Hello Johnny. Long time subscriber here. I've written a few comments about the military industrial complex in the past and they systematically get erased. Any idea why?
This is a good video. There are a few points you missed, though. Firstly, lots of the flaws in government procurement come from the relative lack of experience or skill of the government civil servants. This is due to the fact that the best ones will routinely get hired by the private sector for significantly higher salaries. This leaves the government without the technical expertise to properly write technical specifications for contracts. Or the ability to hold the private sector to account.
Johnny, please help the movement. It's time to stop electing the rich and well connected and START electing working class Americans. But we cannot do it alone.

Last time he was called out by Tom Nicholas, Johnny feinted a response of gratitude, but then double down by completely ignoring questions about how he received the false information in the first place. the probable context was that he was likely hired to crate the propaganda peace as opposed to it being his own interest in doing the research in the topic.
I used to work on jets in the Marine Corps. Every time the jets went out flying, they'd come back with several screws missing. It's not uncommon to have to replace 15 screws after every flight. What blew my mind was seeing how much each screw cost the Marine Corps. $55 dollars PER SCREW. $55 for a screw that you could get a whole box of from your local hardware store. THATS why the DoD spends an insane amount of money.
Its because they are "custom" parts made exclusively by contractors, the parts monopoly is actually crazy but with new additive construction methods like 3d printing all we need is material + a CAD model and a machine to print the part which reduces costs so much. Right now to create that part or to make improvements to a mass produced part you have to update a whole production line which lets say is time and money consuming or you just make it individually by hand at a small rate to save costs. If procurement contracts that force the US to buy parts from contractors change the price will likely go down as well.
I work in the defense industry. Primarily im a machinist making critical components for F35's B2's F22's and all sortsa other aircraft. Let me shed some light on the reason that screw costs $55 and why you CANT just get em at walmart. Those screws are precisely machined one at a time by my friends on lathe side, im a 5 axis mill guy but those screws are machined withen sets of tolerance to try to prevent them from flying off. I know those 15 flying off seem like alot but trust me itd be more if you used just random screws with no cares for tolerance. Those tolerances exist to accomadate for the rapid heating and cooling of an aircrafts surface. Albeit therell always be some that fly off thats why each hour of flight requirs X so many hours of maintenance. Running and maintaining a fighter jet fleet is expensive even more so when its the most advanced fighter jet fleet to ever exist. Its something alot of upcoming or 3rd world countries trying to operate fighter jets at least good ones cant seem to get. They dont have the advanced precision machining industry america has to just churn out spare parts that are ALL withen tolerance and can fit on any aircraft no problem that level if interchangibility and quality at that massive level is inconcievably expensive so it makes sense those screws cost that much not to mention the cost of the screw helps keep me in work
This video has good intentions, but doesn't provide context for the spending. One example of this is the Stinger Missile. The reason why we pay so much for it now is that we haven't ordered them for over 20 years, meaning that the factories and workers that made them are usually retired. It takes time for the efficiency to ramp up, and eventually the missile will be a lot cheaper once mass produced. Additionally, they upgraded the Stinger because the old parts were not manufactured anymore, making it more expensive. The crews that operate them train in VR, which means that they don't use the actual missiles to train like suggested.
It dropped and basically shows once again what most people know by now: Johnny Harris only has surface level knowledge of most things and thus produces poorly researched videos that at best are misinformation, at worst outright lies.
@@Benzi514 The issue is that Johnny Harris uses logical fallacies in most of his videos, at this point he is speaking more like a politician or populist than an investigative journalist.
Correction at 10:06. The "world wide web" was not developed by the US military, but at CERN by Tim Berners-Lee, a British scientist. The ARPANET, which is the precursor to the internet was developed by the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the US Department of Defense.
He did say "started in part". TBL's software concepts needed the hardware infrastructure of ARPANET. In fact reverse DNS still uses .in-addr.arpa as the domain.
Funny how the Pentagon is in the thumbnail since they failed 5 audits and can't account for like $4 trillion dollars. That's more money than the amount the military spent since 2020.
No, the problem is not that it's so large. It's that a lot of these organizations that branch off of it are dark. They don't want anybody to know what they're spending the money on, but you can bet it's anti-American. And pro elite corporations, and their elitist.
"Spending" on military is the best way to launder money. Lawmakers get their pocket money, arms manufacturers get their steady profit from tax payers. It's really just business. I hope they can cut the part where they pretend they really care about national security and all of that.
Bro, it's the invisible hand of this system that keeps everything working. If you think that all what works exists because it's honest, I have a rude awakening for you
It infuriates me that anything that has to do with money such as filing a TDY voucher, we as Service Members are under a magnifying glass having to justify every little expense to "prevent fraud, waste, and abuse" while the real fraud, waste, and abuse comes from the contractors.
Those sound a lot like the words of someone else who has had to pay $73 for misplacing an "onyx felt tip permanent marking device" aka, a sharpie that they were issued at some point but failed to turn in before being discharged 😂
That's because corruption on the top can be accounted for. Since the number is so large, they can still see how effective the military actually is with those corruption. For example, if you know 20% of your budget is taken away by greedy defense contractor, you can re adjust your military thinking. However, if the bottom soldiers corrupt, you are very screwed. Pulling away copper from T-72 is hard to track, and the corruption are just insane, losing millions dollars of equipment for thousands of dollars of corruption. That's why the bottom soldier need to do so much accountability. They are the one with power to cripple a military
The propaganda is strong. First off in the us we spend wayyyy more on social security then the military and wayyyyyy more on midecare. We spend 200 billion more on education its just taxed locally so left pocket instead of right. Brah cmon man johnny
You say that like that's not on-par with most highly developed countries. Being #13 in the EU or Asia would be a feat, being 13 in the world is still amazing.
Just a fun fact about the stinger missile and why it is so expensive now compared to 1991. Its because they stopped producing them in 2003 and now when the DoD put up contract so Raytheon had to recall retired workers to show how it was done 20 year earlier and completely redesign the missile, because many of the components are not produced anymore. Edit: Spelling
that.... does not even come close to explaining how it is 16 times the cost... And if it did somehow explain it, then the obvious question is why are we still using these? Somewhere in here is corruption 100%
@@yomommashaus I think why are we still using these, might be best answered with the question, why did we stop. We stopped because the cold war ended around 10 years before, and the current people the US was fighting didn't have aircraft. Stingers are specifically an anti-air weapon, and a waste of money on anything else. The US didn't see a fight with a country that had an air-force on the horizon. We only just put in the order for them as a response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Not to say that the monopoly doesn't add to the price, but in this case it's probably one of the most extreme price increases.
I was an Aviation Logistics Specialist in the US Navy from 2008-2012. I oversaw all the aircraft parts that USMC and Navy squadrons were using on my base. Simple Boxes with a few wires and a switch cost $127,000.00 ... Not to mention $70 screws and nuts. It's absolutely unbelievable the amount of waste these big companies and politicians in their pockets do to destroy our country.
That's the most depressing part of this video. Even I want to become a defense contractor but I wouldn't Overcharge The American government. "Simple Boxes with a few wires and a switch cost $127,000.00" is wild.

