Welcome back to Scary Bear Attacks! Today’s episode takes us to the area around mile marker 68 along the Denali Highway and the hunting territory around the Alpine Creek Lodge, in Alaska. The highway was constructed to connect the town of Paxson and Cantwell and run through well preserved tundra and primitive territory. Denali National Park is about 60 miles to the west as the crow flies and other than that, there isn’t much of anything but wilderness around. The Nelchina Public Use Area is about 25 miles to the southwest of our location in the Clearwater Mountains in The Hayes Range. The climate here is classified as a subarctic climate which means the winters are long, cold and snowy and summers are mild. According to UCLA’s research Boreal Forests and tundra dominate alongside an abundance of berry bushes. The usual Alaska cast of animals are found here including moose and caribou with the occasional Dall Sheep hiding amongst the crags. Predators include wolves, lynx, black bears and brown bears.
On April 15th, 2016, father and son, Bret and Glenn Bohn were ripping along on their snowmobiles up a hill in hopes of catching a giant brown bear as it emerged from its winter den. Bret was a 35 year old hunting guide and resided in Wasilla a few hours to the south. Glenn was an active 77 year old retiree from education and guiding and enjoyed anything outdoors, especially with his son.
Spring bear hunting tends to be controversial to people who don’t understand bear management. It can be viewed as unfair to the bears, given they are just waking from hibernation and may not be aware of what awaits them outside the confines of their dens. It is certainly not without its dangers as surprising a hungry brown bear isn’t the safest of pursuits.
The men had decided to take snowmobiles to aid in getting back to ben denning locations. The basic strategy was to glass snowbanks for tracks or den openings and wait for the bears inside to emerge. The weather was cooperating for the most part as the skies were clear and temperatures were manageable.
Bret knew that his father wouldn’t be able to go on many more hunting trips, and memories of prior hunting trips flashed through his mind as the men buzzed up slopes. Bret took his first caribou when he was 7 years old and his dad was right beside him the entire trip. This hunting trip would mean much more to both of the men than what they expected.
The Bohn’s were both very experienced woodsmen and trained in wilderness and emergency medicine. Bret had completed a medical program called Learn to Return, which relayed wilderness medical strategies. They had had a handful of tangles with various bears through the decades, but had always managed to avoid an attack somehow.
It wasn’t long before Bret spotted an opening in the snow about 24 miles into their ride. He could see bear tracks around the opening but none leading away from it. This typically means the bear is awake from its slumber but isn’t quite adjusted to the bright and stimulating surroundings outside of its den enough to venture out permanently.
Parking their machines a short distance away the men slowly approached the den opening and observed the evidence around it to confirm their suspicions. After several minutes of analysis Bret announced he had followed each of the bear's paths around the opening and it hadn’t left the snowbank, opting to return to its den.
Now the men knew they would need to find a place that gave them a good view of the area surrounding the den opening. They sneaked up to within 36 yards of the den entrance and set Glenn up with his gun loaded and ready.
Bret decided to sneak around to a vantage point above the den to view the tracks the bear had left. He managed to get within 10 yards of the opening and started looking at the tracks the bear had left before returning to the den for more rest. Bret’s observations were interrupted by his father yelling, “He’s coming out Bret!”
At first, Glenn was concerned that the bear may be headed toward his son. He fired a round from his rifle hoping to drop the bear before it could pose a threat to his son. Upon hearing Glenn’s cries to Bret, the bear made it certain just which one of the men had drawn its full attention. As the bear approached him, Glenn managed to get to his knees from his prone shooting position.
Bret watched as the enormous bear covered ground toward his father so quickly that its speed seemed surreal.

I guided bear hunters for over ten years on Kodiak and in the Brooks Range of Alaska so I know a little about bear behavior. in my humble opinion, these men were over confident in their ability to kill the bear and were way to close to the den. Think about this, the bear could certainly hear the men who were just a few feet from the den and probably smell them. This has irritated the bear and it will not slowly come out to look around. It will come out fast with combat in mind for sure. My advise to others, don't do this !

