    Video #1 Excerpt
After the two loaded and bound a large bag of the moose carcass onto the packboard, Austin helped Matthew get the pack up on his back and away he went. Matthew walked the short distance back to camp in about ten minutes or so, then turned around and headed back to pick up more. He undoubtedly anticipated that by the time he got back to the moose carcass Austin would already have the next section ready to load.
As Matthew was walking through the dense vegetation about 50 yards from where the carcass was, he glanced up as a frightening scene filled his vision. He saw a large brown bear, in full charge mode, steaming toward him. He immediately shouldered his rifle and fired a warning shot, then another and one more. The bear continued toward him until it got within about 20 feet. Then it flinched as if it had been struck by something, and veered off from its attack. Matthew watched as the bear continued out of the area, and placed his rifle back across his shoulder so he could continue to the carcass and Austin.
Matthew came around some of the vegetation hiding the impromptu butchering site, and saw Austin laying on the ground. He was clearly dead as his body was torn up by a bear, and possibly the bear he had just shot at.
Matthew immediately began jogging back to the radio at camp. He called out to the air taxi and relayed the details of Austin’s condition. The air taxi service notified the Park Service and the Alaska Wildlife Troopers and they flew out immediately.
Video #2 Excerpt- By late afternoon, Erwin was climbing up the trail. The peace of the early day had given way to gusts of wind, distorting sounds and twisting scents carried on the air. This is where the evidence gets a little confusing. The biologists contend that they had put up warning signs informing the public of the research they were doing on the bears in the area. But, Erwins family says the signs were removed prior to his hike.
At any rate, Erwin hiked to the exact spot where the bear was nearly fully recovered from the tranquilizer. The researchers had left the area approximately thirty minutes before, as the bear began to wake up. It is assumed that Erwin walked within threatening distance of the bear, and it responded to him as a perceived threat. It killed him in a violent attack that quickly took his life. He did not suffer, nor was any part of him eaten by the bear.
When Erwin didn’t return at his scheduled time, Yolanda called Chad Dickinson, a member of the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team. He headed up to the trap site and found Erwins' remains in a remote point in the trail about two miles from the nearest road. The effort to recover his body finished up around one AM.
Video #3 Excerpt- As Ben rounded the hill, he carefully navigated the slope and stayed out of brushy areas so as not to surprise any bear or moose. As he emerged into a large clearing Ben pulled up his binoculars to glass the area. His field of view was quickly filled with a large, brown fuzzy image. Whatever it was, it was so close his binoculars couldn’t focus on it. He quickly took his binoculars from his eyes and felt his heart drop as he could see a large brown bear just a hundred or so feet from him.
The bear immediately stood up his hind legs, lifting his head above the brush and began to investigate just what Ben was. It opened and closed its mouth a few times and bobbed up and down, seemingly unsure of just what to do with this person appearing so close, so suddenly.
It apparently made up its mind, as it disappeared once again into the brush and got back down on all fours.
Ben had studied how to behave around bears, as he was an avid outdoorsman. He knew if he didn’t do anything drastic, like screaming or running, the bear may well just amble away. He stood still and focused on relaxing in a desperate hope to somehow convey a nonthreatening attitude toward the bear.
Suddenly the brush exploded with snapping branches and cracking as Ben watched a brown blur streaking toward him. At his side Ben carried a .357 Magnum pistol, a single action revolver. By the time he could pull the gun and cock the hammer, the bear was within arms length of him. He frantically squeezed the trigger and felt his hand kick in reaction to the shot. The bullet hit the bear square in the chest, but it didn’t stop, or even acknowledge the impact of the bullet.
As the bear ran past Ben, it clasped its jaws on his right leg and slung him over its shoulder. It then flung him backward, sending him crashing onto a large rock. Just as Ben felt himself land, he also felt the bear biting into his right leg. It hadn’t even missed a step in the entire process of throwing him and was now tearing at the muscle and skin of his right leg..

I wear a .357 Mag alternating with a 10mm auto as my hunting sidearms. Carried a .44 Mag for years but I live in the deep southeast where we may encounter a black bear on occasion and the 10mm loaded “high, hot and a helluva lot” (Buffalo Bore hard cast loaded hot in a 15 round handgun magazine). We don’t have gun bans, magazine bans, load limitations, etc.
My comments for the first two stories have disappeared so I’ll leave them be. My only comment I’ll make for the third story is .357 Mag but with a SA revolver? I woulda carried a large caliber DOUBLE action revolver or a 15+1 autopistol in 10mm. I read a lot of bear attack stories where the person was carrying a sizable caliber but single action pistol and shoot at the bear while running away from the bear but still thumbing the hammer of the SA and shooting over their shoulder while running backwards from the bear.

