Welcome back to Scary Bear Attacks! Today’s episode takes us to the tundra strewn scrubland 40 miles away from Nome, Alaska. Nome first came to fame in the public eye in the early 1900’s due to a gold rush in the area. People flocked from around the world to try their luck at pulling gold from is desperate and hostile landscape. The city of Nome claims to have the largest gold pan in the world on display and its legacy as a gold rush town still dwells in the inhabitants here.
The climate here is a subarctic climate which means temperatures range dramatically from season to season. Since it is located near the sea, the humidity moderates these temperature swings, compared to more inland locations, but January still averages only five degrees fahrenheit and July averages at fifty two degrees fahrenheit. With just over seventeen inches of precipitation each year, this area sees a small amount of rain or snowfall on most days.
This land is rolling hills covered with Gray Willow interrupted by stands of Balsam Poplar and Black Crowberry trees. Bluejoint and Common Wood Rush are grass like plants that grow around every area with enough water to support them. Animals you might see if you visit Nome include Muskox, Moose and Caribou. The predators that prowl this area include Wolves, Wolverines and Brown Bear, but this is also the winter range for Polar Bears and their common companion, the Arctic Fox.
The Seward Peninsula has over 300 miles of gravel roads, which allows its visitors abundant access to remote locations, but some of these locations are so isolated that in the event of a problem, you may be on your own to solve it. The surf pounds the rocky shore which gives way to sandy beaches while glacial streams bubble up from subterranean aquifers providing the visitors, animals and plants pure and clean water for survival.
On July twelfth, twenty twenty one, Richard Jesse was heading out to his remote mining camp. He was approaching his sixth decade in life, and his values were changing. He didn’t mind being alone, in remote locations while he searched for gold and basked in the solitude of the area. He had brought his four wheeler in to help his search the area around his mining site and had a towable trailer he pulled behind it, to haul his gear. He did bring a cell phone but not an emergency beacon, as it seemed counter intuitive to the isolation and privacy the area offered him. If he needed help, he clearly understood that he would simply call for it on his cell phone. He also neglected to bring bear spray as he didn’t plan on having any problems with the bears in the area. They had never bothered him much before, so why would this trip be any different? The only self defense item Richard had brought with him was his pistol, though it isn’t clear what brand, make or caliber it was. He brought about a box of pistol ammo with him, just in case.
Before departure, Richard had made sure to tell his friends where he was going and what time he should be back. This is a basic responsibility of anyone going into the backcountry, but if something tragic happens before your return time, you may end up in a life and death struggle until your deadline arrives and searchers are notified and rounded up to find you.
Just after arrival, Richard hopped on his four wheeler and pulls his trailer a few hundred yards from his mining camp. He had been searching for gold in the creek that meanders through the willows around his camp, and had decided to pan in a spot he hadn’t searched before. As he drove along the creekbank his vision was filled with an angry brown bear closing in on him.
For a moment, Richard was unsure if the bear may simply run past him, but as it closed in, he could see its eyes focused on him and nothing else. It was clearly not trying to escape to safety, but to confront him with its teeth and claws.
The giant bear easily flipped over Richard’s fourwheeler and small utility trailer as if they were toy cars. In the blur of an attack, the brown bear knocked the man to the ground and clamped its jaws onto his ankle. It began dragging him toward the creek and he was certain it was taking him into the cover of the willows, where no one could intervene in the attack.
As the bear drug Richard across the rocks along the bank of the river, he managed to pull his pistol out. He fired once at the bear, which immediately released its grip on his ankle. Scrambling to his feet, Richard scampered through the willows and grass, back to the relative safety of his camp site and locked himself inside his make shift cabin.
This wasn’t the end of the confrontation for the bear. It could have easily licked any wounds it may have had from Richards pistol, if he even hit it, and went on its way. Instead the bear followed him back to his cabin. Животные
Always good to come home and wind down listening to Scary Bear Attacks ! I wish this channel had an official podcast tho, the narration is just so calming!
We had a channel on Spotify last year, but discontinued it at the end of last year. We are automatically published to Google Podcasts straight from this channel though. FYI. I hope this helps!
@@scarybearattacks what
Simple solution, put an arrow or slug thru the bears chest and hang him high unless you want two. Good meat for winter.
@scarybearattacks you should try and get a bear spray sponsorship
He had a pistol ?
