Sloth bears are known for their propensity to behave aggressively toward humans, and are believed to be one of the most dangerous wild animals in India. So, it's probably best if you DON'T go running out like he did to go find yourself one!
They are actually quite timid as they try to avoid human contact and will usually only act aggressively if surprised or if someone gets too close to There cubs they also tend to be more aggressive in zoos
Every time I see the grey hair, it reminds me that with every day, we could lose our favorite childhood adventurers to age😢, I’m glad though that Chris and Martin are still here and continue to risk their lives for our knowledge.
Hey Kratt brothers, thank you for being such an inspiration in my childhood, your video games were the best, and it’s awesome to see y’all on RUclips. I’ve haven’t seen y’all in a while and I’m glad you guys are back.
"They're kind of near-sighted" Yeah, so that makes for great video opportunities.... *UNTIL* one gets close enough to notice you, and you startle it, and it's less than 10ft away from ripping your chest cavity open
I saw sloth bear in 2007 at the age of 2. I did know anything about animals. In 2013, when i read about sloth bear, i though it was a fictional animal until 2015. Sloth bear is the most common bear species of India. They are also found in Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka and extinct in Bangladesh.
Slothbear live along side deadly big cats they are hunted by them. They can't outrun or outclimb them so they fight to the death. If you surprise one it will fight until your insides are outsides
My daughter (probably about 8 at the time) played with a sloth Bear at the zoo in DC for about an hour. Separated by the acrylic glass, they ran , mimicked each other, blew at each other at the edges of the acrylic enclosure, and even sat beside each other when the needed a break. Simply awesome
Sloth bears are also pound to pound the strongest bears. At just 70-120kg, they go toe to toe even against tigers twice their weight or even more. There is a video of a female sloth bear fending off a dominant male tiger after a long fight.
Fascinating, I saw a video of a "sloth bear" on the NY Post's website. Of course, after Google, I found your informative website, I never knew bears to have a diet of ants. This bear is the "duck billed platypus" of the bear kingdom. It looks like a bear, in fact a koala, acts and hunts like an anteater, and paws resembles a sloth but not in speed. Nature has a funny way of blending creatures that defy the laws of nature.
On first watching the vid, I said to myself, "He reminds me of one of the Kratt Brothers." Surprised to see they're still doing nature videos. I grew up watching these guys as a kid a lot after school. Wild.
The bear instinct is to attack under all circumstances. Sloth bear doesn’t know how to run away or be scared. For them being scared means attack, attack now at all cost. Even if they know they will lose. So keep your distance
Well.... I am super lazy hence people call me a sloth bear and my name in my friend's contact list is *SLOTH* so there is a heart to heart connection between sloth bears and me😂😂😂
Your my hero’s Chris and Martin Kratt you taught me about animals and science. Since Kratts Creatures, Zoboomafoo and Be the Creatures and Wild Kratts. Wow Sloth Bears are really interesting creatures and I bet Disney took inspiration from the novel and made into a movie
Cheers... 'The Kratt Brothers' for the wonderful narrative of the Sloth bear. As you have mentioned, they are fascinating animals, especially piggyback behaviour.
They are still not adults. Bear cubs grow quickly in size and subadults are nearly the same size as adults. Male cubs are sometimes the same size as their mother which can be misunderstood to be the bears living in packs.
Sloth bears arent only "black bears", we all know for American black bear, the most iconic animal in america and canada, then we have its close cousin wich does compete with sloth bear in some indian parts, asian black bear much more rarer and much more agressive than their american counterparts, then we have sun bear, the smallest of the bears and completely aboreal and last is spectacled bear, the only bear of south america, the original paddington!
Yup! Like Chris mentioned, tigers will kill and eat sloth bears. It’s a predator with the mindset of prey. They’re also near sighted so they can be easily startled and attack in self defense
It’s amazing how well bears are designed to do what they do! Evolution has never explained how information gets added to a genome. Speciation happens through a loss of information not a gain of information. These bears are a testimony to the amazing information God put in the bear kind. This genetic variation allows for quick adaptation to various environments. Something evolution has no way of doing.
Hey it sounds like you might be really interested in the study of epigenetics! Apparently it backs up that Bible verse about children carrying the sins of their parents even up to the third or fourth generation. Might I recommend Mark Wolyn's "It Didn't Start With You?"

It is not safe to approach sloth bears like that, especially mothers with cubs. They kill dozens of people every year in India. Hard to tell whether this was a real encounter or just edited to look like he was close, but not a good example.
5-6 feet length is not small by any metrics, their height is 6-7.5 feet when standing on legs. The average length for a tiger(excluding tail) is 6 metres . Sloth bear may appear smaller due to their shaggy fur and slim body whereas most black, grizzly and polar bears are fat(in appearance atleast).
