Welcome back to Scary Bear Attacks! Today’s episode takes us to the Pogo Gold mine about 340 miles northeast of Anchorage, Alaska. The gold mine opened in 1989 and sits in steep and brushy country about 40 miles northwest of the town of Delta Junction. This area has been the site of environmental research ever since mining started and the GoodPaster River Drainage is one of the locations scrutinized and monitored. The elevation of the drainage varies around 2400 feet above sea level with rolling mountains to the south and larger ones to the north. The dense brush covering the land is comprised mostly of alder, willow and other brush under ten feet in height, with occasional stands of spruce and birch trees. The animals common here are moose, and caribou primarily with predators being coyotes, wolves, black bears and brown bears.
At 10:30 AM on Monday, June 19th, 2017, 27 year old Erin Johnson and 38 year old Ellen Trainor were taking soil samples along Goodpaster River. Ellen hailed from Fairbanks and worked as a biologist for Alaska Biological Research Inc., which was contracted to do biological impact studies by the mine owners.
Erin worked there in the same role and grew up in Chugiak near Anchorage. She spent her youth wandering the nearby forests and playing sports. Erin’s interest for sports and the outdoors probably started with her family owning a chain of outfitting stores called Jax Outdoor Gear in northern Colorado. She was a member of the U.S. Junior Olympic Nordic Ski Team in 2006 and 2007. Erin was trained as a geologist and botanist at the University of Montana and the University of Alaska Anchorage. She had already adventured her way around some of the most secluded corners of the globe by this early age. Erin and her husband Gabe were married just two weeks prior to this day.
At their role of biologists for ABR both women had completed numerous classes on bear safety. Their broad and extensive experience outdoors only added to their knowledge base.
Erin and Ellen had packed into their site about 5 miles from the mine, for soil samples and still had the backpacks on their shoulders. As they pushed their way through the thick brush they chatted about being bear aware. Erin was about 5 yards up the trail when Ellen heard a rustling in the bushes just behind her.
Ellen turned to find the source of the rustling and watched a 300 pound bear appear only 15 feet away from her. The bear looked like it could be a grizzly bear but before she could analyze it, it was already rushing toward her. Ellen reached down toward her bear spray in its holster on the waist strap of her backpack. Before she could touch the can of spray the bear closed the distance and drove Ellen into the dirt facefirst. The bear started to tear at her backpack with savage and irresistible force, jerking her around with each toss of its head.
Erin watched as the bear straddled Ellen during the attack. She began to yell at the bear in an attempt to drive it off, but it didn’t relent. After only a few seconds, the bear lifted its head from Ellen and fixed its gaze on Erin. Her screams had finally drawn its full attention and now it approached her.
Now, we have already mentioned how Erin had had training on how to handle a run in with a bear. Undoubtedly she had been taught to do the same thing that Ellen had done. While the bear attacked Ellen she may have had time to reach her bear spray and pull it from the shoulder strap of her backpack. But, she did none of these things, and the reason why can only be attributed to overwhelming fear.
I have been there myself many times in Idaho and Alaska. When a bears eye fix on you, all the plans you have to protect yourself in your rational mind go out the window. The unpredictable nature of a bear becomes a reality and you realize you have no way of anticipating precisely what it will do next.
Ellen’s face was buried in her hands as she stared at the ground, she could hear Erin’s screams turn into gurgling as the bear mauled her. She reached her hand down to her bear spray and pulled the canister from its holster.
Ellen flicked off the safety cap from her bear spray and discharged a cloud of irritant in the bear's direction. The bear immediately charged back toward her and tore at her backpack with continued fury and showed no effects to the spray.

adrenaline surge during a brown bear encounter would cause most people to freeze up with fear. animals can sense fear it flood's out of our sweat pours. that's also another thing that increases the severity of dog attacks also. you gotta be confident even if faking it

I immediately thought of the Mike Tyson comment as well and having lived in Idaho all my life I carry a Ruger super Blackhawk44 mag I use 310 Grain semi wadcutters I've always carried this gun I've never had to use it on a bear but when you frequent grizzly bear recovery area every year during the summer then you would want to have one of these . I keep saying I'm going to get some bear spray but I just don't believe that well

I am retired from a law enforcement agency here. I had 16 years on the job. At my academy we had classes in pepper spray which included being pepper sprayed while applying and removing restraints. I was able to accomplish my tasks while fighting through the discomfort of being sprayed while the room was fogged too.
The pepper spray used on my class was the same bear spray I have carried with me for years on mountain trails.
On my job there had been several times I had been in situations where pepper spray was deployed and far too often the subjects fought through it.
If we,fragile humans, can fight through the effects of pepper spray, I would not bet my life on it with a bear. So I carry pepper spray and a gun, and I still don't consider that fool proof.
So, this is my long winded way of saying, gather knowledge. Videos like this channel can offer valuable information.