Richard’s biggest mistake was his complacency. Going into big bear country with no rifle, no bear spray, no emergency beacon was just dumb. At least he had a pistol, but that wouldn’t have helped him if that helicopter hadn’t seen him when it did.
I agree, posted almost the same sentiment b-4 I read yours.
Mike. 1 shot in the bears face would be enough. Contrary to popular beleifs a bears skull is NOT bulletproof. Even a 22 L.R. will punch right through & scramble a bears brain instantly. However, this clown was a walking disaster just waiting to happen, and it finally did. When the bear was looking in the windows it would have been an easy shot. Just gotta remember who's the TOP of the food chain. WE are! God gave us a brain, were suppost to use it. Lil old bushlady lived alone out here for decades. Only had a short bbl, single shot 22 L.R. rifle & she killed lots of bears. Shot em in the eye or up the nose as soon as they looked at her. Took the meat she wanted & let the other critters have the rest. No law in the bush except keep your wits about you & THINK!
@@tristantimothy1004 I respectfully disagree, but only on 1 point. I've shot a black bear @ 75yds w/.308 & this is where I disagree, I was aiming for the eye but hit the brow above it. The bullet followed the curvature of the skull & took out a portion of spine. So like the lil o granny you mentioned she aimed for the eye or nose that would do it maybe(had a friend shot 3x w/22mag, he beat the guy down & held him @ gun point. The bad guys gun till cops arrived) but I certainly would not use a .22cal. for the job. I've killed & eaten 5 black bears. So I've got limited experience compared to those who kill 1 every yr or so. My only disagreement was on that point. All else I agree w/u.
@tristantimothy1004 Idk, granny must have been one hell of a shot. There's stories of people shooting grizzlies with 308s and still was mauled to death. Sure, the shot was fatal. But it doesn't matter, bears are lightning fast and it takes less than 30s to be killed by one. A grizzly can literally knock your head off with one swipe. That's why hunters aim for the shoulders in order to incapacitate them from coming after you once they shoot them.
Agree; I feel the same way. Bears are wild animals and they do what wild animals do. To think otherwise is just...fill in the blank
I have to think this attack was predatory. If it was defensive the sow would have knocked him down and kept him down. Once he went into his cabin he wasn't a threat he was a source of food.
100% once the same bear comes around 3 times and shows no fear you have to kill it
The bear attacked likely out of necessity
@@hookergetlucky3216 And he should have shot it until it was dead... out of necessity.
Many years ago I guided brown bear hunters for over twelve years in Alaska.. I do know a little about bear behavior and how to stay safe in bear country. People will spend $1000.00 on a phone or a camera without even thinking about it. A personal locator beacon can be had for $350.00. In case of any emergency in the wilderness, this can save your life ! If you are going into bear country, have a weapon to protect yourself, at least a .44 magnum pistol. If this isn't possible, always have bear spray where it's very handy, not in your pack ! Many times you will only have seconds to respond in a bear attack. To say the least, grizzlies are very unpredictable and a black bear may want you for a meal. Go into the wilderness prepared or don't go.
@Oregonminer1, Great advice and from a trusted and experienced source! THank you!
Or a 10mm with more rounds and less recoil than the 44.
Bears are no joke, they are smart, fast, and very deadly. Never go into the bush alone and always arm yourself before you go.
You'd be suprised how many tourists and joggers up here, go on the trails without any form of protection whatsoever.
Fact is you are far safer unarmed in the alaskan wilderness bush than at midnight IN DOWNTOWN LA
Or NYC.

Lol yeah
Just didn't wanna go through all 50 states
The bear was not returning nightly for tea and conversation -- these were predatory visits!