What really pisses me off as a combat wounded Airborne veteran, is why some of this graft isn't put into the Veterans Administration? You served your purpose. Why would they spend money on something used and broken when they can spend the same or less on something brand new and ignorant? When the economy gets so bad and the military is the largest employer everyone will be lining up to " serve their country" just so they can eat.
While I was in the military, a few of us were once tasked to take “old furniture” to the military disposal area which was basically 2 HUUUGE domed buildings that had very very nice furniture, electronics, and computers. I was so upset to see how much we were throwing away when that stuff could have been donated to schools or low income homes. So devestating.
Was it actually being thrown out, or was it being surplused? If it's in a usable/sellable state, most likely, it would have been auctioned off via a site like GSA Auctions, for example. I've seen UH-60s auctioned off, so furniture shouldn't be a problem.
" I was so upset to see how much we were throwing away when that stuff could have been donated to schools or low income homes." They're usually auctioned off, or left for the Taliban to use.
I wish the money would go into the pockets of sailors, soldiers, airmen, and Marines. There are so many disabled veterans who can’t get quality healthcare, homeless vets with PTSD, and lower enlisted personnel sleeping in moldy barracks or without AC in 100+ degree temperatures. Some are facing pay problems and haven’t been paid for months. It’s unacceptable.
Actually VA healthcare is really good. It's an outdated myth that VA is a shambles, mostly created by anachronistic scenes in movies whose scriptwriters are ignorant of the facts. Not being paid for months also sounds grossly unrealistic, given the payroll software is connected to the internet nowadays, but pay INCREASES can take 60 days to get through sometimes, it's possible. (I briefly worked in payroll while training as an accountant.) Regarding the rest of it, that's just basic cost-cutting. How are the CEOs of contractor firms like Raytheon and Lockheed Martin gonna make their millions if you start making the staff comfortable? That's crazy talk.
idk where you got your info from, but disabled veterans /that have spoken to the department of the VA/ (Including the homeless vets you also reference) get free healthcare for life as well as a monthly tax-free disability payment that exceeds $4,000. This is also not included in the defense budget, it is its own department with it's own spending. The second thing you listed is indeed an issue, rundown buildings and such. and pay problems are common but you will always get backpay and *usually* if you arent getting paid its your fault.
@@andrewjohnson3940I don’t know, but the veterans I know who are rated 100% definitely aren’t getting over $4,000. The free healthcare is okay at best; when you go to the VA, you often end up misdiagnosed because the doctors are so overloaded that they just want to get you in and out. Many are still in pain, and I wouldn’t necessarily blame the doctors. A lot of sailors, marines, and soldiers are just following orders, but sometimes personal issues, like lost paperwork, prevent them from getting paid. I also haven’t mentioned the problem of overpayments, which can leave people in debt to the government.
@@andrewjohnson3940 from what I've gathered, talking to online friends in America, there are a lot of hurdles to get those benefits. Nearly endless paperwork, which can be impossible for some of them to fill out, especially the ones with PTSD. If all the veterans have done, since leaving high school, is in the military they may be lacking the skills the rest of society has, because everything it provided for them in a very regimented way. The best depiction, I've seen, was in _The Hurt Locker_ when _Jeremy Renner's_ character is back home and goes shopping for his wife. He's shown staring at this massive isle of breakfast cereal and being overwhelmed by the choices. It may have been portrayed in other shows, I don't watch that many, but other than reading books that's the scene which stuck in my mind about it.
You know what's crazy? That $916B is just 3.4% of the US GDP. There are 15 or so countries like Saudi Arabia, UAE, Morocco, Singapore, Armenia, Pakistan and Cambodia that spends more on defense GDP percentage-wise than the US. Just goes to show how large the economy truly is.
The crazy thing is the US government has been able to convinced it's citizens that it's perfectly acceptable to spend this much money on its military/weapons while not having a public health service and having it's own citizens die or go bankrupt when they get sick.
We spend 6% of our money on the military. We spend 60% on Medicare and Social Security and other social programs. So ten times what we spend on the military goes to the demographic that you say isn't getting enough. If you want to look for waste and abuse you need to start there.