@@slypperyfox top shelf choice you have, 10mm is the sweet spot imo...more power than the 9 even hot BB outdoorsman, not a 44 at all but big and heavy enough to stop a damn griz.
However so isn't the 9 with BB, even the Xtreme penetrator are on record not only stopping yet killing bears too. The 9 is easier for follow up shots more accurate is my deciding factor, but again your 10m is the same as I do plan for some day man it truely is the perfect woods carry. Especially where you are idk how big they get but up here they're normally 550-650 easily even up in the mountains. I blame city boy campers and irresponsible homeowners over feeding them with trash/unsecured food sources pure and simple as a 650lb bear is a massive animal with zero fear of even German shepherds, Man or fire crackers, bear spray or a proper pistola is necessary.
Idk if youve ever seen a 650lb male black Bear as myself, I hope not for your sake as they're so incredibly massive without natural fear we all must be very careful of them, as it's the solitary males which are far more dangerous than the mother with cubs. Obviously if you endangered her cubs she's coming for you but short of that she does all she can to steer clear of you and everyone else

My philosophy is that if a bear or any wild animal even looks like it might attack, I'll shoot it until it's dead. I'm partially disabled so I physically can't run and have lost a lot of my strength over the years. My only option is to face any potential threat head on. That's why I'll shoot first and ask questions later. I am also Always armed, even in the house. If I go outside I just switch to a larger, more powerful caliber. Friend last summer emptied his 500 mag into a small charging Grizzly. Last shot almost point blank broke it's spine as the bears momentum knocked him over. He switched to a 10mm he can handle & get that ONLY bear stopping brain shot. Bears have slow heartbeats & even with big holes in them can still kill you before they die. He dumped every cylinder & it still wasn't enough. Not a head shot in the bunch. Most EXPERIENCED folks here in Alaska are switching to the 10mm..1 shot that counts is better than 5 that don't. I blew a hole clean through a small grizzly at 10 feet W a 375 H&H. Totally severing it's spine right behind its head. THAT wasn't enough either. Ask what most the outfitters are carrying in Alaska, etc now days.. Not .44's, .454's,. 500 Mags either.. 10MM.. The Amount of hate you can lay down on a charging animal is far more than 5 rounds of high recoil revolver rounds.. IF you are a serious shooter who has been in combat, you can definitely KO a bear with a single round.. You can also do the same with a 10mm.. IF it takes two shots.. I'll have already dropped 5 at the same time..

I wouldn’t go into Brown Bear / Black Bear territory without a chest holstered .44 Magnum and a hip holstered FNX .45 ACP with a capacity of 16 rounds and one or two cans of bear spray!!! If I were hunting, my rifle would be in my hand and every firearm I carry would have one in the chamber, safety on.
Plus, if you’re just hiking, take a dog or two with you. If you’re hunting, I’d seriously consider renting horses or going with someone who uses horses!!!!
Horses are a great warning system, just like a dog!!!!
I would suggest Never Ever Ever leave or separate from your hunting partner who is skinning and butchering your kill!!!! Especially when it has been left overnight and predators have had a chance to know where that free meal is located, even if they haven’t shown up yet!!!! A bear knows where your kill is located from 5 miles away once the scent hits it’s nose!!!!
ALWAYS DROP TO ONE KNEE TO FIRE LEVEL AT A CHARGING BEAR!!!! If you shoot from a standing position, you’ll shoot over its back and hit where you aimed when you pulled the trigger. The bear won’t be there. It will be about 20 feet closer to you when the bullet gets there!!!!
I am so sorry for anyone who has ever been attacked by a bear!!!!

The story of the reseachers is an interesting one but also, at least for me, a very logical one. No bears don't hold grudges, but this poor male bear was recovering from anesthesia, feeling not 100% well, remembered the smell of human and 1+1 =2. Irvin was stubborn as he as warned by his friend to NOT go into the woods for several weeks. But Irvin went straight for that spot out of curiousity (as was mentioned also in your story) the bear reacted pure defensively in fear. It is extremely sad he was shot, as he was NOT a man eater. The wife suing for millions....we Europeans will never understand that. Suing for changes yes, we do that. But will bring those millions her husband back? Sad story too. Poor man, he ignored advise and was too comfortable with bears.
Especially mountain bears (who mostly live from berries, 80% of their dieet) and are known to be more agressive than bears in Alaska / Kodiak per example, are no joke. You can't allow yourself to feel too comfortable in bearcountry. Especially not in Montana, where bears can not migrate. They are locked up in a big reservate and can't connect with bears in Oregorn and especially Washington state and British colombia. They totally cut off, which is a problem. Honestly....the USA should work on a solution to make it possible for bears in Montana to migrate to other bear states in the North and visa versa. There are several wel known biologists working on this plan, but I doubt it will ever go threw. They boxed these bears in...very unnatural.

