Welcome back to Scary Bear Attacks! Today’s episode takes us to the Appalachian Trail, near a town called Glasgow, Virginia. The AT, as it is known in hiking circles, starts, or ends at the peak of Springer Mountain, on the border of Fannin and Gilmer counties in North Georgia. It winds its way through the states of Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Hampshire and ends in Maine. Most of the states that the AT goes through, have bear attacks that have been featured in one episode or another on our channel. It covers 2198.4 miles and most of those miles are through prime bear habitat. The trail hosts about 3 million hikers each year and most of those are day hikers.
Through hiking by contrast is hiking the entire trail in one 12-month period from beginning to end. It requires much more planning and discipline as coordinating the supply drops and support materials can be logistically challenging.
As you can imagine, the topography and geography of the trail varies but primarily consists of steep peaks and trails piercing through thick forests of pine, maple, fir, oak, spruce, and hickory. The undergrowth over most of the trail length is so thick that visibility is limited to under a few yards in much of it.
Animals that you may run into while hiking include white-tailed deer, elk, turkeys, and a myriad of smaller animals like skunks, possums, and raccoons. The predators long the AT include bobcats, coyotes, and black bears.
Near the tiny town of Glasgow, Virginia, the AT crosses the Amherst River. Due to the proximity of the town AT hikers often stop there to stock up on supplies, before continuing on the trek. Resting near a restocking location allows some hikers to refresh not only their supplies but also their spirits. They pitch their tents in the campsites dedicated to them along the trail and approaching the town.
Lilly and Town were AT-through hikers and were about two months into their hike when they reached the area around Glasgow. The month was May 2023, but as you can imagine, after hiking for two months, the pair had no idea what the precise day of the month was. Given that weather doesn’t always cooperate with hiking plans and motivation varies day by day, the couple didn’t generally hold too tightly to reaching their waypoints in their planned route. Taking it day by day and camping at an enchanting place, instead of your planned location added to the freedom and adventure of the experience.
On the day in question, the hikers had reached their last big climb of the day by late afternoon and were searching for a place to pitch camp for the night. Hoping to cover a few more miles before that, they had decided that they would pitch camp at around 7:30 PM wherever they found themselves.
Previously in the day, They had crossed a road to reenter the trailhead where they met up with some hikers headed in the other direction. As they passed each other the hiking group conveyed that the campground known as Matt’s Creek Shelter was closed due to a bear being seen in the area. Lilly and Town thanked the hikers for the information and continued on their way up the trail.
Given that their waypoints aren’t etched in stone, Lilly and Town weren’t exactly sure how far Matt’s Creek Shelter was. They were sure if they were even planning on staying there, but decided to cross that bridge when they got to it. Bear activity was a common topic of conversation for hikers on the AT, so the fact that it was mentioned didn’t draw much attention from either of the hikers. They had already passed several signs relaying the fact that bears had stolen food caches suspended from trees, so reports of bear activity were not as alarming as they should have been.
Now, Matt’s Creek Shelter lies on the west side of the James River. Lilly and Town were close to pitching camp for the night, and it was the nearest campsite to them. Their options were to stop before Matt's Creek or to cross the river before pitching camp.
As they hiked they passed a beautiful campsite that was still outside the boundary of the close portion of the trail. The campsite had a great view of the James River and was technically outside the closed area but only by a little.

Sorry I missed the live chat. Just wanted to mention that I feel like now that you are so very close to that 100k sub mark, maybe it's time to update your intro? Your narration has gotten really good and I think it would be nice to have your intro just as good. In particular, the part at the end of the intro that says "share to your social.....media". The word "media" sounds out of place due to the narration. Easy fix though. Just my 2 cents. Congratulations on nearly reaching 100k! Well Done!

Accidental deaths? Possibly some. But that was the same concern espoused by the anti gun people when firearms were allowed to be carried by people in Florida. Now they’re “allowed” in most states, I haven’t seen a real problem, except for criminals. As one who is well versed in the use of firearms and who carries all the time, I agree with aquariandawn4750, I’d much prefer to have a gun and not need it, than the other way around.
And even if you aren’t comfortable carrying a firearm, at least bear spray. This was truly a “scary story”. Nicely done and I’m glad it had a somewhat happy ending.

