CEO of 961, Lebanon's leading independent media outlet. Johnny's getting slack for oversimplifying an overly complicated history that Lebanon itself doesn't have an official or collective story for - all in a 13-minute video. Credit where credit is due. While the oversimplification may cause some errors, the general idea is there and things are relatively accurate. I'd say Syrian occupation and abuse is very understated and almost nonexistent. Lots are left out but that's because Johnny's focus is on Hezbollah.
My advice would have been to start from the 70s rather than the 40s. Also highlighting how the PLO was a source of pain for the disenfranchised Shias of the South as well as bringing attention to the multi-layered abuse they were dealing with (Palestinian militias, local militias, Israel army, Syrian army, inter-Shia conflict like the 'War of Brothers' between Hezbollah and Amal etc).
Most of the comments below seem to be coming from pro-Hezb supporters hoping you'd do some PR work for Hezbollah. But for a 13-minute video, you got the point across in as accurate a way as possible that the vast majority of Lebanese wouldn't have been able to do.

I don't care who you are; being a CEO doesn't give you any credibility. Johnny spread misinformation and manipulated terminology. A video that needs more than 13 minutes to explain needs more than 13 minutes of content. A complex conflict is not an excuse. A conflict that is complex needs more information and longer videos.
Pro-Hezbollah or pro-watermelon, misinformation is misinformation.
I am no expert, but here are the points to explain why I found this video misleading:
3:57 "Forced" is a strong word because the Lebanese for centuries were cross-religion, cross-sects. Shia presence in Jabal Amel dates back to the 8th century, according to religious figures.
4:58 The fact that they were Sunni had no place in the argument. The Lebanese were upset because of the destruction caused by the militias, and everyone suffered.
5:17 The PLO tried in hopes to make this a state, but they didn't. There's no proof they ruled.
5:28 This map is completely wrong.
5:44 The civil war was not concentrated in South Lebanon. It was [in] Beirut and Mount Lebanon, and it's not the cause of Hezbollah being in power.
6:00 Why would the civil war spill into Syrian territory? How did he reach this conclusion?
6:45 Did they actually withdraw, or did they create the "zone of security"?
6:54 The map is again wrong. There were military operations in administrative Beirut and in all of South Lebanon. Both parts [are] not colored.
7:29 This is not the proper sequence of events. The group went to Iran, not vice versa. Iran had already offered Amal support long before Hezbollah did any operations.
7:53 Really? They should have involved a religious explanation that the loyalty is not specifically to Iran or to the Supreme Leader. This is something called "taqlid," which is a Shia religious requirement to find a reference to answer your religious questions. Many members of Hezbollah chose Khomeini as their proper reference. Many others don't.
8:05 The US, the main military funder of Israel for a decade, leads a peacekeeping mission in a military conflict with Israel? Are allies neutral?
8:26 Marine soldiers who come to a state where they are not welcomed, mainly because they support the state's enemy, are killed. These are not people; they contribute to the threat of sovereignty, and they don't lead to any peace.
9:22 A parallel government? If a senator provides the people that elected him/her with services, does this make him/her a separate entity? Another point: if the government is absent intentionally because of internal conflicts (not enough schools, hospitals, care centers), [and] a group steps in to provide the absent services, this doesn't make them a parallel state, for they didn't rule by power or dictate using a new law; they didn't represent the part of Lebanon as not Lebanese.
9:28 "Areas that it controls"? A better wording is "areas that it has influence..."
9:39 "Defending their Shia heartland"-who in Hezbollah stated this as a motivation? Ignorance...
10:34 "Take more territory"? WTF is that? They are Lebanese and live in Lebanon, and they don't have any territory apart from that.
10:37 This is an extreme oversimplification of the events, ignoring the fact that since the withdrawal, Israel had still kept many Lebanese captives in Israeli prisons.
11:51 ...killing a lot of Lebanese civilians as well, including deliberately attacking journalists reporting on the events.
12:01 They attacked the Iranian embassy. This is, by law, Iranian land; it's not a proxy attack, it's a direct attack.
12:18 This was an attack on all of Lebanon and not [just] Hezbollah. At the time of the event, more than 2,000 Lebanese had been killed, 3,100 houses were destroyed, and 1 million Lebanese were forced out of their houses. Israel wiped out four blocks of buildings with everyone in them (literally, corpses evaporated) in a bloody war crime.
12:20 "Send troops across the border"? Is this what we call invasions now?
12:26 How is any of that going to make Israelis safe? Every house they destroy, every civilian they kill, creates a new child who will not let them sleep 20 years in the future. This deepens the hatred and increases the harm to everyone.
12:28 Why did you decide they are in shambles? Did they stop the responses? Did they get weak?
12:32 Iran's main reason for response is Israel's assassinating Hanieh on Iranian soil in a direct and deliberate breach of Iran's air, land, and sovereignty.
13:10 One foot soldier who for two decades prevented another country's aggression.