For someone who spent years in the Alaskan bush, he was totally unprepared. She should have a rifle, a pistol (10m or 44 mag. plus bear spray and a more secure pocket for his cell phone and he should have never been by himself alone in this area. He should have known better. He is very lucky! To me, it is not important which or why the bear attacked. He was not prepared
Had a similar thing happen in Denali park area. Old bush cabin, built bearproof. Bear circled the cabin all night long huffing & popping his jaws. Poor Jerome, my friend, THE most bearanoid guy in Alaska was having heart attacks all night. I had my 45/70. Slept like a baby knowing if by some odd 1/1000 chance that bear actually was to break in that bear/ avalanch proof cabin Jerome would be flipping out & wake me up in plenty of time to shoot the bear in the face & end that nonsence permanently. ONE of us had to get some sleep & it sure as hell wasnt going to be him in his terror. Come dawn the bear finally left. Thoes old timers sure knew how to build cabins. Trees tough as nails, solid beam roof with several feet of dirt/ sod overlay. Double beam bearlocked door. Floor solid beams interlocked. Small windows all around no bear could have squeezed into & we could still shoot out of. Would have taken a bulldozer to break in. Bear never had a chance of entry. Next morning after i fixed breakfast we looked all around through all the small windows & i went out first w rifle ready but that bear was GONE. Just a lil bitty twinkie bear anyway, only an 8 footer. This guy could have easily shot that bear in the face through the window but scared folks dont think clearly & DO what needs being done at the moment. 1 shot, in the eye, up the nose or just under the ear would have ended that B.S. instantly. Size dosent matter when you shoot them in the brain.
Excellent point about shooting the bear in the brain pan. Lure him to a small window and pop him thru the eye. Even if the bear survives it will flee for good.
That is an amazing story @tristantimothy1004! Would you be willing to do an episode on it?
@@YUHJKT , Bear WONT survive an eye shot. I knew an old bushlady & all she had was a bolt action, single shot, short bbl 22 L.R. rifle . She killed tons of bears with that gun over the decades. She was a snap shot & said she shot the bears in the eye, up the nose or just as the base of the ear sideways & brained em all the moment they looked at her. Never even gave em a chance to even THINK about attacking her. If a 22 will do that, imagine what a high powered bear pistol would do. Only place that bear would have gone is DOWN.
@@scarybearattacks , Sure, why not. The entire story is kinda long but it's not one of your regular stories. Nobody gets hurt, not even the bear. Happy ending. Jerome was living with us for awhile. After that episode he started his own personal bear proof cabin on our land but never finished it. I found out he'd dropped out of college, abandoned his family, hitch hiked to Alaska to become a bushman & I picked him up hitching & he stayed w us s few months. Good kid, but he had better options & he just wasn't cut out for the bush life. His FEAR of bears was making him a nervous wreck so I sent him back to college & his family. Some folks are ment for the bush, some aren't & he wasn't. In any case, what's your Email? I'll be in touch.
I was thinking along those lines. Why not open a window and shoot the bear? Maybe the cabin didn't have windows or the windows couldn't be opened without significant risk.
Id say this was predatory if it tried a whole week thats not defense, that bear wanted to eat him
100%. I live in Alaska and once the same bear comes around 3 times you kill it. It's stalking you at this point
People are foolish, your in the wilderness, you don’t venture out by yourself, without bear spray and a big rifle. Yes, I think this was the same Bear all along, Richard is a lucky man.
Exactly what I said! I'm not even an outdoors person and I thought, no rifle or bear spray? Also alone....
Richard was extremely lucky to be found when he was. His days were numbered for sure. He was also ill prepared to deal with dangerous encounters, whether man or beast. I'm thinking it was the same bear and was a predatory stalking. Obviously, he's not a subscriber to this channel. That was a good scary episode Atticus. Thanks for all you do.
ur correct. brown bears are super smart. I've read books about actual bear maulings and how two avoid them. but many bear hunters and elk hunters have been ripped up because they shot a bear. didn't kill it but wounded it enough that the bear set up in buck brush or amongst trees and fool of angry adrenaline ambushed an ripped into the hunters killing some severely wounding others. it's just plain idiotic to hunt solo.
That's about the most psychoIogicaIIy terrifying bear attack l can think of. To be attacked, and then have the bear (or another one ?) return every night to terrorize you even more.
Your home is supposed to be your fortress. I bet he fortified his door and cabin after that and upgraded to more fire power.
l'm gIad he survived it ❤
Yes psychological torture! I think he only survived because he used his brain and didn't panic.
@@elsablue54, NO! He DIDN'T use his brain. Not from the very beginning. Went in undergunned, not enough backup ammo, no dog, had his head up his tailpipe before he ever left town. That entire area is known for POLAR BEARS. He was lucky it was only a griz. And a very inexperienced one. I know that " cabin". It's a shed any teenager could rip apart. He also could have shot the bear in the face ( where it's brains at) through the window. No dear heart. This guy's an idiot & only his guardian angels saved his butt. He deserved much worse. You don't think that cloudbank that made the chopper detour around it was an " accident" do you. THAT was Divine intervention. God loves stupid people too.
