Welcome back to Scary Bear Attacks! Today’s episode takes us to the Indian state of Karnataka. This state covers a scientifically important region called the Western Ghats Mountain Range which geologists claim are older than the Himalayas. Karnataka has a forested area of 12.3% of its geographic area totalling 38,720 km2. The Ghats receive an average rainfall of up to 150 inches each year which averages to ½ inch per day. Ample water makes farming in this region easy and mushrooms are a common product to grow.
The Indian government is trying to plan development in this sparsely populated region, but the label of being sparsely populated means something entirely different here than it does to the rest of the world. The population in this state is around 64 million people spread out over an area that also hosts 25% of the wild elephant population in India, as well as 10% of the remaining tigers.
The mountainous region contains peaks that stretch over 5,000 feet in elevation, which isn’t high compared to others, but it has dense jungles hosting Bitangur, Malabar Tamarind, Wild Jack, True Cinnamon, Sandalwood and Malacca Trees. Many of these trees bear edible fruits, yield medicines or are a source of spices derived from their constituents. Animals here include the Asiatic Elephant, Gaur, as well as Sambar, Chital and Muntjac deer species. The predators of this area include tigers, leopards, civets, foxes, jackals and sloth bears. It is in this tropical paradise that our episode takes place.
The name sloth bear is a deceptive moniker because they are not related to sloths and are not slow. They are agile and run about as fast as a human being, but can climb trees very well, likely the source of the sloth portion of their name. Though smaller than most other bear species, when confronted, Sloth bears are known for being fearless and not backing down from any adversary, including tigers. Once a sloth bear sets its mind on pursuing its prey, nothing can redirect its attention.
Around the small city of Haliyal, farmers eek out their subsistence and sell their excess to consumers for income. One such farmer was a grower and seller of mushrooms named Jube Valanti Adveppache. The 58 years old belonged to the Siddi tribe which trace their ancestry back to Bantu tribes in southeast Africa. His people were captured and brought to this area by Arab slave traders and eventually assimilated into the society, many as farmers.
On the evening of August 22nd, 2016 Jube was headed out to pick mushrooms in one of his many fields. He was a fairly successful mushroom farmer and performed much of the labor himself.
As Jube was bent over, pulling his harvest from the ground, he was not focused on his surroundings. Sure, there were many dangerous animals in the area surrounding his farm, but he had never had a threatening situation to this point in his life with one. Reaching toward a small patch of mushrooms, Jube was suddenly driven onto his face and felt enormous pressure on his back. Some kind of animal had blindsided him and was biting onto the back of his head.
Jube screamed and squirmed trying to get the animal to stop attacking him. He was strong enough to push the animal off of him and flip over to see his adversary face to face. As soon as he recognized his attacker as a sloth bear, Jube knew he was in for the fight of his life.
He pushed his hands toward the bear and managed to create some separation between the two. Blood trickled down the back of his head from the bear's initial bite and Jube hoped that would be the extent of this attack.
Staring into Jubes eyes, the sloth bear swatted at him a few times while it seemed to consider how to approach him for a renewed attack. The bear angled toward Jube slowly and tried to get a good approach to get through his hands. At the first opening it leapt onto Jube and pressed him to the ground.
Now facing up, Jube stretched his hands toward the bear’s mouth as it tried to bite his head. He managed to push its snout past his face several times but each time he succeeded the bear would simply try again.
After several attempts to bite Jubes face, the bear changed tactics. As soon as Jubes hands were pushing its snout it would rake his arm and face with its claws, ripping gashes in any part of Jubes body they touched.
After several minutes of wrestling with the bear Jube began to tire. He was afraid he couldn’t keep defending himself from the relentless attack. But, the bear began to tire as well.
Jube deserves a medal of courage at the very least. Poor guy, I'm amazed he lasted so long and was able to walk 3 miles to find help. ❤
This poor man walking three miles after fighting off any bear for 3 hours is amazing!!! He’s was as tough as any man can be! And your channel Addicus is truly one of a kind. Your narration is awesome. THANK YOU!!!!