I have seen a huge bear in Idaho sitting in broad day light at 2 PM, you know, when they are supposed to be sleeping, etc. He was sitting on his haunches like a dog and I thought he was a black angus cow he was so big. Then I remembered I was in National Forest Land and not open range.

Most predators like to attack Solo prey. Brown bears are notorious for this. So if people want to travel in bear country Trek with 3-4 friends and you can Trek through bear country safely. just don't Cook tons of food leaving snacks open laying around at your campsite. It's all common sense stuff.

Sad too many people believe bears are like Yogi bear and walk around with food spice as a deterrent to being mauled or killed by a bear. All too often , we hear that these attacks are "rare" but in reality they are not "rare" and anyone entering wild country with large predators has little excuse not to bring the proper weapon.

    • @Corinne-v9c
      @Corinne-v9c 7 месяцев назад +9

Lol...I think your characterization of bear spray as a 'food spice deterrent' is an excellent, superlative description of such. I mean, after all, that is the truth. When you boil it all down, all bear spray is, is a very concentrated amount of a food spice...capsaicin, I believe.

Heavy caliber firearms are the only way that you have a chance of survival against these powerful animals.

Its recoil will be stiffer but I doubt anyone will notice during dire circumstances. There's variations of the 500 which I have both. One has parkerized steel and the barrels are MUCH thicker than blued civilian styles. The standard blued model is a featherweight. The military style is almost as heavy as a Winchester M12 riot gun (all steel) with 7 rounds at your disposal. Brenneke slugs for sure.

While guiding in Alaska, my partner scored two direct hits of bear spray into a brownie's face. The bear turned sideways to us after each blast, then continued to advance in our direction. I've also seen bears lap discharged bear spray off the ground. Based on my experience, I wouldn't bet my life on it and always carry a large-bore weapon while traversing in bear country. Had the girls been armed, the outcome might have been different. So sad!

The 1st black bear predatory attack I heard of was in Canada IIRC Manitoba or Ontario. It was in an Outdoor Life or Field & Stream magazine. The survivors said the bear appeared behind them on a trail and keep following them, making no noise. Bear had a creepy stare probably deciding who'd be the tastiest. Don't recall how many were killed or rec'd wounds as it was several canoes full of wilderness hikers.
Thing that struck me the most was the bear's deliberate and focused behavior.
Not sure if this is part of the above saga but IIRC some light campers were attacked while sleeping. This is no joke and it comes from African hunters going after man killing lions. Human flesh is tender and the skin super easy to rip. Plus human meat is a bit sweeter than animal species. If Jeffery Dahmer was still around I could ask him if that's true.

Addicus@@scarybearattacks - Thanks as always for the best retelling of bear attacks on RUclips.
I have seen many statements where people say bear spray is better then a fire arm, and then proceeds to give reasons. And frankly, these "reasons" strike me as being more like some sort of politically correct crusade to speak only negatively of fire arms and to minimize their vaule in self protection. That is just my observation.
But the big take-away you noted seems counter-intuitive based on my reading of many of your tales and those of others, because initiating the spray at distance would seem to allow for more DRIFT and for more breezes to blow it in various and possibly wrong directings totally, diluting and dispersing the elffect whould would seem to be better when CONCENTRATED and in close range.

Had a weapon be used at ground level at the distance the girls were from the bear , it would be alot more effective . Discharging a .338 magnum rifle from a Copter attempting to be as still as possible { other veterans out there know how it feels } is effective as it can be , but , to use the force of a big caliber handgun at 15 to 20 feet { I think you said 15 feet ? } would be my choice . I'm not demeaning the power of that .338 from the copter , I'm saying { by experience } that the power of an equally powerful weapon fired at 15 feet produces a muzzle blast & such an impressive knock down ability , that I'd wager it could of changed that horrible outcome .. Bear spray isn’t as easy to use as some people may think and it really requires a direct hit in the face to be effective. It’s common for wind to blow it away or even back towards the person.

well this one busts two myths, 1.bear spray is effective, that bear got juiced twice at close range 2. black bears only attack as a defensive measure

Aside from their unfortunate bear training, which did not apparently recommend firearms, let's recognize these two ladies. They did valiantly and honorably. Neither one of them ran away from the fight or abandoned the other, but sought to protect the other.
So many people are lightly called "heroes" that took no action by putting themselves in harm's way, but these women did.
I call these two ladies heroes.