I’m going to have to disagree. You’re not accounting for how immensely wealthy the US is. We spend this much, and yet it’s STILL only like one sixth of what we spend on resident social programs. Almost all science research falls under this budget for example look at GPS, what we all use daily. We’ve put more than entire foreign countries GDPs into GPS and its upkeep which keeps planes flying accurately and makes modern life possible. Thats just one example!
I think some Americans like you fail to understand that the U.S. is already one of the wealthiest countries in the world, and that is due to its strong military and diplomatic power. However, from an external perspective, America's military strength is relatively declining, which means its global influence is waning. And if the U.S.'s global influence decreases, it will gradually become poorer. Public healthcare policies, too, ultimately depend on having the money to support them. Before complaining from a narrow perspective, carefully assess the global trends and consider what path will truly benefit the U.S.
US military service is the same as war & fighting anywhere - rich man’s sport, played by the poor. But worse because the scale of destruction of US foreign policy. Such a service should not be ‘thanked’
@@danielkim672 it's a job, a low paying government job with benefits. The vast majority of the people who join the us military do so for selfish reasons. Furthermore, the never-ending barrage of hollywood, military, and political propaganda also causes people to join the US military. They're fed glorious lies about protecting freedom and the constitution when, in reality, their main job is to protect international business interests, plus expanding US hegemony all the while exacerbating the bloated military industrial complex
@@eaw6590 I'd beg to differ on the selfish part a bit. Unless you ever served you don't know what motivates someone to join. Plus the reason to stay can be different than when a person joins.
In the UK we have a concept that Military + Healthcare = X where X is constant. For the first time since WW2 the total of these two is increasing (rather than military decreasing and healthcare increasing)
The UK military is in a catastrophic state at the moment with it's constant budget cuts over the past 20 years, it would quite literally not be able to defend itself if they went to war right now. It's a pretty sever issue
Whenever I watch documentaries about issues in the U.S., there are a few topics that come up again and again: student loans, high medical costs, and homelessness. It makes me wonder-if just a portion of the military budget was allocated to these areas, could things like education and healthcare become more affordable, or even free?
They could absolutely fund and end all those issues you mention and the US would STILL be the top spender in the world on its military budget. This is how ridiculously bloated their spending is.
@@egdapo except you forget that the main reason why everything costs so much is because people get paid to make it, unlike in the countries that consider themselves your opponents. Russia can make way more with a billion dollars than you cuz they don't need to pay as high a wages
Your idea has been long debated. The short answer is simply throwing money at something doesn’t make it better. The long answer is that resources are limited and you have to allocate them depending on your priority: if you want the best teachers you’ll have to pull people who would otherwise be in finance/medicine/law and instead have them be teachers.
Except that us spends a lot more per capita on Healthcare and education than any other country in the world. Only that it's not used to make it free. The problem is never about money
They could fund all of it just by eliminating waste, fraud and over charging by contractors. They wouldn't even have to touch the other parts of the budget
Hey Johnny, a few things seemed off in this video. There’s no U.S. military base in Finland, so those red dots are a bit misleading. Also, NATO countries actually fund their own bases-it’s a common misconception that the U.S. covers those costs for everyone. Its also interesting that Finland’s F-35s, for example, were bought independently at around $74 million each, even before NATO membership. It’s surprising to hear the U.S. might be paying almost double that price; could it be that their cost includes additional support or upgrades beyond just the planes? Also, comparing military equipment prices from 1991 to now doesn’t quite fit, since technology has advanced so much, and costs have risen across the board. As more countries buy these advanced jets, prices go up simply due to demand, and because few companies can match the quality of U.S. military tech. Outside of the missile and airplane industries, we’re also seeing more new companies step into areas like drones, where there’s less of a monopoly. This video felt a bit off-target with some of the info. I would tag this video as fake news or misleading info.