"It is very unusual to have several encounters with the same bear. Which makes Richard's case very unusual." Without this poetic line i wouldve never connected the dots
Never underestimate a bear's propensity to Ruminate!
★ Not knowing the distance from the attack site to his cabin, I think the "bear with cubs" idea sounds about right. I would really be wanting to get that cellphone back, but the risk seemed too great because, his firearm also seems to have been inadequate. He's very fortunate .
@charlesmudd9834, Your mind went exactly where minded! The only reason I can think of that he didn't try to get his cell phone back is because he knew he didn't have cell service. Otherwise that would have been my top priority too.
@scarybearattacks ★ Yes. Seems it would. And thanks for replying. Really enjoy your content and the work I'm sure you put into it
Why didn't Richard have a rifle , out there in the wilderness ?
Mohand, can you spell complacent moron because this guy obviously couldn't. Stupid hurts & complacency kills & this guy's guardian angels were sure working that event. 😁
Because Richard was very foolish.
Always have my trusty Benelli, M4 H2O, packed with slugs!!
Lots of people think a handgun is sufficient but you just can't get the same punch as a rifle
ATF and the liberal democrat,,,decided that he did need one. Besides the only people that should own firearms are the slave masters (government).💥💥💥
Why don't people remember that fire is a formidable defense? Had he started a fire near his front door, and a few around the cabin it could have helped him. Fire is a very awesome weapon, torches make a great defense tool against animals.
Interesting story. My advice if possible never go into the back country alone and always be appropriately armed including ammo. Always let a responsible person aware of your intended plans and route. A high power rifle is your best friend with the best range. less so a large caliber pistol. When encountering a large predator , the best view will be through the sights of your rifle. Only a fool would talk to large brown bear and attempt super natural communication. Pepper spray gives the false feeling of security and spices you up very nicely for a hearty meal for a large predator ( don't for get the salt and and oregano). Any false move by a large predator should be met with a hail of bullets that will surely make this large predator respect several thousand years of human weapons evolution.
Snappy, not always possible to have company along & gold prospectors don't want ANYONE ELSE knowing their locations. " Friends" usually have big mouths ( especially when drinking) & theives will come, torture you for info & kill you & drag the body out where bears will eat the evidence. This ol boy knew that so secrecy was paramount. He was pretty stupid thou on NOT being prepared for an emergency. No bear 😮RIFLE, no dog, no locator beacon. All rookie mistakes & he should have known better. Nome area is known for polar bears too. Add, thoes cabins are a joke. I've seen em & a boisterous teenager could rip one apart. This guy's guardian angels saved his butt because it sure wasn't his intelligence.
@@tristantimothy1004 If you take me along , I won't tell your location and I'd bring a very big gun.
Using a rifle doesn't work all the time because sometimes bears ambush and there is no time to orient the barrel to it. It happened before and i heard in one case the bear bent the barrel with the paw.
A large caliber pistol in a chest holster as a back up is needed
@@snappymcburpy7629 , Ya, I bet you would. You & 1000 others. But that was back when I still lived in Nome & it's a shithole I wouldn't curse anybody with. I originally went up there as a prospector & that was a total failure. Only 1 in 1000 actually finds enough to live on & 1 in a million hits the jackpot. It's just not worth going back to. I wound up driving a cab for 2 years to make enough $ to escape it. The cost of living is astronomical & 1 greedy bastard owns most of the town & he owns the courts, the town govt & all it's officials. Most corrupt shithole I've ever seen & it's far worse than Chicago or L.A. . IF you got lucky & the odds are thin, his crew would kill you, take your gold & disappear your body.
@@JamesJames-jt3ts you would agree having something appropriate is better than NOTHING ?
By all means stay in the cabin where your 12gauge shotgun lives it's life, along side a healthy supply of 12ga. slugs. Going into bear country or anywhere in the wild's w/o a large cal. handgun & a 12ga or hunting rifle is a fools game, what's the likely chance of encounter? Very low I guess, but what's the chance of living through an encounter if it happens w/o essential protection if it does? Again, very low, I guess! The old guy was lucky, plain & simple. The weather saved his life, probably.