As a lebanese christian I’m so disappointed on how this video is misleading first of Syria WAS NEVER an ally for maronite christians it was only backed but one minority christian party “al marada” in fact Syrians destabilized lebanon during the civil war by assassinating the democratically elected president bachir gemayel in 1982 and committing ETHNICAL war crimes their sole goal was to annex lebanon during the civil war . Secondly the civil war ended in 1990 not 1989 during that time the Plo headquarters moved outside the country and were little to non existing why was israel still controlling the border then in 2000s ? Why haven’t you mentioned that israel tried to occupy all the region spreading south to the litani river and launched a ground invasion which led to one of their most humiliating defeats and that specifically strengthened Hezbollah credibility
Aslo lets not forget that during 1978 when hezbollah didn’t exist and israel invaded lebanon they committed mass crime murders
To end up in want to say as a lebanese citizen that i’m not a fan of hezbollah I condemn their actions in syria they participated in the downfall of the country but in time slike these u cannot be one sided and explain the situation in the way you did it’s insulting for the thousands of lebanese innocent children that have been dying recently

As a guy of Lebanese shiah origin who studied Lebanese history I can say that what you said is factual. The thing with the syrians is that they would supply weapons to all side therefore determining who would win or lose so the Christian's like other groups had to keep them as friends.
What led to the syrian assassinating Gemayel ? Was it because they accepted support from Israel? I know he was close to them in the beginning then he became more independent.
Despite the Christian phalanges militia committing a massacre againts the palestinians after gemayel death a lot of Christian who joined leftist groups supported the Palestinian cause.
Israel expulsion of the Palestinians started the Lebanese civil war and other wars in the region because the palestinians hijacked the Lebanese state with many sympathetic to their cause in the beginning but most Christians just wouldnt have it, and later a lot of others also agreed even hezbollah was anti Palestinian when it was created Amal was the shiah pro Palestinian movement.
And despite that small mistake Johny Harris is none biased

But he needs views because he relies on ad revenue to pay his team. And you also need to have somewhat regular uploads for RUclips to recommend your channel. Hey Johnny, great video, but some key points were left out. The 1982 Israeli invasion caused immense destruction across Lebanon, uniting Shia, Sunni, and Christians in opposition to the devastation ( despite, as you mention their civil war among all 3 factions in the 1970’s as you did mention) The siege of Beirut was so severe that President Reagan had to intervene, urging Israel to stop after receiving disturbing images of the bombings. Your Chapter 2 or 3 does not mention the sheer severity of indiscriminate bombing that united and created Hezbollah - ( no mention Israel by name when the video makes this point and opted to say Hezbollah was created to kick out foreigners or foreign intervention ) Also, while you mentioned Syria’s presence, Israel’s occupation specifically lasting “18 years “ of southern Lebanon was crucial in shaping Hezbollah’s role as a resistance movement (Chapter 3, 8:48)
It’s also worth noting that Egypt and Jordan-two of the closest Sunni countries-receive $1.3 billion and $1.5 billion annually from the U.S., alongside Israel’s $3 billion minimum. This financial support may explain why only Shia groups like Hezbollah and the Houthis (Zaydi Shia) are actively supporting Gazan Palestinians, despite their own strategic interests . These dynamics are essential for understanding the broader regional picture and Hezbollah’s role in it.

Franky the worst representation ive seen of the war:
Iran did not strike because of their immense loyalty to the militia, it struck after provocation by Israel leading to assassinations out within iranian territory and making its leaders look like it wouldnt ever defend itself
This is so far from the truth and it doesn't even begin to speak about how the French, like many clonial powers left Lebanon with a destitute political system designed to fail incase they ever had the chance to occupy again

Johnny, I’m beyond disappointed. I used to consider you one of the most trustworthy and unbiased journalists, but this video completely destroyed that belief. You ignored the thousands of Lebanese and Palestinians killed by Israeli occupation, left out key details about the bombings before Hezbollah even existed, and conveniently skipped over Israel’s provocations that led to Iran’s retaliation. Your selective storytelling is shocking, and I can’t support such biased content anymore. I’m unsubscribing from your channel because you ignored the historical facts, if someone argues Jhonny may not know about all these, than unsubscribing because you are too shallow generalist to understand the matter.

Pan Arabic/Muslim supremacy at it's finest. @@cpnete6048 My criticism is not based on religion or identity but on the facts that were omitted or distorted in the video. The suffering of thousands of Lebanese and Palestinians at the hands of Israeli occupation is a historical reality, not an opinion shaped by bias. Israel’s provocations, such as assassinations on Iranian soil and attacks on Lebanon before Hezbollah even existed, are well-documented. Critiquing selective storytelling isn’t about supporting one side-it’s about acknowledging the full scope of the conflict. Peace requires understanding the facts from all perspectives, not just one narrative.

    4:50 - it’s simply wrong.
Palestine was never conquered because it was never established as a state - the Palestinians rejected the UN Partition Plan and started a war against Israel. What actually happened is that Jordan controlled the area, called it the “West Bank,” and then it was taken over by Israel in 1967.

    • @NagaiColor
      @NagaiColor 5 часов назад +21

Plenty of modern nations didn’t start as formal "states" until recently, yet no one questions their legitimacy today.
      For example:
Germany - Not a unified state until 1871.
Italy - Only unified in 1861.
India - Became a modern nation-state in 1947, yet it existed for millennia as a region with various empires.
United States - Before 1776, it was a group of British colonies.
Saudi Arabia - Established in 1932, previously a region under tribal rule.
So claiming that Palestine isn’t "real" because it wasn’t a modern state is historically ignorant-most nations we recognize today didn’t start as states!
RE: the "West Bank" and Jordan; Israel's occupation of the West Bank after 1967 remains illegal under international law. It should not be considered part of Israel proper.
