Welcome back to Scary Bear Attacks! Today’s episode takes us to the Tsiu River and its delta in southeast Alaska. This area is nearly sea level and consists of sand and gravel bars split by fingers of the Tsiu River as it makes its way into the Gulf of Alaska. As it braids into different streams it creates several avenues for fishermen to pitch lures and tempt hungry salmon making their way up the waterway. As the subjects of our episode found out, it isn’t only fishermen who stalk the brush and swales.
In the months before August 1986, Bob and Marietta Herron were organizing a salmon fishing trip along the Tsiu River, Alaska. They pitched the idea to their friend, Bill Myers, and he decided to tag along. By August, their plans for a salmon fishing trip into the Alaskan wilds were transforming into reality.
As the fishing trip approached, Bob had inquired of the outfitter, Brent, if they should bring firearms with them. Brent informed them that firearms are no good unless you know how to use them, so Bob and Marietta brought Bill along with them to the shooting range for practice. Bob and Marietta had purchased twin .357 magnum manufactured by Colt and Bill had opted for the .357 magnum by Smith and Wesson. All three pistols were revolvers and very powerful in form and function.
Brent, the outfitter agreed to set up all the necessary equipment, transportation, and rigging for the fishing expedition. Dates were set and arrangements were made to bring the three Los Angelinos to the land of the midnight sun. When the departure date arrived, they knew they would have no concerns about their trip. The food, shelter, and fishing gear were up there waiting for them.
After a series of flights and relaying flights, they eventually stepped from a small aircraft onto the sandbars along the Tsiu River Delta and the promise of pure salmon fishing bliss it offered.
Bob and Marietta glanced around the delta, took in the cool clean air, and stared at the forested rise just above their camp. The Gulf of Alaska lapped upon the shore as the camp assistant Brenda erected the wall tents. The tents were canvas fabric placed over a plywood floor and walls. There were four tents up and Bob, Marietta, and Bill chose theirs and deposited their belongings inside.
Soon a young man, probably around his mid-twenties walked up and introduced himself. He announced to the group that he would be their guide for their fishing trip and introduced himself as Randy. By his side was his wife and the camp cook, Betty.
Back in the big city, the three friends relied on professionals for everything. If your electrical system had some problems, you called an electrician. If there were potholes in the road, the city maintenance department would come out and fill it. At the fishing camp they quickly learned that if there was something that needed to be done, they needed to do it. They gathered the wood for a campfire and rolled logs near it to sit on.
Soon, another couple emerged from one of the wall tents. They introduced themselves as Paul and Leico Whitestone. Paul was a mellow guy and Leico was an energetic balance to her partner. He had brought along a single action .44 magnum and a .38 caliber pistol, just for reassurance.
Not wanting to waste time, each person grabbed a pole and headed toward the winding series of fingers the river splits into just behind their camp. The fishing was exciting and productive. The group pulled in six big and beautiful silver salmon by late afternoon. Randy gathered the fish and cleaned them. He placed each of the fish into a single plastic bag and used rocks to submerge it in the creek only ten feet behind Bob’s and his tentmate's wall tent.
After some quality time around the campfire, with their bellies full, the fishing party all headed for their bunks and some sleep. They planned for an early and long day fishing, so rest would be important for them.
At about 4 AM the entire camp was awakened by an increasingly shrill scream of “Bear!, Bear! BEAR!” from the camp cook, Betty. Everyone quickly stumbled from their tents, flashlights searching the darkness. Bob asked Betty what had happened, and she explained that she had heard a crash outside of her tent. When she shined her flashlight she watched as a gigantic brown bear dashed into the bushes on the edge of the camp.

This was definitely a predatory attack. I think the big brown bear was looking to make a snack out of at least one of the people at the camp. It's never a good sign when the same bear continues to come around.

The bear was curious, fearless and a huge danger to the camp. Im guessing he was a young male who wanted to try some human but was just a tiny bit rattled by the gunshots. The shot that killed it was lucky.
How a guide in the Alaskan wild doesn't know he needs to take care of his rifle is beyond me. We are talking about the most dangerous wilds left in North America, featuring the most terrifying mammal known to man.

I think the bear was definitely casing out his prey. Exactly what most predators do, watch for hours or days and see what they're up against. I believe you said that Randy, the guide, was frustrated at the fishing party because they were scared and not ready to kill the bear. I would have been super upset that my guide, in bear country, hadn't kept up his firearm properly. That's a fatal mistake in bear country.
I think the 357 is enough with the right shots, but 8nwoild want more than a 6 shot revolver. That's why most people carry the 10mm Glock as you have 16 shots per magazine that have the power of the 357 Magnum. If that doesn't do it, you're dead.

Canvas wall tents pitched on the Tsiu River bank during the height of the salmon run, for nimrods from L.A. What a terrific…no, wait…I mean terrible idea!
The disconnect between people who live on the edge of wild areas and those reliant upon big city amenities is as across a century of time. This episode illustrates that perfectly.