Sir. They were scouting for an upcoming hunt. The son went up to check the sign, and the father stayed on the snow machine. The son heard the bear huffing as it blasted straight out and down to his father. They were not hunting

In answer to your question about bear spray or a sidearm of suitable quality and caliber, I’ll take the firearm every time. I look at it like this: If the firearm doesn’t stop the bear, it seems likely that bear spray would not stop it either.

I can't even imagine for a second why Wayne chose to not get pain medication during surgery. I also find that very hard to believe.... I mean surgery to repair bones, arteries and muscle and no pain reliever?? I find that very hard to believe.

My guess would be that he was under anesthesia during surgery, and upon release from the hospital refused a prescription for pain pills to take home.

Yeah, that “refused pain meds during surgery” is simply 🐃💩!
Anesthesia and follow-up meds are a medical decision…the patient (or responsible party) signs waivers before the procedure. During recovery, after discharge from the hospital, the patient can do as he wishes.

If he did refuse, it was his choice and pain to deal with. For me, gimme everything I can get for that kind of pain.😂 No thanks to suffering. I've had 24 surgeries and know pain very well. I refuse to suffer if I don't have to.
For decades I was given pain pills I didn't metabolize well so they didn't do much for me. I had plenty of time to be well acquainted with pain.
Now that I know what works and have the paperwork to back it up, I get something that actually works. Then I can get up and walk and recover faster and get home faster. ❤

Agreed, but if the bear was close and running towards him, it was likely the quicker and easier choice he was most comfortable with, on a moving target. As well as having more rounds to fire faster at a lethal target.

I really felt sorry for Glenn and all he had to go through.
Thankfully, Brett took some excellent fire power. This goes to show, when any animal is worked up and the adrenalin is flowing, one or two shots may not be enough to put a dangerous critter down.
    Shot placement is critical.

Wow, Glenn's a giga-chad! As we say round here, the man is _nails._ (As in, 'hard as nails'!)
I'm guessing the cold climate helps in these kind of situations, where blood-loss is a potential cause of death. Glenn probably wouldn't have made it through a 24 mile pillion passenger journey, had the attack taken place on a hot summer's day in Yellowstone.
Impressive, level-headed work from Bret, too. Hope they're both doing well!

Greetings from Alaska. I've tramped around the Clearwater Mts and other locations along the Denali for over 45 yrs. Several yrs ago I made it to a a favorite lake not far from that attack. As I was about to make camp beside the glass calm lake all hell broke loose as a young bull moose exploded from the alders at the edge of camp>Right behind him was a grizzly bear> The moose hit the lake and swam toward the opposite shore maybe 500yds away and the bear disappeared back into the alders . After my near heart attack I racked the slide of my Mossberg 500 with an iron sighted 18" slug barrel and began calling for my 3-4 month old Black Lab- No dog or sign of dog anywhere and I wasnt going into the alders alone at 1:00AM. More calling the dog as I glanced down and there he was - right between my legs. He was no fool.

Thanks for the story, this was a good one and I’m glad they both survived. Glenn had character and grit. I feel much safer and prefer a firearm over bear spray. It’s very unlikely that I’d carry both. I’d also go with a 10mm XDM 17+1 hard-cast ammo.

OC spray will not stop an enraged attacking human. So forget it with angry bears. Like OC spray with humans, bear spray is likely a better choice if the bear is not attacking. In "neutral mode" the spray will be felt in the eyes & sinuses much better. Based on multiple forums the guides in AK and Pac NW are switching to 10mm auto. With lots of thought and reflection on personal experience that seemed the best combo of power and handgun type. Haven't decided which Underwood or Buffalo Bore load will be reserved for the serious times.

I don't know man, but guess a 44 mag would likely be a better choice over 10 mm in a situation described in the video. This guy used 454 and placed 5(or 6) hits on the bear before it was incapable of attacking any more.

I had the unfortunate experience of falling asleep driving in a remote area of Nevada. I had to have emergency surgery done on my face in a Roadside hospital in Fallon Nevada where you called a doctor to come in as they had none on staff and they came in and patched you the best they could so you could survive long enough to make it to a real hospital. I had bit the end of my Tonge off, they sowed my Tonge back on reattached my lower lip as well all with no anesthesia. They told me the shots I would have to get to numb my Tonge would hurt as much as sowing it back on so they went with no pain shots. They couldn't put me to sleep because they thought I would choke on my own blood. After this attempted repair I had to go 100 miles by ambulance to Reno to get to a proper hospital before any pain meds were administered. That happened 50 years ago, and I still remember it like yesterday. All these comments about not believing him that they did the surgery without anesthesia.......well I believe him.