I agree, every time I shoot my 12gauge shotgun I'm in awe of its sheer knock-down power.
I can't imagine the horror he experienced. Happy he survived but what a nightmare! No doubt he won't make that mistake again. Definitely stay in groups and keep a suitable firearm and sufficient ammunition.
“Stay in groups” is the strategy sheep use in wolf encounters.
Bears are intelligent creatures and enjoy the selection opportunities of humans in groups.
Biggest problem with that is if you actually want to get out in the wilderness and do stuff as often as me or others like me, you cannot rely on other people to be with you! Carry a hand gun only as a back up! I carry a Benelli M4 packed with slugs as a primary!
@@Coonhound719Yes, if you are an avid outdoorsman, it’s next to impossible to always have a companion. Instead, I walk in bear country where I live (NW Montana south of Glacier N. P.) with two hounds as my Early Warning System. I carry a Model 71 Winchester in .348Win, with one round chambered, and an S&W model 57 in .41mag on my belt. I stay away from Willow thickets by the streams and leave the berry patches to the bears. That still leaves me a lot of Montana to hike.
You have the most pleasant voice. You also never let us down. Thank you.
Thank you Brandywine658! Take care!
I’m enjoying the geography details and history of the area. You’re getting better and better at these stories.
Thank you for sharing Richards' story.
I think it was the same bear. Could have been defensive attack at first, startled by four wheeler. Because I believe it was same bear that followed him to his cabin, when it followed him it was a predatory. I don't blame Richard for not going out to look for his cell phone, because he was already injured and the bear may have smelled him while he was searching. I don't know if he would have escaped a second time and his door was already removed. What could he have done if the bear chased him back to his cabin? Not possible to outrun a bear, even if he wasn't injured.
Richard shouldn't have gone out in bear country alone. Even with someone he should have had a weapon with plenty of ammo for defense.
Nome is a very cold place, only 52° even in the summer.
For it to be a defensive attack, you would have to believe that the bear didn't hear the quad coming. I believe it was a predatory attack from the start.
@nathanadrian7797 maybe, depending on how fast the 4 wheeler was going. Definitely moving faster than say a jogger or hiker would be moving. But maybe it was predatory from the start.
@@louisegoins7630 Regardless of the speed of the quad, the bear should hear it coming for hundreds of yards unless the creek drowned it out, but the action of the bear(dragging him out of sight) seems very predatory to me. That said, he should have been carrying a rifle on the quad, a pistol is a great tool to get you back to your rifle!
@nathanadrian7797 maybe. I'm not a bear expert.
I know I wouldn't go into bear country unarmed or alone. Apparently he has done this so many times he was just to comfortable.
Were there cubs? Perhaps a recent kill? Maybe the water drowned out the sound until he was on him?
I'm glad he made it out alive.
Why wouldn't he escape a second time? What do you think he was carrying, a pee shooter? One shot to the head is all it takes. He doesn't have to wait for a charge. First sighting when the bear's close enough, it gets it to the brain.
This is a god send. I've been airport waiting for most of the day. This is like cool water on a hot, humid day. Thank you!
Glad you like it!

I’m glad Richard made it through this scary bear attack.
I do think it was the same bear each night! How terrifying that must have been! I can’t even imagine.
It is possible the bear was protecting her cubs. But it’s hard to know for sure in this instance.
That bear going back every night shows what an apex predator she was! He is certainly blessed to have made it out in one piece!
Most likely was the same bear
Here in Alaska you always prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
Terrifying! He did the right thing staying locked inside as best as he could. God was with him!
Wow. Scary that this bear kept up its determination for DAYS! In answer to your questions, yes -- this bear had initial intention to make a meal out of him, and yes, the same bear kept at him. He was very smart to put an SOS on his roof -- with regard to looking for his phone, there's no way to second-guess his EXACT situation. The decision to search for the phone would have been easier if he had more ammo.
Pretty frightening if that was the case though
AT LEAST HE HAD THAT PISTOL, otherwise he would have need of a undertaker rather than a doctor ⚡⚡⚡

Whew, poor guy must have been terrified!! This one will give me nightmares tonight, I'm sure!! lol 😱
I think Richard did all he could and showed how capable he was by getting to his revolver as quickly as he did. Yes, it was the same bear. The smell of blood attracted him to his possible kill and he continued his attempts to reach this source of food. Richard was smart in not leaving the cabin - even for the outdoor plumbing. He did the only option he had - the SOS on the rooftop just in case someone might see it. He had only two bullets left - a very sorry situation. He was careless in that he didn't fully realize the danger he could put himself in by going alone and unprotected except for the revolver - which did save his life. Bears are all different, much as we are.
