Within hours of Ruby Franke and her apparent business partner Jodi Hildebrandt being arrested on multiple charges of aggravated child abuse in Utah, Kevin Franke was at the Ivins Police Department trying to figure out what was going on with their children. Law&Crime’s Jesse Weber analyzes the top new details we learned about Kevin Franke, and how his story changed, during two interviews with police.

When Kevin was told that Ruby had been arrested for abusing their children and that his children were in the hospital because they were emaciated, covered in wounds, and severely dehydrated he asked about his wife, instead of his kids. That's all I need to know about the quality of Kevin's parenting.

No, I disagree. I think he was fighting denial at the same time. I think his failure to comprehend the scope of these claims speaks to his innocence. Think about it, that's the LAST thing a man in his position would want to accept as reality. Not to mention, it's not that easy to just accept the police are being honest and on the right side of justice these days. I mean we've ALL heard horror stories concerning crooked cops. He's in a very vulnerable position, and I think he handled the situation quite well.

He also mentioned wishing he had been a better husband!? But he wasn't thinking maybe he could have been or should have been a better father? This guy should NEVER regain custody of the 2 youngest. Any visitation should be highly supervised.

As if he didn’t know. That was a house of horrors and had been investigated for abuse for YEARS. One of the saddest part of this story is that if the child hadn’t gotten the courage to go and tell, it would still be going on right this minute.

There is NO way this father didn't know of his wife's abuse. He's not even asking about his own children who have been TORTURED! This is heinous, and the phone calls between him and Ruby tell a lot more about their beliefs that come before their own kids.
Here we go again, lots of people wanting to cast blame without knowing the full story. HE had 4 phone calls with Ruby on 13 months, because he was honoring what Jodi said he should do to get his wife and family back.
I'm guessing he was abused & manipulated by Ruby as well. To go that long without contact with his kids, demonstrates the power Ruby held.
Maybe you should wait to get old enough to get into a relationship before you make that kind of accusation!

In their videos it was clear these "parents" were f'd up in the head due to their "beliefs" and what they considered to be "discipline" towards their kids...
That's why nobody who saw their videos believes this guy had no idea, because he obviously did. He knew what his wife was capable of and he never did anything about it because he believed it was all fine and dandy.
And besides... the fact this "father" not only tried to sue his own daughter (because she went into the family home to gather further evidence) but never once showed any shock or deep concern for his youngest children (he didn't ask about their condition nor did he show any desperation to go be with them)... isn't that telling enough about the type of person he is?

If you make your oldest son sleep outside on a bean bag for 6 months for punishment, then you are as guilty as Ruby. It was bad before Jodi came into the picture.
When Kevin said "I don't know the details" after they revealed the extent of the abuse to his children. And then asked FIRST and FORMOST about the wife. He is AWFUL.
He may also be aware that police are allowed to lie in US. He has so removed himself from the situation through totally believing in his wife, he could see no wrong, or to that extent. Not saying he should not be punished but I’m interested in what he has to say, let it be a lesson to all of us. Never trust 100% in a person no matter how much you love them. He will suffer whether jailed or not.

I disagree. He was not living there and participating. Yes, they had some weird types of behavior when together but he was not there at this time.
Kevin is NOT guilty of 2nd degree felony child abuse. Kevin is guilty of being a weak minded man. Kevin is guilty of being lazy and allowing Ruby to determine the dynamic of their family. Kevin, like most Mormon men, is guilty of being in charge of earning money while his wife did everything else. Kevin is guilty of getting involved in a cult and he is guilty of being brainwashed. Kevin is guilty for not following up with his children. Kevin is guilty of him and Ruby using questionable discipline in their videos. These disciplinary methods were weird and definitely not acceptable but clearly were not illegal as they were not arrested for them. But Kevin did not starve, beat or use unusually cruel mind control methods to abuse his children…hence why he has not been charged. As much as Kevin is pathetic, he did not participate in the abuse during May 2023 to August 2023.

The more I hear from this poor excuse for a father, the more I think that he was well aware of the suffering of his children. The fact that his eldest son has absolutely no contact with his parents, speaks volumes. These children should never be handed back to him or his family.

I just saw the unblurred pictures of RF's body and ankles... it's inhumane to do that to a child😢. Both Kevin and Ruby will always blame Jodi for this because they know how badly they failed as a parent. Notice that Ruby didn’t have to familiarize Kevin with her beliefs that the children were evil. He knew exactly what she was talking about. He didn’t know the specific wounds, perhaps, but he clearly understood what she was saying. Neither of them deserve to have their children!