@@FiftiesForward your probably right it could have been more like 4 hrs ? Who knows but regardless my hats off to the man surviving this attack 👍
I can't imagine fighting anybody for ten minutes let alone a bear for 3 hours
You better start training.
Exhausting. But remember adrenaline.
@@DeepOnes420 have you ever been in a real true fight? After 10 minutes and adrenaline wears off you’ll feel like you can’t hardly walk!!!
What an incredible story of survival.
Attacking from behind makes me think it was nothing Jube did to provoke the bear. I do believe it kept the attack going only until he thought Jube was dead.
he was bent down with his back to the bear. it absolutely is not his fault, they say that is a submissive stance and can invite an attack. he didn't know the bear was watching him and i do not think he could have done anything different, he was picking mushrooms, feeding his family. it's just so sad the bear was watching, the sloth is said to be a very aggressive species of bear. jube is absolutely incredible. sometimes we are not entirely in control of our circumstances. it really sucks but life does that to us sometimes.
Sloth bears are the creepiest looking bear.
They are so scary looking
That's because they look like a human put on a poor replica bear suit lol
they are!! creepy is the right word, plus they're supposed to be very aggresive. i recently saw a documentary about sloth bears and their cubs, so cute! and now i can see past the creepy. the cubs are cute in a funny way.
Greetings from Ghana... OMG!!! What an insane attack!!!!😮😮😮😮😮
WOW! I am very glad to hear you are listening from Ghana! I hope you are safe and take care!
Omg this is so awful,I can't begin to imagine what poor Jude went thru ,such an awful long attack .Thank you Addicus .Have a great night.
This man was tough! I dont understand why folks who go into the wilderness dont at least cary a large knife.
Jube endured a 3 hour attack followed by a 3 mile walk to get help -- I don't think I could have survived that! This was a harrowing attack and I'm glad Jube was able to survive.
Wowza!! Jube was a bad ass to fight off a mean sloth bear for 3 hrs!!! I know I wouldn't have the strength to do that!!! What a nightmare!! Loved this story! Very interesting!! Thanks Addicus ❤ see ya on the next episode 😊
Sloth bears seem to be the most aggressive
I watch so many bear attack videos, I rang my bike bell a few times today even though I am not in bear zones😅 although one is spotted every so often
Wow wow wow!!!!! Astounding indeed!!! My friend said that mean sloth bear was not giving up !!! Poor Jube !!! So terrifying and horrific!!! We enjoyed this episode and storytelling Addicus!!! I sure as hell would have not had enough energy!! Lucky he survived!! I would have been exhausted 2 hrs!!! Good thing he played dead saved his life!! I feel it was a surprised defensive attack Thank Addicus for another spectacular episode!!! Night 💤💤💤 night
This is really horrific to think about. Something that is relentless in its determination to kill you is the stuff of nightmares.
Those Sloth bears 🐻 needs a name change. They aren't slow and just might be as dangerous as any other bear out there. Thank you 💛 Atticus for another great Scary Bear Attacks 🐻. Have a wonderful day today...
As a former Marine helicopter crew, I carry a Marine K-bar, a flight survival knife and third a medium size knife good for killing anything. Not even counting my lock-blade in my back pocket. If you live or wander around in bear country you should be prepared to fight anything for your life. He was a lucky man!
That was a tough one to get through. Sloth bears are crazy
Love the stories ! Plz don't ever Stop .
I would never go into bear territory without a heavy weapon
They can end up anywhere. I'm high plains desert Colorado where they don't usually roam and every few years one wanders in
Poor Jube! I’m glad he made it!
To Mr. Scary Bear Attacks gentleman: As a longtime subscriber, I want you to know that I sincerely appreciate how you always accept my comments. As you know, I dislike the word "harvest" when it comes to hunters killing bears for "sport". If a man has a high powered rifle and the bear doesn't even know the guy is there, then I am on the side of the bear if the hunter screws up or his rifle malfunctions. However, if a person is simply out for some enjoyment in the great outdoors and a bear sees him or her as lunch than my heart then goes out to the people who hunt down the bruin and terminate him or her.