💡Seems like someone thought that spraying bear spray on a bear's booty while it's attacking someone is effective😵 Too many gullible people allow bear's and other predatory animals to get too close and even attack them before taking action😞 I'll bet that none of that spray made it to that bear's face, because of how she said she folded up each time the bear came at her. Many of us logical thinking people can listen to these stories told by the survivors, and differentiate the facts from the fiction of their story of what most likely happened😂 It's a damn shame when people are timid and don't immediately act when it comes to real danger, especially when they look at the most dangerous animals as being cuddly Disney characters😔 Makes good stories tho👍👍

Yes a firearm always tilts an attack in favor of the bearer of said firearm. However, it must be able to be deployed in an instant. Perhaps the bear spray would have been more effective if it too was deployed earlier. With either weapon, in a surprise attack from behind as this one was, purpose and utility was largely rendered ineffective.

When you're in grizzly country, in the thick bush, you need to have bear spray or a rifle in your hands at all time. Unless it's in your hand it's worthless.

Here in the east, the Adirondacks/NY and New England, everyone says, Black Bears won't bother you. They say things like 'they are just big raccoons'! And there are no records of them harming anyone around here. This may be true. Maybe there is more natural food around here for them to eat, and no Brown Bears around as competitors . But I think a firearm is the way to go, and training /knowing how to use it and being prepared to use it. I would carry Bear spray as well. But a good hand gun in a good caliber, a shot gun, or a rifle at the ready is the way to go. Hopefully you never have to use them. Sad story, RIP Erin!

I know bears move fast but be aware that the original style bear spray holster is made to 'hip-shoot' if need be. Thats why the top isnt a full cup but rather a 1.5" or so strap. The safety can be removed and trigger pressed with bottle still in holster.
    Sad story here.
I had a relatively minor bear contact incident and got lucky.
If you want my advice, coming from thousands of days and nights in the woods between camping and travelling - the only rule about wild animals is there are no rules. Each is an individual charector with personality traits and life problems.
You might think fires, urine, dog fur, bells or other things keep you safe but it varies by animal.

I can answer all your questions with one statement. Never, ever go into bear country without an adequate firearm, the ability, and wherewithal to use it. Large predators are just that...predators. They are the top of the food chain and they know it. Kinda like a terminator....it doesn't feel pity or remorse and absolutely will not stop (until it wants to). They are not suited for cohabitation with humans. Everyone loses in these encounters.

Would Tear Gas work any better? Polystyrene spray insulation foam with an irritant? Blocking it's eyes? Or Something even more Caustic? I mean there are hot peppers that can blister you, can't they make an truly extreme concentration? Or a dart full of disorientating tranquilizer drug? Spraying it with bear spray, only and seeing it ignoring it has GOT to be
    one of the worst moments...

    • @scarybearattacks

I can't see any kind of foam working because you will run into even greater difficulty in getting the foam where it needs to be than you would with bear spray. I imagine it doesn't shoot as far either. Another issue with some things is time. They may not deter a bear fast enough to keep it from killing you. Channeling Troy Hurtubise!

    From research, videos etc.
Black bear attacks are more common and predatory.
My opinion is because of population growth of humans and bears that overlap and each other. extending into each others territories.
Again season, sow with cubs, all play a big part as well as geographic locations.
Northern black bears although omnivores have little to feed on in early spring. Carrion or young critters are high on menu.
But lunch basket to birdfeeder is easy pickings.
Sow with cub(s) is always dangerous.
    That mamma bear thing.
Fall can be dangerous as well as food supplies dry up, especially if you get a not so healthy bear looking to pack on pounds.
You or I are an easy meal compared to Moose, Deer or almost any other critter.😮
Ears pinned and teeth clicking is not where you want to be.

"Bear awareness"? What does that really mean? Many bear victims become acutely "aware" when they are being mauled by a bruin. Being "bear prepared" is a better state to be in, assuming this includes a heavy caliber firearm, loaded and ready, with the person carrying it, prepared to deploy it with lethal effect.

Omg this was a horrible attack & really hard to listen to Atticus telling it. Firstly, my condolences to Erin. Yes, this black bear boar was obviously "resistant" to the bear spray. When I say resistant, I mean that the bear's will to kill Erin was obviously more powerful than it wanting to get away from the bear spray deterrent. I'm sure the bear inhaling those powerful fumes was not pleasant, but the bear was DETERMINED to kill, thus why the bear spray was ineffective.
I truly believe the effectiveness of bear spray is directly proportional to the mindset of the bear it's being used against. If a bear is that determined to make a kill, I don't think any amount of bear spray in the world will make a difference. If a bear is indifferent to an encounter with a person & the bear's "kill instincts" aren't activated, then yes, bear spray will be a better deterrent & will probably work. I really think it all comes down to the mindset of the particular bear. This is why anyone going into the woods should also have some heavy firepower to make the crucial difference in life or death.