I think it was mostly territorial. The bear probably considered them competing for fish at what had been the bears fishing grounds. How ever the bear probably considered them prey too. They should have put there fish and all their food in smell proof containers in trees along way from camp.

Camping in bear territory in a canvas tent is like swimming with sharks in a wetsuit. Both are useless if the predator decides to attack. I was in a cabin in bear territory and in a shark cage when I swam with sharks, none of that other foolishness.

  • @evryhndlestakn
    @evryhndlestakn 8 месяцев назад +6

Its hard to say it was a predatory attack when it's been all but lured in. It's scented, followed it's nose & had value for the effort with a free meal. That bear certainly became an opportunist if anything.
I think it showed common sense by Marietta to suggest a bear watch considering it had already been in camp & it had been rewarded for coming in. However, if there is an agreement to set a watch then I would be p*ssed off to wake up & find no one on watch (as long as I wasn't the one scheduled!) because each in turn is meant to be the eyes & ears & an early warning for the many. The whole idea is early warning with the bulk of the camp mates getting as much rest as is possible. If you cant keep your watch you better say when the watches are being set then if there's a need for some double watches at least its known before someones asleep, no ones watching & an attack occurs. Its a bit late then & if a person would feel a little ashamed not pulling a bear watch its a damn site more comfortable than the person that slept on a watch & an attack victim, sleeping with a feeling of security, would feel after an attack & honestly, if that was made clear & someone slept on watch, attack or not, they would deserve an ass kicking.
But what the heck was with Randy? He bags the fish & submerges them in the river, sure, but right nearby the back of his clients tent, & obviously not so well the bear couldnt locate them. He feels its a little unneccesary to set a watch yet the bear has already come into the camp, been rewarded for its effort & at the minimum there was a 50/50 chance it would return so some pre-warning wasnt going to hurt anybody but setting no watch just might. Then Randy feels the bear didnt pose a threat at the time. Every predator poses a threat by its very nature & the vicinity of the predator absolutely made it a potential threat. A very real threat, even if it wasnt hunting the campers as such, if the bear felt there was an easy meal to be had & any of these people were an impediment to its meal then they were absolutely facing a very real risk of injury or death. So if Randy's casual attitude wasnt dangerous enough, in a hindsight's great kind of way, then the fact the weapon he carried wasnt cleaned is shocking. Until it could be cleaned through it was nothing more than an overly heavy stick & less effective than that. It was clear that Randy was skilled in the wild....just enough to be dangerous.
Finally, I wish that old fisherman would have been around, inbetween & to the side of ol' Bob & the bear with the same outcome as had happened. There would have been a good chance the scat around the place may not have been only from a bear,...there would have been a good chance that with a couple of sniffs in the locale, some of that was "wise old fisherman" scat.

This brown bear was stalking the group in a predatory manner. They were camped in an area where it was likely that there would be a bear encounter. Beautiful salmon was in that river. Unfortunately, the bear didn't leave them alone. Because the bear kept coming around their camp, the camper's trip wasn't fun anymore, and they were informed that their 357 magnums weren't adequate for protecting from the bear, but the camp, seeing the Northern lights and the great fishing made that campsite a great spot, but the bear ruined the ambience. This turned the trip into a bear hunt because the bear was stalking them. Thankfully, none of the campers were hurt or killed, because they killed the bear. Addicus, you mentioned that they spotted another bear if so, there may be a part 2? Yes, they made some mistakes, one was the closeness to camp that those fresh caught salmon were. It's funny how some people aren't aware of the problems they can cause by leaving food scraps and other food out that will only attract wildlife of all kind and then later they wind up killing something that was doing what its DNA was hardwired to do: Eat then hibernate, also if it's a bruin, find female in estrus and mate with her. I'm only giving my view of the story. At the end I was relieved to hear that the campers weren't hurt, but I'm still wondering: Did some of the campers leave with the supply plane that landed after the bear's demise, and what about the other bear sighting? This story left big questions about what else happened out there, in Alaska, in an area that's a bear's food source also. If one wants to enjoy what comes out the river, in Alaska, understand that bears are out there too, finally be ready to defend yourselves. One of them had a rifle that was inoperable. Someone could've gotten savagely mauled or killed. 🐻🐻 Roaaar!!!!!🐻🐻😊

Definitely a predatory attack, if it was territorial then the bear would have charged directly into camp and mauled the intruders. It was instead casing the area, testing their resolve and trying to figure out a plan of attack; either way, there’s a reason our Stone Age ancestors hunted many other large, dangerous predators to extinction

The bear snagged some salmon on night one. I think it makes sense that he was looking for a refill the rest of the time. I don't think he wanted people. He could get the salmon those folks left laying around and he could easily catch his own salmon too. So I don't think he was preying on them for people meat. I think he knew they'd have salmon and other foods so why not get it? It's the reasonable thing for a bear to do. And I think dropping yourself right into a bear's feeding grounds is a very stupid thing to do, guide or not.