The next day you will be heading back to a carcass, claimed by a bear. 100% Hunting in Ohio is not the same as in Alaska. I do agree with you that Alaska is one os the most pristine real wild places on earth...but honestly...there is nothing more wild, pristine and harsh than Siberia...where even wolves are prey for huge eagles and bears are everywhere. I drove for weeks without seeing a village. It's hard to explain how untouched and wild Siberia is.

The more of these I listen to the more I’m convinced, no matter the circumstances, there is absolutely never a time where someone should enter an area where bears can be without bear spray. Even with a firearm, should always have bear spray no matter what.

@@tedpappas8939 I definitely get where you are coming from, but it’s simply not true. A gun makes most people feel better but the vast majority of the time bear spray is far, far more effective. It’s been studied and proven many many times. It doesn’t matter how accurate someone is with a firearm, under that pressure, and with enough time to get only 1-3 shots off, there’s such a slim chance of hitting vitals. Bear spray create a cloud of pain for the bear. Distorts their vision and their ultra sensitive nose. Sorry man but there’s no comparison.
I don’t know if you hunt, but If you do think of how long it takes a buck to die. And under those circumstances we have so much time to get a perfect shot off. Plus we have the opportunity for surprise. And they still take off and run the majority of the time.

I can see where you are coming from, and perhaps having both a gun and spray as options is the best route. Certainly there are many instances of bear spray doing it’s job and deterring the bear. But there are loads of scenarios like in close counter ambushes, territorial attacks, and defense of cubs where spray was deployed in the bears face and did not stop the attack. Some because the bear had too much speed and momentum in its charge to keep it from reaching the person. There’s also many examples of spray being deployed in wind and either not reaching the bear or blowing back in the person’s face. Yes you can find instances where a gun either couldn’t be used in time, inadequate platform/power to dispatch the bear, or where they plain miss. But from the anecdotal evidence I’ve seen, a gun stands a better chance at saving one’s life should a bear reach someone and start mauling them. And there are far too many scenarios where bear spray just doesn’t fit the scenario (in a tent, against a full speed ambushing bear, against a bear that’s gotten to you and began its attack, in the wind, etc.)
I still think you should carry both because it certainly does have its advantages and circumstances that would prevent an attack where a gun might not (bluff charge, curious bear sizing you up, bear charging you out in the open). But push comes to shove, in that life or death split moment you mentally prepare for, I’d have a lot more trust in the right gun than a can of bear spray in my hands. But that’s just my opinion

Again take very good example of the speed of the bear well done for having a decent side arm, training a bit beforehand may have helped dispatch it quicker. All in all Ben kudos to you, the last shot is exactly what I was thinking during the story and exactly what I would have done. I would like to think that as I did it I would have done a Hollywood “ you want something to eat, eat this,” but I suspect I would have had a lot more important things to think about, you should be proud of yourself. The bear would not have survived gut shot turns into peritonitis and death and I doubt It could still eat but I bet you cleared his sinuses! Never take it personally, as with other animals they just do what they do.

Mississippi has the prefect habitat for bears and if they are protected their population will explode. Kinda scares me as I enjoy hiking. All I carry is a 9mm. I guess I better get something bigger.

Bear spray is great for a bear encounter. A gun is better for a bear attack. Irwin should of known better. Ignorance is not bliss and there are bear in 49 states and Canada. Three fifty seven mag is how most say the caliber.

I think you should always carry bear spray! Although, I’m also convinced that depending on the circumstances, it might not do any good. Always carry a weapon as well and never take it off your person, no matter what! I don’t live in bear country, but I do go to Wyoming and Montana on hiking trips. I never go alone, I’m always carrying, and I ALWAYS HEAD THE WARNING SIGNS! That all being said, I think he should’ve been doing all of those things as well, despite him having many encounters in the past. It’s better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it🤷🏻‍♀️. I wouldn’t have gone into the area for a few days once signs were removed and I think it’s a bit irresponsible as well. Now that bear is dead. I think that the bear could’ve been a bit disoriented still from the drugs and if they can remember where food is, why couldn’t they remember the humans that were just there messing with them and associate him with the others? Either way, it’s tragic for all involved as well as the bear.

All these ambushes could have turned out better.
