BEAR COUNTRY Camping ALONE in a BEAR TENT

  • I love looking for new places to camp. In this video, I go deep into bear country for an overnighter in my bear tent with an electric bear fence. Luckily I wasn't eaten. This is called a bear tent by RBM Outdoors. It's just a name. No magic bear proof materials.
    The jaylegere discount code is discontinued.

    How much experience do I have?
    That depends. I am pretty good at starting a fire these days and gathering wood. But I don't really have true bushcraft skills and definitely no carpentry or construction skills or training. I could probably make a shelter if I had to, but that would just come from all the RUclips training (watching) over the years.

    Good gawd almighty. Backpackers spend every night of the summer in a tiny tent in Glacier National Park, surrounded by grizzlies, and don’t get et.

    You can easily tell the difference between black bear scat and grizzly bear scat. Black bear scat has berries and sticks and the like in it and grizzly scat has bits of flannel and smells like pepper spray

    I’ve been camping in bear country here in Wyoming numerous times, even with a shotgun and bear spray I’m still very cautious. Granted I’ve never used a bear fence so I never get the pleasure of eating at camp. Always have to walk off and eat in a random part of the woods, and hang all my shit in a tree.

      Ya, it's tough to get a meal completed when you know the bears are gonna show up at dusk!!!! Never had the pleasure of an invisible bear fence, but I know from experience that urinating, or marking the area does not work----- A hungry bear knowing there's humans around, will wait till dark and use stealth to try and get your food----- We've heard bears walk by our tent at night, sniffing loudly, and have had a few come into our tent while we were out fishing--- Never leave anything edible in the tent-- That includes toothpaste!!!!

    I live in Glasgow Scotland, serious countryside and Lochs/lakes whatever you want to call them. I was going out one day with my air rifle, and came across this "thin wired fence" that had at its corner what looked like a Curling Stone (game played on ice by sliding marble stones closest to target circle, Canadians and Scottish folk will understand. So I gets ready to cross "this silly looking wee fence" Put hand bang right on top wire, never saw a bottom wire, so was a bit perplexed as to "why a one wire fence?" I soon found out. I placed my full hand on it and gripped it ready ro pull other leg over it when I suddenly got this sensation (if you don't know, never experienced this before, it's how I cross a fence, or obstacle) Couple of seconds in I'm getting this strange feeling in my arm that's holding wire. Next thing I'm on other side very sore and "waking up" Yes weird alright!?" I still don't realise qhats went on. So I get up, look at this wire fence, remember only the one wire and I think "did this metal wire have something to do with me waking up unglued ad ti what just or at somepoint had happened, I touch it again, this time with flat fingertips. That's when I realised it was an electrical fence was only, about waist height. So this te I o lying get a small dock, but I'm shocked to say the least. I was miles away from anything valuable and no cows in field, but the shock is not nice. Unconscious! Then to wonder and touch it warily a second time. Someone told me "Yeah they only give out 12 volts. I've been shocked by household sockets in Scotland and theyrev240 volts, but this fence and its allegedly small voltage, 12, I thought I was wrong g. How can home electricity blow you across the room, but these electrical fences sound likebnothing, but do some painful damage. Not long lasting, the fright lasts longer. Those pink and green labels aren't to attract a cow to check it out, it's ro show You where exactly your fence is. Ciws hear that electric buzz too, and have built in "stay away from that" Us? We're thick as two door planks and will try anything for a shortcut. Pardon the pun there, only just found it, quote a funny one, but u intended. See a one/two small wire fence, tread very carefully all round it, if you see the charger. Climb over without your skin touching. Easier said than done. I've encountered a few now, and see that at some stages in its length that it has rubber hand grips for us idiots not to get stuck or thrown on your backside by then. I'd never take one camping. A fishing line with some cans threaded through does same job..Noise? You'll hear it.

Possibly you should invest in a bug repelling tent instead of the bear one , or you could erect a smaller bug repellent tent inside a larger bear safe tent and go to bed dressed in your net hooded bug protection gear with your gun beside you in case the bears there are really clever and determined.

    Who the hell goes out to a lake, in bear country and not know the name of the lake? Doing research, looking at maps to know where to go to make your video. And then for emergencies, you have to know where you're at, to communicate with first responders, also letting someone know where you will be at...just incase you don't come back on time. These are simple must do's when dealing with bear country. Simple common sense things to do, for safety. At least the guy that was the focus of the documentary, Grizzly Guy (something like that), had people that knew where him and his girl friend was...and new they were late getting back to the world...they had been eaten by a bear.....In Alaska...

      If you have a good white pine to hang your food, or even in a food storage locker in Alaska, try to minimize the time you have food out, cooking time, and clean up afterwards--- Avoid wiping your hands on your pants, and keep them washed---- Bears want food, not us!!!

    Was it a false sense of security having the electric bear fence? You might want to get an electric fence tester to make sure you have it really working... for the ground wire the ground needs to have some moisture in it.... just don't pee on it to do that. lol

    • @jaylegere
      @jaylegere  2 года назад +2

      I don't have a tester. Good idea! Thanks for watching and commenting. Jay

      @davea1771 2 года назад +2

      @@jaylegere I'd check the user manual to see if there is a way to test operation without "doing it yourself". But, as a backup method, we used to touch the electric fence with a long piece of grass as kids. You can feel the 'shock' but it's not as bad as touching it with your hand. Wearing leather gloves can be a good idea too.
      Whatever you do, DO NOT grab the wire. Use the back of your hand instead if you have to touch it. The electric pulse will cause your muscles to contract (and tighten your fist), so be sure it doesn't close your hand tighter around the wire.

      Once the deer flies, horse flies, and black flies stop biting and harassing you, then, all you have to worry about are the clouds of mosquitos that will descend upon you at night!!!!!! That's why we do our wilderness trips in the early fall---- Less bugs, but more hungry bears!!!! Head netting is a must if you're on a summer trip, and while I hate to smear DEET on my body, some good jungle juice is mandatory-------

      Yeah, the ground is very important. I have a 3 lb portable electric bear fence similar to what's set up in the video and I know it is best set on dirt not gravel. There needs to be a minimum of 4000 volts to deter a bear. What he needs is an electric netting bear fence which can be used on any type of ground.

    Years back when I lived in the UK I used to use a UV lamp that had an electric shock cage around it to kill off annoying flying bugs like mosquitoes. You might be able to find something similar that you can either run off batteries or the Jackery? Mine was AC powered, but very low wattage. Not so fun to clean out, but worked like a charm.

    I am sincerely confused, and hope someone will help inform me: what on earth is a “bear tent”?? Isn’t that an oxymoron, since a bear can shatter a vehicle window, or rip the door off a cabin? What makes that tent stronger and safer than a vehicle or a dwelling? I am curious to know, thanks! (I tried to scroll through the comments for an answer, but I’m late to the party and there are several hundred.)

    • @thomasfoss9963
      @thomasfoss9963 2 года назад

      It's not!!!! Keeping your food secured at all times is the most important part of a trip--- Never leave any food in the tent-- Even toothpaste!! They love it!!! I've lived, camped, and backpacked in bear country most of my life, most problems will occur if you're careless with your food... You have to respect bears, and keep in mind, they require pounds of food per day---- They don't want you, they want your food!!!!!!