Richard could have had extra ammo and a locator beacons, tried to build a better cabin. This bear wanted to eat him.
Pure nightmare fuel. Maybe the attack started out defensive but turned predatory. No idea if you should expect a bear defending cubs to try to get you for 4 days.
60 years old and he hasn't learned anything yet. Amazing
True dat! I feel like some kind of crucial detail, element, etc is missing in this account. 60 years and it sounds lik the kind of mess a 18 yearold Manhattan kid would stumble into. A true story 'rings true, this does not. No valuable insights. Few interesting details. Smells like pasta. Tht being said, i enjoyed it. Ty
Complacency kills.
Stupid stupid..... By saving this man they short circuited Natural selection . A mild handgun in a wimpy caliber? Stupid. 10mm auto is minimum ,357magnum w non expanding bullets also marginal but still lifesavers. Plenty of good holsters for constant wear. No rifle , a decent lever action or Bolt Rifle in a good caliber is not that expensive. 44magnum lever actions are a good minimum. The 45-70 is much better in a scout configuration making it easy to keep slung and ready. I live near Baltimore, a craphole blue city with daily murders.Intelligent people w carry permits wouldn't think of being un-armed here.
This one was so 😨, imagine being in that cabin when darkness and 🐻 welcomes you.
This guy was incredibly lucky to have been found and rescued. But for the weather, the helicopter wouldn't have flown anywhere near him. I can't believe an experienced outdoorsman wouldn't see the risks in how he prepared. He learned the hard way, but absolutely I think it was the same bear and I think it was tired of fish and berries and was really craving red meat.
Glad he was able to escape the situation! He sure needed a good rifle or at least a shotgun! I wonder what a 3 1/2 inch shotgun shell ,buckshot or high powered slug would do to a bear!I have never talked to anyone that has shot a bear with a 3 1/2 shotgun shell! The only ones I have ever talked too used a 3 inch shell and it worked pretty good!😎
Love your show Bro 👍. Thank you for all you do. 🙏✌🏼🙏
@Robertarmes4724, thank you very much! It would be nothing without you guys who watch our channel.
I do believe it was the same bear. And he’s very lucky to be alive. I think you said he had a 9mm pistol? Shooting a bear with that caliber will only feel like a bee sting and from what I’ve heard about brown bears is that they will continue hunting their wounded prey until they get what they want. It was a godsend that the helicopter had to change its direction.
A good ending to a good story, thanks buddy for all you do... 💯👍🐻
I think it may have been different bears, due to the large population. Maybe Richards wounds were drawing other bears from the smell of blood. Richard got lucky ✌️thank you as always.
I like how they say o make noise or wave your hands and back away slowly 😮 when the only thing I hear is it's me or you 😮 so no just kill the mother flapper
Richard definitely had his guardian angel through this terrible scary time of being consistently visited at his camp!! Very blessed to have held on that long!!! This part was definitely predatory. I wonder too if this was the same bear he initially had contact with? If it was another bear this man just has terrible luck? I would stay out of woods forever! 🧐🤣🐻 thanks SBA always the very best presentation and useful info 👍😍…….. BTW Richard was very unprepared being in this territory with so many dangerous predators! He should stay home anyway.
If it was a moma bear she would have left after the initial attack. This bear wanted to eat human but might have gotten a taste of lead instead If Richard was able to stay outside long enough to write SOS on the roof the bear may have wandered off, found other food or succumbed to the GSW. Regrdless of the type of gun used, high penetration ammo is the best way to get through the thick hide, hair and layers of fat.
It was the same bear. Especially if he wounded it. They have a vengeance streak in them so this bear was returning looking to eat him. The old gronar story on this very channel shows a bear can revisit you time and time again
Thanks you have an interesting channel ❤ I’m really enjoying the videos
Let's get scary!
Ok then, let's also, LET'S GO BRANDON!!!