A magnum pistol using hot reloads & large grain bullets is what makes me feel safe. I take a magnum pistol over bear spray because if the bear is hungry I know of people who died using bear spray only. I may use a automatic rifle but a cylinder pistol over and auto pistol due to potential of jamming. I know in some cases jam cost a life or mortal injury. Even if I carry a high power rifle,I always carry the magnum pistol.
A pistol on the hip is quicker to get to if the bear surprises you up close. It is always best to go in twos when traveling in the backwoods. If you pack any food make sure it is in a air tight seal. You don’t want to advertise your presence a long distance away for the bear to be drawn to you.

Bravo, good job to Brett Bohn for saving his father's life!
It sounds like they were too close to the Bear Den.
Yes indeed, they were properly armed.
This cases shows us that once again we see that hot loaded Flat nose bullets of a substantial caliber ;(454 Casull) coupled with knowledge, know how, motivation and boldness of when and where to aim for are critical mittagating factors to stopping dangerous apex predatorial animal attacks .
As a known specialty bullet series inventor made just for Hunting Wild Boars and Bears ,I have disagreement with the quoted stats. I've done research into this subject for almost 50 years, based upon my research and experiences that capable firearms are proven overall to be more effective effective than bear spray.
I also have a multi layered approach, of including multiple Firearms, Knifes,Hatchets and Bear Spray in my own wilderness carry personal safety defense devises/ equipment.

How would they know that den did not contain a sow & her cubs? Not supposed to hunt a mother bear.

Agreed. It was a bear's den opening, occupant type unknown. I think this type of bear hunt should not be allowed.

Jeremy Evans for sure as he had to walk, hike, roll, fall, drive a great distance to save himself. But this ol guy is equally tough in his own right. No anesthetic, likely due to adrenalin and shock, stubbornness as well. He was able to keep his wits but I vote Jeremy for his travel distance and the fact he actually had to fight the bear off with his own hands multiple times. Any way you slice it, they are both tough sob's

I live and hunt in north east Florida. We do have some black bear but I’ve always considered my 30-06 to be enough gun for these smaller bears. I have seen one while hunting but fortunately we did cross paths.

Scary Bear Attacks has been a very popular website which I have followed from the first episode. Moreover, Addicus lives in Idaho bear country and I live in the Flathead Valley of NW Montana, only a few hundred miles away, in a very similar environment, so there is an additional connection. However, segregated comment sections based on who pays membership fees and educational materials “reserved for patrons only” is divisive elitism and a severe aggravation. Addicus, I am asking you directly to reconsider the direction that you are taking this channel. Thank you.

Hey HenryRodgers1752, thank you for your input and I appreciate you hanging in there with me this entire time. The Patreon account is to keep images that are not great off the channel as it is a little too graphic for general consumption. My kids love watching YT and I would hate the thought of them seeing those kind of images. But, they also show the power a bear has and how dangerous they can be. YT does try to put new features on every once in a while and I think the members thing is their latest. I don't understand it all yet, but I try their features out to see what they do. Not intended to create an elite thing, etc. Adventure bravely, my friend!

Why do I feel bad for the BEAR?

    • @scarybearattacks
      @scarybearattacks  4 месяца назад

I do too! They are only doing what they do to survive. Their entire existence is violence. They fight to breed and feed. It is common sense that a violent reaction from a bear is expected IMHO.

  • @crimeariver6034
    @crimeariver6034 5 месяцев назад

You should describe what they are doing in it's entirety. No judgement, but an accurate description of what they were doing. They wait for the bear to emerge from a den and then they shoot it. Not hunting, killing .

Why is this classified as as a bear “attack” when these guys traveled 30 miles to murder a sleeping, groggy bear in its own habitat far away from human civilization? Poor bear fought for its life.