@@mostlyharmless7425 ; You're Spot On. I wholeheartedly have to agree with you on your statement.
First off, in the states that I'm familiar with, a person who wants to hunt has to first take a hunter safety course. During that safety course, the person is taught conservation and how to safely use said firearm.
Some people need to get educated on any topic before they spout off, ie; the person above who claimed there'd be accidental shootings (bradbradford). Heck, I have a driver's license and I've had several accidents, some my fault some the other party.

I happened to be on the AT this year. We were planning on camping in the Matt's Creek Shelter area, but we were warned by a Ranger that the area was closed to camping starting that day because a bear had stolen a pack and had been returning to campsites. That was on May 12th, so this must've happened just after we passed through if the closure was already in place. The tulip trees are incredible giants here and were in full bloom. This is a lovely place! The campsites along the river were amazing, but we kept on and crossed the river because we didn't know for sure what was included in the closed area. No trouble from any bears anywhere on the trail. I saw 2 of them, but had more trouble from humans threatening a fellow hiker at 1 am, the cops showed up but we didn't feel safe after they left so packed up and hiked out of there.

I really hate that they will re-locate dangerous bears instead of killing them. I had the misfortune of having to deal with one such bear at my remote cabin in Northern Ontario. One day, I discovered my shed door had been broken in and everything messed up. Hair and scat made it obvious it was a bear. A few days later, I observed a bear on the shore about 30 feet away, watching me fishing. An ear tag in each ear were clearly visible, making this a bear that had been in trouble at least twice. I yelled at it to see how it would react. It made a woofing sound and slapped at the water with a paw. I gave it some space and left the area but knew I had now inherited someone else's problem.
After that, I decided to carry my 12ga outside of the cabin. Less than a week later, I was returning to the cabin from fishing and the bear was actually standing on the dock, watching me come in. I hadn't brought my gun since I felt safe on the lake. I shouted and slapped the water with a paddle, about 20 feet from the bear, but it just stared at me. I decided to go across the lake where there was a trail to another cabin on a different lake about a mile away. As I approached the far bank, I looked back and was shocked to see the bear swimming towards me! I started paddling along the shore and the bear changed course to pursue me. I made a circle around it and managed to beat it to my dock and get into my cabin. This time I loaded my 45-70 and looked out the front window. The bear was at the bottom of my steps with one paw on the bottom step, looking at me through the window. By this time, I was more mad than scared, so I flung open the door and shot it and put an end to the drama.
I reported it to the MNR and was told it was a 200 pound sow that had been breaking into campsites in an area about 100 miles from my location. It seems like my cabin is in a zone they re-locate problem bears, so my troubles may not be over:(

Apparently it’s very difficult for thru hikers on the AT to carry a firearm. The channels ‘Kyle hates hiking’ and ‘Homemade Wanderlust’ both have videos on the subject. You go through so many states that require different permits, or don’t grant permits at all and some of the National Parks forbid guns also. Sometimes the trail takes hikers in a wiggly path repeatedly into and out of states that don’t grant gun permits to visitors. One could risk getting caught, but the legal penalties are quite severe. I don’t know firsthand, I’m from Ireland where we have neither bears nor guns, but it sounded like it was really difficult to hike the AT armed.
But dear god why no bear spray? If you’re not allowed weapons then you really would have that bear spray in arms reach at all times, wouldn’t you? I suppose I’m soft and scared because I have had a life without big predators or big wilderness. I don’t want to be the judge of these poor people. I’m saying that I sit here in my living room watching scary bear attacks and imagining that I would never go out in the woods without bear spray, I’m not saying that they should have had it. They conducted themselves with great bravery in a nightmare situation.

      Very insightfully well said.
The USA has many contradictions, this is one of them. The Bears, Wild Boars are all Fully Armed, so should people be as well, which according to the fundamental, individual 2nd, 4th and 14th Amendments rights law abiding persons should be allowed to be armed!
Some options for various Personal Safety Defensive Devices maybe possible upon researching verification which malum prohibitum laws may or do not apply.
If legal there are several options. Such as to carry a made up Survival Stick Spear,Carry multiple knifes and Hatchets if legal.
Black powder cap&ball percussion revolvers, and Higher powered Air Pistols could be other possible effective options that must be looked into by people.
I invented, a series of specialty bullets for use by responsible persons in Black powder cap&ball percussion revolvers, Muzzleloading Pistols and Rifles, Higher powered Air Rifles and Pistols as well as for modern metallic cartridge firearms, to be effective at quickly stopping attacking Bears and Wild Boars etc.

