    Welcome back to Scary Bear Attacks! Today’s episode takes us into very familiar territory. We are going to talk about another brown bear attack at Skilak Lake on the Kenai Peninsula in southern Alaska. At the juncture of Hidden Creek and Skilak Lake, there is a gravel campground that can be accessed by hiking trail, boat, or plane and allows visitors to rest on the banks of Hidden Creek. The area around the creek and the trail that follows it is a broad valley covered in dense alder brush and spruce stands. The cover here is low growing which creates an impenetrable visual screen that shelters bears and allows them to stalk prey.
    The creeks that feed into Skilak Lake provide the salmon access to breeding and rearing grounds. Their bodies provide important nutrients for bears and many other animals. They are so essential to bears that they have been known to defend their fishing grounds to the death, from other bears and possibly humans.
    On Friday, June 11th, 2021, a couple we will refer to as Jennifer and Jake had planned a romantic camping trip together. Jake and Jennifer drove to the parking lot at the Upper Skilak Lake Campground and packed their supplies into their kayaks. They brought with them a very thorough first aid kit, bear spray, and an air horn. The campers packed their gear in the storage hatch of their kayaks stuffed to the brim with sleeping bags, tents, and other necessities.
    When ready to launch their kayaks, they boarded their crafts and paddled into the cold waters. As they paddled along the shore of Skilak Lake the beautiful scenery mesmerized them. The six-mile journey to Hidden Creek took a few hours in the afternoon, and upon arrival, they were eager to get ashore to set up camp.
    After arriving at Hidden Creek the couple beached their kayaks and began offloading their gear. They packed it a short distance to the established campground and began laying out their tent. The campers had plenty of time to finish setting up their camp just before starting dinner to enjoy the solitude and peace of the lake.
    As the shadows grew long Jake and Jennifer decided to call it a night. They crawled into their sleeping bags and the silence granted quick slumber to them. As they slept, a huge brown bear had been searching the creek bank for anything to eat. Finding regular sources of food is extremely important to bears, and this one was in a very aggressive mood as it needed the food here.
    Right around midnight, Jake was shaken awake by Jennifer. She woke him because she had heard something moving very near the outside of their tent. As Jake came to his senses he groped around their tent, searching for the bear spray they had brought with them. They decided they should look outside the tent door and see what it was that was creeping around them.
    Just as they peered out of a crack in their tent flap, they could see a huge round bear head come into their view, and it was growing quickly. They realized the bear was charging toward them, and they had nowhere to go. As they retreated from the open tent flap they could feel the overwhelming power of the bear slam into them and press them to the cool ground beneath the tent fabric.
    The tent material acted as a trap to them and held them in place for the bear as it took turns attacking Jake, and then Jennifer and Jake once again. Given it was dark, and the campers were covered in tent fabric the bear had no idea what part of its victims it was clawing or biting. But, it didn’t matter as whatever it could get into its mouth was bitten and whatever it could strike with its claws was tattered.
    The darkness of the night and the added obstruction of the tent complicated any retreat the campers would try to make. The brown bear was attacking them for a matter of only a few seconds, but it seemed like much longer. By the time the bear left their tent, Jake had severe puncture wounds on his legs and arms. Some of his wounds went so deep into his muscle tissue that his legs were not completely functional. Jennifer was somehow less battered but had several gashes and punctures in her legs and arms as well. Even though the tent completely obscured the camper’s vision, it protected them as well, by limiting the bear's attack.
    As the campers were still terrified within their collapsed tent, they knew they would have to leave it to get help and risk running into the bear once again. For all they knew the massive bruin may have laid down nearby for a rest and could be watching them right now. Determining that they had no other choice, they grabbed a few supplies and began making their way back to their kayaks beached on the shore.

    Kevlar sleeping bags and tents are a start. Compact concertina wire with high volt electric fence shocker. Remote fired packs of firecrackers or trip wire with shotshell blanks. Motion activated lights.
    There's a variety of stuff normally used for household purposes, but can be adapted to tent site security.
    I always have a sling bag with small trauma kit of Israeli bandages, gauze pads, variety of blood clotting products and different styles of tourniquets as the major pieces. If you are on a blood thinner, as I am, then stopping blood loss ASAP is highest priority. Best priority would be discouraging an attack. Like a powerful gun and bear spray its best to have it and not need it, than the reverse. Kind of like extra batteries for flashlights (GOOD quality flashlights).
    You can put together a surprisingly good trauma kit that's compact and 2 lbs or less. Each person should have their own kit on them. It won't do much good to survive an attack if you die from untreated injuries before getting to an ER/OR.