@@hawkeye1376yes yes, BUT let's also get some new material
Smart of him not to wonder out to look for his phone. The bear was certainty in the area waiting, as they do. He had an ankle injury so he couldnt outrun it. At least he had his trusty sidearm, not only did it save him when the bear grabbed him, but it saved him when the bear broke through the door. Bear spray cannot do that.
You can’t outrun a bear even without an ankle injury
I would never go outside in that area without a weapon!
Ladder, saw, hit the rafters. Cut thru the roof! Dam, he did! lol
Another great story!!❤❤
Richard survived because he was lucky. Sometimes that’s all it takes but luck can turn the other way and we would never know what happened to Richard other then he is missing.
You'd think a person would know to never let your guard in Bear Country. Don't use your own Bear imagination just because you ain't never seen a bear when you're out. "I thought-I thought--I ain't never seen a Bear when I'm out. I'm glad he made it out alive. Maybe next time he'll never let his guard down.
A fine narrative. Good job.
I’ve come to appreciate just how clever and dangerous bears can be. Many thanks to Scary Bear Attacks for educating me. I was quite naive in regards to many things about bears. I had no idea how fast these animals can move and for a sustained period of time. The guy was absolutely lucky. Most likely it was the same bear. I did a lot of hunting when I was younger but not in bear territory. You can never over-protect yourself when you are wondering the woods solo!
6 decades will give one lots of confidence and self assurance.
😁😁"as he had claimed, he had never had problems with bears in the area" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The suspense must have been unreal
THANKS!👍
I wouldve set up traps/deterrents all around the cabin after that 1st night when the bear came back.
Bears are uber apex predators. Bears are, in addition to being fast and armed to the teeth and claw, THINKERS.
In the wild the average human may not be Yogi and smarter than the average bear.
Amazing eyesight on those pilots, being able to count how many rounds the man had in his pistol from the air....
I love “scary bear attacks” liked and subscribed ❤
Have you done a video on Old Ephriam, or Ol’ Three Toes, down in Logan, Utah? Long time ago, but an interesting story.
Going into grizzlys' country with no 12 gage rifle?! O-h, Richard! O-h, people!
Short of having a more effective weapon for bears, I don't know what Richard could have done differently. He handled it pretty well IMO.
Thanks to that helicopter he just bear-ly made it! Absolutely terrifying having those quiet moments with the beast outside trying to get in. More guns and more everything next time. Would love to see a pic of the cabin.
@babysnarf4697, The pictures of the cabin in the video is the actual cabin. Thanks for your sense of humor :)
The fact that that bear stayed at that cabin so long and kept cot ACN is truly terrifying!! Maybe if he had spray along with his firearm would’ve helped. I don’t know. Wow. Hey, I’m a long time listener and I’ve subscribed as well. Let ve your stories. Thank you.
WOW! GLAD I DON'T LIVE THERE! GREAT VID SCARY!
I have read stories about bears in Yellowstone who find wildlife photographers as convenient as meals on wheels. The park rangers claim the remains of unlucky solo artists consist of two boots or shoes, sometimes the feet still inside and not much else...
So why did Richard even bring a pistol if he wasn't going to use it? A bear scratching on my cabin and looking in the window is going to get a head full of lead, reload and repeat.
I agree. One is none, two is one and three is for me. One is a air horn, two is bear spray and three is a high power show ender.
Just as important as caliber is bullet construction. For handgun ammo get hard cast flat nose heavy for caliber bullets to give yourself a decent chance. Couple of brands include Buffalo Bore and Underwood.
That is an excellent point! I am loaded for home defense in my forty and that always worries me when I take it to the woods and forget to change ammo.
I think it was the same ber and it was predatory. No cub was seen and the bear could smell blood. He was a lucky man in the long run. I'm glad he was ok.
When the bear looked in the window I would of shot the bear in the eye if possible.
Mark. YOU have the RIGHT idea!! Only takes ONE brain shot to end that nonsence. When it came through the door he SHOULD have been close enough to shoot it in the face where one couldn't possibly miss.
What I learned from this story is that when it comes to cases, the only reason Richard is still alive is the pistol.
Mike, he SHOULD have had a dog along & never gottin attacked to begin with.
@@tristantimothy1004Are you kidding? Many times a dog causes a non-attack situ to become an attack situ. Bears don't always flee or fear from a dog.
@@markstone1619 , Easy to tell you absolutely no bear experience at all. Dogs are an alarm. YOU shoot the bear. Next time you want to inject your opinions, try having some REAL WORLD experience first.