In all the stories I've watched, I never heard of anyone carrying a flare pistol for rescue signalling or as last resort, making the bear(s) have second thoughts about getting closer. I have found Kevlar forearm sleeves worn to protect forearms, wrists and top of hands (depending on model). Yeh, the blunt force from bear jaws and paw whacks will hurt, but you need to keep your blood inside your skin. I have to take a blood thinner so even an angry raccoon could put a hurt on me, until I pull out my new 10mm.😎

I do not get it many of the stories people are aware of bear around. These two were well aware there were bears in that area and were warned. The trail head was closed, but that did not stop these two to go into that direction. Granted they put the food high up, but to cook and eat near where they were going to sleep. That was an invitation for these bears, was it a good idea to call, yes at least the dispatcher knew they were in trouble. They were sending help but these two hikers made a choice that did save their lives. They left the camp sight in the dark eventually throwing rocks at the bear. But they calmly walked away forever watching the bears who was taunting them to run and they did not. But they did nothing to have protection and a pocket knife is not good protection, bear spray and a gun is at least a deterrent. These two are lucky, they were being tested and hopefully they learned a well scary lesson. The mom bear was hungry and she was doing what mom bears do, look for food. In the end their camping equipment was tattered and that is a reminder to take precautions. They did the right thing and left, so they can vlog, and tell the whole world of their experience. There was someone watching out for them and having slashed inflated beds hopefully taught them to be more prepared for the next time they may not be so lucky. So stay safe, warm/cool, and blessings.

I am rather shocked that the local EMS didn't have a S&R team more familiar with the area. Seems like with so many hikers out on the AT that there would be a lot of rescues that had to go into the wild.
As per your questions; yeah that's hella weird that the bears then went back and tore up their stuff. Very predatory for sure, especially since their aggressive behavior had already been reported.. And I think I would probably get off the trail, but these kinds of questions are always just speculation, no one ever really knows what one would do in a specific situation.

I am not opposed to carrying firearms in bear country but you must train with them. I believe for most people bear spray is a better option since pin point accuracy is not as important. You are sending out a fog. Although practice with the use of bear spray before you go on your hike is essential. Ideally, when in a group, everyone should have spray and at least one person should have a firearm. Just my opinion I'm not a expert.

Give the bears the benefit of the doubt. It's their habitat and people are the intruders. I've backpacked in black bear country and been very careful about food and surprising bears and been lucky to have only seen them in the daytime at a distance or young ones that shimmied up a tree in fear. This is going back decades. Not sure I'd camp in bear country any more especially unarmed as there are more people out there. Not sure which is more dangerous.

I would say predatory because they were not a perceived threat to the bears. The bear went back to where food was smelled. I can understand why they were scared to remain in the tent as the dispatcher told them to do. That bear’s curiosity and hunger for food wasn’t going to stop. I think I too would leave the tent. As far as finishing the AT thru hike, I would be nervous but would apply lessons learned. But all food and snacks and cooking clothing in the bear bag, cook much farther away from tent, and go get some bear spray, if not firearm. Then I might continue. Awesome channel.

I don't see a link to the blog you mentioned, but from your video this doesn't sound like a predatory encounter to me based on my 30+ years of experience backpacking in black bear habitat. If it had been, they would both be dead. The hikers made several mistakes. Cooking and eating too close to their tent, toiletries and other scented items in tent and on person when retreating from the bear, and no bear spray. Hiking in bear habitat without bear spray is a common rookie mistake, and I would definitely describe the vast majority of thru-hikers on the AT these days as backcountry rookies. The people suggesting firearms in the comments sound like rookies to me too. Unless you carry a shotgun loaded with slugs or a high powered centerfire rifle, neither of which are practical when thru-hiking, you're just going to piss it off. 00 or 000 buckshot might be effective with smaller bears, but it might not give you the penetration you need with a large black bear, depending on the range and where you hit it. Depending on where I am and the size of my group, I sometimes carry a .45 when backpacking, but that's for two-legged predators, and even then I also carry bear spray. If I were being stalked by a black bear, I'd rather have a handgun than nothing, but I'd much rather have bear spray than just a handgun. Statistically, it is much more effective.