    I have to wonder if they were storing food inside the tent? Strange behavior for a bear to rush a tent like that without provocation. It didn't try to drag either of them off to be consumed so I doubt it was a predatory attack, and it's not like they surprised the bear. Bears are all about finding food, and that's usually their motivation. The couple may have been sleeping in the same clothes they cooked in. A common mistake people make when camping in grizzly country. The scent gets trapped in the clothing and permeates the tent during the night.

      I came up with the same theory. Either they had food inside the tent or had the clothes inside the tent that they had on when they cooked. Big mistake. I would even go as far as pulling ashore at one spot to cook, then kayaking to a different location to setup camp for the night. But that's just me.

    Might help to make tents out of Kevlar fiber so the bears claws and teeth couldn't puncture through of the people were wrapped up in the tent. Now the bear might still crush some bones, but shouldn't puncture any vitals. Thoughts guys?

      @_smurfitude 6 месяцев назад +1

      If a bear wanna kill, it will, but perhaps Kevlar is better than nothing at all. Question though: Kevlar might be too hot in spring/summer? If it's that dangerous there, I'd opt for a safer campground. Stay out of Yellowstone, Alaska, Montana, certain spots in California, Pennsylvania, anywhere bears are numerous.

    Alaska looks so picturesque, I'd love to visit there someday. I don't think I'd camp there though. I'll stay in a town, where the bears are much less likely to wander into. That goes for anywhere in bear country. I think this had to be a predatory attack. The fact that the bear was attracted to their tent probably means it smelled them and wanted to investigate a possible food source. I think a defensive attack would be when they encountered the bear by accident. I'm glad they survived, and hope they made a full recovery.

    I think the tent covering them helped to confuse the bear as to their potential threat to it. They were probably not welcomed at the feeding site but as their potential danger to the bear was not apparent to it, it expressed its anger and hit the road weirded out by the tents expression to its attack. Possibly if the bear had uncovered the humans the outcome could have escalated to their detriment. Depending on how conditioned the bear was to humans in their environment. Either way they definitely managed an outstanding recovery from a bear on the tent experience. As singing ‘go away bears’ doesn’t work so well I’ll avoid staying near them. I love their surroundings but require more secure environs.

      I was still out of it! I am so sorry for the late reply! I'm not having a great day. Was concerned about getting sicker, so my arm's kinda sore from 2 vaccinations, and Monday or Tuesday, I'm getting the RSV. I totally get it with many who are leery about the vaxx, but I've personally been close to those who: At worse, now deceased or, at best, gotten very ill! Before Covid,I was still driving big truck. Flagstaff, AZ. was under quarantine. I stopped on the Western side, and rented a room. I caught the flu, and it got in my chest! It was pretty bad! I'm a diabetic, and this happens. So, my caregiver drove me to this small drugstore. They came out, and administered a booster, and the flu shot. My arm's a bit sore, and I've been sleepy; that's it! I think now, it itches around the injection site, and slightly red. Better than getting full blown JN1, flu or RSV. It keeps mutating! To be honest, I've learned that there's stuff from Charleston, S.C, the N.C, and Chesapeake Bay, that's killing fish! It's a microorganism that's vampire like, no joke! And, they found out it's from cattle crap! These huge farms' runoff has gotten into the water off the Atlantic seaboard! It started in the 90's! And today, it still occurs! This is a bit off topic, but if anyone reads this, understand that there's stuff that's more deadly than a bear. You can't see it, but it's predacious nature is just as bad, or worse! My caregiver's from D.C. She was really sick on Friday, I wonder if that seafood or the water affected her! Friday, she looked pretty sick, but she told me she had Crones', IDK...I'm seeing more about this earth & people. Kinda wish I saw it sooner! A member called me weird further up. I haven't seen him much. I thought he was very immature, actually. Anything that impedes your quality of life is worth a discussion, especially what Addicus narrates. Animal rights groups, and increased population is the reason for these attacks, and, complacency plus not being prepared for coming to their habitat. So, ideas to keep one safe, I'm open to! I had never heard of quick clot. I am going to get some. I don't plan on going camping but I have kids and animals and even at home you never know what might happen.