The USA's military budget may seem massive but there are many factors where the US is losing capability due to high costs. US labor is expensive people forget that roughly one-quarter of the Department of Defense's budget is for military personnel, The US over pays for many weapons for example a stinger missile that cost $25,000 in 1991, now costs more than $400,000 a 1600% increase in just 3 decades. The US navy is decommissioning more subs than they are receiving even though they only have 49 nuclear attack subs today when the requirement is 66 (set in 2016) and projected to decline to 43 by 2030, If the US wanted to ramp up the Sub building to 2.5 per year they can't without building new shipyards and that process is underway but it may be too late if a conflict happens with another great power, in short the US needs massive oversight and new competition in the defence industry, Turns out consolidation did not make a stronger defence base only a more expensive one.

THATS why the DoD spends an insane amount of money.
well to be fair... if all the screws are Temu grade the aircraft won't even survive any sortie... or even taking off
Its because they are "custom" parts made exclusively by contractors, the parts monopoly is actually crazy but with new additive construction methods like 3d printing all we need is material + a CAD model and a machine to print the part which reduces costs so much. Right now to create that part or to make improvements to a mass produced part you have to update a whole production line which lets say is time and money consuming or you just make it individually by hand at a small rate to save costs. If procurement contracts that force the US to buy parts from contractors change the price will likely go down as well.
That's almost hospital surcharge prices...
It’s not $89,000?!
They dont have the advanced precision machining industry america has to just churn out spare parts that are ALL withen tolerance and can fit on any aircraft no problem that level if interchangibility and quality at that massive level is inconcievably expensive so it makes sense those screws cost that much not to mention the cost of the screw helps keep me in work
Imagine how much more military we would get for the same amount of money if the defense contractors didn't overcharge.
Imagine not spending this amount of money in the first place and putting it in to the education of Americans

