One thing that makes them so dangerous is that their top predators are tigers and leopards, ambush predators that can easily outrun them and follow them up a tree. So their only option is to fight like hell.

Awesome video that demonstrates how deadly they are. BBC always makes world class stuff. Every word of what Steve Backshall is saying is 100 per cent true. We were lucky to film a sloth bear in the jungles of Tadoba in Maharashtra, India. We did get a glimpse of those long claws and captured it in our video. Locals fear the bear more than the tiger. They say the sloth bear is a formidable opponent and even a tiger many a times stays away from challenging a sloth bear. We were lucky to film it for our channel.

What Baloo is actually supposed to look like, though even then Rudyard Kipling had his errors, as sloth bears are not brown and the diet described in the Mowgli stories, which consisted of roots, nuts and honey, has more in common with the Asian black bear. I've seen my fair share of screen adaptations and even the best such as Chuck Jones' "Mowgli's Brothers", Soyuzmultfilm's "Maugli" and Andy Serkis' "Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle" don't even look like sloth bears, especially in the case of "Maugli" where he was changed to an Asian black bear, but at least his diet matched. It is a shame, because they are truly a unique looking species.

She probably jumped in from a tree top. But I don't think the bears are in an enclosure, rather the fence was probably put up in an area of the jungle to keep the bears away from humans and poachers.