I know a lot of subscribers here would not appreciate how I see things when it comes to wild animals and those who choose to "harvest" them for "sport".
How would the animal known as human feel if bruins hunted us for "sport"?
Anyway, thanks for allowing me to speak my piece now and then. Much appreciated.
It's like a horror story.
6 hrs!! Getting closer!!! Rooooarrrrrrrrr!!!🐻
2 hrs!!! Im drooling waiting to get into my popcorn!!! Anyday now!!! Rooooarrrrrrrrr 🐻!!?!!!!!!!!!!!
Looking forward to it! Thanks, Addicus!
Luv Luv Luv Scary Bear Attacks...... 🐾❤️
There is no reason not to carry a nice large 12" sharp knife?
I bet the idiot did after that ! 🤡
sloth bears seem very dog-like.
bears are in the dog family which is crazy
A horrible mauling for sure, but I'm having trouble believing the three hour part. The last thing I'd be doing would be to check my watch while being demolished by a bear. Minutes seem like hours when faced with similar tragedy, life and death incidents.
I'll say it again, I can't get over how much damage a human can survive. Survivors of such attacks just amaze me.
I think Jube provoke the sloth bear by fighting back. judging from attacks from bear most of the survivor skills they play dead. He was lucky to be alive; strong to walk after his attack.
why do I love this so much?
The Exorcist spawned mass hysteria outside the theater and therefore should be first. Hereditary is not scary and the plot is so derivative, but I guess no one remembers all of the previous movies.
Jube, you need to wear a shirt with *"S"*on the chest!!! WOW!!! 😮 A 3 hour round! 🤷🏾🤦🏾Jube probably prolonged the attack by not playing dead!! Great narrating Atticus!!
Gotta fight back
When you're actually close enough to be wrestling with a bear, would it be effective to get your fingers into their eyes? Do you think they'd run or just get more angry?
I think it felt like 3 hours of being attacked but it was minutes
I agree. I don't think even the world's best trained athletes, for instance professional boxers or Olympic wrestlers, could fight a bear that size for 3 hours.
Just listening to the story exhausted me. I can’t imagine trying to fend off a bear, or any animal for 3 hours and then walk all that way. I immediately though that. If he had a guardian dog it may have helped. I’m naholt Jube it ok now as much as he can be after that.
See ya tonight Addicus !!! Rooooarrrrrrrrr 🐻!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Never understood that why dont they make them some kind of bear spray they got all the spices an then some it is India pretty smart people
What’s up with that? Lions go for the throat while bears go for the face!
Gosh frightening amazing
Yayyyyyyuyy!! So excited ❤️❤️❤️me scnew episode scary 🐻 attacks heading my way in Griffith Indiana tonight!!! Rooooarrrrrrrrr 🐻!!!!!!!!!! 11 hours get here!!!!!! I'm counting down the hours!!!!!!!!😊🐻👍
Forget about having the strength to walk 3 miles how about having the strength Togo almost 3 to 4 hours of fighting this type of bear this guy must be a beast or just have Incredible strength in his jeans. The first time that bear took a breather I would have been running faster than and in the shape that this man was in Heather had no problem getting to the nearest camp
Got my Indiana extra butter popcorn ready for tonight!!!! Yummyyyyyy😋
3 hours ,better put on some pop corn 🍿
I hope you can make it to the live chat too!
These sloth bears might be more dangerous that griz and black bears...

Hey Derek, speaking of live stream, I am not sure how to do that. I need you guys to teach me how to do it because it sounds fun.
First, you need a hungry bear. Next you need a willing patsy...or as I call them "victim".....
Hey Addicus I have live streaming!! 💕 It!! Don't ask me how to do it I'm not smart at that either!! Lol!! My best friend Steph got me set up for that!!