@@ItsMeHammieand healthcare and climate change or even just reducing taxes
This video has good intentions, but doesn't provide context for the spending. One example of this is the Stinger Missile. The reason why we pay so much for it now is that we haven't ordered them for over 20 years, meaning that the factories and workers that made them are usually retired. It takes time for the efficiency to ramp up, and eventually the missile will be a lot cheaper once mass produced. Additionally, they upgraded the Stinger because the old parts were not manufactured anymore, making it more expensive. The crews that operate them train in VR, which means that they don't use the actual missiles to train like suggested.

@@yomommashaus I think why are we still using these, might be best answered with the question, why did we stop.
(I briefly worked in payroll while training as an accountant.)
Regarding the rest of it, that's just basic cost-cutting.

And now you don't have both
Who do you think has been funding your military all this time, though? We defend basically the entire world
@@nullpro7435 from the monsters you create. Thank you. It's called racketter.
The UK should become the 51st state of the US 😹
The UK military is in a catastrophic state at the moment with it's constant budget cuts over the past 20 years, it would quite literally not be able to defend itself if they went to war right now.

The jobs at the defense contractors are extremely hard to get. They get thousands of applications per position and only hire the top 1% engineers who had a 3.8+ GPA and multiple internships in college. They aren't begging for people.
@@DeathsOnTheYAxisI don't think you understand. He's saying people come out of college saying they won't join defense contractors because of morals. Then they do because they pay so much, especially out of college.
Half of our *discretionary* spending goes towards the military, not half of the total budget. Your graphic was correct but the way you said it is very misleading. The total we spend on our military is 13% when taking into account the total budget, not half.
Yeah it's misleading for sure.
Totally agreed, and without explaining how significant different that is, is concerning. I appreciate @JohnnyHarris videos but this oversight made me lose faith in the video overall.
I have seen him doing the same. He’s good but not great.
Making such a glaring mistake 30s into the video into your very first opening points is unacceptable. Harris is good at making videos, not educating people.
not the only misleading thing in this video tbh
I like how Ryans video is longer then the original. Ryan McBeth is the champ
If you take the Blue or Yellow line on the metro, you will notice that the pentagon station only has advertisements for military manufacturers meant for a handful of requisition officers.
It's because the US military is the real US Dollar value. Nuff said.

Eisenhower warned us in 1961 about the defense industrial complex
Actually this is a misconception. The excerpt widely shared is part of a larger speech in which he advocates for a larger military. Pass it around.
Ps. I agree with Harris, there is a serious conflict of interest.
And during Eisenhower's day, we spent 3x as much on defense as a % of GDP. So that's kind of a nail in the coffin of that concept