@@tristantimothy1004 A couple of weeks ago, Atticus related a story about a woman killed by a bear because the dogs pissed the bear off and brought him to her. Sure, a dog may give an early warning, but if I had to choose between having a dog with me or a firearm, I'd take the firearm cocked, locked and ready to rock 10/10 times.
@@mikemelina7395 , And That bud is why you TRAIN the dog first. A loose running mutt is an absolute liability. Add, she should have been ARMED. Bears are always armed, people in their areas should be too. THAT cannot be stressed enough. I had a loose running dog bring me a pissed off cow moose once. They're just as if not MORE dangerous than a bear is. Only they're not trying to eat you, just stomp you to mush. Very dangerous, short tempered, mean assed animals. That was just a young dog w/o enough training time yet. A valuable learning experience for both of us WAY back in the very early days before we learned better. Sad the women hadn't learned that yet.
Whata friggin nightmare.
You're not kidding. Hell, I have bear nightmares just watching this channel. I can't imagine being the topic on one.
Since he was on a quad when the initial attack happened, I would suspect that the bear mistook Rickard as some kind of prey animal instead of a human. I say that as I've rode up on deer and they see me but they don't bolt like they normally would if I was walking. They don't know what I am. But as soon as you stand up and get off the machine, then they see you and they bolt. I'm wondering if this is the same kind of situation. The bear just didn't know what he was and assumed he was some kind of prey animal. That would make sense as to why it continued to return thinking it wounded it's prey.
Just a thought.
I want a porcupine suit
Gotta love these fools who think they know what nature is all about. Glad he survived this and learned a lesson. All the experience in the world can’t prepare you for the one experience you haven’t encountered. Nature is not a Disney movie.
I would think a direct shot from any caliber pistol, (even a 22 ) to the nose would send any bear scurrying. If he was looking in the window, or sniffing a crack at the door, I probably would have tried that .
Great show weapon saved his life for sure 💥
It was obviously the same bear, and it was predatory! They can all become predatory, depending on the time of the year!
This is definitely Joe Rogans favourite channel to listen to when he goes to sleep
Predatory bear looking for an easy meal. Same bear each night as he was in what it considered its territory, it would probably fight with another bear in its territory.
I believe it was the same bear that came to his cabin and he was predatory. Richard did the right thing by not venturing out to find his cell because I think the bear was stalking him. You won't catch me out there, especially alone. He should have had another human with him and extra bullets. It was good that he got on the cabin roof to do the SOS
he should have been better armed. Larger caliber, etc. You should always have a secure place for your phone or communications, Zipped or buttoned down pocket. Just the noise of the motor could have made the bear angary
It’s amazing how that guy wrote SOS and that the helicopter saw him!
Well obviously when on his 4 wheeler he should of changed direction to get away from the bear! Those bears are so fast its mind blowing! 10x faster than you would think!!
There's always a first time never take anything for granted ever especially in bear county
That was a good point about the bear smelling the blood from his injured ankle! Bears smell is good they can what was in their walking trail for 3 days!! Meaning if you walked across a trail that a bears walks on they can smell you for 3 days after you crossed it! That is bananas to think about!
First mistake: Thinking: "Oh, the bears have never bothered me before so why would one bother me now?"...LOL...smh.
He must done a lot of shooting if he took a box of bullets that's usually 50 rounds. If he only had two left that's 48 rounds. Even if he hit it a quarter of them that's 12 times even a small caliber would be tough to survive.
He didn't expected trouble especially a bear. He went into woods for peace and quiet.
You are always prepared for anything in Alaska, as a 30 resident, I know you can die in Anchorage from bear mauling, moose stomping, or wolf encounters. That is in Alaskas biggest city!
Hhhmmmm, never had a problem with bears before. The following comments will be kept to myself. Richard will hopefully be able to instruct others how to hit the wilderness properly. I have to wonder if Richard really learned a lesson or not.
So many days in grizzly country alone panning for gold lucky I've been able to scare bears away. Using a good panic alarm with stung warning string will give you heads up when sleeping.
You would have to be a super accurate shot to hit the bear with a pistol in a spot that would kill it.
Pro tip:
Reports of inner urban bears are becoming increasingly more common. Underground carparks are now no go zones. Valet parking may be your best bet.