If the insight of the people involved was as superb as their eyesight, being able to see the bear at night over 100m away, the problem wouldn't have happened. Brer bear probably would have headed for Russia to avoid the supernatural powers.
Not having a radio would probably be an issue for those guiding for hire or reward. Basic safety of clients, read the signs, Don't Feed the bears

I bet they don't go back without a more powerfuI, functioning rifle.
I think those people would've been in deep trouble, had there not been a group of them and had they not had all the firearms. The bear either wanted their food or wanted them gone.
It was too persistent to just be curious, and I don't think they had a choice about shooting it.
I'm sure someone told them at some point afterwards, the foolishness of keeping their fish so close to their tents, idk why the outfitter was so blasé and didn't educate them better about safe food storage in bear country. I wouldn't pay him again because he didn't seem to be too concerned about what they were experiencing. Or too interested in ensuring their safety. Isn't the outfitter supposed to be the experienced guide ? Aren't they paying him to guide them ?
Definitely a scary and weird story. I know there are better outfitters in AIaska.

I don't know how many times I've heard the nonsense about, or similar to, the idiotic 357 comment. Bullet choice is paramount. Well, along with hitting the target, of course. The vast majority of incidents involving bear defense with handguns are successful.

  • @bcallahan3806
    @bcallahan3806 8 месяцев назад +1

To bring a ( inoperative) neglected rifle is negligent at best.
Sadly this incident isn't an isolated scenario.
It occurs more often than people admit.
    As far as Calibers go.
There are plenty of articles that span decades including people who actually hunt both brown/grizzly, Kodiak as well as black bear with handguns.
Although 357 and even 44 mag are quite powerful.
There are some variables that make huge differences.
Number one is accuracy, number two is selection of ammunition.
As mentioned in the video one round of 357 never penetrated the shoulder.
    Perhaps wrong ammunition?
    Same with a 44mag.
Most common load was 240 grain jacketed hollow point.
Previous articles over years say not the best load. A 300 grain solid has much greater penetrating capabilities.
I'm sure 357 has better loads than what was used by people in this situation.
Although people may say 357 was more than capable enough to down bear.
    Let's look at facts.
    How many rounds fired?
    How many hit?
Only one that was lethal and even then didn't drop the bear.
Also look at distance and where lethal shot hit.
Several yards off and a broadside shot.
Not a target you will get on a charging bear that is considerably closer coming on at full speed.
    ( check out other encounters)
It's going to be head on,
Meaning you want best penetrating power that packs a punch.
You can kill a moose or bear with a 22 caliber.
Right ammo and well placed shot.
Bear even elephant been hunted by bow and arrow, spears for thousands of years.
A better scenario would have possibly been, guide had a functional rifle, and brought along a shotgun with rubber bullets.
    Better camp storage of food.
Again fall and spring are are when bears get "Hangry".
    Plus sows with cubs.
    A dangerous combo.
Plus training for both people and bears.
You don't set up a restaurant in the middle bear country and expect not to see critters looking to get served!
Canadian Jays, Crows, fox, coyote, wolves rodents, bears, etc.
This group survived because they went on the offensive.
Had they allowed bear to approach closer, have no doubt there would have been human injury or fatalities.
Guide has some explaining to do.
Guide service needs to rethink their approach.
Again, with the bears initial interest, then repeated returns.
Rubber bullets could have trained him or her to reckonize not a food source.

I think it should be expected for a bear to return to a camp where it found food, smelled human scents and BBQ residue the night before. And by spotting him so many times Im sure he was around mire than they saw. He was stalking them.
As for Randy he has no business calling himself a guide. What a joke. And what abiut the outfitter not giving any valuuable advice or even suggest they may want to retreat back to civilization. I wonder how many times that camp area was used for other campers.

Randy was a moron, and yes, he knew it was inoperable
Any food within ten yards of you is idiotic in bear country
When Brent said, "you may have to put down that bear," with no further comments to the group or Randy.
Brent should lose his license for not putting an experienced fishing guide with the group.

Randy was killin me, but not killin any bear, that's for sure. He should at least keep his gun in operable condition out there!!!
I think the bear associated the camp with food, and it then became a dangerous situation for the campers, as the bear was absolutely going to return for food & possibly get more aggressive with the campers.
They really should have stored their fish/food better, and further away from camp, the situation probably could have been avoided.

They don’t think like we do to them. We just prey not humans!!!!! The bear knows that they there answer the bear you prey it’s common sense!!! They give all this teaching hard to avoid bears or make noise to alert them that you there that’s not smart at all! And then even allowing the bear to get within 15 yards when you can make the shot for much further than that makes no sense when the bow warning shot. Let a bear get that close you asking to get mauled or ate!!!