He’s clearly not able to utilize wisdom to check in on his children for the sake of the fact that they’re his children. He is incapable of protecting them. The investigators need to talk to the oldest, she will tell them how willing and or incompetent her father actually is.
My mother was abused by her mother and her father didn’t protect her. It took years because she idolized her father, for her to recognize that he was complicit in her abuse because he allowed it to happen. I thought my father was guilty of the same thing but when I finally talked to him, he told me the truth-that he tried to get custody of me but was denied.
He didn't even ask about his kids i hope he doesn't get custody of those kids.

During an interview, RF claimed that her kids have made some “egregious” choices that led her and Kevin to make this decision. “The two youngest are showing long patterns of selfishness. They have shown, through their choices, an unwillingness to repent, their unwillingness to feel sorrow for some pretty egregious choices that they’ve made.”
Included in this “gift of truth” that she and Kevin would be giving them this Christmas, she pulled up a graphic and claimed that they would be giving them the gifts of boundaries and repentance.

My question is how many Fathers would leave the house for a year and NOT ONCE demand or try to see the kids despite what a therapist says. He didnt even call to talk to them. That’s not a loving Father.
His first question after hearing the deplorable, evil, horrendous, monstrous state of his poor, innocent, angel youngest children… is, “WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN TO MY WIFE??”, “I TRUST MY WIFE”. Not dropping to his knees begging to be told this can’t be happening to these children he loves so much!! He is a liar that he didn’t know what was going on with his kids!! HE IS JUST AS CULPABLE!!! That’s a little unfair. Chris Watts killed his pregnant wife and two kids. Is there any evidence that Kevin knew about how his wife was treating the kids. When the police man told Kevin about his son, his reaction says more "oh no, they found out" instead of "is my son okay???" He knows
He finds out about the horrific conditions his children were found in & shows no remorse or grief! No emotions for his children, just blocks his face, & asks about "his wife"! He should never have any contact with the minor children he happily abandoned to severe abuse!
It's insane to me he doesn't even ask further about the condition of his kids, just wants to know what's going to happen to his wife he just found out abused his children!! Clearly he doesn't care much about his children.

This reminds me of the scene in Handmaid's Tale where June finds her child and tells her that she tried so hard to get her back. Her daughter said, "Why didn't you try harder?" I wonder if any of the children had this kind of conversation with their father.

I want Netflix to make a documentary because they go into depth, and we’d be able to see exactly how Kevin was complicit in torturing these children. I don’t think it was just neglect

Why was he not outraged when he found out his kids are hospitalized and were severely abused . I believed him up until they told him his child is in the hospital and had been tortured and abused and he barely flinched . Grief is a crazy thing. I just don’t know .
Even if this man wasn't aware of the abuse his kids were suffering from, what a lame excuse for a man to not ask about his kids....letting his wife not even mention them in their telephone conversations. There is something deeply wrong with him too.

One of the weakest men to have walked on Earth! He didn't ask about the kids because he well knew that the wife was abusive and they took it up a notch with the help of Jodi. That's the reason he allowed her to move to Jodi's house, so they could abuse the kids with no witnesses.
His reaction makes no sense. When the policeman delivers his punchline and closes the trap he has walked this man into he does not ask what happened, how the children ended up malnourished and emaciated. That should have been his very first question and it should have been asked in shocked astonishment. That visceral shock is completely missing. His reaction is so muted he eventually appears to realise this himself and goes on to narrate his feelings rather than expressing them naturally.
At the very least shouldn’t he be charged with parental neglect??
And all this supernatural creepiness was going on in his home and he agrees to leave the kids there alone with Ruby and Jodi?? And that’s not irresponsible???

Apparently, Jodi strongly urged the couples she “counselled” to separate, generally trying to make the husband the source of all the problems. Many couples who received her counselling were strong enough to refuse seeing her. They were the lucky ones.
Why does he want his kids now? He didn't want his kids the day before or even the whole year before this happened.

I think he wants them because his wife told him in a phone call to go get them. He seems to do everything she wants him to do.

Kevin was involved in the beginning and knew Ruby's parenting style was abusive. I don't believe he's innocent and I hope the youngest children find new homes away from him, Ruby and any of the family who defend her.

What a poor father. This guy is not innocent. The only thing that saved him was the fact that he lived separately from his wife, and said he knew nothing about his kids. No visitation? What a shame he didn’t spend time with the victims. He would have seen their conditions, and knew they were not being cared for properly.

He’s no father to those children his wife and him took away a child’s bed and withheld food from their children for not getting all their chores done before breakfast like kids needs breakfast to start their day and a bed to sleep in at night
I agree you don't discipline a child by starving them, dehydrating them, not allowing them proper clothing and a bed to sleep in at night. That these are the go to things they used make me feel they were very awful parents with no actual skills beyond how to exploit and abuse a child.
The way he doesn’t agree with the detective when the detective says “no person should be treated like that” is suspicious to me. Even if he didn’t know about THIS incident I think he definitely justifies starving & possibly beating/detaining his kids.
