I just signed up for Newsela after viewing your video. The digital report suggestions are AWESOME!!!! I plan to add methods for students to enter pictures and sentences/paragraphs. Thank you!
Thank you for your video! I am a former classroom teacher turned sales, and I am hoping to land my dream job with Newsela. Was an amazing resource in the classroom. The different levels allow for differentiation within the classroom to reach all students.
Love this! A powerful resource now available to teachers for free. Really like the 'just right read level' component. You did a masterful job of showing the use from a teacher and student usage perspective. Thank you for being on top of the current challenge with schools being closed and offering such helpful information.
Thank you for this instruction. I am just in the midst of taking classes for a special education degree and needed some more information. This video was well set out. I work currently as a para and have seen teachers use "Newsela" , but didn't have the complete idea of how to make it work. Thank you.
I really liked how thoroughly you covered newsela. I am an ESL teacher and I made a similar video on newsela but since I covered it along with other resources, I didn't get to cover everything on newsela. Great work! What grade do you teach?
New EdTech Classroom How does newsela determine each student’s lexile level? I’m using it for the first time this year. Do we need to issue them all one assignment and it will do it automatically afterward? What if they’ve used it with a previous teacher? Will it already have record of that? I’m just curious how the program determines that. Thanks!
I am checking a lot of your tutorials, I would like to ask three questions, I hope you can help. 1- Can I as their teacher assing the reading skills check, or they do it on their own? 2- Can I assign reading texts individually? I ask you this, because I am creating a reading club, and I would like to assing individual readings according to topics they enjoy, which leads to the 3rd question; Would you give me a piece of advice for the reading club using newsela? Thansk so much in advance.
Hi, so sorry for the long delay in responding! 1. You can assign them the reading skills check or they can navigate there on their own. 2. In order to assign a text individually, you'd have to just send them the link v. actually using the assign function b/c then it would be sent out to your entire Google Classroom list 3. As far as a reading club goes, I would organize text sets based on topics of interest and then provide students with the links to the text sets that they are interested in (you don't need to specifically assign an article to access all the functionality). Hope that helps!
Hi Sam- Thanks for another helpful video! I just started a class pf 5th graders in Independent Study. I will now be using Newsela and am hoping that you might consider sharing the Non-Fiction Report Google doc that you showed. If not, I completely understand. When I make it myself, is it important for the template parts (like to vocab box) to be immovable? If so , how do I freeze the components of the page? Thaks, agin, for your most excellent channel! -Ian
Newsela is awesome and couldn't have been more timely introduced to me! I would like to know the best way to grade assigned articles and the best way to transfer the scores back to Google Classrooom. Thank you!
Hi Andy, I don't believe there is any way to transfer grades automatically from Newsela back to Google Classroom, so you'd have to pull up each screen separately and enter the grades manually. Newsela will pull in student rosters as well as push assignments onto Google Classroom, but that's about it. Best of luck!
Yes, the links are actually in the video description! You just need to click "File" and "Make a Copy" in order to edit and use the document as you'd like!
Hi Teresa, I use Screenflow, which is only available for Macs. It's pretty intuitive and there are lots of great tutorials online for how to use it. Adobe Premiere Pro would also be a good option for more advanced video editing. If you end up deciding to go with Screenflow, I can recommend specific YT channels you could check out for tutorials. I might need to start making some myself as well!
In using your template, there are parts of the template that when clicked on, it moves you to a grid to type your responses and then when done, it moves you back to the template. Is there a workaround or is this the standard?
Hi! I think you are referring to the embedded Drawing on the Google Doc. Yeah, it's a little funky, but it's also the best way I know of to get a bunch of irregular shapes on a page. It should still work, though, my students have been using that template to make reports for a few years.
Hi Jean, thanks for your recommendation! I reached out to Canvas telling them my audience wanted me to make content about their platform and requesting access to a premium account in order to do so: they never responded!
Hi Araceli, I'm not aware of any way to automatically import Newsela grades to Google Classroom. I've always just pulled up a split screen and manually entered grades.
Thank you for the information. Two things. First, do students need to make a specific account if they are in Google classroom, or are the two linked? Secondly, can I personally change the reading levels for individual students, or am I only able to set it for the class? I understand the program will change it for them, just wondered if I had that ability tas well.
So sorry for the long delay in responding here! You can sync your Google Classroom with Newsela, so they won't need to create separate accounts. Unless something has recently changed, I'm not aware of any way to individually & manually adjust reading levels for students.
Hey Sam, do you have a place where you share, or allow purchase, of the reports you created to go along with your Newsela articles? I really like, what I could see, the reading skills report you modeled in the video.

You videos are extremely helpful. Thank you for creating them. How do I get an Newsela assignment to post in my google classroom? I created the assignment, but it didn't post.
Hi Janet, I'd first double-check that Newsela is pushing the assignment to the correct GC (you should be able to see that when you create the assignment). If it still isn't working, I would just get the shareable link to the Newsela assignment and post that in GC as an end-around.

If you select the reading skill, you should see a blue "Assign" button on the top right hand side of your screen. Then you can choose which class to assign it to. Students won't see it until you've assigned it to them.

I had the same problem and found a FAQ with the same question and a video explanation in Newsela. To sync with google, you need to close your browser window and log in to your new account again with Google. Then you will see the button when you go to the Classes tab and can sync your students' to your Google Classroom.
Thank you! However, when I log out and try to sign in using google I don't have a teacher account but some other account somehow? Weird. I contacted Newsela support. For something that is supposed to be easy, I am having so much trouble.
@@kellyhodgins_staff-athensh9420 You should be able to sync - but I don't think anything is easy until I fully understand it! Hang in there. I'm not sure if your issue is the same as mine. Check your profile on Newsela. When I log in to Newsela through Google I land on my Settings page and I can see that I am clearly identified as a teacher. Check your account.