    Happy New Year Addicus & the Scary Bear Attacks Family! It's so unfortunate that they were attacked! I believe that they really didn't that much about an attack occurring, but sadly it did. Mello, I saw your part of you comment as I was writing. I noticed too he had Quick Clot gauze, Atticus' narration explained to us how it's used. The guy was injured worse but happily no deaths were reported out of the incident. Despite they had bear spray, the attack was while they were sleeping. The tent and sleeping bags saved them as well as their bravery to get back to the kayak. I hope by now the couple are doing well and have recovered mentally as well as physically. If you talk to anyone who has been attacked by a bear they'd say that they never have had an encounter at all with one, but in bear country, we run the risk. Conservationists have lobbied for their protection therefore it will be human casualties. All we can do is not travel alone and pack ammo as well as bear spray. Or don't go to places so remote! Do what you can to keep from becoming a bear's dinner! In 2024, may all of you have a safe, happy & healthy 2024. Sorry I missed you all. I've been trying on my own to straighten myself up. My caregiver's been trying to push me in the right direction. My household has suffered casualties down to pieces of my sheet sets being pilfered! Who would steal a pillowcase? I'm not suffering from any brain disorder that I'll do such a thing! Well, I've had some weirdos in my home since her. One stole my nail clippers🤣🤣 That's nasty. Just leaving a bit of reasons why I'm not catching you all much, but hopefully, 2024 won't be too bad. I hope to have better things to say. I did mention about my new caregiver. Well in addition, we got my eyes examined, and attempted to start dental work too, so I'm getting out more, which is awesome! It's always positives in there. I believe that some of you may be concerned, Atticus said well wishes so did many of you. For all of us on this road called life, we look for good to cancel out the bad, and just like some who unfortunately are meeting their demise in bear attacks, it reminds us of our own mortality. Some of you I've talked to that live in these areas. Some made me feel better that pack firepower, one gentleman fight off wolves and he packs! Do all you can! Anyone new who read these comments should leave with a deeper understanding of wildlife! These aren't Yogi and Boo-Boo! Some are sows with cubs and the males will go hunting, FOR YOU. Be careful in 2024. See you all there!

    Defending the area seems the most logical reason for the attack or else that bear was just a psycho! What a dreadful way to wake up! Seems like being in the tent helped save their lives though.

    I've always heard that if it's a brown/grizzly bear attacks you at night its intent is predatory. And, the advice was fight or die. 😳

  • @arthurzengeler8296

    I think they should have camped with the campers that helped them. But since they went on their own, they should have first sounded the horn, when they heard something walking around. They should have had the bear spray, ready to be used, not looking around the tent for it. And where did they keep their food ? Lastly, kayak are not a good boat to use in that freezing water. If some mishap occurred, they could die from hyperthermia, if they fall in.

    Bears might look cute but don't be fooled by they're cuteness they're still dangerous animals you can take an animal out of the wild but you cannot take the wild out of it 😅😅😅😅

    Fascinating! This area is proving to be very dangerous for hikers and hunters. I wonder if any steps will be taken to reduce the bear/human ratio. If not, explicit warnings should be posted and hunters and other visitors made aware of the dangers they may face. I don’t know what caused the bear to retreat because it seemed to be so focused on them. Maybe the tent confused the bear….not being able to see clearly what it was after. No clue. They were so lucky, and well prepared as well. Quick clot has been used in the military for a long time and is life saving. Comes in a powder too.

    We used to go to Yellowstone NP backing the 70's to canoe across Lewis Lake pull the canoe up the river and end up at Shoshone Lake as soon as the ice melted on Lewis Lake. The grizzly bears were coming out of hibernation and were very hungry. We were there to fish so any fishing gear we had attracted bears from miles around. The bears would come into our campsite at night and take a big sniff through our tent fabric. I was terrified but my camping partner who was an avid outdoorsman and hunter would be snoring away. We carried firearms for protection, sorry park service but, I was still terrified. I would hold the muzzle of my riot shotgun right where the bear was pushing against the tent in case the bear decided to explore the inside of our tent. Thank God none of the bears decided we were a food source. We even removed any clothes we wore when eating and hung them up with the food. The bears would even get into our canoe and lick where we had placed the fish we were catching. I knew when a bear was coming into camp when all of the normal night noises stopped. I have been chasing Grizzly bears ever since and they are the most amazing animals. We use electric fences now, to protect our camp but, I always carry a firearm if it is legal to do so.

    Do you remember Timothy Treadwell? This senario sounds very familiar to what happened to them. What do you think?

    • @_smurfitude
      @_smurfitude 7 месяцев назад

      Not exactly. Treadwell was a fool that kept pushing the envelope. These two got out alive; it was a brief attack. Treadwell and his gf ended up on bear's menu. That bear was hungry, and it was about to get cold enough for the bear to go in hibernation. What was left of Treadwell and the gf showed in the necropsis that was left proved that idiot contributed to the bear's feeding schedule, but of course they found the bear in Treadwell's case and deemed the attack predatory. In this story, they weren't dragged off and eaten.
