcing me to keep a ten-pound rifle shouldered for 20 minutes or so. Our pilot was close and I caught him on my VHF. He drove the bear off by strafing the beach with his Beaver. Ever since, I've been no fan of pepper spray. In fact, I've seen bears lapping discharged pepper spray off the ground.

Incorrect. Canadians do own Handguns and Semi-automatic firearms, albeit under very stringent laws.
Generally Canadians may not carry or posses a Handgun in the wilderness unless they have the almost impossible to get an "Authorization To Carry",(ATC).
It is generally possible in Canada to posses and carry outside of National and Provincial Parks certain types of Shotguns and Rifles.

A capable Handgun loaded with Flat Nose Bullets made of Hard Cast Lead or solid Copper is proven in close proximity reactionary Bear Attacks to be the most effective Personal Defense Safety Device there is.
Knifes,Hatchets, and Bear Spray are good as secondary Personal Safety Defensive Devices.
However, a Handgun is the best.
In most situations, it's virtually legally impossible to bring and carry a Handgun in to Socialist Canada. Don't even try to do so, just don't go there. The Canadian Border Officers like to make examples out of Americans. It's best to be safe and avoid going there.
I plan never to ever again set foot in the punitive, hostile, Anti American Socialist Canadian Police State!

Factually it is a capable Handgun loaded with Hard Cast Lead or solid Copper Flat Nose Bullets that is the most effective Personal Defense Safety Device, for in close proximity reactionary Bear Attack situations.
Having a Hatchet and Knife is more effective than Bear Spray. Bear Spray has been proven in multiple cases to be largely ineffective against determined aggressive attacking Black and Brown Bears.

Nothing surprises me any more. Evil people run the world. So a deterrant is really a attractor. What population lives in rural space?
My experience with bears (Northern New England) is that they really don't want you, they just want your food. However, since following your channel, I see that a fire arm seems way better than bear spray.
Regarding an outhouse attack, I don't see it as predatory. It's more like the bear was prowling a human camp, and bear was surprised to suddenly encounter a human.
I recently stayed at a friends off grid camp. It had a "outhouse without a house". Basically a small / deep hole, probably dug with post hole diggers, surrounded by stones, with a seat on top. Should you be fully enclosed, with door shut, or visible, with no "house" on the outhouse? Either way, a gun or weapon nearby.

This answers the age old question: "Does a bear poo in the woods?" The answer is no. The bear was mad that Gordon was using the outhouse when the bear wanted to do his own business, and that's when $#!t got real.

I like your idea Addicus, to bring a gun & bear spray when nature calls. I carry 24/7 everywhere I go from taking out the trash to retrieving the mail. “One of the most frightening things is a man with a gun, and one of the most helpless things is a man without one.”

Why did Gordon have to get rabies shots if the bear was tested and found healthy?

    • @Ret17
      @Ret17 4 месяца назад +1

Rabies prophylaxis is best administered sooner rather than later and it may have been uncertain how long it might take to get the results of the rabies testing; additionally he was bitten around the head and neck which is a greater risk for a virus that attacks the central nervous system.

Yes. The bear would’ve killed him then eaten parts of him. The bear did it because it was looking for a meal. Beautiful, massive bears in the footage. ❤

I think he would have been killed if not for his friend. As to the bears motivation; we don’t know enough about the bear to say. It could have been thinking this human was easy prey for dinner, he may have something preventing him from hunting his usual prey (illness/injury) or may be he WAS rabid. I know I’d be taken a gun to the outhouse with me and putting a latch on the door.

City woman here (But, loves the country 😊) Why do you need to squat in an outhouse?
Just poo in the lake and shake it out 🤣 Personally, I dont think that this has to be a predatory bear. To me, it is just the perfect storm. A hungry bear, a smelly outhouse, and a piece of human flesh that is easy for the pickings. I am glad that he survived this ordeal, at the time 😉
